Jamshetji Tata was born in 1839. He started the partnership firm Tata and Sons in 1868. The company Tata Sons Ltd was incorporated in 1917. The Tata Group is the pre-eminent business group in the country today. Giving back to the community has been a strong pillar of the Tata Group since inception, and it has endured for over 150 years. Cultures are not easy to sustain across decades, and this represents a remarkable and inspiring achievement. The authors clarify that this is not a biography (there are quite a few others) of Jamshetji Tata, and instead traces the spirit of the group which has sustained with examples across the years.

The authors point out that Jamshetji Tata was influenced by the Zoroastrian principles of Huma, Hukhta, Hvarshta - good thoughts, words & deeds as well as the Indian Vedanta philosophy. The essence of what Vedanta says, as can be applied to enterprise is –

There are four principles a leader must always bear in mind to do business: (i) self- awareness, (ii) protection of the resources that enable one to do business, (iii) service to others rather than service to oneself and (iv) conduct of one's business with compassion.

The book is organized under the heads of - Philosophy, Purpose, Progress, People, Pioneering, Persistence, Principles, Profit, Perspectives and Postscript. 7 of these chapters have stories from different eras describing actions of the leaders in challenging situations to
to keep the Tata Group ethos alive. As the authors point out, there is a seeming contradiction between profits and giving to community, but the group has struck a good balance with businesses largely doing well and also contributing to community – a rare example of business ventures with a purpose. The stories are many including - Tata Silk Farm, Cancer hospitals, Tata Motors factory in Pune built to be green with a lake, Hydroelectric project in Valvan, Tata Aviation, Passenger Cars, establishment of IISc, TCS, Tata Shipping Line, Tata Chemicals, Tanishq, Covid pandemic support and others.

I have read many of the stories before, but there are still very inspiring. The core philosophy of the group is something other businesses would do well to study and emulate in their own way. The individual experiences & viewpoints of the two authors are expressed in the book in many instances – quite unnecessary as a writing style as it is distracting. I would have like to see more examples from the life of Jamshetji Tata.

The below quote from the book is always inspiring to read:

'We do not claim to be more unselfish, more generous, or more philanthropic than other people. But we think we started on sound and straightforward business principles, considering the interests of the shareholders as our own, and the health and welfare of our employees, the sure foundation of our success'

- Jamsetji Tata, in a speech delivered in 1895

My rating: 4.5 / 5.

A very inspiring book which I strongly recommend.

When I first picked up Jamsetji Tata: Powerful Learnings for Corporate Success by R. Gopalakrishnan and Harish Bhat, I was curious to see how a business biography could offer lessons that transcend mere historical narration. From the very first chapter, I found myself drawn into Jamsetji Tata’s world—not just as the founder of the Tata empire, but as a visionary whose principles still resonate in today’s complex corporate landscape.

Exploring Foundational Principles
In the opening sections, the authors introduce eight core principles—Philosophy, Purpose, Progress, People, Pioneering, Persistence, Principles, and Profit—and frame them as the bedrock of Tata’s leadership style. Reading through each principle, I appreciated how succinctly they distilled Jamsetji’s ethos. For example, “Purpose” isn’t presented as a buzzword but as a genuine commitment to nation-building, which Tata demonstrated by championing India’s first steel plants and scientific institutions. Reflecting on my own work, I realized how often organizations pay lip service to purpose without grounding it in concrete action.

Jamsetji Tata’s Visionary Projects
One of the most compelling parts for me was the deep dive into Tata’s landmark ventures—the Empress Mills, the Indian Institute of Science, and the Taj Mahal Hotel. The narrative around the Indian Institute of Science, in particular, struck a chord: Jamsetji’s determination to bring world-class research to India, despite immense bureaucratic obstacles, reminded me that genuine innovation often requires both bold imagination and dogged perseverance. I found myself drawing parallels with modern startups that aim to disrupt entrenched industries; the story underscored that radical ideas demand both capital and unyielding resolve.

