From greed and dissent the darkness has risen. Taken from another, their power unbidden. For they shall not rest until they rule all. And in their victory, the realms shall fall.

Elsie Aitken believed she understood her world. But her grief-laden heart, and everything she thought she knew about her family, are about to be tested.

Thrust into the hidden realm of the Seelie—beings she only thought existed in folktales—Elsie discovers a world at war.

Corrupted magic, shadow-wielding rebels, and the threat of the human population being enslaved or eradicated, leaves the destiny of both worlds hanging in the balance. With no immediate way to return home, Elsie's fate becomes entwined with Elfayne's, and an unexpected bond with the Crown Prince leads to a far deeper connection to the mystical realm than she could ever imagine.

A Legacy of the Light is a romantic fantasy with suspense and adventure inspired by Scottish folklore.

As a mother to young children, long gone are the days I can can immerse myself heart and soul in a book, lounge on the sofa, wrapped in a throw, cup of tea in hand, devouring a book in a weekend.
This book had me hooked from the start. It made me long for those days again, so what's a mummy to do?
I had no other choice but steal alone time all weekend to get through just a few more pages, another chapter, I was obsessed, reading during the kid's swimming lessons, at the park, on the loo, at 3am settling my small people back to sleep, at a child's party...a true smutopath!! Elsie would be proud.

I loved everything about this book, beginning, middle and end, the tears, laughter, and smut. Tavish will forever live rent-free in my head, and for this incredible gift, I truly thank you, Amy!

I'm off to wallow in post-book-blues.

I’m pretty new to fantasy, and honestly, A Legacy of Light by Amy Reading was the perfect book to ease me into that world. I loved how you discover everything alongside the main FMC. There aren’t pages and pages of heavy world-building; instead, you’re learning as she does, which made it so easy to get lost in the story.

The characters are so well written and feel completely real. They’re the kind of characters you grow attached to, like you’ve known them for ages. The world itself is gorgeous too, detailed enough to pull you in without feeling overwhelming.

There were so many wow moments, twists, and turns that kept me hooked from start to finish. And that cliffhanger?! Honestly one of the best (and most evil) I’ve ever read. I dropped half a star purely because I’m still recovering from it 😂

I genuinely couldn’t put this one down and loved being completely immersed in the Seelie world. Thank god book two is already out cos I’m diving straight in!

5 ⭐️ AND MORE!
I cannot believe what I just read. What an incredible story from start to finish. I adored Elsie and loved her bond with Rayne AND Tavish. There were so many times I saw everyone being so kind and considerate to each other and it really warmed my heart. THEN CAME THE CLIFFHANGER. WAY TO LITERALLY THROW ME OFF A CLIFF AMY 🤣

Romantasy is not my genre at all but when I heard this had a Scottish theme to it, I knew I had to try it. Really enjoyed the characters and the world the author created. One of my issues with fantasy books is that some are too complicated with character names and places and it becomes an effort to need a map and family tree. This was not the case, easy to follow along with and yet rich in details. Lots of twists that keep you interested and intrigued. Can’t wait for book 2.

This was another book where the FMC isn’t some 17 year old and i’m so here for it. Elsie definitely felt like she was on a very similar wavelength and I found myself laughing out loud at her sass. Only thing I would say is that I kind of say the twist coming as it all seemed a bit too good to be true. I did wonder if betrayal would come from a different character but I’m glad it didn’t. All ready to read the sequel now!

Favourite quotes include:
Fundamentally, I’m against being a kept woman. I make my own way and won’t depend on anyone. But the way he’s looking at me right now makes me want to throw all my feminist beliefs out the window.

No parent should have to bury their child

A smutopath. Someone who can read the dirtiest, k*nkiest book in public with a straight face. You would never know what they’re reading.

OMG, okay, so this totally took me by surprise!

I initially struggled to get into this book; I felt the pacing was a little off during the first 100 pages. However, I am so glad I carried on, as I'm genuinely taken aback by how it ended!

A Legacy of Light is a fantasy romance based on Scottish folklore. Elsie, our FMC, is trying to navigate life after losing her Mother and Grandmother. Overwhelmed with grief, her Grandpa and best friend, Rachel, try their hardest to help her. On the night of her birthday, her Grandpa gifts her a necklace, and the truth behind everything is soon revealed. Thrust into a new world surrounded by magic, secrets, a rebellion, and a budding romance, everything Elsie ever knew is about to change.

