A cursed shifter. A desperate human. The bargain that steals her freedom and dooms his life.

Going unnoticed is one of Mena’s best skills but when she rescues an otter in the forbidden North Sea, she catches the eye of the one fae who can’t look away from her. It’s clear the rakish Corvin likes to flirt and play games. So when he teases his intention to carry her off, Mena can’t be sure it’s merely a taunt. After all, she’s just a spinster stew cook.

But after her ship strays across the King of the North Sea’s magical boundary, Corvin is revealed as an enforcer, required to patrol fae water and destroy all who cross. Fae law has no mercy, and neither does he.

The ship must be destroyed. Mena and Corvin strike a Everyone aboard will be spared, but only if she becomes his.

Mena’s sacrifice ensures the crew’s survival and her mother’s safety, but now she’s trapped at the bottom of the sea, in a cold cave strewn with the remnants of other wrecks with no chance of escape.

Mena's handsome captor is not exactly who he seems. Corvin is trapped by his own bargain, owned by the King of the North Sea. If they are found, they'll face swift, torturous execution. Because by the king's command, shifter fae cannot have mates, and they're forbidden to save humans. But now that Corvin has found his fated mate against all odds, he can’t let her go. Even if it costs him everything.

The romance creeped me out, plain and simple.

He kept putting his hands/claws on her throat. Why? That’s so creepy and NOT romantic! Not to mention he said no less then ten times that he wanted to “carry her away” in the first few chapters and I’m sorry I don’t find that romantic, I find that in need of a restraining order.

Despite that it was well written, I liked Mena, and Tagger the otter was cute; I’m always up for an animal sidekick in my stories, just not this story.

I have a strong feeling things romance wise are going to turn too lusty for my tastes, this isn’t the type of “kidnapping romance” I’m comfortable with, and I felt like this was leaning towards being a cleaner (maybe?) version of those “dark romance” books those weirdos on TikTok are obsessed with and that’s totally not my vibe AT ALL.

So I’m quitting. And I sure hope the other book I have by this author isn’t the same…

‼️Content (up to 31%)‼️

Language: bastard; damn; damn it; son of a scallop

Violence: a sea monster tries to attack a character (it’s driven off); injuries and blood (not detailed); a girl slaps a guy; a ship is violently destroyed

Other: fae that can shape shift into other creatures; magic

This fantasy book had a fresh story to tell. I like the take on the fae characters and otters! The romance is quick, but the story is told well, I did feel the ending was a bit rushed. No smut, but some steamy scenes. Ya appropriate.

I was provided a free copy of Trapped by Claws by Jessica M Butler to provide an honest review prior to the official publication date.

Overall 3.5/5 stars. I loved this book. I thought it was a super cute fantasy and a quick read. I would recommend this book as a light fantasy/adventure read. It has shifters, danger, fated mates, some world building, and no spice beyond a few kisses.

Mena is on a voyage/quest with her mother to find her missing sister who was supposedly taken by fae years ago. Mena thinks this quest is a hopeless and assumes her sister is dead but her mother is a zealot who is determined to find some way to rescue her daughter from the land of the fae. Because of this aspect, Mena is the caretaker of the family and is very practical. She is quick on her feet and earns the nickname “clever girl.”

Corvin is a shifter fae who stumbles upon Mena and makes a deal with her to take her to his home. He is perfectly adorable because even though he is a dangerous individual with a “touch her and you’ll die” aspect, he’s also very childlike and sweet. He doesn’t have any experience with humans so he’s curious about life and Mena and how she does things. It’s very cute. He and Mena also have great chemistry.

****possible spoilers****

Things I liked:
-the development of the relationship. Corvin is so sweet that it’s impossible not to love him and Mena is a caretaker so it’s in her nature to want to look out for him as much as he looks out for her. They make a great couple and play off each other very well.
-Tagger. I love how he’s a big part of the story and seems to understand what’s going on.
-there was a good explanation on Corvin’s captivity, although it took a while to get there.

Things that could have been better:
-what on earth were they doing on the island this whole time?? I would have liked a chapter or two from Mena’s mother’s point of view or the ship’s captain detailing what happened after the ship was destroyed. They obviously found the portals but what else?
-who is the King of the North Sea? He seems like a big deal but wasn’t explained much. It made me feel like I was missing something from a previous book. I thought for sure he would play a larger role in the story since Corvin was his enforcer.
-the relationship pacing seemed decent but in reality it was only a week. I feel like there was good opportunity for Mena to go through the junk room and create and amazing DIY home for a few weeks as they fell in love. I loved their relationship, but it might have been less insta-love-ish that way.
-the ending? Um is there more? They escaped and then what? Is this where we find out about the King or who Corvin’s parents are, or where Mena’s sister went, or if Mena rescues her mom from the island? Also where are they now? And did they kick the other enforcers back through the portal or are they dead? There were so many open endings and questions.

