Seize the throne. Seek the legend and conquer the Abyss.
Nations rise and fall in the aftermath of war over the Eternity Gate. The corrupted desert throne stands empty, and the Immortal Abyss awakens. Drought ravages the continent, and people long for the rebirth of a starpalm, who will rise from among mortals and end their judgment.
Orphaned at birth, Tol grew up hiding in the farthest corners of the desert, training under powerful rebel fire wielders. She now dedicates her life to the Rebellion’s cause to seize the throne and Abyss from the surviving dynasty and deliver both to the coming deity.
Chosen as the Rebellion’s messenger, she travels to reach sympathizers capable of identifying the starpalm. Familiar figures haunt her dreams, and her path twists with every step she takes. Can Tol fulfill her purpose and summon a legend? Or will her country perish under the judgment of the twin gates?
Katherine Briggs crafted her first monster story at age three. Since graduating from crayons to laptop, she continues to devour and weave fantasy tales while enjoying chai tea. She, her coadventurer husband, and rescue dog reside outside Houston, where she classically educates amazing students, teaches ESL, and enjoys studying other languages.
I didn’t know what to expect when I cracked open this book. In fact, after experiencing many more unexpected plot twists and turns like I did with the first book—The Eternity Gate—I’ll remember next time I pick up a Briggs book that she writes unpredictable stories that keep you guessing and flipping pages!
The Immortal Abyss may follow a new cast of characters set in another land we only heard about in The Eternity Gate, but I assure you that this story is well worth journeying alongside these vivid characters and follow their triumphs and challenges.
We do get to see some old friends in here as well which made me happy and I already miss everyone from both books. If there is any hope of more books set in this world, I’ll even take a short story, trust me I’m there! 📖❤️
The allegory is beautifully well done. I teared up a time or two with certain passages. I won’t spoil anything but will just say that The Immortal Abyss reminded me why I love Christian fiction in fantasy so much.
If you loved the fantasy classics * Narnia * Lord of The Rings
You will enjoy this modern Christian fantasy series!
Thank you Katherine for sending me a physical arc of The Immortal Abyss. This duology is one of my favorites and I really hope someday we can get another story because I can’t stop thinking about these characters and the storyworld! I want to see all my new literary friends and explore new places! A girl can dream, right? All of these thoughts expressed here are my own!
It surprised me in the first few chapters by introducing us to a new protagonist and a completely new side of this world we hadn't explored yet (if you're a fan of #desertfantasy, you'll like where this story goes!). And then it surprised me again with a certain plot twist that doubles down on some of my favorite parts of Eternity's Gate--but exploring them in even more depth.
There's a lot going on in The Immortal Abyss and Briggs does a great job of keeping readers guessing about where characters' true loyalties lie. Add in a fantastic magic system (tied to the four cardinal virtues!) and several well-timed plot twists, and there's a lot for readers to love in this sequel.
I was so intrigued by the climax of The Eternity Gate that I had to immediately pick up The Immortal Abyss, the second half of the Threshold duology. Briggs crafted something unique among what I’ve experienced in the Christian fantasy genre. In terms of setting, world building, and plot, I’ve read nothing else quite like it. I’ve read quite a few unique, well-crafted, Christian stories lately. Across the board, be it in historical fiction, suspense, fantasy, science fiction, or any other subgenre into which I’ve dipped my toes, I find myself so excited for where Christian fiction seems to be heading. And I’m incredibly enthusiastic about its present. Briggs’ work in her Threshold duology is a welcome contributor to both.
The Immortal Abyss picks up pretty immediately after the end of The Eternity Gate. However, this half of the story takes place within the kingdom that is the bitterest enemy of Laijon, the light kingdom of book one. Here, we find ourselves in Vedoa, the fire empire. Whereas Laijon feels very Asian in inspiration, Vedoa feels very Arabian. Briggs did a marvelous job fleshing out this people, their kingdom and their land. The world building was beautifully descriptive, by turns lush and desolate; I felt transported. Here there be dragons, and I really enjoyed the variety of them. They added an extra layer to that lovely aforementioned world building. I also really appreciated how much more Briggs dug into the magic system—or giftings—of Vedoa in comparison to book one’s focus on Laijon, which didn’t delve into the giftings as deeply.
