Of Seas and Tides #3

Trapped by Neverland

Rate this book
A desperate stowaway. A dashing pirate. Their quest to end Peter Pan’s reign of terror.

Wendy Darling has never been called rash. But when she discovers her cruel stepfather intends to separate Wendy from her brothers, she gives in to their wish to run away to Neverland. She’s rewarded in ways she’s never abundant beaches, a ready-made family of Lost Boys to mother, and her first taste of freedom. But Neverland is not all it seems.

The Lost Boys are going missing, and it looks like Peter Pan is to blame. When Wendy stumbles across Pan’s secret, he comes for her, too. She manages to evade him by hiding among a ship’s cargo but when the ship leaves port, Wendy finds herself stranded on the Jolly Roger, the most feared pirate vessel in Jocestrian waters. Worse, her brothers have been left behind.

Captain James Hook is as blackhearted as they come—and Pan’s sworn enemy. If anyone can defeat Wendy’s pursuer, it’s him. But something is strange aboard the Jolly Roger. Sure, Hook is as rude and high-handed as the stories say. But his crew treats him like the savior of the seven seas, not a notorious villain.

If Wendy wants to save her brothers, she’ll have to convince the devilishly (distractingly?) handsome pirate to return to the site of his greatest defeat and face their shared enemy. But Hook is convinced she’s a spy sent to foil his plans. As she works to convince him Wendy begins to realize not only is her life at stake, but so is her heart.

Trapped by Neverland is an enemies to lovers, no spice reimagining of Peter Pan, the third title in the Of Seas and Tides multi-author romantic fantasy series. These novellas can be read in any order and feature a villain who gets their happily ever after in a swoony, swashbuckling romance.

Peter Pan is the villain and Hook is the hero seems to be all the rage these days (not that there isn’t some merit to this argument if you read the original tale, but I digress) and this was a fairly entertaining version of that dynamic.

It took me waaayyy too long to get invested in the story on a meaningful level (almost halfway through) and the way it started—in the middle of the action then we’re backed up with an explanation of how we got there—I’ve discovered I’m not a fan of, or at least not the way it was executed here. It also takes a ridiculously long time for Wendy to stop sulking and actually talk to anyone besides herself, which made it hard for me to care about what was going on because I wanted character interaction here, people, not this girl being stuck inside her own head for hours upon hours!

And while the romance is fine, it’s also really bland and barely there which I found surprising as that’s the main feature being sold here plus I found it…weird. Now this is more my fault then the author’s but for some bizarre reason due to the vague description we got of Hook, I kept picturing him looking like, um, Jack Sparrow’s dad from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. 🫣 And I think Wendy’s an older teen or so (her age isn’t stated which wasn’t helping me any), so with being romantically involved with basically an old guy in my mind…er, yeah, this is totally my fault but the blasted image wouldn’t go away! 😬🫣 I guess I shouldn’t have read this so close to rewatching those movies but still…!!! *dies of embarrassment leaving her ghost to finish writing this review*

Ahem. ANYWAYS, I did like the crew’s interactions with each other and Wendy when she finally talked to them, though I was lost and confused with a lot of the worldbuilding which I think (???) is explained in more detail in this author’s main series, but don’t hold me to that because I have no clue.

I might be willing to try another book from this author but since I wasn’t wildly impressed with this one I might not, who knows. Pretty good, just not great.

(And maybe I should pay attention to what I read and watch near each other in the future to avoid uncomfortable comparisons…)

I enjoyed this Peter Pan novella! it jumps right into the action, and overall it's fairly fast-paced, especially at the end. But I enjoyed the writing and the humor, making it an enjoyable way to pass a couple hours.

Plus, who doesn't love a handsome, villainous Captain Hook? 😍

Reading this book was perfect timing for me as i was in need of a non-typical-for-me read when I stumbled upon this MAS and then found the ARC available

Captain Hook was alway the villain in pretend games between my best friend and I when we were children, so a story where he somehow becomes the hero was definitely intriguing to me despite me not really having any desire to read a Peter Pan retelling.

The fact that I tend to avoid Peter Pan retellings meant that this book really had tp impress to keep me hooked (pun intended) and it did! The back story to Pan as well as Hook and his crew was delightfully thought out while also remaining believable within the original story of Peter Pan

I was slightly disappointed in the lack of build up for the romance, but with Hook being a broody anti-hero, and the fight to the death just before, it makes sense. And there was plenty of banter, and moody sass from the FMC before and lots of wonderfully swoony Darcy-ish care from the MMC for her in ways that she didn’t notice while she was so busy keeping her opinion of him as a notorious pirate.

All in all, this book is certainly worth reading, and that cover?! GORGEOUS!