Anyway, I enjoyed the book. I stayed up late one night and read it almost in one sitting because I liked it so much. But I also like to have my questions answered so that’s the only reason for the lower rating. I hope there’s a book 2 and I hope some of these questions will be answered in book 2! I’d still recommend this book purely for Tagger and Corvin. I liked Mena too but those two were both just such great characters.

I was disappointed by this book, it had a weird pace to it and not a lot happens until like half way through. I didn't really feel the connection between the characters at all and felt it was weird that Mena is so blatantly ignored by everyone on the ship. I thought the spoon was going to play a bigger role since she was so obsessed with the thing.

I do appreciate when the main characters aren't immune to danger and pain but the writing for this felt very childish at times.

Mena and her mother have been trying to find her missing sister Erryn and are currently traveling to an oracle that supposedly will be able to help them.

Mena has given up everything to help her mother find her sister, everything. Andrea is beginning to wonder if they should stop searching.

While traveling at sea to this oracle, Mena sees an otter trying to swim away from an eel, but when she tries to “save” the otter, the eel suddenly starts talking and shifts into a fae merman. And he wants her to come back with him to his lair…and be his.

Mena refuses to go with this fae until her mother tries a crossing in the North Sea that is forbidden and she asks this fae to spare her mother and the crew and she’ll go with him to his lair, and he agrees. And now, Mena is determined to figure out a way to escape.

This is a quick read, it’s novella length. For the most part, I really enjoyed this story. If I focused on the story and less on the detail, the story and romance is very good.

Corvin is a delight. I loved his villainous and possessive nature. It was kind of cute, especially when he seemed to not understand why he felt the way he did and thinking he knew exactly what he was doing 😂 He did a lot of growing and learning in this book and learned sometimes if you love someone, you need to let them go.

Mena was a bit harder for me to like. She was rather annoying and not very smart. A lot of things were repeated and she still asked the same questions and she just felt a bit shallow and not caring until she suddenly was. So, I guess she grew to, but really fast and sudden and she definitely loves fiercely and is very loyal.

The world I loved and would love to explore it more and maybe there will be more in this world!

The climax towards the end of this book got super intense and was a very enjoyable “can’t put down this book” kind of read. It was great.

Oh and there are giant otters. How can you say no to that????

Now, I love detail in books, and I know this is novella length, but that’s doesn’t mean to just skip over detail or explanations. I had a hard time sometimes looking past some missing details in scenes. Sometimes things were happening that I didn’t understand or couldn’t picture in my mind. To try to explain….at the start of the book, Mena ties herself to a rope to jump onto an island and then realizes the boat kept going and she’s following to try and catch up to it and she’s leaping across….other islands? And then she ties her rope to an island and crawls across the rope to the boat? I just couldn’t understand what she was doing to catch the boat, it didn’t make sense in my mind, and there were other similar scenes that made it hard to picture and understand.

Other than that, this is an intense fun read with a cute and enemies to lovers fated mates romance with a bit of a slow burn to it. I definitely recommend this one and I look forward to reading the others in this series!

I received a gifted e-arc to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

“I think maybe people like you are rivers that give until they are dry. Then they mourn, not because they are empty but because they wish so much that they had more to give.” - Corvin

This book knocked my socks off and completely caught me by surprise in the best way. I already knew I loved Jessica M. Butler’s writing, she always has the cutest angsty banter that makes me giggle, but I was not expecting the number of times she would make me cry with this beautiful and heart-warming story!

Trapped by Claws follows after the events of Bound By Blood, but you do not have to read that one first to enjoy this one (although it’s also a favorite of mine and more than worth a read). This isn’t just a story about a girl who makes a bargain and then falls in love with her captor… it’s so much more. It’s about seeing the person underneath the façade. To love them despite their shortcomings and the mistakes they’ve made. To truly accept them as they are. I loved the characters of Corvin and Mena and felt immediately drawn into the story. Tagger is the most adorable otter side kick and this story wouldn’t be what it is without his antics and penchant for being a troublemaker.

