Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
2.5 - beautiful art, but VERY all over the place. I’m sure if I had more lore knowledge of Marvel comics as a whole it would be easier to follow, but I don’t.
This was fine. It was transparently a cash-grab anthology related to "Agatha All Along," despite having almost nothing to do with that version of the character. The Fantastic Four stuff was fun but dated. The Midnight Suns stuff was better, but still clunky and a tad confusing. I appreciate the character's roots a bit better now, but I was only mildly entertained.
The old Fantastic Four comics at the beginning were not to my taste, but the second half of the book with the more modern Midnight Suns comics were pretty good! Took me awhile to get through bc I’ve been busy with work and the beginning kinda put me off with the older comics, but enjoyed the newer stuff at the end
I usually am not the biggest fan of the early era of comics but I found the Fantastic Four comics included in this collection to be quite amusing, I would rate all of the comics included in this retro first half at around 3 stars. It was interesting to see Agatha's origins.
The second half I really enjoyed, as it is actually just the full run of Midnight Suns, a comic which I was intending to read anyway. This arc features more characters who I enjoy quite a bit (namely Magik and Nico Minoru) and the setting of Strange Academy. I thought some characters were a little stagnant (Nico is worried about making do without the Staff of One, Wolverine hates magic) but overall liked the art and storyline a lot, I would probably rate this arc 4-4.5 stars on its own.
I'm knocking my ranking of this TP as a whole down to 3 stars though as I do not love it as a collection meant to explain Agatha, particularly as a marketing tie-in to the show Agatha All Along. I understand the need for brevity - an omnibus of all of her appearances would be a much different undertaking than this project - but especially considering her current role in the MCU, it was bizarre to me to touch so little on her relationship with The Scarlet Witch. I would have preferred at the very least a written summary and names/numbers of the other issues she appears in between those comics included in this book (like how is done in the X-23 omnibus).
Overall enjoyable, definitely made me interested to watch Agatha All Along and play Marvel's Midnight Suns, so at the very least Marvel did succeed with their marketing ploy, even though I think it easily could have been improved.
Good, if jumbled, history of Agatha Harkness. This collection is mainly a way to catch up on the character for the show "Agatha All Along" (which is great, by the way) but I'm not sure it really clears much up.
Agatha is a much older woman in appearance in these stories, except one with flashbacks, and none of them have anything much to do with the show.
Agatha is a powerful witch, centuries old, with undefined powers. The collection includes some old Fantastic Four stories from the 1970s that I remember as a kid, especially the glorious villains the Salem Seven, who really ought to get more to do on their own.
Then there are much newer stories from a series called Midnight Suns that I missed the first time around, with an interesting combination of heroes from the X-Men, mainly, tied to Agatha and other magic folks.
The stories and styles are from very different eras, so it's an interesting look at how things changed from the 1970s to the early 2020s. And also how Wolverine is somehow everywhere, whether it makes any sense or not.
All in all, it's an entertaining read, and could be accused of being a cash grab for the show, but it's still well worth reading, and the stories are a fun look at very different eras of comics.
This collects a bunch of early appearances by Agatha Harkness from 1969 to 1980, as well as the Midnight Suns series from 2022. The transition can be a bit difficult due to how different the writing style is, and even though I enjoyed it, some readers may find either the classic or the modern run not to their taste.
The classic stories get 4 stars from me, because they do a pretty good job of showcasing Agatha's persona, and they're pretty fun too. What I liked: the way Agatha dispatches the Frightful Four in FF #94, what a badass. The New Salem depicted in FF #185-186. The Agatha-Nicholas Scratch dynamic from FF #186 and FF #223. What i didn't like: the way Sue is written in the possession storyline, too whiny and borderline incompetent. Too little Wanda & Agatha, I don't know what else is out there but I would have traded the third FF story for something else.
The Midnight Suns only gets 3 stars. It's an interesting story and team, but the writing felt a little imbalanced at times and the art isn't the most exciting. What I liked: the villains were cool (Valtorr and Korrosion); Magik and Blade were cool too (special shout out to the awesome new suits); the flashbacks to young Agatha and the story before the story. What I didn't like: the ending felt rushed, like there was this great looming threat for 4 issues and in the final one the big villain turned a bit cartoonish in behavior. Nico Minoru whining almost every issue about how she no longer has enough power due to something that had happened in another series.
Clearly this was made to capitalize on Agatha All-Along getting released on Disney+. The comic book character is so different though. She's a really old lady. And then the issues contained are so different. You have her first appearance in Fantastic Four when she takes over raising Franklin Richards. Then when she goes to train the Scarlet Witch in Avengers. Then the stuff with Nicolas Scratch and the Salem Seven back in FF which all stinks. The latest of these was 1980. Then we jump to the Midnight Suns miniseries that came out in 2023 and also isn't very good. It's quasi-based on the terrible video game and just feels really slapped together.
Despite my love of art and superhero stories, this is actually the first "comic book" I've ever read due to my odd difficulty with following graphic novels. Something in my ADHD brain just struggles with it. But, there was a reading challenge and I absolutely adore Agatha Harkness, so here we are.
The early comics with the Fantastic Four were especially weird and not at all what I was expecting, but I really enjoyed the Midnight Suns part. The artwork was terrific and I knew most of the characters well enough to follow it even without any backstory.
I really really hope Marvel puts out a new Agatha Harkness comic book soon to reboot the character based on her Agatha All Along tv show. The more retro comic books for the first half of this collection felt so weird and out of place. Even her personality in the Midnight Suns felt drastically different from the character that was in the show. I really just want more comic books with the badass witch and less of the sweet but powerful granny.
Ended up reading some of this in a separate trade but this is a good compilation of Agatha's early history with the F4. Comics from the 60s and 70s can be ROUGH to read, but it is interesting to see the origin of various aspects of comics we take for granted today.
After watching Agatha Harkness, I needed something to fill the void. Dad was able to find this. It is absolutely amazing. But I now need to find all the comics that weren’t in here, but still have Agatha in them.
3.5 rounded down just because the first half and second half seemed so disjointed. I loved the Midnight Sons collection, but the Fantastic Four barely gave enough Agatha to feel like this was truly a collection only about her!
The fantastic four half felt so pointless, like she interacted with wanda once in an avengers comic and then she just went back to being a nanny for franklin but idk 🤷♀️ The midnight suns half was very fun tho 🙂↕️🤞
I only started this to see if comics were for me, they’re not. I love Agatha Harkness as a show but I was fully confused since these comics don’t go in chronological order.
