What an impressive debut! This book is often compared to The Discovery of Witches, but what it most reminded me of was The Heartless Hunter. The slow burn chemistry between Kyan and Nicole was perfectly executed and I loved the added tension that was created by her concealed identity and his status as the Wake’s best hunter. There were a few slow spots in the plot, but overall, I thought this was a beautifully written book. This series has so much potential!
The main reason this wasn’t a five star read for me is that I still don’t feel like I have a clear understanding of what an Empyreal is. It is made very clear that they transform, but I don’t feel like the author clearly described what exactly they transform into… I am pretty confident that they are humanoid and it is clearly stated that they are NOT Vampires even though they do drink blood. Perhaps they are something like the Atlantians from the Blood and Ash series? Whatever the case may be, I was left feeling like I needed a visual aid, so the author missed the mark a bit in that regard.
I was also a little bothered that the MMC was supposedly over a hundred years old and never questioned the Wake’s intentions. It shouldn’t be rocket science that it is unwise to follow any leader or organization blindly, especially one that regularly tasks you with hunting down and killing people. For the most part I really liked his character, but I can’t fully get behind anyone who would kill without question or remorse in this way. I understand that they can only transform when someone has malicious intent towards them which was another reason he never questioned the Wake or the missions they tasked him with, but I thought this was a pretty flimsy explanation after so many years in their service.
Reading this was a very immersive experience and the dark academia vibes often made me feel that this was set in the distant past rather than present day England. It was a little jarring when something modern like Edward Cullen or sunglasses were mentioned. Maybe you could argue that this is another weak point in the overall execution, but I enjoyed the ambiance the author created enough not to mind. I think the atmosphere she evokes will be a big hit with readers. I am expecting big this from this author! Can’t wait to see what she is able to produce after she has a few more books under her belt! 👏🏻👏🏻

Pre-read: The description sounded so good right up until they compared it to Serpent and Dove and A Discovery of Witches. Both were 3 star books for me and I didn’t feel compelled to finish either series. Hopefully this one holds my interest - only one way to find out! 🖤

