I used to live on the fringes, creeping through the shadows, however being incognito was no longer an option. We’d started a war and there was a price tag hanging over our heads. Our next move had to be swift and calculated or we could perish at the hands of The Firm. That was the plan until a phone call changed everything, planting me in a cult in the middle of Wyoming where I was reacquainted with a boy I knew from my past.
Only, Abel was no longer a kid. He’d grown into a man who’d uncoiled a well-tied knot I’d been guarding for years.
He.
Was.
Off.
Limits.
Those four words should deter me from placing him up front and center in my wildest fantasies. I could do that. I just needed to figure out a way how.
Author's The Cult is book two of Men in the Shadows series. There’s a major spoiler from The Reaper (Men in the Shadows Book One) in this book. Although each book has an HEA there’s an overarching story in this trilogy.
Like they are in literal life or death danger and have a full-on mission and they can't even think because their dicks are doing the most.
I wanted more plot, which we definitely got right at the end. I think mainly the pacing was off for me. I kept thinking to myself "Guys - stop fucking and focus" but in the end it all came together (and so did they). I would actually kill to see Archer and Tobias have a conversation after this book and Archer be like BRO WTF?!
Ahhh, I absolutely loved this! Tobias was in the first book as another assassin who was against The Firm, a huge assassins organization that has its dirty hands all over, and have had them kill innocent people that they didn't know about being innocent.
The Firm is evil, and are assassins are definitely not good, but they're not evil. They don't want to kill innocents.
Tobias, we learn has a very rough upbringing, where he was abused as a child and then lived on the streets until his early twenties.
We also learn he had a wife who was murdered - most likely by The Firm themselves, although he's never been able to prove it - pretty soon after they got married, and he's still grieving her in some ways about 10 years later.
But then there's Abel - his best friend Oliver's son, who he hasn't seen since Abel was a 9 year old kid. - and Abel is now 19, almost 20, stuck in this cult that is also evil (as all cults are).
His family went there about 10 years prior, pretty soon after Tobias had married his wife, because they were in dire straits financially and the leader promised to pay their debts if they came to the cult.
Oliver isn't an assassin, and never knew that Tobias was one. But he escaped the cult a few years previously and promised to come back and save his family.
But Tobias, a few weeks after the ending of the first book, is about to go somewhere with Archer and Heath to deal with more Firm shit, when he gets a call from Oliver in clear distress, and in danger, asking Tobias to save his family from the cult.
Tobias, with the help of Archer and Heath, infiltrates the cult, pretending to be a guard - there are many there - and there he sees and meets Abel again, as an adult.
Abel has had a crush on Tobias for years, ever since he was a kid. Obviously as a kid he just had an infatuation that kids tend to have, but it's different as an adult. He's completely smitten with Tobias.
Tobias was seemingly straight before re-meeting Abel, so his almost instant attraction to him throws him off guard.
But it's so intense and all consuming that it doesn't take too long for Tobias to give into his desire for Abel, who is on board from the get go - well, almost. He thinks Tobias wants to be there as a guard, on the side of the evil cult leader at first before Tobias can tell him he's there to save him and his mother and sister like his father asked him to.
Tobias, we come to learn, is really just a man who has been beaten down by the world constantly by the world since birth. He was an orphan, hoping for a family to adopt him, to love him. Then a family did, but they were abusive, then he lived on the streets, then he loved someone and she was murdered. The harsh reality of life has made him into someone who can kill. But he's a good man underneath all the pain and hurt and what life has made him become.
Abel has been through plenty of shit at the cult, but he has his family before that, he still has his mother and sister - and hopefully his dad, wherever he is - and he has friends, other boy sat the compound who have been through what he's been through, so he still has a lightness to him that Tobias has lost through so much suffering.
He's exactly what Tobias needs. And Abel needs someone like Tobias, big and strong and able to take care of him, protect him in a way he hasn't been in a long time.
