This book hit a little heavier than some of the others in the series. It is still fluffy, I wouldn't call it serious, but the character motivation gets pounded into the reader more often. I didn't mind, but didn't enjoy as some of the others.

Lady Emily's Matchmaking Mishap is the newest entry from one of my favorite “sweet” romance authors Sofi Laporte and the fifth entry in the Merry Spinsters, Charming Rogues series. The books are not connected and can be read in any order.

Pros - I'm having trouble putting into words (without spoilers and sounding trite) exactly what I enjoyed about this book. Tropes I generally don't like (false identity, miscommunication) were as always, handled deftly by Laporte. Characters were well developed and likeable. The plot wasn't as silly as some of the previous entries in this series, and allowed me as a reader to truly feel the gravity of the past circumstances that affected the two main characters.

Cons - What is that meme...not gonna lie, you had me in the first half? I almost put the book down after the first chapter due to the basic face level plot of the story (false identity, taking advantage of the elderly or infirm). However, I KNEW that there was more to the story and the truth was revealed really very early on, allowing me to empathize with the main characters. No cons. This is a near perfect, lighthearted historical romance novel, in my opinion.

In Laporte's latest newsletter, she mentioned how she struggled to complete this book. Her efforts paid off. It is one of her best to date. I have a general book rating rule I follow: if a book makes me laugh out loud or cry real tears, it's at least a 4 star novel; if it's a book I can reread again and again it's a 5.

Overall - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice level - 🌶️ kisses only

I received an ARC of this book for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

This was a pleasant reading, but not my favorite from Sofi Laporte. The book took itself too seriously, for such a farfetched story.

This is a story of childhood friends (more of pen-pals, actually) turned lovers. With plenty of miscommunication, false identities, secrets.

What I always liked about this author were the light-hearted stories, unbelievable but cute, with plenty of humor. Here... the humor was missing, unfortunately. Although a lot of situations could've become comical.

Also... what disturbed me a little, was this.
In the letters they wrote to each other, she seemed like a little child, while he sounded like a young adult. In love with a child.

Okay, they waited 4 years before they decided to elope... but still. How old wore they??? She still believed in fairies! You don't go from that to wanting to get married in just 4 years!

3.5 ⭐️ I had to suspend some disbelief, but overall it was pretty cute. I wished we had got to see more of their love story develop more. We had the letters, but even though went to friendly to more pretty quickly, we missed a lot in between. And then later on I felt like I just didn’t see why they were in love now. I wanted more conversations between the two of them.

A funny and light regency, totally absurd and unbelievable. Don't look for any historical truth there, but if you want a jovial, irreverent romp, this book will deliver. The ending was a bit pat, like in fairy tales, but the story and the characters worked - if you disregard the 'unbelievable' part. Overall: immensely readable.

This book specifically: bruh not fake dating but make it regency 🫪

The series so far: i’m writing this in a literal fevered state so buckle up. this has been a hilarious day. here are some patterns i’ve observed during my analysis of these texts over the last 24 hours:

-a lady protagonist with uncurlable hair (until a magic maid coaxes out a curl at just the right moment)
-calling men rakehells (valid we gotta bring this one back)
-referring to a meal called “nuncheon.” disgusting. that phonemic profile is nasty idc how pleasant the meaning is.
-male protagonists who have the worst imaginable reputations but then they end up being nice whatttttttt? they were just ACTING like the worst person in the whole entire world for the absolute strangest reasons. One of them was supposed to have ruined 234 WOMEN? and the girls are like noooo that’s so crazy let’s kiss tho
-men who have PLOTTED AND SCHEMED like no diva you’ve ever seen before, often since literal CHILDHOOD, to get the girl of their dreams. i’m talking multi-DECADE master plans at times
-the last 30% being straight up exposition. like okay here’s the twist let me spell it out for you in this 50 page address
-the twist usually being that loverboy IS the guy she originally thought he was but now we’re all confused because the plot misdirects you between two people it could be the whole entire time
-a woman failing to recognize who the man before her is despite the literal flashbacks every 3 pages telling all of us exactly who he is
-no one is ever ACTUALLY a brokey or an uggo it just seemed that way!!!!!
-a straight up literal and unironic scene where the male protagonist finds the lady’s ankles sexy
-a woman being literally so so terrified of the rakehell. he’s like a fox. she’s like a little baby bunny. and then literally out of absolutely nowhere she pranks him??? like a super intense prank? like pouring alcohol in his eyes? MAAM u good???
-one of our lovers not knowing what to call the other one after the wedding because of the 3738228365 aliases this person has contorted into
-random 21st century phrases like someone getting “roasted” or being told “do what you need to do”

(but ig im still having a good time) (this is embarrassing) (they aren’t good) (but they’re fun)

Lady Emily’s Matchmaking Mishap is so cute, a whimsical little tale woven with magic, revenge, and a love that refuses to fade.

