I never imagined my life intertwining with the rake next door. I laughed at the thought. John Paul Beaumont, the Earl of Derwent, was known for his unchecked extravagance. He teetered on the brink of financial ruin as his reckless expenses knew no bounds. My father, a successful merchant, proposed a solution to save the Beaumont our marriage. Reluctantly, I agreed, driven by familial duty and a hidden curiosity about the handsome man behind the title. Our union began on rocky grounds, with my skepticism clashing with his selfish charm. But as we faced the challenges of estate management together, a transformation took place. John Paul, inspired by my dedication, embraced change and responsibility. I, in turn, discovered his vulnerability and sincerity. Through trials and triumphs, our initial resistance gave way to a profound connection kindling a fire in my heart. We went from reluctant partners to true companions, proving that even the most pragmatic arrangements can blossom into enduring love. For love is all that matters…if our love is true.
I liked this sweet and clean, slow burning romance. The plot is well written and has marriage of convenience, class disparity and opposites attract tropes. The characters are very likable, I admired how Isabella remained sensible and compassionate, despite adapting to her new role as countess and facing obstacles and gossip, and how she supported her husband. John Paul‘s character makes a great development for the better over the course of the book. It was also delightful to read how their relationship developed into a true supportive partnership and love.
John Paul Beaumont, the Earl of Derwent has driven the family estate to the brink of ruin with his extravagant lifestyle and his employees and tenants despise him due to his irresponsible and uncaring behavior. When his rich neighbor Mr. Darlington, a commoner and merchant, proposes a marriage between him and his daughter, he accepts.
At first, Isabella struggles in her new role as countess and the cool attitude that is expected of her. But she doesn't let herself be put off. Isabella is determined and enterprising, and soon manages to get the estate back on its feet.
John Paul comes to admire his wife’s efficiency and compassion. Under her guidance, John Paul develops into a good businessman and landlord of their estate. Despite their growing affection, misunderstandings, his sometimes reserved behavior, gossips and obstacles lead to conflict between them...
Overall, a sweet, slow burning love story with great character development.

This is a rather sweet story. Lord Beaumont lived a life of extravagence well beyond his means. With no parents to guide him, he suddenly found himself in jeopardy of losing his ancestrial home. Upon hearing rumors of the Earl’s financial situation, Gregory Darling, the very successful merchant who lived next door, made Beaumont an offer he couldn’t refuse. Darling offered his daughter’s hand in marriage, along with her sizable dowry and his own business acumen, for a percentage of the future profits. Isabella Darling was a chip off the old block when it came to business sense, but she wasn’t too thrilled about the marital arrangement. What follows is the chaste tale of their eventful and eventually successful marriage. This story has so many ups and downs, many of them quite emotional. Isabella endures comportment lessons in order to become the perfect countess, and Beaumont learns to trust Isabella’s business instincts, even though she is a woman. The Lord Beaumont at the end of the story is vastly superior to the one at the beginning, and I love how the author smoothed out his rough edges. Isabella is a strong and capable guiding force, but she too had some evolving to do. I must say that I liked her a bit better before her comportment lessons when she was nicer to the staff, but her moral compass and her innate kindness always ruled her actions. There is a ‘what’s going to happen next’ undercurrent that helps keep the reader engaged. You will find heroic actions, delightfully romantic gestures, peer reconcilliations, unexpected allies, various surprises, and a wonderful ending that is really a new beginning.
Saving the Earl Next Door is standalone historical romance by Kristina Earl, set in Regency Era England.
The story is based around Lord John Paul Beaumont, the Earl of Derwent. He has very little business or money sense, and as a result he is frivolous and is known for his less than stellar reputation among the ton and even the servants. His next door neighbour is a successful businessman, a man with obscene levels of wealth that could save the earl from financial ruin. When Isabella's, the eldest daughter, hand in marriage comes with the promise of money, investment and financial planning the future for John Paul and Isabella seems certain.
The romance itself is a slow burn. I really enjoyed how Lord Beaumont develops and changes through the story. I also appreciated how this was signified by how Isabella refers or thinks of him - he goes from Lord Beaumont, My Lord to John Paul. And when the earl makes missteps, this was appropriately signified by how he is referred to by Isabella. Isabella is an extremely intelligent young woman and got some of her father's business savvy. Her compassion and empathy rounds off her character and makes her a solid emotional support for the earl's turbulent feelings and development.