These two has such great chemistry. I was hooked from the get go, and the story was so intriguing. And also there's more to the cult than meets the eye. This isn't just a pit stop to somewhere else before the plot gets back to taking down The Firm. They don't go away in this one.
There is an age gap, as Abel is 19 and Tobias seems to be 34 or so. Also there is daddy kink used (and Tobias is actually fairly dominant with Abel so it isn't just Abel saying "Daddy" and Tobias saying "boy" occasionally as some "daddy kink" books have done in the past) so if daddy kink isn't your thing, just be aware of that going in (or skip if you really don't like daddy kink).
I did give .5 stars off, but only because this takes place within like a week of time or so, it's a very short amount of time, and although I definitely believed the connection between them and them getting so serious so fast, Tobias was SO resistant to more for so much of this book, that the transition from that position to just kind of accepting the good thing in his life wasn't done the best. It just could been done better, in my opinion. Like I get the circumstances that kinda push him into that mindset, but I still would have liked more softening in him toward accepting the love he was starting to feel for Abel before he just kinda full on accepts in when he was still weary of doing that right before it. The first book kinda had this small problem, the "I love you's" perhaps coming a bit too soon.
Otherwise, though, I didn't have any other problems. The plot was well done, the characters well done, and the romance and chemistry was very well done.
I also have no idea who the next book will be about. There are some candidates, like Wolf or Abel's smaller friend in the compound, but I guess we'll see.
I can't wait for this whole group of rogue assassins to take down the evil Firm and get to leave HEA's with each other, without pain and danger chasing them wherever they go. They all deserve peaceful HEA's after all this shit.

I love this series , I love Garry’s writing, it’s unputdownable . I swallowed it. Not at all the world building I was expecting, even if it’s a standalone i recommend reading « The Reaper » first .. will help giving some background..
I wish I could jump into the book, peek through the window , or be the cleaning lady I don’t know .. but these guys are super hot ! 🥵 ALL of them . No exceptions..
Like always there was a ton of emotions , Tobias was a delicious broken book boyfriend …
That was another entertaining story from this series.
We know a few facts, the assassins want to bring down the Firm after they understand they also have to eliminate good people. The Firm has their tentacles deep into every corner of the society. You’ll never know who to trust, except a few. This story is about Tobias. He infiltrates into a community to save his best friend’s family. Abel is the son of Oliver, Tobias’ best friend.
There’s quite some story about Tobias' past, and all the connections between the characters Alternating between past and present we get to know the main characters and their circumstances.
Besides the mystery of missing people and the purpose of training young guys, there’s the story of the blooming relationship between Tobias and Abel.
Tobias likes to dominate and Abel likes to be dominated. Perfect fit right? Not, Tobias doesn’t let anyone near. The progress of the big storyline was a bit slow, but that was compensated by the last part of the story. Fasten your seat belts! And guess what, it's still not over!
This author never disappoints. This story had me on the edge from the beginning. This age gap story was packed with action and steamy scenes that you definitely have to see. I would definitely highly recommend it!
‼️⚠️This is book 2 you must read The Reaper [book 1] before reading this story.⚠️‼️
Left at an orphanage as a baby, with only rumors of how he got the or who his parents may be. He was left with no name, but you can't get adopted with no name, so the priest gave him the name Tobias, meaning the savior. Hard to be named something with such a great meaning when nothing great happens to you, Tobias only wanted a family, someone to love and care for him, but what he got was so very far from that. All he got was death and heartache, what few friends he had he kept them at arm's length or further because he never got to keep anything good, they always left in some way or another, normally never in a good way. But when one his oldest friends calls sounding desperate and in trouble, he drops everything he's doing to help his friend who may or may not have just used his very last breath to ask for the biggest favor of all.