Human-Centric Leadership
Perhaps the section I connected with most was “People.” The authors weave together anecdotes of how Tata treated workers with dignity—insisting on fair wages, decent living quarters, and healthcare facilities long before these became standard corporate privileges. As someone who manages teams, these stories challenged me to think beyond conventional HR metrics. It’s one thing to talk about “employee engagement,” but Tata’s actions exemplified a deeper, more humane approach. After reading these chapters, I couldn’t help but audit my own leadership style: Am I truly valuing my team as individuals, or simply as cogs in a machine?

Legacy and Modern Relevance
Gopalakrishnan and Bhat do an excellent job connecting Jamsetji’s 19th-century initiatives to the Tata Group’s 21st-century evolution. I appreciated their profiles of contemporary Tata leaders who have navigated globalization, digital transformation, and sustainability challenges—yet still invoke Jamsetji’s original doctrines. This bridge between past and present made me consider how every organization’s founding vision can either stagnate or adapt over time. The authors’ insights pushed me to ponder: what will the long-term impact of today’s corporate decisions be, and how will future generations interpret our “foundational principles”?

Critique and Personal Reflections
No book is without its imperfections. At times, the narrative felt more celebratory than critical, glossing over tougher questions—such as how mega-corporations reconcile profit motives with social welfare in the 21st century. I would have welcomed deeper discussion on the ethical dilemmas Tata’s successors face in balancing shareholder expectations with community responsibilities. Nonetheless, these minor quibbles didn’t overshadow the wealth of real-world takeaways I gained. On a personal level, I found the book’s blend of historical anecdotes and forward-looking commentary to be both inspiring and practically applicable.

Conclusion
Ultimately, Jamsetji Tata: Powerful Learnings for Corporate Success left me with a renewed sense of purpose in my own professional journey. The eight “Ps” have become a mental checklist for me whenever I’m evaluating a strategic decision or reflecting on leadership challenges. More than just a business memoir, this book serves as a reminder that visionary leadership combines lofty ideals with unwavering persistence. As I closed the final chapter, I felt not only informed but motivated—to carry forward the spirit of innovation, integrity, and humanity that Jamsetji Tata so boldly exemplified.

Learning is a great way to expand our knowledge, avoid costly mistakes, and make more informed decisions. So next time you're faced with a challenge, seek out the experiences of others and use their tips to make the most of those experiences.

Learning from others helps us grow emotionally, helps us from making mistakes, and can often help with our decision-making.

In everyday life, in a family Older members bring wisdom, calm, dependability, and unconditional love that frame the views of the broader family and shape the future of younger generations. They impart important lessons like the value of patience and perseverance. They have lived through challenging times, such as wars, economic recessions, and personal hardships. Through it all, they have learned the importance of resilience and maintaining a positive attitude.

At many junctures, these learnings were preserved in the form of written documents. Written documents have played an essential role in shaping human history for centuries. From ancient civilizations to modern societies, the preservation of information through written records has allowed us to understand and learn from the past.

Written records are the main source of information about work that has been undertaken, decisions made and implemented, and incidents that have occurred.

Here is a book offering a record of learnings from the life of India’s early entrepreneur JAMSETJI TATA.

“JAMSETJI TATA- POWERFUL LEARNINGS FOR CORPORATE SUCCESS “ - the title of the book itself speaks about the volume & the quality of the content in the book.

India's entrepreneurial landscape began flourishing long before independence was attained. Legendary families Tatas, Birlas, Godrejs, Wadias, Ruias, and Bajajs established their empires.

In Bombay, Dinshaw Petit and Jamsetjee Nusserwanjee Tata built huge industrial empires in India.

He is known for his philanthropic activities and equally being an exponent in the field of business. One such is that - “The factory should give back as much as it can to the community, which is the driving purpose of the Tata group.”