Because even the name of our protagonist is a spoiler for book one, I can’t say much about the characters or the plot. I will say that we were introduced to some fascinating new characters—and reunited with favorites from the previous book. As far as our protagonist goes, she’s the focus of a “chosen one” trope. She has a slight case of “not like other girls” syndrome early on in the book. There was a touch of willful ignorance to her character, which bugged me. Thankfully, she grew past both issues. There’s also just a touch of a love triangle, a trope I generally despise. But it was handled really well here. It was subtle, far from the focus, and made a lot of sense with the plot.
Around the 60% mark, there was a twist that I didn’t see coming. It was here that I could see why Briggs thanked C.S. Lewis in her acknowledgement. It was also here that the story really picked up for me, moving from interesting to propulsive. As with The Eternity Gate, there’s a powerful climax to The Immortal Abyss. I found this climax even more engaging. It delivered a beautiful, fantastical presentation of the Gospel that I found powerful and well-balanced, as well as an organic crescendo to the plot Briggs wove over the course of both books.
I thoroughly enjoyed this duology. I would even put this second book a bit above the first. My only real complaints are the pacing early on in both stories, as well as the typical YA issues of the main characters when we first meet them. But the pacing improves dramatically, and these foibles give the protagonists something to grow through, so I find both issues pretty easily forgivable. I’m so glad I was drawn in by these beautiful covers, and am even more glad that they housed unique, beautiful, moving, powerful stories that point to Christ in interesting, blatant ways.
Reading The Immortal Abyss feels like sitting around a crackling, popping campfire in a fantasy world, listening to a skilled storyweaver recount a tale of brokenness and healing and testing by flames. It’s beautifully written and deeply heartfelt, and I savored all of it.
Wow! The Immortal Abyss met and exceeded all expectations I had going into this second installment of the Threshold Duology. This book transports you into a world full of fiery deserts, kingdoms at war, dragons, and tested friendships.
I loved the main character, Tol, and the great loyalty she displays throughout the book. I’ll leave the names of side characters out to avoid spoilers, but I absolutely fell in love with two of them specifically! There are some really unexpected twists throughout the book, but it’s the ending that really brings it all together and legitimately had me teary eyed.
The ending serves as a reminder that surrendering everything to Jesus is not always easy, but it is always good. That in true surrender we are not left empty handed but instead receive wholeness and blessing. Tol reminds me that we don’t have to have it all together to be called worthy and loved. I’ve never read a modern fantasy novel that displays gospel truth so beautifully and organically 🥹.
If you love settings like Dune and Avatar, I highly recommend diving into the world of the Immortal Abyss!
I enjoyed reading the first part of this thoroughly entertaining story in “The Eternity Gate" but "The Immortal Abyss" really brought the story home in a fast paced, fun book. The character development, world building and plot twists will keep you wanting to read more of this exciting book. It was also interesting to see how the lead character, Tol, responds to her gifts and challenges.
Another incredible Christian fantasy epic! It's hard to say which book in this duology I liked more. The worldbuilding, magic system, and gospel themes were beautifully complex and fascinating. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who loves character driven epics. The only thing I didn't love (which is personal preference) is the unpredictable love triangle. But it's a minor issue since the romance was extremely subtle throughout.
Stunning. Hopeful. Filled with light. I’m going to have to come back and write a more comprehensive review once my thoughts are more in order, but I loved this story.
I love it when book 2 is just as well done as the first book. The action does not stop. The pacing and characters (a new cast of characters!) are so well done and the fire wielding magic is so cool.
I had highlights on so many pages. Not only to remind myself of the different levels of well developed magic abilities, but to remember the well done phrases and characters.
I loved Tol. I love and appreciate brave, strong email FMCs. She is a fire wielder and has a quest to deliver a message for the Rebellion but she is in for a wild ride full of secrets, fire, drought, hidden identities and so much more.
The author did an amazing job with planting important details throughout the book. And the twists and turns did not stop. I can’t wait to see what Briggs will do next.
"Because in my darkest moments, someone gave me another chance, if I was willing to take it."
This book holds a special place in my heart. I connected with Tol's fiery, sarcastic spirit instantly. From page 1, there was an urgency to Tol's mission. This urgency, along with Katherine's superb writing voice made this a joy to read. Tol made me laugh out loud, gasp constantly, and close my eyes frequently. A heroine you can't help but root for, even when her stubbornness creates challenging circumstances.