Abel had a great life once upon a time ago, but that all changed the day they stepped foot onto The Creed's soil, his life was no longer his own. Forced to grow up, forced into a life he never asked for, but here he is fighting to stay alive, for his friends, and for his family. At the age of 18 Abel was forced from his home, from his family to start his training, for what none of the boys knew, they eat, sleep, and train every day. His day had finally come, his day to be taken to the restricted zone, no one knew what it was like over there, that was because no one usually came back to tell the tales. But Abel was about to find out for himself what truly happened in the restricted zone.
Plot:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
OMG.! This book was so good, I was either swooning over Tobias, or on the edge of my seat with worry for the pair as they plot their escape. Watching Toby discover he can have the things and the people he wants, seeing Abel be so young but written so mature is so refreshing. Garry as always you crushed it, and I cannot wait to see how the rest of this series goes but I don't know if I will ever be ready for it to end.
"The Cult" by Garry Michael is the second instalment in the Men in the Shadows series. After being captivated by the first book, "The Reaper," I eagerly anticipated the release of the second book, and it did not disappoint. Tobias has faced numerous challenges, constantly alert to the presence of death and sorrow in his life. A desperate call for help from a friend sets Tobias into action. Able was forced into a life of organised training at the age of 18, without ever having chosen it - a life dictated by a mysterious rationale: The Cult. As Tobias and Able encounter each other, a strong bond develops as they both grapple with their emotions. Tobias gains the trust of others while attempting to uncover The Cult's plans and devising an escape strategy before they realise what's happening. The plot is remarkably well-crafted and deeply intriguing.

I was expecting more from this since it’s the following to The Reaper….it was 80% porn and 20% plot…the plot obviously being little bits here and there and then at the very end.
I was so excited to read this but it could’ve been better! Oliver being dead was not a shock but a shock at the same time, he didn’t deserve to die and i do feel bad for his family.
Very interested in the wolf! i hope the next book is about him!
💕 Having absolutely loved The Reaper, I was more than excited to read this second book in Garry Michael’s new series. Archer and Health were back, which was a gift, but this story was all Tobias and Abel. What started out as a quick extraction turned into something so much bigger than expected.
I love Garry’s writing style. The characters have a back story that we get to peel off one layer at a time, until we see the whole picture. Even side characters have their own stories. And I absolutely love seeing depth in side characters. The thing is, these stories lend credibility to the side characters and are not just there as filler.
This story never has a dull moment. The mix of action, emotion and romance is perfect. The scenes flow one from the other, never dwelling too long in one aspect before moving to the next. The story has a happily ever after, but not everything ends perfectly wrapped up in a pretty little bow. There is loss and there is utter devastation too, because life doesn’t always turn out exactly as we want it to.
It was a long time coming but worth the wait and I can understand why the author took a while to release book 2. His writing as always is very good but the intricate plot line, the action, the nail biting on the edge of your seat scenes, not to mention all the hot spicy sex, his attention to detail, and there was no way this book could have been released soon after The Reaper.
The Reaper was such a good book and again with a very complicated plot line that I imagine drained his batteries and he needed time to formulate this follow up which he has done successfully.
The book picks up with the breakaway assassins hiding from the FIRM whilst plotting their strategies going forward. They put their plans on hold when Tobias, also known as The Savior, gets a call from his former best friend begging him to “get them out” before gunshots are heard and the call ends.
It appears his friend had taken his family into a cult and Tobias can only assume he wanted him to rescue them. With the help of Archer, The Reaper, and Heath, the Priest, yes they are in this book and still very much loved up, they formulate a plan.
There are lots of hair raising moments. The cult is ruled by a vicious man but there is a lot of underlying evil and secrets. Tobias is shocked when he finds Abel, his friends son, who is now 19 and no longer a child and he is ashamed of the lust he feels towards him.
There is no denying the connection between them leading to some very 🔥 scenes but lust soon turns to love.
All hell breaks loose, Tobias and Abel find their HEA but as with the first book there is evil to conquer and a FIRM to bring down. Bring it on!