After my initial struggle, I slowly started to understand and appreciate where this story was going, and I learned about an entirely new world and magic system. A Legacy of Light is a different take on current fantasy romances, and I enjoyed reading about the elements of Scottish folklore infused into the plot.

Although parts of the plot were slow and some things predictable, I thought this was written very well, and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. The plot twist at the end had me gasping, and I am so glad I can read the next book immediately!

A Legacy Of The Light is a brilliant romantasy book that had has me in a chokehold since I finished it last week! Since the death of her mother and grandmother Elsie floats through life, existing rather than living. But when she wakes up in a distant realm after receiving a family heirloom, the secrets of Elsie’s family are about to unravel.

From the very first page, I was drawn into the Seelie (think Scottish Fea) world. Amy does such a great job of creating a detailed but accessible fantasy world. It was so easy to understand but so beautifully described, I could picture is so clearly!

Our FMC Elsie, is a character I felt so connected to straight away, her journey of finding herself amidst grief is profoundly moving, making her an inspiring and relatable heroine. She also has such great wit and I enjoyed her inner monologue, one liners greatly!

Prepare to add a new book boyfriend to the list…Prince Tavish, a charming and deeply loyal character with a dirty mouth and a Scottish accent that had me swooning.

The spice in A Legacy Of The Light was spiiiiicing, and if you love slow burn then this one is for you, that payoff after so much teasing is perfection! 😮‍💨 But as well as spicy scenes it was the tension and the burning questions I had that kept me reading until 3am, desperate to know the secrets of Elsie’s family!

The themes of overcoming loss and stepping into your true self resonate deeply, making this book more than just a magical adventure and a testament to the power of Amy’s writing and how you can overcome anything in life.

If you love your romantasy books with richly developed characters, intricate but easy world-building, and an emotional core I highly recommend this book! Amy has crested a masterpiece that will stay with you long after the last page…plus the way you are going to NEED book two!!

I’m going to keep this spoiler free, but it will be difficult to fully explain what I liked about this book without them!

Firstly, I really appreciated a different angle on a Romantasy book. I’ve read so many recently that all follow the same pattern and this was certainly something different, the ending.. half I saw coming and half I didn’t, which surprised me!

The spice was good also, well timed and well written.

I really loved the found family and friendships. Reyne ❤️

The things that didn’t land well for me in this book which is making it a 3⭐️ is the dialogue was a little heavy handed, and the pacing felt off. In the middle it felt like a lot of slow paced repetition, then the twists at the end felt like we didn’t have enough time for them.

I also felt that some of the more modern real life references were a little jarring, but that’s likely just a personal preference.

Overall it’s was a good debut book and I’m intrigued to see how the next book plays out!

- Review -

It is not often that you stumble upon a debut novel, love it straight away and find yourself wondering when the next one is coming out. With A Legacy of the Light this is exactly what I experienced!

This is a romantasy novel with themes of Scottish folklore in which we are introduced to the Seelie and the world of Elfayne. This was an instant hit for me as I have a huge soft spot for Scotland and the highlands so this immediately peaked my interest. The female main character Elsie is dealing with the loss of her mother and grandmother when we are introduced to her, the theme of grief is prominent throughout the story and is handled so well by the author. Elsie is living a normal life until she isn’t. Suddenly she finds herself thrown into the world of the Seelie, the Scottish fae, with one particular fae prince capturing not just her interest, but that of the reader I have no doubt.

This is a spicy romantasy with mystery, magic and great world building that I found easy to understand and not at all complicated. Book one ended on a huge cliffhanger, I had my suspicions in respect of one element but the other blew any mind! I was not expecting it and I can’t wait for book two to find out what happens next.

A Legacy of the Light is a brilliant debut novel for Amy Reading. It has everything you want as a fantasy reader; a mystery, a forbidden love story, an ache for lost family, family still there, and a twist I was yelling 'Noooo' at the book for at the end!!! I'm not over that ending and am glad to know there's a sequel, as it definitely can't end there. It was beautifully written, with all of my favourite tropes crammed together within a well constructed and thought-out book. Well done, Amy! What a debut.

If you haven't read this then WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!
Best thing I've read in a while, the ending ATE. I literally couldn't stop fidgeting and squealing from the twists, turns, and emotional roller coaster. That ending was everything I aspire for my own writing.
Also, Elsie? I've not loved a FMC this much in a long while, her humour is brilliant and the way Amy writes about grief, loss, and coming to terms with it is so authentic. You will not be disappointed!