god that was absolutely stunning of a story I AM IN LOVE. I dont even know what to say, it feels like this book was made for my tastes because truly all of my favourite elements of a book were in this and I adored every single second of it, and this is only a debut novel?? absolutely insane because reading this I wouldve never thought it was.
first, LET ME JUST SCREAM ABOUT THE CHARACTERS HELLO?? I AM SO ATTACHED TO THEM ALL AND IF THE AUTHOR KILLS A SINGLE ONE OF THEM IN FUTURE BOOKS I WILL BREAK DOWN AND CEASE TO EXIST. I genuinely love them all so much, nicole is an absolute QUEEN I adore her, not only is she smart, strong and quite logical but she is messy, has her fears, and makes mistakes but most of all her protectiveness over her family struck me in the heart so deeply--there is no better love than familial love truly and especially in fantasy novels where it's so rarely seen?? I was eating up every scene with her family theyre so sweet and wholesome it made me want to melt into a puddle, their interactions between each other, the jokes, the protectiveness they each have for one another!!! I love them so much!!! AND NICOLE IS THE MIDDLE CHILD OF THE FAMILY LETS GO MIDDLE CHILDREN!!! (also we're the same age hehe) I kid you not it's always the oldest or youngest that are MCS, so seeing nicole being the middle child made me unreasonably happy LOL it was a refreshing POV as well knowing that she had her older brother for her and at the same time her little sister, and of course her father who is so calm and the sweetest (he calls them all "love" I just-) and is btw almost 1000 years old which truly was funny and cool to me and the absolute best part--theyre a family of supernaturals! (now as for *what* exactly they are.. well you'll have to read and find out) it definitely made even more interesting dynamics (and can I get a house like theirs?? it sounds so fun and cozy I mean I also want some secret hidden rooms!!) also the way they werent completely in the dark with nicole's investigation in the painting and still were in the loop on her progress was also really nice. I love seeing happy, wholesome families.
oops I went on a bit of tangent but honestly it should go to show how much I fell in love with them <3 my new favorite fictional family that must be protected at all costs!! and theres remi (nicole's best friend) who is basically family and I loved the scenes we had of their friendship omg
and then kyan AKA NEW LOML, okay so this is marketed as "forbidden romance" (which i ate up, like the angst???) but also there's a hint of "enemies to lovers" in a way but it's done in such a funny way tbh the first half I was just laughing honestly, you have nicole who treats kyan so distrustfully (with reason), giving glares to him and meanwhile kyan is over here so confused and doesnt want her hating him and it was absolutely hilarious LOL he reminded me of a sad puppy, so really rather than being called enemies to lovers it's more of a "one sided" enemies to lovers but truly nicole and kyan's chemistry was everything, I fell so in love with them. AND WE GET BOTH OF THEIR POVS THROUGHOUT THE BOOK AHHHH dual povs >>>>
i am such a sucker for the love interest noticing the tiny stuff about a MC and here it was no different. the little smiles, the gasps of excitement she gets looking at pieces of art, her blushes, the look of awe in her eyes YES that's kyan noticing it all and getting unreasonably happy seeing it all--especially when those smiles and laughter are directed at him ALSO KYAN COOKING, THE HUGS, AND THE FOREHEAD KISSES DJGDJSHS THE DIMPLES??? BRAIN CANNOT COMPUTE IM WEAK I LOVE HIM YOUR HONOR kyan smiling and laughing the softening in his eyes?? the way I swooned omg I was so with nicole in those moments. i was literally grinning like a fool reading their interactions, the absolute hold these two have on me??? miss megan scott KNEW what she was doing creating these two.
oh oh and did I mention he called her "my love" in irish🫠 yes as you can see I'm a total goner for kyan <3 plz don't hurt my children I beg you.
okay this review is more of me fangirling about the characters (rightfully so as characters are everything and I love them) but the world itself!! I am completely enamored with it, and love love everything about it and the way art plays such a huge role in the supernatural world. like the way paintings would have secrets concealed within them!! and the plot?? always was at the edge of my seat with the investigation and the villain genuinely scared me that they'd do something extremely reckless i feared for some characters' lives😭 but also the amount of different supernatural creatures?? it is just SO interesting and I'm so eager to learn more I cannot wait for book 2. the magic of the world especially is just so lovely to learn about and the powers each creature has!! and theres so much mystery behind *certain* creatures and I'm so excited for it, ah the wait is going to be torture wanting more and I did this to myself😂 thankfully we were saved from a brutal cliffhanger at least which i was so fearful of so thank you megan for saving me from pain (for now, at least. I dont trust you to do that in book 2 with my long history of sequels destroying my soul) (yes i have trust issues)
anyways y'all GO READ TTOM IT IS MY NEW FAVOURITE OBSESSION. And a certain book box is supposedly making a special edition of this (so well deserved) and I am SO SO hyped because i just know it will be beautiful as this story was🥹

The novel had all the promising elements I usually enjoy, such as dark academia, a school setting, and forbidden romance in a supernatural world. However, despite its intriguing premise, the execution and writing left much to be desired.
From the outset, I struggled to fully immerse myself in the story. The characters and dialogue felt like they were plucked straight from the early 2008 era of books, which made the narrative feel dated and out of touch. The logic of certain scenes and the behaviors of the characters were often baffling and inconsistent, making it difficult to connect with or care about their character.
There were moments where I found myself putting the book down for days at a time, struggling to muster the enthusiasm to pick it back up. The story had potential, but the lack of coherence and the dated character portrayals significantly hindered my enjoyment.
Overall, while I appreciate the opportunity to read and review this book, it ultimately did not meet my expectations.

⋆ The Lore of this world was absolutely meticulous. There’s secret messages hidden in the classical masterpieces of our world today, and as a result i was able to look up the artworks to match the mood of The Temptation of Magic.
⋆ The romance aspects were honestly everything I look for. It was steamy and there was some serious yearning going on. The ending left me screaming for certain reasons, in the best way, and i’m dying to know what happens next. I’m also hoping other (non main/pov) character’s romantic relationships blossom in the next books because i found myself wanting to do a bit of matchmaking.
⋆ The mythology tie ins were absolutely an unmatched level of dedication. The amount of research and planning necessary to make all of the pieces fall in line as they have must have been years in the making. The things I would do for a physical copy of this ARC to annotate …. 🧎🏼♀️
⋆ Every character felt like a fully developed person who exists in and out of this book. Every choice, felt genuinely motivated by the character and not a hollow means to move the plot for. When the characters were nervous … i was nervous. This is one of those books that you feel their pain and joy as a reader. I will read any book Megan Scott writes.