Trapped by Claws is the 4th book in Of Seas and Tides, a multi-author romantic fantasy series featuring standalone novellas designed to be read independently. Each standalone features a villain who gets their happily ever after in a swoony, swashbuckling romance. And I am here for it!

FAVORITE QUOTES:

"Because dreams are pointless, unless what you really want are opportunities for disappointment."

"I'm not yours," I sputtered. "I'm my own woman." "You most certainly are." He grinned. "And I wouldn't have it any other way."

Salt's bane, he chilled and heated my blood at once.

"You know, it's funny. People look at me, and they think they know me. If they notice me at all. But they never really see me, and they never guess what I'm actually capable of.

Tears spilled down my cheeks. Looking up into his eyes, I felt—I wasn't just seen. I was seen and accepted and wanted.

"I see you. I love you. I want you. You are my light, my heart, and my home. And if anyone ever tries to take you from me, I'll tear them to pieces and give you their bones."

Well that was unexpected! I couldn't have imaged a ferocious eel chasing a little otter would have set off a story of a fated mates/forbidden love delight, with Fae, a missing sister, a bargain, and a few giggles along the way...

Mena's mum is obsessed about finding her missing sister, following every lead she can but that leaves poor Mena very frustrated, frustrated at her mum, frustrated at the lengths they go to in their search, frustrated with her situation, which makes her feel like a spare wheel, ignored and irrelevant. I enjoyed her immensely, she's so sassy, feisty and fierce. When she saves, or thinks she's saving, Tagger, the little otter, her encounter with Corvin has her senses spinning, yep ALL DAY of them! And the unthinkable happens....She's also very resourceful, with an enquiring mind, which actually has her puzzling over and resolving many things, not least the how and why of Corvin's condition. Poor
desperate Corvin, so lonely he resorted to the forbidden, humans and Fae are just not allowed to cohabit. As a "deficient" or cursed Fae, he can't shift into his true form and only the "generosity" of the King, only the "protection" of the King, keeps him safe. As an Enforcer, he's called upon to do the King's bidding, like it or not. Corvin is so beautiful, physically sure but it's his inner beauty that talks to me, he's so much more than he portrays.

Shoo! The excitement! The hunt, the chase, the escape, the lies and manipulation, the TRUTH is all laid out magnificently. What a deadly, scary world the author presents, but one where true love prevails. How sweet the initial denial of what Corvin and Mena's every cell was telling them, how gorgeous the genuine caring that took hold of them, so very delectable! There were many hairy nail biting moments, especially towards the end where I was certain they would all meet their end. A thrillingly gratifying conclusion. A beautiful love story.

The first chapter pulled me into this story. Mena is on the ship watching an otter get chased by what appears to be an eel. She decides to rescue the otter but is suddenly interacting with a fae. Corvin, the fae, keeps trying to get her to allow him to take her to the ship. Mena can't trust a fae because they are the ones that took her sister. Corvin teases her relentlessly and the banter between the two is hilarious. Then when the ship she is on goes past the boundary of the King of the North Sea, she strikes a deal with Corvin. Mena will go with Corvin in order to spare everyone who was on the ship. He agrees and takes Mena to his living area. The living area isn't great for humans but after a bit Mena does her best to make more accomodating. Then things start getting crazy, with what Corvin admits to her and the King asking too many questions. Mena and Corvin end up trying to escape. It gets intense but I did enjoy the ending.
I really enjoyed this story and would highly recommend it if you are looking for some great banter between two main characters. The story line is great and the world building is awesome too.
I did receive this story as an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

This book has lovable characters: a shifter fae, a clever human, and an adorable, mischievous otter. It has a Beauty and the Beast meets Pirates of the Caribbean vibe. Corvin is an enforcer for the King of the North Sea. It's his job to watch the ships and make sure they don't cross the boundary lines; otherwise, he has to wreck the ship and drown every person on board. However one day his otter Tagger steals the wooden spoon of one of the cooks of a ship on the sea, Mena.

Mena is traveling with her mother on a desperate search to find her sister Erynne. Her mother convinces the sea captain to cross the boundary to pursue another lead to find Erynne despite Corvin's warnings. Mena strikes a bargain with Corvin to save the crew in exchange for her going to live with him in the sea.

The characters seem a bit one dimensional in the beginning, but they grow on you as the story progresses. The pacing was really fast. The characters are interesting to follow so I would have liked to learn more about the characters and the world around them a little more in this book Overall, it was a quick read, and I'm curious about what will happen next.

This book dealt with some difficult ideas (much like the previous book in this collection), but it was offset by some humor. I alternated between wanting to cry and wanting to laugh, which is a testament to Bulter's writing. I have found that I am really fond of her writing.