The Cult is about Tobias, a man who has always lived in the shadows. A phone call from his best friend disrupts his life, placing him in the middle of a cult in Wyoming, where he reconnects with Abel, a boy from his past. Abel is no longer the child Tobias remembers. He has grown into a handsome man who stirs deep emotions in Tobias, despite being off-limits. The story is gripping. Full of danger, forbidden love, spice, and the struggle to survive in a hostile environment.
Tobias, an orphan, grows up with a name meaning “the savior,” a heavy burden for a man whose life blessed him with only pain and loss. His past makes him wary and guarded, yet he’s loyal to the ones he keeps close. Abel had a difficult but happy life. One day, he finds himself thrust into a cult where survival is a daily battle. Forced to grow up ahead of his time, Abel has matured beyond his years, and his life became a never ending fight not just for himself but for his friends and family. Their reunion challenges both men to face their pasts and futures, sparking a profound connection.
The story blends suspense, romance, lots and lots of swooning spice and action. It alternates between heart-pounding moments of danger and tender, steamy, sexy scenes between Tobias and Abel. The tension within the walls of the compound where they are captive and their effort to escape keeps you on the edge of your seat. I loved the climax with its intensity and cinematic action.
Garry Michael delivers a powerful story about Tobias’s dark past and Abel’s forced maturity. Their chemistry creates a dynamic and compelling relationship. The passion is palpable and adds heat to an already gripping storyline. This book is a must for fans of the series, like myself, and newcomers alike. I recommend reading “The Reaper” because the story is amazing, also it enhances the depth of the“ The Cult.” I can’t wait for the next installment. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
3.5 rounded up to 4 stars. I didn’t hate the premise and I’m looking forward to more in this series but there were just a few too many disconnects for me. First of all I couldn’t believe this super paranoid cult leader would just let Tobias in and tell everyone to give him what he wants right off the bat, without checking in on him at least once. This does kind of (maybe) get explained a little bit towards the end but it was nagging at me the entire time I couldn’t connect with Tobias, finding him too moody switching between his closed off persona and the constant questioning of what was happening between himself and Abel. I also didn’t buy into the insta-attraction to his best friends son or how many times he let himself take things further between them (often at the most inopportune times given they were supposed to be in a hurry or avoiding being discovered). I’ve read lots of books with moody MCs, insta-lust & gay-for-you/bi-awakening but for some reason, this time something just didn’t work for me which is a shame as I usually enjoy this author’s work.
I'm back to update my review. I read this months ago so my review may be lacking in details. Now with that being said ....I absolutely loved this book!!!
The two MC's, Tobias and Abel, were hot as h€ll. The sparks were flying way before there was any contact. These two were both what I'd call emotionally depleted in the beginning and then once they saw each other and felt the connection they had for each other and then the attraction and trust that came along with it ...it really saved them not just emotionally but they had to have that trust to make it through the ordeal they were in. Totally on the edge of my seat the whole time.
The suspense and action were top notch. The camaraderie between Abel and his friends as well as Tobias and the crew was heartfelt and amazing especially at the end when they all had to work together to get the bad guys.
I'm not sure what's going to be next for this series or if there is a next but I sure do hope so because this series is AMAZING!!
Highly recommend just make sure as always to read the content warnings especially if you have any triggers.
Tobias is a character you meet in The Reaper, but there was so much more to him than I ever expected.
Tobias has had a rough life before he found the Firm. The firm trained him to be ruthless in all aspects, and how to use his pain from his past as his strength.
When he discovers Oliver’s family needs help, he drops everything to help his best friend. Only to discover the Creed is more than he expected. The kid he thought he was rescuing is now a grown man.
Abel has spent his life in the Creed, he has grown up in the abuse of the cult. Training every day, being abused and broken over and over by the guards. Then he sees Tobias again and everything changes.