⋆ The Lore of this world was absolutely meticulous. There’s secret messages hidden in the classical masterpieces of our world today, and as a result i was able to look up the artworks to match the mood of The Temptation of Magic.
⋆ The romance aspects were honestly everything I look for. It was steamy and there was some serious yearning going on. The ending left me screaming for certain reasons, in the best way, and i’m dying to know what happens next. I’m also hoping other (non main/pov) character’s romantic relationships blossom in the next books because i found myself wanting to do a bit of matchmaking.
⋆ The mythology tie ins were absolutely an unmatched level of dedication. The amount of research and planning necessary to make all of the pieces fall in line as they have must have been years in the making. The things I would do for a physical copy of this ARC to annotate …. 🧎🏼♀️
⋆ Every character felt like a fully developed person who exists in and out of this book. Every choice, felt genuinely motivated by the character and not a hollow means to move the plot for. The one with the plot that doesn’t necessarily grab your attention like the others, the one that doesn’t completely click. But you really like the characters, and the interactions, and the overall vibe, so you don’t care about it. You keep going, cause despite everything, you’re simply vibing

Boring. This took me forever to read. After reading 100 pages, I set it to the side for a couple weeks because I was just not into it. I found the romance and the mystery unappealing. Nothing engaged me and I’m glad it’s over.

I really tried - in fact, i was already halfway through listening to it when i decided to start all over again because i was thinking, it cant be like this.
While it has a catchy start, it drags out in the middle and kind of picks up again in the last 20%.

It took me a while to get into it as I didn't really vibe with the writing style, but I did appreciate the moments between Kyan and Nicole. The romance sort of worked for me, but the pacing felt too rushed.
I was really often distracted by how difficult this book felt to read for me and I can't quite pinpoint what was responsible. 😂 A lot of the dialogue felt kind of wonky to me and I feel like this lacked the atmospheric vibes I was hoping for, but it really could've been my mood. I think there were nice ideas, but execution could have been a lot better.
Still a pretty decent YA though!

Can I say that I loved EVERYTHING?? Megan Scott’s debut was truly amazing! The plot was delicious and was keeping me on my toes throughout the book. I loved the writing style A LOT!! But also the setting and the world building… chef’s kiss!!!
I loved the whole cast of characters and the MCs Kyan and Nicole are very different, but they became such a great team together. Their banter was top tier, and the sparks were real. I can’t wait to see how their romance progresses in the next books!
I also really liked the overall vibes! I felt like I was reading an old school paranormal romance combined with vibes from Da Vinci Code and a Study in Drowning!! And the fact that the book revolves around art and mythology in an academic context was an added value!

3.5 rounded up! I loved a lot of things about this, the atmosphere (so fall, spooky and cozy!!) the magic system (incredibly unique - magical art! magical creatures ), the plot (mysterious and kept me guessing), the characters (friendships, family dynamic were really fun).
Where it felt lacking was the romance IMO and also the characters’ stupidity lol. They were way too naive and missing really obvious clues. The romance felt like there just wasn’t much tension??? It was very insta-lust and towards the end it was interesting but for most of the book the MC interactions felt very meh??
I’ll elaborate more later but overall had fun with this and am excited to see where the rest of the series goes!

Écoutez, je peux pas dire que j’ai pas aimé… mais je peux pas dire que j’ai aimé non plus. C’est hyper bizarre, genre j’ai trouvé l’univers intéressant et l’histoire pleine de potentiel mais tout était à la fois bien trop lent (l’intrigue) et bien trop rapide (la relation entre les personnages), l’enchaînement des événements était parfois un peu wtf, la construction est assez spéciale (info dumping à gogo)… bref c’était pas une MAUVAISE lecture mais je suis ressortie en mode « mwouaiiiiis » et je sais pas trop si je lirai la suite si c’est pour avoir de nouveau 600 pages où ça traine… 🫣

I am absolutely obsessed with this book!!! It offers a bit of everything: dark academia, romance, mystery, fantasy creatures. Nicole was a very relatable and her strength was shown subtly throughout the book which i absolutely loved. Kyan is my newest book bf and he deserves the world. i fell in love with every single character (even the actual antagonist 👀). they’re all searching to belong in different ways and i just found that so beautiful and realistic. the celtic mythology was an aspect of the book that i wasn’t expecting and really enjoyed!! the tension was SO GOOD and i need more pleaseeeee. overall the plot was great, there were some predictable aspects but the overall mystery kept me intrigued the entire time and i am SO curious as to where the story will go from here. i need book 2 ASAP!! will be recommending to everyone i know. ok byeeee gtg make this book my entire personality