Carried over from book 1, The Immortal Abyss continues to explore the idea of what constitutes a lost cause. The hybrid shadow creatures play a more prominent part here. I can't say too much without spoilers, but I can say that the examination of humanity and monsters packs an emotional punch. Often, a horrible decision doesn't have an isolated effect, and Katherine doesn't shy away from the consequences of misguided actions motivated by fear and lust for power. There are so many heavy themes, but they are handled with sensitivity and truth in equal measure.
Last, this story made me cry. Tears of profound gratitude - gratitude for not needing to be enough. Through the salvation secured by Christ's death on the cross, I never have to worry about being enough, because when God - the Creator of the universe - looks at me, He sees Jesus. The embodiment of perfection. Tol comes to realize her inability to save anyone - including herself. Thankfully, there is One greater who is aways enough. The parallels between Christ taking on our sin and what happens to Tol is spectacular. It's my favourite part of the book, and it was a reminder I didn't know I needed.
Thank you to Katherine and Enclave Publishing for sending me an e-arc of The Immortal Abyss. This story is one I'll treasure for a very long time. All the above opinions are my own, and I loved my time with this duology.
From ancient ruins and scaled monsters to an epic magic system and a contested throne, the Immortal Abyss takes the reader on a twisting tale I truly wasn’t expecting but absolutely loved. The Four Forms and the Reborn Star were such fascinating concepts and I ate up every scene where Tol and her companions wielded fire. This is one of those stories where images will stick in your mind long after closing the book.
Tol’s journey to reconciling her faith and her kingdom is both tragic and satisfying. A story with virtue and something meaningful to say, this is a book I’m adding to my daughter’s shelf to read one day.
If I could change one thing, I’d make this series a trilogy so I could cross more thresholds with these amazing characters! I’ll be reading whatever comes next from this author.
This book went by way too fast! I can’t believe it’s over already . . . That said, the pacing of the story was not at all rushed—I just devoured it because the characters are so amazing, the plot is a roller coaster, and the writing is thoroughly engrossing. I wasn’t sure what to expect after the dropping bomb at the end of the first book in this duology, and while here we follow the adventure of new characters in a different location, it’s the same world we fall in love with in book one. We get to explore more peoples and cultures as the quest of the Eternity Gate escalates on a new front. Tol is a riot of a character that I fell in love with from chapter one, and the gobsmacking plot twists kept me on my toes to the last page. Her journey is one of identity, faith, and sacrifice as everything she thought she knew turns on its head. Also, I was pleasantly shocked when characters from the first book appeared, tying the two stories together in a fascinating and exciting way that I’ve not seen before! This is a grand tale with deep themes of purpose and worthiness, it’s also a smashing conclusion to a gripping duology that promises so much more beyond the last page.
When the Eternity Gate finished I couldn't wait to get my hands on this second installment in the duology. It lived up to every imagining I had. The book pulled me in on the first page and I didn't want to leave even when the last page was done. With twists, turns, danger, doubt, and death around every corner I couldn't take a deep breath until all was revealed. With one gate opened and satisfied, the Immortal Gate now demands it's own end. A country and it's people are torn apart trying to find a leader who will set things right with both the gate and their neighbors. Katherine Briggs has created a new world full of magic, dragons, and fantasy that comes alive around the reader like a movie. Stunning detail surges off the page at the reader to engage all the senses. And the characters! Tol became a dear friend that you want to hug, cheer, and scold depending on the new danger surrounding her and her friends. Each person helps give more realism to the story, sharing with the reader the sacrifice, faith, and devotion needed to help save a nation and an individual. I did not want to put this book down until I had all the answers I craved. Even with the finish of the book, this world will stay with me for a long time. Katherine Briggs has pulled me in, entertained on all levels, and left wondering just how everything worked out.. I have loved every minute of this book and excitedly await her next novel. It is sure to be another heart pounding, engrossing trip to another new world. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to escape and experience a fantastic new place. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The Immortal Abyss by Katherine Briggs was so so good. I was captivated by the story from the beginning until the end, it gives a little slower start to build things up a bit, but before you know it, the story takes off and does not land until the end. This book speaks of the One, which can readily be identified as God. This book gives readers glimpses of redemption, faith and trust. There are other themes, but these are some of the more prominent ones. Tol is the main character here in this fantasy story. She is one that has fire in her palm. She is very powerful, but she does not realize her power. She trains to hone it, but it does not seem to be coming along as she thinks it should. One day she is called upon to deliver a message that will change the world as she knows it. This brings to mind the gospel message that we, as Christians are called to go share, is the message that changed the immediate world in the past centuries ago and continues to do so until Jesus returns. She relies on her own abilities to get by, but soon realizes that she cannot do it alone. She must look to something or someone who is greater than her to help her accomplish her mission of delivering the message and more. This story is such a reminder that we cannot do anything on our own. It is only in Jesus’ strength that we must rely on and that allows us to do as He commands. When we look to Him, He will always guide us as we share His message and live for Him. Just as Tol finds redemption and understanding when she seeks the One. This book is definitely a must-buy and read. Get your copy as soon as possible and enjoy! I received a complimentary copy from the author through Celebrate Lit, for my honest opinion.