A fantasy read you can’t put down!

A fantastic fantasy read with strong character development, easy to follow world building and relationships you can just get lost in!
Elsie’s journey through her own grief and transitioning into a stronger version of who she used to be, is relatable to any person who has ever experienced loss in their life. The story expresses these emotions beautifully and allows the reader to understand that grief is a powerful process but one that with time you can overcome.

If you are not a fan of spice then do avoid this book!! The tension between the characters is sexy and intense building up to 🌶️🌶️🌶️ !!
Overall fantastic read and leaves you on the perfect cliffhanger in preparation for book number 2! Highly recommend.

✨BETA READER REVIEW✨

So I have the unbelievable privilege of being the authors sister and I have read draft, after draft, after draft of ALotL and after many a late night discussion on when to add the smut and what the title should be, I have watch this book evolve into something that is so raw, human, emotional, healing, fun, witty & downright spectacular!!

And I know what you’re thinking, she’s the sister, she’s totally bias…but you’d be wrong if I didn’t like something Amy knew about it, if something didn’t flow or a word didn’t quite fit I’d be the first to tell her, it brought true meaning to ‘your harshest critic and biggest fan’ because let me tell you I cannot get enough of this book🥰🤯

The rollercoaster of emotions is wild and watching all the pieces fall together to make such a gorgeous, well thought out, flowing piece of art, I couldn’t quite believe all of this was falling out on my sister head and onto the page. Amy builds the world that is Elfayne in such a magical and real way that you could pluck it out of your brain and draw picture after picture of this beautiful land and its creatures🧝🏼‍♀️

Never assume with this book, just when you think you have everyone sussed out and you know where the story is taking you BAMMM plot twist & full body chills hit you like a freight train🚂

Amy has put a tiny piece of herself into Elsie which makes me love this character even more. Elsie can be broken at times and she has suffered huge losses but it doesn’t define her she is also fierce, loyal, stubborn and powerful. Elsie loves deeply & will protect her chosen people at all costs, if Elsie trusts someone you’re on that journey with her 100%.
Her inner monologue has me howling out loud because it’s so honest and blunt I know I’ve said similar things to myself on several occasions! I think her banter/humour with the other characters is possibly my favourite thing about the writing!🤣

Now let me tell you about Tavish DREAMBOAT Logan, I swooned, I melted and I now have a new found obsession for the Scottish accent - if only Seelie were real, because I’d hook myself up to a Tavish sized IV and never want off that ride🥵🥵🥵

Two more honorable mentions are (F & R) I won’t spoil anymore names but these two have a special place in my heart, how they’ve developed and their relationships with Elsie just makes my heart so happy and if you don’t fall in love with (F) we can’t be friends. PERIOD.

This was my FIRST ever romantasy book, I’ve dipped my toe into fantasy with this one and now I’m so ready to open up a whole new genre for myself. My imagination/creative brain loves this kind of writing and it is super special to me that this was my first. Now I’m screaming for more of the Elfayne universe, Amy get writing pretty please💖

HIGHLY RECOMMEND 10/10/10 ACROSS THE BOARD!!!

BETA READER

I had the pleasure to read A Legacy of Light as a beta reader and let me tell you, it was so good!

Amy's book is absolutely enchanting romantic fantasy that swept me off my feet. I’m a big fan of romantasy and this did not disappoint. The spice and romance was definitely one of my favourites 🥵🔥

What really stood out to me was the world-building. Elfayne feels so vivid and alive, filled with intricate details that made it easy to picture. The conflict with the Dorche rebels, who want to invade the mortal world, adds a lot of depth and urgency to the story.

Elsie is such a fantastic main character. I loved her inner thoughts so much. She's relatable and likeable from the start, and her journey is full of raw, genuine emotions that really hit home. Her connection with the Crowned Prince, Tavish Logan, is beautifully done. Tavish is a great character—complex and charming—and the slow-building romance between him and Elsie kept me hooked.

The tension and build-up throughout the book are spot on. I was on the edge of my seat, especially as the plot twists and turns toward the end. Speaking of the ending—it had me in a chokehold (in a good way)! It was surprising and left me eager for more.

The emotions are raw and authentic, and I loved how they were portrayed. Elsie's grief and determination felt so real, making her triumphs all the more satisfying.