Mena and her mama has been searching for her sister, and Mena feels that her mother's love only extends to her sister and their desperate quest. However, she sticks by her side and does everything she can to show that she loves her including making a bargain with a dangerous fae shifter to save her life.

The characters were fantastic. Both of the main characters are dealing with different burdens and scars from their families. I would read more stories just featuring this pairing because they are adorable (have I mentioned how much I loved the banter between them?!). Not to mention that Butler has made me want an otter even more than I did before (seriously, the otter is adorable.).

I'm ready to dive back in and reread this story immediately even though I just finished it. Fantastic job!

This was a great read about a human woman who makes a bargain with a fae shifter, give up her freedom to save the life of her mother and the ships crew.

The world building was so interesting and unique. I read this in one sitting it was so good. The banter between the MCs had me cackling. There’s tension that had me sitting on the end of my seat.

Mera is strong, stubborn and feisty. She’s very clever, knows what she wants and not afraid to go after it. I love a MFC like this.

Corvin is a smart ass and likes to aggravate Mera when they first meet. He’s a sweetheart and a gentleman when it comes to her but also fiercely protective. MMCs like this always make me swoon.
“You hurt her, you deal with me,” he snarled
“How can you be so beautiful? So perfect?”
“Mine,” he growled against my mouth

Tagger is the otter buddy, cheeky and adorable, a perfect little animal friend.

This book is a part of a shared world but the trio will get to continue their adventure and I was so excited to find this out.

A Quick Mildly Dark Tale

I always enjoy Jessica M. Butler's stories and this is a great addition.

Mena is a supportive younger sister traveling with her mother in search of her missing sister. Erryn has been missing for years.

In the middle of the sea, Mena sees a distressed otter. She hops off the boat onto nearby small rocks/islands to rescue it. This single event changes the trajectory of her life. Mena is a kind, caring individual.

Corvin is a defective fae shifter who is the companion of the otter. He is playful and fun as he teases Mena. However, he is an enforcer for The North Sea King and bound in his service. He tricks Mena into a bargain: her life for those on the ship. She accepts.

So begins this captivating tale. It's quick but so satisfying. There is a dark side to this tale and I do hope the big bad eventually gets what he deserves!

A fated mates story

A shorter read but full of action, humor and fated mates.

Tagger is the sweetest little sidekick otter and was so cute throughout the entire story.

I would definitely read more from this world especially with the premise of the evil King of the North Sea, the other shifter fae, the lost sister, portals (which the stairs have appeared before in Bound by Blood so I’m excited for the possibility for more) and the dwarfs.

A m/f romantic fantasy set at sea. Lots of hurt comfort, fated mates, a fight for survival and magic. A short standalone but a richly described world that could easily expand into a series.

One pov told in first person

Characters-

Philomena Ophelia Lyster - human female

Corvin - shifter fae male

Tagger - otter sidekick who’s the best

Steam - clean with some heavy kisses

Book 4 in the Of Seas And Tides multi-author collection

You had me at baby otter, but then you topped it by adding a favorite fantasy creature.

A twisted, bargain-filled enemies to lovers fantasy romance with tons of humor, banter, tension, angst, desire, and love that pulled me in from page 1 and held me captive til the very last word. And, let's not forget about the adorable sidekick. The characters face their own struggles and impossible choices, but they're resolved to help each other.

Well-developed, strong characters. Intricately detailed world building to transport me onto the page of the book along the way. Captivating plot.

Trapped by Claws caught my attention right away! I immediately loved Mena’s sheer determination, loyalty, huge heart and wit based on the first page of the book. And it just got better from there. Corvin’s witty banter with Mena was absolutely everything and had me giggling while kicking my feet in the air. I knew that this would be good by their immediate chemistry alone. And Tagger made the cutest little otter sidekick 😍

Overall, this was such a fun read and adventure! Though this was a fast-paced book, there was still so much character growth! Though I am not a big fan of insta-love, what else should you really expect when it’s a fated mates trope? Corvin’s story made my heart ache and when the bond finally clicked in, I was smiling ear to ear. You gotta love a protective alpha cinnamon role MMC ♥️ I am pumped to read the other books in the series! Thanks so much to the author Jessica Butler for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

a wonderful sea adventure with some cozy vibes

I fell in love with the story within the first few pages. I do have to say if I am not hooked in the first chapter I usually struggle to finish the book.I was so invitested I stayed up until 2am to finish it, not a normal thing for me.