This fun and swashbuckling Peter Pan retelling was a blast to read!

Wendy and her brothers, John and Michael, have escaped the horrid plans of their father by whisking away to Neverland. The gorgeous beaches, the family of lost boys, and the mischievous leader Peter, is a dream come true to Wendy-that is until she discovers Peter Pan’s dark secret. Wendy escapes from Peter, who now sets out to kill her, and stows away on a ship heading out of Neverland. Her hiding place is discovered and Wendy finds that the captain of the ship is none other than James Hook, the villain of the story and a notorious pirate. The tides turn quickly, and our newly formed found family sets out to stop Peter Pan for good and to rescue Wendy’s brothers. Soon Wendy realizes that Hook isn’t the villain he is made out to be at all, and that her life, as well as her heart, just might by trapped both by Neverland and the handsome Captain James Hook.

This was such a fun story to read! I’ve never dived into Peter Pan retellings before and this one was so well done. I loved the banter between Captain Hook and Wendy, as well as the harmless scheming of the cat and the sheeries. Seeing Peter Pan as the villian, with a really dark past, and Hook as a morally grey somewhat of a hero but not a hero character, was a twist I didn’t know I needed!

I cannot wait to dive into the rest of this multi-author series, and I highly recommend this novella.

I love Peter Pan stories so naturally, I was drawn to Megan Charlie's Trapped by Neverland in which we are treated to the twisting tale where Peter is the villain. While I love a good Captain Hook is the hero story, I felt like the length of this novella worked against it in some ways, as while the story was good, I felt like there were a few holes here and there that never really got filled in.

We open the story with Wendy running from Peter Pan. She witnessed something horrifying with Peter at the helm and now she's running for her life. She hides upon a ship, hoping to get to land and bring in the authorities to handle the matter with Peter. And right away, I'm reeling! This is not your ordinary Neverland as it's apparently very accessible. There's no flying involved, although Peter does fly with pixie magic involved, but it really never got explained as to how Wendy, her brothers, and the other Lost Boys came to be on Neverland. Obviously Peter did something, but again, the answer was never made clear.

Wendy soon realizes her error in choosing a ship for refuge, for not only is she on a pirate ship, she's on Captain Hook's ship, Peter Pan's ultimate rival and nefarious villain. But Wendy soon realizes how wrong she was to believe Peter's stories about James as he's not at all the man she was led to believe he was. She now must convince James to help her rescue her brothers and the other Lost Boys and put a stop to Peter's dangerous antics once and for all, but luckily, getting revenge on Peter was always in Hook's plan.

I believe this novella was dubbed as a clean romance. There's no spice. And before your mind starts reeling about romance with Wendy and Hook, Wendy is a twenty year-old woman. Another thing that didn't really get explained...why did Peter bring an adult with him when he was bring her brothers to Neverland? Was it just the "mother" thing? I mean, really, as a kid, I thought you couldn't go to Neverland if you were around 13 or whatever, because you're on the cusp of adulthood and Neverland is for children who don't want to grow up. All those years of waiting by ground-floor window for nothing! Lol.

But yes, some of these inconsistencies of not getting an explanation was a bit befuddling. I mean, I get there not being a lot of time in a novella to make these changes known, but I had hoped for something. Like Wendy's age and the lack of flying for all and how Neverland is a known place and Peter was a known person...it was just befuddling. Like where was the magical fantasy element? Yes, it's there in a sense, but that magic of getting to Neverland is just not there and I feel like that took away a bit of Neverland's magic too.

Despite not having some clear answers, the story was still enjoyable. It's a short read, so having things condensed was expected. Like Wendy and Hook's whirlwind romance. They went from being wary of one another to be starcrossed lovers in the next chapter. I mean, again, I realize it's a novella, but just the quick turnaround of how quickly that went was enough to give me whiplash.

Since this is a novella, it ends on a high note and all is well. You can pretty much imagine how things will turn out given its fairy tale background. Charlie does lend an interesting take to her version of Neverland! I always love experiencing a new kind of Neverland, but I almost wonder if this story would've benefited more by being a full length novel, or even a longer novella. I feel like with those missing details and stretching out the romance a bit more this would have been even more phenomenal read! As it was, it was still a really good read and kept me entertained, but I was naturally left craving for more!