Honestly, I should've DNF a lot sooner but the dark academia and art history major plot points were so well done that I tried harder than I usually do.
Anyway, this reminded me too much of Twilight and I just couldn't. The Wake was giving Volturi. There were legit quotes like "What are you?" and "How old are you?" and bonus! "Can’t you just drink from an animal like Edward Cullen?"
Other than the Twilight vibes, this was a typical romantasy. You've got:
✔️ Insta lust
✔️ Fated mates
✔️ A tall, dark-haired, muscular, brooding 2000 year old love interest and an FMC in university
✔️ A bad guy tormenting our fated MCs and gives a villain speech around the 75% mark where I stopped reading
The explanation for the author's new supernaturals, the Empyreals, was weirdly drawn out but yet slightly confusing to understand.
If you're into Twilight-esque books, then you might like this one. I'm getting too old for this.

The Temptation of Magic war ein wirklich schwieriges Buch. Schwierig im Sinne von langweilig und langatmig und on top sehr wirr was das Magiesystem anging. Hätte ich nicht die Fairyloot Ausgabe, dann wäre mir sicherlich dieses Buch entgangen, was überhaupt kein Verlust für mich wäre. Meine Erwartungen waren nicht wirklich hoch, dennoch war ich wirklich gespannt, denn der Klappentext hat sich grundsätzlich interessant angehört. Auch die Tiktoks die ein tolles Romantasy in einem Dark Academia Setting versprachen, weckten mein Interesse. Dark Academia haben wir erhalten. Nur geht der Plot hier so langsam voran und von Romance sind wir auch noch so weit entfernt. Obwohl ich mir vorstellen kann, dass es ggf. wirklich noch gut werden könnte, kann ich hier einfach nicht mehr weiterlesen. Seit 2 Wochen quäle ich mich hier durch jede einzelne Seite, im Wechsel mit dem Audiobook, welches mich auch nicht sonderlich weit brachte – mich im Gegenteil eher jedes Mal einschliefen ließ 🙃 Werde meine Ausgabe nun verkaufen und daher sicherlich nie wieder zu diesem Buch greifen. 1 Stern ist vllt etwas zu hart, aber die Leseflaute in das mich dieses Buch gebracht hat, besteht darauf.

It has potential. I think fans of romantasy can enjoy it quite a bit. Especially if you’re into a typical 6-feet tall overprotective growling male supernaturals with rock solid abs who speak in genre cliches.
It definitely reads like a first novel and I almost wish the book spent more time in the oven. I appreciate all the work the author and the team have put into getting this book to us, readers, but the copy I’ve read (FairyLoot exclusive edition) has an annoying number of typos.
The beginning creates a dark academia English college atmosphere laced with arts history and gives Dan Brown vibes. In the second act though the mysterious riddle moves to the background and we concentrate more on the relationship between an 18-year old FMC Nicole and a centuries-old Kyan and their conflict with a Spectre called Lynch. The cheesy romantic relationship had me rolling my eyes almost every page.
Overall, I found it difficult to read for an YA novel and unbalanced between fantasy and romance. I felt that characters are out of place and don’t fit organically into their environment, art history element is boring , cipher mystery is lacking details

Yeah … I don’t even know where to begin here.
I’m so sad because I’ve been looking forward to this book coming out for so long now. For a book that’s supposed to have this super unique setting — a seaside magic academy with a storyline revolving around art history (!!) —- there was zero time spent building this atmosphere. We’d jump right into a scene without any supporting build-up, which made the entire story feel lacking and half-baked. The magic system was disappointing. I was so lost trying to grasp the Emperyal concept, yet the entire book felt so info-dumpy so I’m not even sure how that was possible.
Don’t even get me started on the instalove story. I can sense the author wanted to hark on nostalgic Teen Wolf/Twilight dialogue, (they literally reference Edward Cullen and it was so jarring I don’t know why he exists in this universe) but in 2024 it felt so dated and cringey and could have been achieved in a much better way. The whole book felt juvenile and took itself too seriously, and the length was not justified whatsoever.
I’m disappointed. It could have been the case that this book just wasn’t for me, but overall I feel like this definitely suffers from debut-book syndrome and could have been better with more efficient editing. The grammatical errors alone were glaringly obvious. I hate that this didn’t live up to expectations.