The magic comes in the form of a forest fay, a mysterious being who grants wishes to those whose hearts are kind. A lonely boy wishes for a friend. A poor but good‑hearted young lady wishes for something more. And those wishes ripple outward in ways no one could have predicted.

At the centre of it all is a woman who blames a duke for her father’s death and for the struggles she and her sister have endured. Her anger, her grief, and her determination give the story its spark but it’s the love threaded through the pages that gives it its soul.

Because this is also a story about a bond so strong it survives distance, time, and heartbreak. All that’s needed is to find the one you lost… and to recognise them when they finally return.

It’s charming, magical, and full of heart, a delightful little adventure wrapped in romance.

Listened to the well performed audio. It was cute enough. Palate cleanser. Had the miscommunication or I should say, failure for the H to communicate, trope to add plot angst. That was kinda annoying but it was an easy listen.

4 stars may be a little generous but this was a captivating read. It seems you have it all figured out but there were some interesting twists and some surprises at the end. Emily was a little too good at fabricating but she was just so very genuine that I had to cut her some slack. This is not your typical storyline but I enjoyed it.

This was sooo cute! Such a fun regency romance. It started a little silly but by the end everything came together so beautifully! I think these can be stand alone reads. Not sure how the rest of the series ties in. I’ll definitely read another one.

This is a lighthearted story and an enjoyable read with mistaken identity, false names, secrets, bitterness, surprises and a happily ever after. Or even two. Feels like a fairy tale. Enjoy.

Wow. Ok, where to begin… This book isn’t flawless. It’s a regency that doesn’t read much like a regency. Those looking for a book strictly true to the time period will likely be disappointed… You also have to suspend disbelief at several points (like how a couple of penniless commoners would be able to fake nobility without any prior exposure, or how anyone would think tricking someone into marrying their beloved sister is revenge)… And there’s the matter of complete insta-love on the part of the FMC…

And yet somehow this book was utterly captivating, haunting even. I could not seem to put it down and stayed up ridiculously late into the night/morning reading it. And now that it’s over, I can’t stop thinking on it. The characters, their interactions…

This book is less silly and more serious than others of the series. It’s still light and entertaining, but not purposefully ridiculous. The writing style is smooth and engaging, and I loved the way Sofi used their prior correspondence to build out their relationship.

Highly recommended to those with proper expectations.

Content:
There is no foul language, sex, or violence. The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. There is no real mention of faith or God.

DNFed at p. 227.

I had high expectations of this book, but it was a big disappointment.
I think this may be the first time I have actively disliked a regency romance.

I seem to be in the minority, but I just really couldn't get into this book, as small things kept on irritating me throughout the story.

My first problem was Emily's inaptitude. She and her sister are supposed to be living a difficult life and are basically con artists, posing as noble ladies and distant relations to old people with money, but they are naive at best and painfully silly at worst. I mean, they decide to try to trick the Duke into marriage, to get revenge, but don't realize how incredibly unrealistic that is (two penniless women without any connections, no money or posession and no servants, traveling alone). I would have believed it more if they planned to acquire an invitation to the party and then rob him, but get him to marry the sister? They would never have pulled it off, and even if they had, they never thought of the consequences of what would happen when everything was revealed. Even if the marriage had not been annulled, I doubt it would have been pleasant to live with someone who despised you for deceiving them. The whole plan is stupid and not well thought out, and Emily is not capable of coming up with believable lies, so it doesn't make sense that they managed to deceive anyone so far (unless of course the previous people knew exactly what they were up to and took pity on them, but that wouldn't make sense either as they would then have found other ways to help instead of letting them continue the mascquerade). She makes a blunder from the very start: she mistakes the duke for the coachman (whom she should have recognized as a noble despite his clothes due to the way he carries himself and talks) and then tell him she is a lady's maid only to perceed to tell his "would-be employer" that she is a lady with a completely different name... Like that wouldn't be discovered immediately...