The History of Philanthropy -Using one's wealth and resources to help others was considered a virtue. In India, the ancient concept of dāna, or the act of giving, continues to be central to Hindu, Buddhist, and other religious traditions and it is believed that giving to others will bring good karma.

From about 1880 to his death in 1904, Jamsetji was consumed by what has to be the three great ideas of his life: setting up an iron and steel company, generating hydroelectric power, and creating a world-class educational institution that would tutor Indians in the sciences. Some of the stories in this book contain invaluable lessons about his persistence.

Jamsetji Tata’s ideas, guided the Tata group for over 150 years now which we all know very well, but How? Is what the book speaks about? There are a whole lot of Lessons for today’s managers, entrepreneurs, and students of business.

The eight principles of the Tata group which this book talks about will appeal greatly to youngsters who belong to Gen Z and Gen Alpha. This book is for all age groups. The essays and stories in this book are short and simple, yet deep and powerful. They will appeal to one and all.

To lead by example means to guide others through your behavior instead of your words. You intend to inspire others to copy your behavior. The priorities you set, the choices you make, and the things you do every day say it all — and people will take notice.

One such inspiring personality is JAMSETJI. The author –duo – R. GOPALAKRISHNAN AND HARISH BHAT has made a huge collection of information and made this book interesting with many a class of anecdotes.

Do grab a copy of the book and start reading, takeaways are more than you expect.

My curiosity about Indian businesses grew after a series of research into Chinese businesses. Therefore, Tata was the first business I wanted to understand its motivation. This Group is the most respected in India (existing for 157 years) with Jamsetji Tata and his two sons (Dorabji and Ratanji) building its foundation – individuals born and influenced by the progressive Parsi movement in India.

The book only provides a brief overview of important details during Tata's first 50 years (1868-1920), where Jamsetji built the most successful textile company in India – Empress Mill (learning from Japan's silk weaving industry and work style). This was followed by American Steel – with leading scientists (represented by Perin) surveying across India for many years. And an Indian Institute of Science, symbolizing education, a place for researching inventions and innovations in business, a place that trained many scholars who made great contributions to the nation, and where his statue was erected almost by accident, as the authorities initially feared the project's failure.

He was a pioneer and greatly benefited from India's "self-reliance revolution" (named Swadeshi). In 1907, over 232 lakh rupees (approx. 1.5 million GBP) were successfully raised through a public stock offering (after the Tata Steel project was denied a loan by London). The insane success of Tata Steel immediately impressed all of India, with over 1500 million rails produced to supply Mesopotamia for the British war effort in World War I. Immediately after the first steel bar came out in February 1912, by November 1918, Tata Steel had expanded fivefold, with production always exceeding design capacity by 30%. Subsequently, the strategy of persuading trade protection from Britain and focusing on modernizing domestic infrastructure helped Tata Steel overcome the shock of cheap steel after the war.
This was followed by two major hydroelectric projects, Doodhsagar and Ghats, providing electricity to Bombay and textile mills. Additionally, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel project also symbolized the aspiration to build an icon that would overshadow all other hotels...

Interesting stories! But they haven't truly satisfied my curiosity about Tata.

Having recently read Girish Kuber’s book on The Tatas, I was expecting Harish Bhatt’s ‘Jamsetji Tata’ to be a more focused account on the life and times of the founder and patriarch of the group. Clearly I hadn’t read the title of the book carefully!

The core argument of the book is that the Tata Group, as founded by Jamsetji Tata some 150 years ago, has yet managed to retain the core values as espoused by the founder. While there have been many storied business leaders in India and world over who have been known for their value systems and ethics, there are very few instances of such values seeping through a business group’s successive generations in a manner that they are considered almost synonymous with the group. In most cases, these values get diluted or even lost as the baton passes on to the successive generations! This distinction makes the Tata Group stand tall amongst many business houses across the world.