Sometimes, a book is just boring. Or it’s written boring. Or it’s just too similar to other things. I can’t pinpoint the “why” behind my lack of interest / sheer boredom, but after weeks of trying to read this I have to admit defeat. There are other stories out there waiting for me that won’t be as big of a slog as this book.

Je suis agréablement surprise ! Dès le début, le livre m’a captivée ! J’ai beaucoup aimé ce mélange entre l’art, la vibe dark academia et le surnaturel. L’univers que l’auteure a créé était vraiment intéressant, nouveau et unique. N’étant pas fan de Darkacademia, pour le coup j’ai été très conquise !
L’ambiance de ce livre est tout simplement impeccable ! Les descriptions m’ont véritablement donné envie de marcher à travers ces galeries d’arts, ces bibliothèques sombres, ces rues pavimenteuses sous la pluie mais aussi de m’installer dans un café et de dessiner ou encore de me balader sur la côte anglaise !
L’auteure nous présente un monde surnaturel peuplé de créatures familières tout en y introduisant d’autres qu’elle a inventé avec leurs propres caractéristiques ajoutant ainsi une touche d’originalité. Ce qui donne également son unicité à ce livre, c’est l’art et sa particularité rendant cette histoire très intrigante dès le départ.
L’intrigue était vraiment prenante ! Une organisation gouvernant le monde surnaturel, des enquêtes autour de l’art et des secrets cachés rendant ce livre captivant et mystérieux. Et comment vous dire qu’il s’est passé des choses que je ne suis pas prête d’oublier de sitôt ! C’était vraiment incroyable ! Lorsque j’ai ouvert ce livre, je ne m’attendais pas à tomber sur ce genre de retournements de situation et d’intrigue.
L’auteure nous présente également des personnages vraiment attachants. Je les ai tous aimé et ce dès le départ ! Même ceux qu’on est censés détester ont su se montrer intéressants et surprenants.
Il y a un gros côté familial dans ce livre et c’était tout bonnement touchant, ça faisait chaud au cœur ! Pour une fois que la famille n’est pas mise de côté ! Ils se protègent les uns les autres et collaborent ensemble. Ce travail d’équipe ajoute tellement quelque chose à l’histoire ! Leurs interactions étaient vraiment trop mignonnes. J’avais qu’une envie, c’était de plonger dans le livre et d’être avec eux !
La relation entre les deux protagonistes principaux était également géniale. On est sur une romance interdite accompagnée d’une proximité forcée. Je trouve ça juste dommage qu’elle soit principalement basée sur une attirance physique. Cependant, leur relation s’est développée et a fait place à une romance des plus adorables ! Je les aime trop et leurs interactions m’ont tout simplement fait fondre.
Pour son premier livre, l’auteure a vraiment géré et a su créer un concept original et intriguant ! J’attends bien évidemment la suite avec impatiente.

Les descriptions m’ont véritablement donné envie de marcher à travers ces galeries d’arts, ces bibliothèques sombres, ces rues pavimenteuses sous la pluie mais aussi de m’installer dans un café et de dessiner ou encore de me balader sur la côte anglaise !
L’auteure nous présente un monde surnaturel peuplé de créatures familières tout en y introduisant d’autres qu’elle a inventé avec leurs propres caractéristiques ajoutant ainsi une touche d’originalité. Ce qui donne également son unicité à ce livre, c’est l’art et sa particularité rendant cette histoire très intrigante dès le départ.
L’intrigue était vraiment prenante ! Une organisation gouvernant le monde surnaturel, des enquêtes autour de l’art et des secrets cachés rendant ce livre captivant et mystérieux. Et comment vous dire qu’il s’est passé des choses que je ne suis pas prête d’oublier de sitôt ! C’était vraiment incroyable ! Lorsque j’ai ouvert ce livre, je ne m’attendais pas à tomber sur ce genre de retournements de situation et d’intrigue.
L’auteure nous présente également des personnages vraiment attachants. Je les ai tous aimé et ce dès le départ ! Même ceux qu’on est censés détester ont su se montrer intéressants et surprenants.
Il y a un gros côté familial dans ce livre et c’était tout bonnement touchant, ça faisait chaud au cœur ! Pour une fois que la famille n’est pas mise de côté ! Ils se protègent les uns les autres et collaborent ensemble. Ce travail d’équipe ajoute tellement quelque chose à l’histoire ! Leurs interactions étaient vraiment trop mignonnes. J’avais qu’une envie, c’était de plonger dans le livre et d’être avec eux !
La relation entre les deux protagonistes principaux était également géniale. On est sur une romance interdite accompagnée d’une proximité forcée. Je trouve ça juste dommage qu’elle soit principalement basée sur une attirance physique. Cependant, leur relation s’est développée et a fait place à une romance des plus adorables ! Je les aime trop et leurs interactions m’ont tout simplement fait fondre.
Pour son premier livre, l’auteure a vraiment géré et a su créer un concept original et intriguant ! J’attends bien évidemment la suite avec impatiente.

