Rate this book
When an old lover returns from the dead, is he real or is this more malevolent magic from the Vampire Queen of Planet X?

Stride and Zero battle nonstop evil forces in various guises, whilst struggling with their growing feelings and dependency on one another. Both vampires are shocked when Zero’s dead human lover, Daken, turns up claiming he never died and that he was saved by blood on the ground after Zero left him. Stride doesn’t believe him.

Zero however, tormented by feelings of guilt, remorse and also fondness for the former commander of his starship fleet, wants to believe the man is real and is happy to see him again. He wants to give Daken a chance but Stride is infuriated. Could he possibly be jealous? The strange planet on which they are stranded suddenly morphs, transporting the vampires and Daken into yet another unusual odyssey, plunging them into a new and potentially deadly adventure on the eve of a legendary natural catastrophe.

Chapter number five of this truly epic adventure was yet another surprise. One of the things I wanted to know (curious as I am) was more details about Zero and Stride’s pasts, including their lovers. Some revelations about Stride’s old lover have already been made, so in this chapter the focus is on Zero’s ex-lover, Daken. Well, sort of, since he is dead – except in this installment he comes back to life and causes all kinds of mayhem.

Zero, of course, is ecstatic to see Daken again. For him, Daken represents everything a relationship should be. Even thought he is falling for Stride, he doesn’t want to and having been turned down and humiliated once too often, he jumps at the perceived opportunity to return to love as he knows it. Needless to say, this doesn’t quite turn out the way he expected, and even though I suspected it couldn’t end well, the truth, when it comes out, hit me almost as hard as Zero.

Stride, mistrustful vampire that he is, is less emotionally involved and doesn’t believe any of what he sees. He has also had more time to get used to the way his arch enemy (his own mother) works. What I thought was really interesting to watch was the vehemence of his reaction. Jealousy does not become anyone, but it was fascinating to see the first minuscule crack appear in Stride’s emotional armor. Obviously, he denies everything and closes it up almost as quickly as it appears, but still. It made me smile.

This was yet another amazing episode in a sweeping adventure. If you like to see your heroes suffer, both emotionally and by being thrown into yet another impossible situation at the end of the chapter, you will probably like this chapter. I loved it and look forward to finding out how Zero and Stride will manage to get out of imminent danger – yet again!
