In an effort to calm the conservative court faction's ire - and the progressive faction's enthusiasm - Jurao and Braelin continue to attend public events together. Meanwhile, they learn more about old acquaintances and make new friends as their relationship continues to grow.
I downloaded this series of books on a whim. I have been giving books that have an intriguing premise a shot for at least the 1st book and though it has not paid off a lot of times, the times it has I have discovered books that have become favourites. That is the case with this series. This is a story I will be coming back to multiple times over the years if not before the end of the year.
The covers are not what we are used to seeing but they encapsulate the story so well. The topic of 2 disparate species/beings being romantically linked is out there too, though not as much anymore with the spread and popularity of monster romance. But this is unlike most monster romances. The main leads focus more on the romantic side of the relationship and the way they do not mince words and have such compatibility with each other is a joy to read.
The approach to sexuality, types of partnerships (platonic, romantic or sexual), pronouns and gender identity has been handled well. Though there are areas where great detail is given, like the demons appearances, there isn't a great emphasis on how people are addressed w.r.t. their pronouns or gender expression. It is partly explained away by a spell that is all over the realms that translates languages as people hear them and later explained. clearly when the matter comes up. The world building is impeccable and interesting too.
The relationship between Braelin and Jurao over the course of these 6 novellas has been wonderful to see. The support each gets from the other is wonderful to see. The support they get from their family and friends is great too.
The side characters are getting fleshed out as the story goes on and I am liking that. I am having fun learning more about Feyl and the other department heads. The convergence of Braelin's family in the Demon Realm is something I look forwards to. I am looking forward to Braelin and his siblings finally being reunited with their parents and also want to see how Braelin handles being an uncle.
I have discovered this series is on Royal Road and a chapter gets released each week and it is ahead by maybe 10 chapters on that site so maybe I will follow up on the story there. I cannot wait to read more of this wonderful story.