I went into this book with pretty low expectations - I hadn't seen much about it and was mostly interested in it since it is a book box pick, and on top of that, I've been in the worst slump of my life and hadn't finished a book in over a month.
Well, I was very pleasantly surprised because I ended up loving it!
Even though I usually don't enjoy urban fantasy, I liked this setting because it felt mystical, and the way that modern life and technology was woven into the story just worked for me.
The atmosphere and writing were great, I felt truly immersed into the story and setting.
I also always love a world that has many different mythical beings, and this one was brimming with them without feeling convoluted!
The plot and story progression were great, it kept building very nicely and did a great job at setting the series up.
I like that we had a rather "small" villain, while it was also clear that the "big" villain organization was looming in the background and would become a problem later on.
The way art was woven into the plot was so cool, I haven't really read anything like it! It gave me a bit of Dan Brown vibes, whose books I have always loved!
I also really loved the romance, though it got quite spicy at the end which is why I think the book should be classified as NA rather than YA.
The romance came with some tropes but I felt like they were pulled off nicely and weren't just there for the sake of checking boxes.
Overall, I truly loved this book and I'm very glad it ended up breaking my slump!

Was thrilled and thankful to HarperCollins UK and HarperFiction for approving me to read this arc!
Overall: 4 stars
Pros:
-Love the art focus!
-The world that was created and the magic system with in it.
-Greyness was explored, rather than being just about clear wrong or right.
-The slow burn relation between main leads. -The language the author used was beautiful and yet not overly flowery either.
-The POV from both male and female characters. This is starting to become a trend (crimson moth, divine rivals)
Con:
-Was a bit slow in the middle. -Structure felt a bit off as the climax came a bit sooner and the action dropped off and lingered.
I read this is going to be a series and I can say that I will be reading the next installment for sure!

4.25⭐️ This book is perfect to read during the cooler months of Fall. I really enjoyed this book. The setting, the plot, the forbidden romance. Hunter and prey. Secrets. Mystery. I will be eagerly waiting for the second book! This is an urban paranormal fantasy. There’s a lot of references to art and supernatural creatures.

oh my god, this book was so, so good! it has a ton of interesting and unique elements, from the complex fantastical setting to the way art and history are woven into the story.
what immediately drew me in was the concept of Empyreals and how it related to a vast multitude of commonly-known supernatural creatures. I think I could compare Empyreals to Shadowhunters in terms of their protective nature, however Megan Scott managed to create a whole new world where things aren’t so black and white. I particularly loved how the characters’ sense of right shifted as the story progressed.
another stunning aspect was the art! here, history is painted, and also manipulated, through art, which I think was one of the story’s most compelling devices. there’s nothing like a famous painting that conceals secrets within!
while I was fascinated by the book, I did think it dragged on a bit towards the end - it was odd that the eagerly-anticipated climax took place at around 80% of the story, followed by quite a bit of talking and walking/standing around. however, the ending moments were awesome and I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel!

unfortunately, this book didn't work for me. It felt more like a pinterest page, filled with aesthetically pleasing images but lacking in substantial content or depth. while there were certain concepts that i found intriguing, such as the empyrals and their instinctual transformation into natural predators of other creatures, the idea that there are real paintings that show depictions of mythological beings, etc... the execution felt underwhelming. i struggled to connect with the characters, and the plot points weren't very clear to me. rather than feeling immersed in the story and its characters, I felt like i was navigating with the author on how to get from point A to point B. it doesn't help at all that this had the fated mates trope and I didn't know until about halfway through, because it just isn't something I typically enjoy reading about.
overall, I can see why this would work for other people, especially in the romantasy genre, but it wasn't for me.