It’s more swashbuckling than rom com but it’s still very cozy. Both characters were complex and likable. Mena and Corvin both seem adrift in their own respective responsibilities but not really living life. They were able to bring so much out of each other and develop along the way.I adore the otter, he adds so much to the story.

The romance was swoony but just kisses. I hope to read more in this fantasy world!

“A gorgeous man finally wanted to talk to me, but he was a fae intent on tormenting me. Sounded about right, actually. How dare he. How dare he be so attractive and so horrible at the same time!”

I fell in love with @jessicambutlerauthor’s writing when I read Bound by Blood and Trapped by Claws is just as fantastic! There’s banter and a lot of heart in TbC. Really enjoyed this novella that is loosely inspired by the little mermaid (& genderbent) 🥰

Mean and Corvin’s story is a true redemption story with paranormal romance as well. He is a diseased or cursed water fae ( he thinks ), she is a ships cook assistant searching for her younger sister who went missing years ago. The ship she is on is perilously close to the North Sea Kingdom and will be destroyed if it crosses over the line ( which moves )! I adored the characters as well as the storyline, I just wish the pacing at the beginning could have been better, though it does speed up and stay on track the last half of the book. 4✨’s and I’d definitely read the next book from this Author !

As a romantasy reader, I fell in love with this gender-bent Little Mermaid x Howl's Moving Castle fairytale twist! The author immediately shows us the feisty side of the FMC Mena and the goofy side of Corvin, which was so refreshing! As I got further into reading, the author did an amazing job of revealing the MC’s hidden emotions and the trials they face. Although there are no spice scenes, Jessica Butler was able to capture the slow-burn atmosphere perfectly! If you're looking for a fun fantasy read with twists, an evil Mer King, a super adorable Otter friend(like seriously you’ll wish you had one 😂), and forbidden romance, I highly recommend giving this book a try!

COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! I’m just going to pour words out that describe this book:

Adventure
Suspense
Adrenaline
Banter
Family
Heartache
Lies
Love

I may add to this list as I think of more words.

I loved the world building, it was so easy to picture the settings as the scene played out. It was also easy to visualize the characters as they were described.

The story pulled me in right from the first page and the fast pace kept me anchored.

And the pet! Oh so adorable!!

I love this couple so much and I cannot wait for more adventures with them!! I need more now please!

I might have stayed up until 1 am to finish this book…on a work night.

When I was reading the blurb the phrase “Antagonist-to-lovers” stood out to me. Now I am a huge fan of enemies-to-lovers, but antagonist-to-lovers is a trope that I have never heard of before so I wondered at it. And it might just be my new favorite thing!

Within the first few pages of the book, the MMC was indeed an antagonist! He frustrated the living daylights out of the FMC and it was HILARIOUS!

Fated mates, action packed fights against giant crabs, a corrupt king, and absolutely brutal enemies. And an adorable otter best friend are all extra reasons to read this book along with the swoony hurt/comfort bits. Though be warned, you will be craving beef stew after reading this

Trigger Warning for a mother daughter relationship wherein the mother doesn’t see or value her daughter for the sake of her grief.

Truly a quick read

This is a new to me author, and a quick read. I liked both Mena and Corbin, as well as the otter friend, but as I mentioned this is a quick read with a mere 226 pages. That is not enough time to flesh out the characters, plot and world. I typically don’t like to read short stand-alones as they leave a lot to be desired, and that was the case with this book. I gave it four stars because I knew all of this beforehand, but still wanted to give the book a try. If you are looking for a simple, fast read with fun characters, then you may enjoy it.

This was a cute fated mates story between a human and shifter fae. Mena and Corvin's love story is filled with many trials and tribulations. Neither were out looking for love, and Mena fought it harder than Corvin, but love is a hard thing to ignore, especially when there is a fated bond driving you together.

I would love to see more of Mena and Corvin's adventures, and even though this is a stand-alone, how it ended definitely leaves it open for more.

Thank you for allowing me to be an early reader!

This was such a fun read. I love how even in the serious moments a joke or a sarcastic remark is never far behind. Corvin is such a teddy bear MC and Mena is her own independent woman who come together to make the cutest pair.

I can’t wait to read more from this author. 🖤

A cute fantasy, adventure, romance, with an adorable otter named Tagger that you just want to scoop up and run away to cuddle with. I got a twinge of Beauty and the Beast sort of vibe. But then when you get deeper you see where it is different. There are a few things that gave me questions, but all in all, a fun easy read.