The book warps and wefts through successive generations of Tata Group Chairmen and other group stalwarts, using stories and anecdotes to identify and showcase these values of Jamsetji. In the process, the reader gets a fun and unique appreciation into the different businesses, challenges faced by them and the group at different times and how different Group Chairmen dealt with each of these challenges. By bringing in stories from different eras, the authors also succeed in demonstrating how these values have been exemplified by successive leaders of the group. Some of the values / themes touched upon by the book include aspiring, giving back to society, nation-building, upholding moral responsibilities over and above legal obligations, care of the employee, talent identification and development, and so on.

For a 2024/25 book, it is however remarkable silent on Ratan N Tata and somehow chooses to end its journey with Jamshedji Tata. That is probably the one flaw in the book, a flaw which may remain forever as it is unlikely that another will pick up the same theme and update it in some shape or form to also include RNT.

A slow start, but a fun book thereafter. Some bits which are more general gyan, but then not surprising in such an endeavour!

With numerous books out about Jamsetji Tata, this particular book is not a biography, rather an account of how the business philosophy of Jamsetji Tata has been retained, renewed and reinvigorated for over a century and amongst generations of Tata leaders, and this makes this one a unique read.

Widely known as the father of modern Indian industry, Jamsetji Tata set up his partnership firm in 1868, and the businesses under the name of Tata Group still continue to grow and flourish. Jamsetji Tata has been a key catalyst in the economic growth and development of the country.

The book contains narratives and lessons on leadership and business in ten chapters, each titled with a P, namely philosophy, purpose, progress, people, pioneering, progress, persistence, principles, profits, perspectives and postscript. The reason to read this book is these leadership lessons that we get from the very best. The Tata Group being a leader in the industry as well as in philanthropy, ensuring to remain SHE- Sustainable, Humane and Enlightened, is a remarkable resource of insights.

The book is full of engaging real-life stories of the iconic leaders of the Tata Group and interesting anecdotes that went into the making of popular brands like Tata Steel, Tata Tea, Tata Motors and Tanishq and many more inside stories of TELCO and more. I never knew Zudio, Westside, Croma are all offerings from the same Tata Group.

Having served the Tata Group for years, the authors are no newbies and are already renowned personalities themselves. The book is extremely insightful, informative, engaging and interesting. This is my second read from the author Harish Bhat, and i equally enjoyed both his works. The content proves to be worth the time. Definitely recommended.

It is the journey of a person, rather an individual equals to an institute, who has spent his whole life to flourish the corporate world and made India a big name in the global economy.

This insightful book delves into the life and times of Jamsetji Tata, the visionary founder of the Tata Group, one of India's most iconic entrepreneurs.

This book has portrayed his attitude, aptitude; dreams, creativities, motives, movements; decisions, cultivations; philosophy; overall everything from his struggling days to the moment of reaching the peak of success. Overall the entire graph of his life, professional and personal, have been highlighted. This book is not just a biography but a practical guide for business leaders and entrepreneurs but also a powerhouse of positivity and enthusiasm.

The authors' accurate research and meticulous composition have left a mark of subtleness which deserves only superlative remarks. The engaging writing style makes the book an enjoyable read, while the inclusion of relevant anecdotes and historical contexts have made it an informative read.

Overall "Jamsetji Tata: Powerful Learnings for Corporate Success" is a handbook of inspiration for all who dream everyday and has the attitude to do anything to make dreams come true.

Easy read - being an Indian, one obviously knows a lot about Tata group as one which is ethical and holds strong positive reputation in my mind like a lot of others. The books covers some examples from Jamsetji and other Chairmen from Tata group like Dorabji Tata, JRD and Ratan Tata. I dont promise anything new from the book or any framework etc, but reading it increases the respect for the group even more. If we were to look around, there are fewer companies that can be noted who are as respected in the Indian corporate world. Tata is possibly one of the only ones which have held philanthropy at this esteemed level. Plan to read more on Tata group to be reminded of how honesty, integrity can be bed rocks even for business.