The two of them are so broken in different ways, Tobias from his past and all the secrets of the Firm, Abel by the Creed and every one in it who has always torn him down. Their connection from when Abel was younger is what pulls them together. Once Tobias gets past the fact Abel is no longer the kid he remembers, he allows himself to accept the feelings he’s starting to develop. Once they start up together and things between them progress, it was so sweet to watch them both grow and find the one person they can truly trust in each other.
The angst of waiting for everything to come to a head had me on the edge of my seat the entire book! When things finally came to a head, it was impossible to put the book down.
I’m so excited to see where this story goes from here, and who the next couple is!!
Oh, my emotions and heart are so full right now after reading this! Even though I have to admit, I was very leery about reading it (Garry knows exactly why, too). Needless to say, I was able to read the entire book WITHOUT even thinking twice before bam…the end credits rolled. Not once did my mind falter to uncharted territory, especially considering the stark contrast between. The emotional energy that comes along with this story was intense, causing constant goosebumps throughout with skin chills periodically.
Let’s take a moment to reflect on Abel and Tobias’ undeniable chemistry!! Super charged from initial eye contact, only intensifying repeatedly until they exploring together! Garry has a very fierce sense of intimacy and the ability to communicate these scenes to paper, allowing the reader to feel as if they were seated bedside during the show. His ability to convey such a descriptive imagery, leaving no shadow behind, is why I absolutely adore his style of writing! And the Firm, the Firm, the Firm…..your ending is near and we’re all here to witness your demise.
So excited to see where Garry takes this story next, especially with the new additions to the Resistance the choices are endless!! Maybe the Wolf??!!?! 🐺 Sucks we didn’t get to experience Oliver alive, though, but he will definitely continue living through his son and best friend.
The cult by Garry Michael is a non-stop, action-packed, high steam story that every lover of MM dark romance must read! I highly recommend reading The Reaper first which is book one in the series as you will get a chance to appreciate and fall in love with all the previous characters many of which appear or are mentioned in this book.
As always, Michael has a way of capturing the reader and carrying them on a journey into the dark and intriguing world of professionally trained assassins. Michael’s use of descriptions and flashbacks masterfully paints the reader with a picture of each character and gives us a glimpse into the mind and reasons behind the character's actions. No one creates imagery like Garry Michael.
Be warned, this is one book that you will want to start when you have a day or two free as you will want to binge read and will have difficulty stopping until the story is done.
Garry Michael is quickly proving to be a talented writer who is able to easily maneuver between MM romance and MM dark romances. I highly recommend this book and any others written by this very talented author.
Oh man, I’m obsessed with this series. It totally puts me on edge as there are enemies all over the place, especially given that Tobias inserts himself into a cult in order to save his best friend's family. I know he can handle himself, but damn the cult is not a peaceful loving one.
When he gets there and finds the son, Abel, now 19, and definitely no longer a kid! That man knows exactly what he wants. And he wants Tobias. He also wants to help protect the other members.
As they work together to sort out what the cult is up to and how to get out, they also develop an intense and deliciously dirty relationship. It’s hair-raising at times, but you’ll also cheer them on and find peace in the connection they create.
The action isn’t over yet, but their found family and allies are growing!
This was a great follow-up to The Reaper. Where The Reaper was all international intrigue and interweaving plots, this was a glimpse into the self-contained world of desperate people who get taken advantage of by narcissists. The Cult was less cult-y and more of a prison camp. I would have liked to see some elements of what makes a cult a cult explored here, such as why people follow a cult leader, for example. There’s no real explanation except they’re basically imprisoned. No one actually expresses a desire to be there or any overarching belief system that keeps them there, so I wasn’t completely sold on the cultiness of it all.
Nevertheless, there’s an element of suspense about the backstory of how people came to be there to begin with, and what’s up with some of the practices (like why the young men are being trained to fight). So, that’s interesting.