Also, a lot of things doesn't make sense: how could Emily and Cecily be posing as noble ladies when they grew up as the daughters of an impoverished schoolmaster? They would have learnt to read and write, perhaps, but I doubt they would pass for young ladies. How could Emily mistake the duke for a coachman? In the chapter in his POV it seems like everyone in the inn recognizes him as the duke and keeps their distance. And the kiss scene! Kissing someone publicly, even during a charades game would not be proper... and then everyone proceeds with kissing their charades partner as part of the game...

I did think the letter exchange was cute. It was the most engaging part of the book. However, when they start to develop into love letters, I was a bit exasperated. At first, we are given the impression that this was an exchange between children, and I wouldn't have minded if it were just a childhood crush, but then the aunts talk about why the duke is so moody and cold, and they think it is because of a woman in his past. Then Emily reminisce about how she had once loved with her whole soul and how it had nearly destroyed her, but I don't find it very believable that their letter exchange would have led to such a strong love that both would have been affected to such a degree. First crush? Yes. Regret and trauma? Yes. Passionate love? No. I mean, they never met in person and their letters not too personal (at least not to up to where I stopped reading); mostly gift exchanges and not very much about Fenn (as he is believed to be a forest fey).

If we look away from her supposed cleverness and ability to fool people into believing her a lady, Emily is quite likable, but in a fun, innocent way. Her pranks are childish and mischievous, and she feels more like a teen than an adult.

Okay, I'm gonna stop my rant here. I know I am being harsh, but I feel like have to explain myself since I don't usually give books two stars. Some of the problems might be addressed later in the book, I just don't have the patience or interest to find out.

This book did not land for me; the concept is good, but the execution is bad. However, if you are good at suspension of disbelief, then you might be able to enjoy it.

-I give 5 stars!⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~A pretty impostor. A devil of a duke. A dangerous game of deception...

“The only thing that really matters is love.”

-My friends, Lady Emily’s Matchmaking Mishap, is a deae story that completely surprised, and precisely wound its way into my heart. I wasn’t sure where this story would go but, oh my goodness, it was such a delight and is a story filled with such sweetness that I adored it. This dear clean, sweet and cheeky Regency romcom, will take you on a great adventure of the heart as you step delightfully into the world of Sofi Laporte’s Regency ton, where spinsters are merry, rakes are charming, and no one is quite who they seem. There are unexpected twists and turns that had my emotions all over the place but, in all the best ways. In fact, this delightfully charming story is richly filled with layers. As you read, the tender layers are pulled back, to reach the core, where such sweetness, content, belonging, healing, and love are so beautifully found and embraced. The tension filled banter, the swoony and tender moments, the secret looks, and the private meetings captivated me. The ending, so satisfying that I was gently moved to a few tears. I loved the journey with love finds its true way through hidden identities, forbidden love and the barrier of time that is emphasized so wonderfully in this sweet tale. This is a charming story that is worth the dear read!🙌🏻📚🩷

“You are not merely my world-you are my every hope, my every dream, the very air I breathe.”

Emily and Cecily lost their home and father on the same day, and have been living by their wits ever since - and they blame it all on the Duke of Wolferton. So when Emily suddenly learns that the duke is seeking a bride, she decides on the ultimate revenge: get him to marry her beautiful sister, and thereby regain their lost childhood home. But between mistaken identity, Cecily injuring her leg and the duke's determination not to be 'snared' by any fortune hunter, Emily's plans seem doomed. Worse, being so close to her childhood home is reminding her of both the best and worst parts of her childhood - both of which revolve around one person. As Emily's plans grow ever more tangled, can any good come out of this fateful visit?

A delightful read which held me enthralled from start to end. The interspersed letters are a great touch, and the growing romance is done beautifully. There's so much emotion between Emily and the duke, for better and worse(!), but the result is a long road to real understanding. With an interesting setting and background, characters I enjoyed getting to know, a beautiful clean romance, childhood letters and a message of forgiveness and reconciliation, this is a touching and heartwarming read. As for the final touch with Cecily - well, you'll have to read it! A great read and I'm looking forward to the next book already. Recommended.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

Oh my this book just captivated me right from the beginning. Sofi is a master at pulling you into the story. She has you going in one direction with the story then she catches you with an unexpected twist. I love her characters and their interaction.