Is a sweet opposites attract, marriage of convenience regency romance with no cliffhanger. Some of the lines I really like ----- “As a landlord, your tenants’ concerns should matter to you. As a master, the opinions of your servants should matter. As someone of high social status, the perspectives of those beneath you in status should matter. I’m not saying you should heed every piece of advice, but considering their viewpoints could reveal insights you might have missed. Perspectives matter immensely.” ------- “Next time, when confronting the object of the Ton’s gossip, be sure to have the truth and not some made-up lies.” ----- While the gossip was painful, she knew her own truth and the strength of her character, which would not be shaken by idle talk. She focused on the positive ----- “I was happy today. I am almost always happy when he is happy. Do you know why? It’s because I share my happiness with him and my sorrow, too, and so does he.” ----- I loved Isabella and John Paul's story and I'm sure you will too. It was refreshing to find a heroine that was compassionate, intelligent, knowledgeable about business and financial matters. I received a free ARC and this is my honest opinion.
Well written, full of love, action, a slow burning romance, distrust, hurt, society, gossips and a rake. Earl of Derwent, John Paul is a rake with a bad sense of money , investments and people. He nearly runs his Earldom into the ground by his spending and lack of business- doesn't money grow on trees. His next door neighbor comes to his aide by offering up his daughters hand in marriage. He also is told that Isabella has been helping her father and mother with their own businesses and doing a great job. After the marriage, they have some issues to deal with but are able to work together to help the estate and tenants to regain what was lost. Add in society and the gossips who only want to hurt her and you have a real page turner to read and enjoy. Would recommend this story to others.

Sweet, slow burn romance. An earl about to face bankruptcy, losing everything his predecessors have had over the generations, sees him agreeing to marry a wealthy merchant's daughter.
Isabella is beautiful and smart and capable of running her father's businesses and as his first born, the father takes it upon himself to arrange a marriage between the Earl and Isabella. This shocks Isabella who had discussed with her father the possibility of investing in one of the businesses of the Earl, who happens to be their neighbour, only to hear she has been betrothed to him instead.
They each learn to navigate their differences and accept that marriage is a compromise. They grow to love and respect each other.

Does he deserve her? The Earl of Derwent is as good as bankrupt due to his profligacy. A marriage of convenience is arranged between him and Isabella Darlington, the daughter of a rich merchant. Her enormous dowry should save his face and his estate. The arrogant Earl doesn’t have any consideration for his lowborn wife, who has done everything she could to convince domestics and tenants that the Earl can change for the better. Disgusted by his attitude, Isabella decides to leave him. Will he be able to convince her that he can change? I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
In the beginning the Earl was a stiff stuffy grim man clinging to the ikd ways and manners. I liked Isabella's compassion to help him change his perceptions and help him rebuild and invest to grow their properties and incomes. He did one good thing. He chose Isabella and then he trusted her to help them change their situations in a positive direction. Seeing the Earl change and grow in humanity with Isabella's tutaledge was very gratifying. Her 'PR' campaign and business acumen for the Earl was a brilliant success.
An engaging tale of two people thrust together for mutual financial benefit. John Paul, the Earl of Derwent’s profligate lifestyle has led him down the road to bankruptcy. His merchant neighbour has a daughter of marriageable age. A business arrangement is made and both parties marry with the intention of making the Derwent estate profitable. How their relationship develops and how their lives and the estate change makes fora pleasurable read.
A Marriage of convenience between the Earl of Dewent and his neighbor's daughter saves his estate from ruin. Making most of their marriage, Isabella helps manage the household into a more financially stable situation. Despite the ton gossip, misunderstandings, emotional instability and slight conflict, their attraction grows into something profound and full of admiration.

It was a lovely story of a romance that began as an arrangement, but regardless of social class differences, past mistakes, terrible gossip from the Ton, and a poor reputation. A determined and strong-willed heroine changes everything. Not only does everything become better, but a beautiful love evolves. In the end, a miracle occurs, and their lives are forever blessed with happiness. I highly recommend reading!
This is a book about a merchant's daughter who marries a nobleman to help him get his estate into the order it was while his parents were living. Both have their own ideas about their roles in society which causes some conflict between them. The novel is a good read, but I felt there was too much narrative and not enough dialogue in the writing. I also had some concerns about the romantic situation between the two protagonists which seemed to be unrealistic.
a stately, rather restrained tale of a rather bipolar man and his rather saintly bride. dealing romantically with the dynastic phenomenon of the arranged marriage. Details of the earl's previous dissolute character are scarce. Gambling is hinted at, neglect of his estate described more completely, as his bride seeks to remedy it. Language is stately, not erotic, but good-hearted. Can a leopard change its spots? This book says yes.
An Earl on the verge of ruin after living beyond his means is given the opportunity to save everything. However it requires marriage to the daughter of a merchant. She's helped her father with his investments. She wasn't expecting for him to include her in the offer. Will they agree to the arrangement? What happens when he finds out she's to help oversee the changes needed? Can he change his mindset and lifestyle? How does the Ton feel about the deal?.

Facing the prospect of gloom the Earl accepts a proposal to save his estate. He has much to learn from his wife as she is ‘smarter’ than he is. Together they weather the storm of jealous acquaintances & find delight with each other. They have much to learn.
This author is one of my favorites in clean historical romance. This book is wonderfully written! A slow burn romance with characters that are just great people! Definitely recommend this book!