As for the love story…I was totally into it. Tobias is a tortured soul, and he has his reasons. Abel is the epitome of youthful optimism and eagerness. He’s exactly what Tobias needs. And these two are fucking hot together. Like 🔥
Overall, I would say the story dragged just a bit. But it’s worth the read if for no other reason than to see what happens with these two. They’re a great match even if the backdrop is a bit one dimensional.

I'm absolutely obsessed with this world and characters Garry Michael has created!!!
The Cult, Book 2 in the 'Men in the Shadows' series is about Tobias, a man who prefers to live in the shadows. However, one phone call and a request from an old friend to save his family from 'The Cult' brings Tobias to Abel. He once knew Abel as a young boy. But now.... Abel is a young and mature handsome man who has Abel feeling all the things. The forbidden and suspenseful journey these two took me on was addictive. The suspense was gripping and had me on edge, the spice was spicing, the action had me holding my breath, the tension is tense, the chemistry is palpable and the tender and sweet moments between these two had me melting.
This story and these characters had me utterly captivated from start to finish. Sometimes the reading journey was bumpy and hard but the ending was so worth it. With so many intriguing secondary characters, I'm just over here praying they all get stories.
"Nothing promising ever came my way. Hope was a mirage, hiding chaos and destruction."
I looked forward to this next installment of the Men In Shadows series after the intense ending of The Reaper. We get a glimpse of the crew in hiding, which I loved. I was curious about Tobias. The Cult led us on a wild ride with Tobias trying to find his best friends family. He infiltrates this extremist cult and immediately sees his best friends son Abel.
With the weight of knowing The Firm is still out to get all of them, Tobias is staying loyal to his friend, getting his family to safety. In the midst of the danger, Abel & Tobias become more. Besides the daddy vibes (bc that is just not my forte lol), they were hotttt
Really had high hopes for this book because I absolutely loved The Reaper, but this book feel flat for me. I feel like the plot had a lot of potential to be amazing but it was just under developed. Some parts needed more detail while other parts just felt like the same thing over and over again.
The lack of communication between Tobias and Abel just didn’t make any sense, it felt like them holding back on telling each other what they knew was just to make the book go on longer.
Usually I can look past a bad pet name but I absolutely hated how Tobias would call Abel “boy” during sex, it was so cringy. There was also some really cringy dialogue that I didn’t like when they were hooking up that just put me off.
I loved The Reaper, so I had to read The Cult. Tobias' story is packed with action, angst and a very spicy forbidden love story. I've rarely read a romance novel that is also a gripping thriller, but this book combines these two genres perfectly! I love Abel and how brave he and his friends are. Garry's design of the world in this book paints the dark gray mood in a heinous cult. The HEA was surprising and hard earned. I hope this is not the end of the series! I desperately need the downfall of the bad guys and love for Wolf! Highly recommend! Not suitable for readers under 18.
When Tobias is contacted by his once best friend Oliver to go save his family he does it no questions asked . With Archer and Reaper being his back up he enters The Creed a cult not knowing what to expect but he’s sure it isn’t to find love in Abel , Oliver’s son. With everything against them and the nefarious plans of Orcus the cult leader can Tobias save Abel and all the rest of the guys and their families. Was so excited to hear from Reaper and Heath again oh and Zero is awesome.
I was on the edge of my seat! Tobias is an assassin who gets a mysterious call from his best friend, begging him to save his family. His best friend has joined a cult in Wyoming. Tobias makes a plan to get inside, where he meets Able, his best friend's son. This book is action packed and steamy. My heart is still pounding.
Loved book 1. This one was okay. I think I just really dislike books with cults in them. It seemed like the main characters would pick the most anxiety inducing time to get it on. Overall, the arc-ing plot meshed well, but this one felt over the top. 🤷🏼♀️
Another great book. I litterally read this straight after reading book 1! I really enjoyed Tobias as a character. I could feel his feelings, his struggles, his pain; but also the way he cares for those he loves. This was an amazing read and I can not wait for the next book!!