✨ARC book review✨ 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘈𝘣𝘺𝘴𝘴 by Katherine Briggs is the second half of The Threshold Duology, which begins with 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘎𝘢𝘵𝘦.
I had no idea what to expect with this half of the story, but I couldn't have imagined such an epic continuation! Everything that is established in the first book is taken to a new level in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘈𝘣𝘺𝘴𝘴, as we follow the physical and spiritual journey of a young woman named Tol.
Tol is spirited, interesting, and very relatable. It's easy to care about her and slip into her shoes, even as we see her fighting both inward and outward battles with incredibly high stakes.
A widespread drought lends urgency to those stakes, as Tol finds herself as both a figurehead and a front-lines warrior in a war of disrupted nations and an oppressed rebellion.
This book depicts not only a battle for survival, but a battle for the soul. The magic system is epic, unique, and exciting, but the real power comes from the Father of Light, who makes "a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert" (Isaiah 43:19). Themes of humanity, power, and redemption are explored without shying from the parts that are hard to look at, and this truly enhances the impact.
I finished this duology feeling a deep sense of gratitude for the beauty and strength of storytelling, and for the truth that winds its way through this particular story, never faltering, and pointing always to our Father.
Thank you to @enclavepublishing and @katherinebriggs_author for the opportunity to read an e-ARC! All opinions are entirely my own. :)
I am a big fan of Briggs and knew from the first novel in this series, The Eternity Gate, that I would love this book…and I did!
The characters, setting, fantasy building—all of it was so good! I’m not going to lie, at the beginning of this book I was slightly confused because it wasn’t in Seyo’s point of view like it was in the first book but I quickly got used to the new protagonist, Tol.
I really like her, she’s young but strong willed and brave. She doesn’t understand a lot of her past and it was interesting being shown who her parents were as well as who she is and where she comes from. She is a fighter and was really relatable and fun to read, an inspiring heroine!
The turns this books takes you on is interesting and unique, and the world building was just as good as in the first book!
I also loved seeing a certain someone but I’m unsure if it’s spoilers or not so I will leave it at that…especially because it hints at a bit more than friendship (at least to me and my rose colored glasses).
This was a last book in this duology series so I'm sad to let the story and characters go but I'm excited for what's to come!
Overall this was such a wonderful fantasy and I had so much fun reading it! If you enjoy Fantasy, duologies, inspiring heroines, interesting plot lines, and great fantasy building then I highly recommend this story!
*Thank you so much to the amazing author, Katherine Briggs, for sending me a copy to read! And although I was sent this book, all thoughts are my own!
With vivid world-building, Ms. Briggs drops her readers into a desert fantasy, populated with warring dynasties and mythical creatures. This is a wonderful blend of fantasy and allegory. With some of the humans wielding fire with the power of such virtues as Justice, Wisdom and Temperance.
The main character is flawed and strives to prove herself worthy, making her relatable to readers. She seeks to control her powers and discover if she is the one to fulfill an ancient prophecy. With friendships and loyalties questioned, she seeks to overcome betrayal in a battle between good versus evil.
