Rate this book
Stride makes a hasty and cataclysmic decision to take his position as ruler of the underworld, sending Zero to a new and hopefully happy life far from the evil machinations of Planet X.

Stride takes control of Planet X, eliminating the vampire queen and taking over full control. However, he can't do this with Zero by his side and after some scorching lovemaking, sends his blood slave to a new life on Earth.

As Stride grapples with the reality that his demonic reign entails, Zero lands on a strange and different Earth that resembles nothing he remembers. He discovers that the great final war has given rise to a whole new race of beings and, forced to plunge into a new existence, all he can think about is...Stride.

This chapter is an odd mix between a short but intensely loving breather and the most serious threat to Zero and Stride so far. I was just beginning to enjoy the new closeness between the two vampires, when the first warning sign appeared. Stride withdrawing is never a good thing, and this time is no different. He only does it to keep Zero safe, but guess what? These plans never work. Maybe Stride should have watched more TV… But, I digress.

Zero and Stride are finally both sure they love each other – and that is, of course, when real disaster strikes. Stride doesn’t think he has a choice and does what he thinks is best for Zero, not asking him what he may want. Zero is helpless to stop Stride initially, but will do everything in his power to find his lover again; thus invalidating everything Stride has done to protect him. Purposes, cross-purposes and both men ready to sacrifice themselves… it gets to the point where I almost wished they were fighting again. At least the lines were clearly dawn in the sand then and I was less confused!

What I loved about this chapter is the depth of emotions these two men feel for each other and finally admit out loud. Stride’s determination to do the right thing and destroy the Vampire Queen no matter what the cost speaks more clearly for him than the accusations of him having used the dark powers, damning him to become a demon. Zero’s devotion to Stride and his stubborn insistence of seeing the good in him was very touching. These two are really coming into their own now – and with only three chapters to go, I am afraid we will be in for a wilder ride than ever before. I can’t wait!!!

If you like men who know what they want now but can’t get it due to exterior circumstances, enemies who seem to have been vanquished but you’re sure will somehow find a way back to do some more damage, and like to be kept in suspense you will most likely adore this chapter of the serial as much as I did.