i honestly loved this so so much! supernatural beings, dark powers, forbidden romance, hunter x hunted, forced proximity, fated mates all in an academic setting with elements of magical art history and irish mythology. I COULD GO ON 👏🏼. the chemistry and tension between the mmc & fmc had me giggling and kicking my feet, i’ve been off YA genre a bit recently but this being upper YA was absolutely PERFECT. so excited to see where this story goes! 4.25 ⭐️

I adored this book!!!
All the elements I love in a fantasy were there and I was completely hooked; I had a hard time putting it down and I still think about this book a lot!
What will you find in this novel?
✨ An atmosphere like A Study in Drowning. The novel is set in a small village in Cornwall, England, and I love this region! It is very conducive to a mysterious and dark ambiance, perfect for fans of dark/paranormal academia.
🖼️ Old-school paranormal romance vibes, like Shadow Hunter, with a plot revolving around a secret organization consisting of powerful immortal beings called 'Empyreals', who are hunters. Moreover, the originality of these beings is that they transform according to the prey they are hunting.
✨ The Da Vinci Code vibes with an investigation focused on artworks and their hidden secrets. The emphasis on art makes this novel unique; one has to decode paintings to reveal their hidden 'supernatural' messages.
🖼️ A cool group of protagonists, including a mermaid, hunters, and Seers. I really liked this group and am looking forward to seeing how each character develops further.

Supernatural upper YA fantasy with a good dose of romance and art history. I loved the unique concept and the cat/mouse chase. More steamy than I thought it was going to be!
I would of loved this more if there was more of the Empyreals and Empyreal powers explained. It wasn't clear what one really was which doesn't help when our main character is literally one of them.
I will be picking up book 2. I really liked the romance and think there's a lot of potential here!

This was so, so good. I legitimately had to let my feelings marinate for almost a full week before I could write a level-headed review.
Before picking this book up, I had just been completely shattered after riding a fanfiction high. If you read internet fiction, you know the feeling; you pick out your favorite characters from your favorite show or movie or *whatever* and some likeminded individual takes everything you ever wanted to see from them and puts it on paper, or really, some deep crevice on the internet, and that fic becomes your whole personality? Once you're done, you become a shell of a person. That's where I was. Empty, gutted, clinging to whatever endorphins were left swirling around in my little fanfiction-induced haze brain.
Then, I picked this up. It was my fairyloot book of the month. Those are usually 50/50 for me. I was expecting it to be alright, or even to be let down. All I needed was a bridge to fill the gap in my heart so I could keep reading. The Temptation of Magic would be a transient fix, something to keep me entertained as my mind reset itself.
Instead, it reset me.
Our main character here is Nicole, an unrealized Empyreal - a supreme predator among hidden supernaturals - who unravels the secrets left by her murdered mother through an ancient collection of classical paintings. These paintings not only hold the key to Nicole’s identity but are also vital for her family’s safety against the Wake, a sinister organization responsible for her mother’s death. When a rogue agent from the Wake steals the crucial painting, Nicole is forced into an alliance with Kyan, a fully-realized Empyreal, to get it back.
Scott’s narrative excels not only in its gripping plot and completely devourable prose, but also in its rich character development. There are no typical third-act miscommunications here. Instead, Scott chooses a path of understanding and cooperation, building on the themes of family and belonging already present throughout the rest of the book. Kyan and his best friend, Callum, have been a steadfast support system for one another throughout their immortal existence, while Nicole’s dedication to her family’s safety showcases her strength and determination. Even better, Nicole's family's dedication to her and one another shows in every one of their actions. Family loyalty, blood ties or no, is the heart and soul of this book.
The portrayal of found family in the narrative is particularly touching, offering a genuine and heartfelt exploration of relationships. This is especially true with how Nicole and Kyan's relationship evolves. Although they have a rocky start, the two meld together with a beautiful bond of mutual respect and gradual trust in their partnership, rather than building their relationship unnecessary drama. And once they do catch feelings for each other? They would absolutely kill for one other, and I would do the same for them.
In The Temptation of Magic, Megan Scott has woven a tale not just of magic and intrigue but of self-discovery, resilience, and the power of unity. This book doesn’t just fill the void left by other stories; it enriches the soul. This is everything that a fantasy novel should be.