With skillful plot pacing, readers find themselves sitting on the edge of their seat as they eagerly flip the pages for a fantastic ending. They will find compelling themes that are applicable in real life.
Full disclosure- I have not read the first book in this duology. While the author provided enough of the backstory for me to thoroughly enjoy the story, I recommend reading the books in order.
***I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher through CelebrateLit and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
What I think you should know: Immortal Abyss is a Young Adult Fantasy by Katherine Briggs. It is the second book in the Threshold Duology series. I highly recommend that you read the first book in the series prior to this book, but if you had to you can read just this book. This story is set in a fantasy world of Briggs creation, some in the world have the ability to wield fire.
What I think about this book: I will admit that I did not read the first book in the series( but I will be going back to do so) so it took me a few chapters to figure out what was going on. Once I worked that out I quickly became engrossed in the story and fascinated. Briggs did an exceptional job of developing her characters and world . I love how Tol was conflicted with many of the twists that confronted her, but she demonstrated steadfast and loyalty that is inspiring. I recommend this book to fantasy fans, not just Young Adults. My 16 year old son also gives it 5 stars and has requested I buy him the first book in the series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
The Immortal Abyss is a Young Adult Fantasy written by Katherine Briggs. It is the second book in The Threshold Duology. Tol, an orphan, grew up in the farthest regions. She wants only to serve the Rebellion who want to reclaim the throne and the Abyss from the surviving dynasty.
The author takes you on twists and turns and more with the characters and storylines in this book. As Tol works to reach Rebellion Sympathizers, she finds familiar figures haunting her dreams. The idea of a Starpalm and other ideas presented in this book kept things interesting.
Tol’s journey includes being confronted with reconciling faith and duty. She illustrates determination and more throughout the pages of this book. I really felt the author did an excellent job creating a fantasy I wanted to read and would have found acceptable for my children to read.
So, if you want a Young Adult Fantasy, check out The Immortal Abyss by Katherine Briggs.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
An epic adventure awaits in this fantasy book. With creativity and great detail I walked beside Tol as she starts her mission. She has a message to deliver and will fight for freedom. Along the way many obstacles try to stop her. I couldn’t believe the twists in the story as well as who she could trust. Is she strong enough to survive? I liked that we get to discover her background about her parents and how she grew up.
Her gifting is unique and at tines I think she wanted to use it the wrong way out of frustration. The story is well paced and oh my the characters that are also featured are incredible. This book has a theme of faith and finding at who you are. She will have to make decisions that could cause chaos and sacrifice. Every page I turned I kept waiting to see if Tol would be able to do the right thing and not be discouraged or maybe slip to the other side to fight. Get ready for a great book with a good theme and outstanding characters.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Youth Fantasy is not a genre that I usually read. The Immortal Abyss by Kathrine Briggs is Book 2 in the Threshold Duology series. I was intrigued to read this book as I have Read Book 1 already.
I was able to get reeled into the book and storyline within 2 chapters. Tol is the main character in the book and she has had an interesting life. Orphaned at birth and raised in the desert. Tol discovered her special love for Fire Wielding. Tol is able to wield fire from her palms and she enjoys it. Tol's main purpose is to deliver of message to others, one that could be life changing. She has finally come to the realization that she can't do everything on her own and she needs God's direction and help to get her through life. I believe the message in this book is "Trust in God's plan not our own". There are many twists and turns in this book and it keep me interested in this book. Katherine Briggs has a GREAT style of writing and I enjoyed this book! I I HIGHLY recommend this to fans of Youth Fantasy. INTRIGUING BOOK!
𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫: 23/24 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐞: Fantasy 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: I'd borrowed eleven homes and outgrown ten guardians. 𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐐𝐮𝐨𝐭𝐞: M2M
It feels like a very long time since I last posted a book review here 😩 Life happens but finally, another finished book for me. The Immortal Abyss is the second book from The Threshold Duology. From start to finish, this story will keep you flippin its pages. I was kinda confused at first since I was expecting a different scene, but enjoyed how the author wrote to connect the two stories. Really enjoyed Tol, Bohak, and Roji. Why do I feel like I needed more stories about them?! 🥲 Tol's character is relatable. With her struggles, questions, and how she fought until the end. I loved how the author woven themes of faith in the story.