Overall, A Legacy of Light is a fantastic debut that promises great things from Amy. If you love a mix of magic, romance, and adventure, this book is a must-read. I can't wait for the second book 💖

Highly recommended!

THIS BOOK!!!! I don’t know how the universe works but I was blessed to randomly meet the author on the internet and got an advanced copy of this book. I barely have words to describe how good it was! First of all, it solves all of the typical issues I have with fantasy/romantasy books. The world building is very slow and woven in so that it’s conversational and makes sense without having to read 45 paragraphs of it and memorize 8,000 character names lol. The story is great. The spice and slow build is fantastic. And… omg the humor in it… I found myself cackling at so many funny lines. Elsie and I share an inner voice for sure. I laughed, I swooned, and I cried!! Do yourself a favor and pre order this or add it to your TBR asap!!!!

After losing her mother and Granny to mysterious circumstances that she can't quite get her head around, Elsie is navigating her way through life alongside her Grandpa and best friend Rach. The grief is overwhelming and she seems to have lost many so called friends along the way who just couldn't be there for her like she needed. When her Grandpa gifts her a mysterious necklace for her birthday, the truth behind it will soon be revealed. When she wakes in a completely new world surrounded by magic, mysteries and threats from monsters and rebels - everything Elsie thought she knew is about to change.

This was a great debut and I so admire an author that can think up a whole world completely different from our own with it's own magic system, history , enemies and rules that seem so believable. The world we are based in is Scottish inspired and the world was so vividly written on the pages that I could see exactly what Elsie was experiencing.

The twist honestly had me gasping, I was so shocked at what happened and am so excited for the revelations in Book 2.

If you like the sound of:
- scottish inspired romantasy
-friends to lovers
- shocking twists
- great female friendships

Then this is one to add to your tbr.

Thank you to the author and Bee Blossom PR for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

Ok, so my theCovenbookclub witches have been on to me to read this for a while, so I finally obliged.

Hands up, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It starts off a little twee, very cookie cutter paint by numbers fantasy/romantasy. I felt the first quarter of the book was a little trope-y, but by god, stick with it, there is a VERY good reason!

I liked Elsie. I found her morose stand point a little challenging at times, but everyone deals with grief and loss differently, so I forgave her multiple times. Besides, she had a lot of shit to deal with, bless her. I enjoyed her growth from helplessness into her own power.

The world building was great, her having to research it all gives a very organic structure to this. The introduction to the magic system is brief, but breadcrumbs have been laid out for further books, so I’m looking forward to that.

Also, bravo for introducing a female friend who’s an actual friend and not just a cardboard cutout. I loved Reyne and believed in their friendship.

Tavish is suitably devastatingly handsome and the spicy scenes weren’t too cringe which I really appreciated. Nicely done!

I had a theory about the twist out about 65% of the way through and I was right (Whoo!), but there were hints before that that were niggling away in the back of my head.

Really looking forward to the next instalment!

Oh wow. Is all I have.
The start of this book didn't grab me. Some of the references to things such as Beauty and the Beast felt out of place. And how human Tavish came across felt so bizarre.
However, I refuse to DNF a book so we read on!
I predicted that Elsie was a Seelie, and that she was one of the Royals that disappeared/died. I think this was intentional as the foreshadowing was very evident and beautifully done. I enjoyed watching this character become who she was born to be. A Seelie in her own right, learning her history, and how to defend herself. I do love a good training montage and this has plenty.
I enjoyed that you witnessed the training and progression. Some fantasy novels are known to skip the training and the FMC just goes straight to fighting like a soldier with no time put in. So I really enjoyed that.
Reyne is awesome. On so many levels. I really liked the side characters. They had back stories, their actions logically made sense. All of the characters were so well written, this definitely helped to feel invested in their story.
The twist at the end. Oh my god. I don't want to spoil it, but my jaw dropped so far I had to scoop it off of the floor. All throughout I thought the book was predictable, typical fantasy. No no. I did not see that coming at all and now I need the sequel because what.
A really epic fantasy story. I loved it.