Lady Emily Hepplewhite and her sister Cecily, have been forced to take care of each other since the death of their father. They have become imposters moving from family to family. None of them their own. Now Emily has decided to finally get even with the Duke of Wolferton. She blames him for the loss of their home and the death of her father. She has heard the rumors that he is going to his country home for a house party to choose a bride. She decides to get an invitation for her and her sister, so that she can get him to marry her sister and restore their home to them. Somehow Emily thinks the wrong man is the Duke and she gets off to a very bad start with his coachman who is actually the Duke. She does get her invitation and then the fun really begins when the Duke turns the tables on her knowing she is an imposter.

Throughout the book we get peaks from her past through letters that she remembers sending as a child to Fenn. Those letters will be a key to the story.

This is a book that I will definitely read again.

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

This was another delightful clean regency in the series "Merry Spinsters, Charming Rogues". As with the previous books, the plot involves some deception, some previous interaction between the couple and some misunderstanding.

The author wrote in a newsletter: "I wanted something light and charming, but also whimsically romantic. Most of all, I wanted to feel the heartbreaking love between [the protagonist couple]". In my view, she's achieved her goals. I had a smile on my face almost constantly, I enjoyed the dialogues with banter as well as the really sweet epistolary relationship and I found the romance endearing.

At some point the historical accuracy regarding social interactions (for instance, kissing or other PDAs) was a bit lax. The plausibility of some aspects of the plot was also a bit thin. But I didn't mind it much. The overall atmosphere was right and these more unrealistic aspects of the story didn't deter me from enjoying the book very much. Why wasn't this a 5-star read then? Because at some points there were some inconsistencies, mainly about who knows what when, and I was a bit baffled. I suppose the story and the deceptions were so convoluted that it was difficult for the author to keep track of it all and to disentangle everything in the end. But, as a reader I was a bit confused by it all.

Lady Emily’s Matchmaking Mishap by Sofi Laporte will make you dizzy from all of the twists and turns the author cooks up.

** I would like to express my thanks to ☆ Sofi Laporte ☆ for providing me this ARC in exchange for an honest review **

I have been on a break from regency books, and Sofi Laporte made me fall in love again with regency. This author really has a way of blindsiding you and I love it. While reading I was 100% sure of one fact and then she threw a curveball straight to the face and I second guessed everything. Then a bus comes and drops on you with another twist and I triple guessed everything. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I seriously gasped out loud at so many places. When I finished this book, I just thought, Sofi Laporte did it again.

The book was a dual POV between the main characters, with written letters in between. With each chapter we get to see more and more of the characters’ backstories, I seriously couldn't stop. The tension filled banter, the secret looks, and the private meetings gripped me. I JUST LOVED IT. And also? How many identities can one have?

Do you want a wonderful regency romance book that will have you reeling from shock? This is the one for you! Can’t wait for the next one!

Emily and her sister Cissy are imposters. Ever since the tragic death of their father, they have been deceiving their way through society, pretending to be relatives of rich, aged women so that they have a place to live. But when fortune turns, Emily determines that they will return to the home they grew up in and trick the “Devil Duke” into marrying the beautiful Cissy so that they can claim their beloved cottage on his estate.

When Emily runs into the Duke’s coachman at an inn, however, he discovers that Emily is not the lady she’s pretending to be. She reveals her plans to him, only to discover that he is not as trustworthy as she’d hoped. Secrets abound. Masks conceal true identities. And the fate of both Emily and her sister hang in the balance as Emily must discover whether she can love again after having her heart broken so long ago.

This Regency romance captured my interest immediately. The frame story of letters exchanged between Emily and a fay spirit of the woods was utterly charming. The misunderstandings between the two lovers were predictable, but so poignant to read about. I started this book much too late in the evening and had to stay up much too late to finish it. Recommended.

Two sisters imperiled. Two lovers separated. Shrouded identities, fairy folk, despicable villains and desperate maidens. Sofi Laporte’s romp through Regency England has this and more.

This charming tale, told in part in an epistolary exchange, wraps its way around your heart. We get to root for yet another charming heroine among Ms. Laporte’s creations.

The cast of characters is expanded by a triplet of aunts, who unlike the witches in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, serve as comic relief in a sometime dark tale. I can’t get enough of these ladies. I hold out hope they and their quips show up in future tales.

The ill fated lovers: will they, won’t they get together? You must read the story, which like any fine romance of hers, replete with witty conversations and charming personalities, keeps one on the edge of one’s seat. Ms. Laporte gives us an engaging story to wile away the winter hours.

This one, in my humble opinion, bears a Georgette Heyer stamp of approval. Feel free to disagree with me, but do read it first.