This book feels like a combination of Dune and Avatar the last Airbender (focused on the fire nation), but have so much more to offer. It is already released so grab a copy now! I'm adding it now to my list of must haves in Amazon. 😊
Wow. I’m not sure how a book can be simultaneously filled with heart-pounding action, and yet demand to be savored instead of devoured, but Briggs has done just that with The Immortal Abyss. I was hooked from the first page, and through all the twists and turns of the story, I was kept guessing.
Tol’s fierce determination to aid her country in any way necessary is incredible, but well balanced with the crippling pressure of past failures and expectations of those around her. Her character is relatable and compelling, and the journey she goes on is inspiring.
Set against a fascinating desert backdrop filled with dragons and fire-wielders, this story keeps you glued to the page, not just to find out what happens next, but for the deeper truths hidden in it of hope, healing, and being made whole.
🔥a prophesied fire wielder faces a curse and her own fate
I was definitely not expecting the point of view switch from book 1 (𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑬𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑮𝒂𝒕𝒆) to this book. Following Tol, Seyo's childhood friend/foster sister, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑰𝒎𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒃𝒚𝒔𝒔 is a desert fantasy (yay!) with unique, complex characters, amazing world building, and some stunning plot twists. I really liked Tol as a main character, and Roji stole the show as a supporting character. One other thing I loved about 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑰𝒎𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒃𝒚𝒔𝒔 was the lack of romance - a rare feat for a YA novel. I think Tol was a much more developed character with the focus on her platonic relationships and not on a love interest. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑻𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝑫𝒖𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚 is definitely one I'd recommend to teens!
🔥content Violence (fight scenes, some deaths). A character is sold as a slave but escapes.
This book was absolutely amazing. I loved how we are introduced to Tol, who was mentioned, but not present in the first book, and I grew to love her so much. I loved how she truly does love her people and wants what's best for them. The journey that she takes is absolutely incredible and honestly heartwrenching at times. (I can't say much more because of spoilers.) I WISH there were more book set in this world.
Also, Roji is an absolute sweetheart and I love him so much. (Just had to say it.)
I love how these books have depth and tackle some heavier topics, such as the fear of judgment, redemption, and what mercy truly looks like, but it does it in a way that doesn't feel like it is wallowing in it. There is a certain level of hope and optimism infused into a heavy story that truly does shine the light of Christ.
This story had so many twists and turns I was always guessing at what would happen next! Enemies becoming allies, and vise versa, left me turning each page wondering how it would play out in the end. I was not disappointed! I loved everything about how this story unfolded, from Tol becoming something everyone feared, to Roji and his faithfulness to her, his country, and his God. If only all of us could find such a true friend. I will say, make sure you read the books fairly close together, I had to keep referring to the first book for reminders on happenings and characters. This was a wonderful story that I'm sad has ended!
I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book. I am not required to leave a review. The comments and opinions expressed are strictly my own.
I read The Eternity Gate when it came out and thoroughly enjoyed it, but Briggs really ups the excitement, intrigue and adventure in this book! The characters are well thought out. I appreciated the way that Tol struggles with her gifting and the things she is told about herself. The other characters are all unique and interesting. The story was great, full of twists and surprises. I was never bored because I was so curious as to what was going to happen next. A great read of characters facing incredibly hard circumstances and decisions, but with a hopeful overtone. I received an eARC but have also preordered the hard cover book as I know I am going to want to come back to this one!
The Immortal Abyss is a sweeping tale full of twists and turns I didn't see coming. This story thoroughly pulled me into a desert world filled with delightful characters and adventures, keeping me turning page after page. I adored Tol as a protagonist and fully support the romance. Overall, this is stunning conclusion to The Eternity Gate! Well done, Briggs!
A note for sensitive readers:
Quite a few mentions of soothsayers and dark powers. All of this is clearly shown to be evil and not much detail is given though the reader can understand what is happening.
Epic twists and turns await you in this wild desert fantasy. Briggs brings her duology to a close with a bang! If you like magic systems, you're going to love this book. My favorite parts were figuring out how the 4 Forms of fire worked and I loved journeying with Tol as she learned to wield her powers. Oh, and the ending was NUTS! I remember loving the Eternity Gate's ending. If you liked that one, you'll love the last 1/4 of The Immortal Abyss.