What was that ending! The whole time reading it, my thoughts were “this story is so sweet”. Get to the ending and it’s a cluster f*** that just drops with a HUGE cliffhanger! I loved the romance through it and then just WHAT! I did NOT see that coming and was surprised in a good way. The only thing that threw me off, I was not expecting to see Rachel there. Her best friend that stuck by her no matter what and the only friend that stuck by her? I almost feel sad for her because that makes that friendship seem forced almost, like she had to be there for her. So that was a little weird to me. But everything else was just 🤯. And I don’t believe it for a second! I immediately want to jump into book two because I NEED TO KNOW! The setting of the story was beautiful, such beautiful descriptions. Slow burn romance with just enough smut. True underdog story and you really feel for the character who goes through a lot and continues to accomplish all hurdles that seem impossible and everything that is thrown at her. So well put together and easy to read and nice flow to the story. Excited to start book 2!

A Legacy of the Light is the kind of book that completely takes you by surprise. What starts as one story slowly unravels into something much bigger and by the time you reach the end, your mind will be blown. The twist and turns are executed flawlessly, leaving you reeling. Set in a modern day Scottish-inspired world where the human and fae realms collide, this story has an incredibly unique magic system and rich political intrigue. It’s an adult fantasy romance with a friend’s to lovers slow burn that simmers at about a three spice level once it gets going. The FMC is thrust into the Seelie world and finds herself caught in a realm torn by corrupted magic, rebels, and war. The MMC will live rent free in my head for a while-he is pretty unforgettable. There’s adventure, suspense, and a cast of side characters that makes you fall in love with this world. The bonds and friendships formed along the way make this an emotional and enjoyable read. By the end, I literally sat there thinking, “I cannot believe what I just read.” Buckle up because this ending will twist your soul.

Elsie, painfully ordinary Elsie, wakes up after a night out not just in a stranger's bed but in a whole new realm entirely. With a handsome princely chaperone, a quiet librarian and a firey warrior behind her, Elsie unravels the dark secrets of the magical realm, with its past deeply intertwined with her future.

This book epitomises what I want in FMC fantasy books. It's got action. It's got magic. It's got snark. It's got creatures. It's got a ball complete with dresses. It's got kickass women who become firm friends. It's got smut. It's got heartbreak. It's got a major plot twist and a major cliffhanger. This is the blueprint now.

Being so typical of the genre, some of the arcs are somewhat predicatable. And then to completely oppose this, the biggest plot twist is incredibly late in the book, leaving the reader with major whiplash. I was glad to have the sequel ready and waiting for me, because I needed more.

This book chewed up my heart and spit it out over a cliff and into the ocean and was eaten by sharks. I am emotionally WRECKED over this book. This book was SO well done. Plot line- check. Heart breaking backstory- check. Delectable MMC. Absolutely. Amazing FMC who is dealing with some of the most difficult loss to then have the support of two of the most awesome supporting characters ever. She’s here. There’s magic, there’s prophecies, slow burn, banter, political intrigue, tension. Everything. Let’s not forget the friggin’ BETRAYAL that literally had me BAWLING reading this book. BAWLING. I was hesitant, suspicious, but most of all hopeful only to be absolutely CRUSHED. I was so in denial about this one. I haven’t cried this hard over a book since perhaps Kingdom of Ash or Shadows So Cruel but the difference in those soul crushing stories is those losses weren’t from betrayal and deceit. It’s going to take me a while to recover from this one. On to book two….

This book had me captivated right from the beginning. The mysteries were real, and the intrigue was endless. Elsie’s processing of her loss was so real and made her very relatable. Her conversations with her friends literally had me laughing out loud. The level of female badassery in this book is exceptional. Her relationship with Tavish was also hilarious and spicy as all hell. The plot twists in this book had me doing double takes, and the ending... holy hell. I cannot wait to find out what happens next because I saw none of that coming. Honestly the only thing I can even think to compare it to is the end of the movie Crazy Stupid Love where I was just like “whhhaaaaaaat”. If you like spice, magic, laughing out loud the banter is so good, and insane plot twists this book is for you.

What a delightful turn of events in this book! I was given book 1 to read as part of being an ARC for book 2, and went into the story mostly blind. I was lured in by the connection to Scotland, because its like my favorite country ever, and was not disappointed. With magic and faeries quickly making an appearance, I was settling in to enjoy the story. At times Elsie irritated me, but her character traits came into play with an ending that had my jaw dropping on the floor by the end of the book. I definitely looked up and said "holy shit" a few times. I thought it was going to be smooth sailing but then the author gut punched me - there's a bit of foreshadowing that makes it all make sense by the end and I said "aha that's what that meant! I knew it!". I eagerly jumped into Book 2 and can't wait to see what is in store for Elsie and her friends.
