Once burned ATF agent Jake Wescott goes undercover in his Maine hometown of Dragon Harbor to find the local connection to Mexican drug-and-arms cartel El Águila’s New England operation. Who would suspect a local son living on a boat and fixing up his grandmother’s house? On his own time, he can’t resist digging into the old fire that killed his girlfriend. What he finds makes him suspect the cause wasn’t accidental but arson.
Twice shy Lani Cameron's return to Maine throws her into a tinderbox of danger. She has no memory of the fire that killed her twin sister and scarred her, inside and out. When she learns Jake is investigating the cause of the fire, she wants in. She couldn't save her twin but maybe she can dispel the guilt and nightmares by finding the truth. Seeing Jake again revives attraction she kept hidden, but who does he see when he touches her, Lani or her twin?
And into the fire Because of his girlfriend's death and that of a colleague, Jake doesn't trust himself to protect anyone, especially Lani, as daring and determined as she is sexy. He fears she'll become a target, but he needs her lost memories of that night. When the arsonist tries to kill her, Jake becomes her reluctant protector. Their shared past and the search bind them together, and intimacy ignites passion. As they uncover secrets, they face danger more explosive than they’d feared.
I wanted to write as soon as I learned to read. I dabbled with stories and poems for years, but didn't start writing seriously until many years later. My favorite books have always been mysteries and romances, so the mix in romantic suspense was a natural. I love writing romantic suspense because it throws the hero and heroine together under extraordinary circumstances and pits them against a clever villain. My books have been both a Romantic Times Magazine Reviewer’s Choice Nominee and a finalist for the Daphne du Maurier Award. Reviewers have called my books fast-paced, thrilling, action-packed, sizzling, and highly emotional. I have also published two children's picture storybooks, Sleigh Magic and Stowaways: a Maine Pirate Tale. I am a West Virginia native but I have lived for many years on the coast of Maine. The second book in the Eagle Task Force series, Susan Vaughan's, Once Burned, is a mystery/crime-thriller that will keep you guessing until the end. Lani and Jake are loners who join forces to face down the heartbreak from their shared past. Delving into the secrets of a tragic fire that left them both scarred, they stir up more trouble than they bargained for. Set in coastal Maine, Vaughan vividly depicts the daily rhythms and charms of small-town life, making for an enjoyable, suspenseful read.
This is a masterpiece of fast-paced romantic suspense that had my heart pumping and adrenaline rising from beginning to end. I loved sexy and tortured ATF Agent Jake Wescott and his interactions with the other characters especially beautiful and defensive Lani Cameron. Their sizzling chemistry and toe-curling intimacy left me breathless and wanting to read more from Susan Vaughan. I voluntarily reviewed this book and have not been compensated in any way.