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series, but meant to be read as a stand-alone

– Megan Charlie’s Redacted series & Bound by Twilight occurs in the same world and this book, but you don’t need to read them to enjoy this one

– this is told from Wendy’s point of view

– it is mentioned that a character tries/tried to convince children to kill themselves in the name of the character & kills them themself at times they don’t without remorse (one scene slightly described & others alluded to)

Review:

Besides the messed up character mentioned in the last reader’s note (who we don’t really see much of, just hear stories of & a few of Wendy’s memories of), this was very enjoyable! This story felt like a slightly lighter mix of Mary Mecham’s Becoming Hook & Everly Haywood’s Pearls of Salt and Sacrifice. It’s definitely not the typical Peter Pan retelling, swaps who the villain of the story is, and has some fun high seas adventures. But Megan Charlie also put this story in her own world which added it’s own flare to the tale that was very interesting! I’m interested in reading more stories set in this world & to see if they have a similar issue in their knowledge of those around them & what their stories are!

Summary:

Wendy Darling escaped home to go to Neverland and thought she’d found a wonderful place. That is until the dream is crashed straight into a nightmare after she discovers a secret about Peter Pan that he doesn’t want getting out. Taking a chance to leave without Pan knowing, Wendy stows away on a ship docked in a hidden cove. Only when the ship leaves, Wendy finds herself regretting the decision. Because the ship is none other than the Jolly Roger, home to Pan & the Lost Boys’ greatest enemy – Captain Hook. All the stories say that Hook is blackhearted, but the longer Wendy is on his ship, the more she sees his crew treating him as if that’s not the case. While unexpected, this is gives Wendy hope that maybe he’ll be willing to help Wendy undo Pan’s secrets. She’ll just have to learn how to trust him over the stories first…

Trapped in Neverland is one of my favorite Peter Pan retellings. I love how even though there were some dark aspects, the story still managed to keep a lightness to it that kept the darkness from bogging me down.

I was glad that the story starts with Wendy fleeing the island, it gave a more original feel to the story.

The romance is sweet and stays clean, so big plus there.

World building and plot were both good and interesting.

Maybe two things that kept it from being a 5 star, but really didn’t take too much away from the story for me; using Wendy talking to the cat to explain what happened on the island, and at times the humor toed the line of leaving subtleness, to being too much humor for what was going on in the story. (But also my favorite type of humor in stories is the subtle kind, so this is more of a personal preference).

Content: clean, no spice, only some kisses, mentions of violence like throat slashing, but it didn’t get too descriptive, no swearing

I was able to read Trapped by Neverland and it’s a page turning short tale about a girl trying to save her brothers! I really enjoyed the twists to the classic tale of Peter Pan. Also, when I read the original novel after seeing all the Disney-fied variants, I was surprised at how not-so-good Peter was. So, I love it when authors let Peter be as villainous (or more) as he is in J. M. Barrie’s tale 👀 All in all, this was a great read!

Trapped by Neverland Includes:
🏴‍☠️ enemies to lovers
✨ Peter Pan retelling
🌊 stowaway
🪝 Hook gets the girl
✨ no spice romance
🏴‍☠️ villain/hero swap

Many thanks to the author & BOMM Tours for the eARC!

This one didn't quite live up to my expectations but to be fair my expectations were really high necuase Peter Pan is one of my favorite fairytales and just look at that gorgeous cover! I really enjoyed the banter between Hook and Wendy, the marooning scene (nice nod to the original), and the scene where Hook helps Wendy with her splinter. I would have liked clearer worldbuilding and more explanation of why Wendy was in Neverland and her instant attraction to Hook was a bit over the top. I also was hoping for a more original twist since I feel Peter being being villian is the most common one I see.

This was a really fun Peter Pan retelling. There was adventure, a little bit of enemies-to-lovers romance, and plenty of fun. Best of all, it was clean fun, which means that it's accessible to ages beyond just adults.

I'm now going to have go hunt down the related books to see what kind of work Wendy, James, and the others are doing when it comes to correcting the false Histories that the unnamed writer has been releasing. This short novella is definitely worth the time.

Loved it!

This was such a charming and entertaining book. I loved the twists and changes that were made! The story was clever, and for me, all of the changes improved the story of Peter Pan so much! 10/10 would recommend anyone to read it. It’s suitable for a teenager as well as a full grown adult of any age. It was romantic and entertaining without any explicit scenes making it appropriate for any reader.

Good story, felt short

I really enjoyed this story and the way it retells Peter Pan. It just felt rushed. There are several scenes that are skimmed over where I was puzzled about why they weren't fleshed out more; I'd rather have seen what happened play out than just be told something happened. This is especially noticeable for me with the romance. It's a "just kisses" story, and I felt like there wasn't much lead-up to the kisses in terms of romantic scenes or personal connections between Wendy and James. I do like the characters and plot; I just wanted more detail.

I really enjoyed this retelling on Peter Pan. I find it interesting that I have come across so many Peter Pan retellings lately and all have a different take on Hook and Peter. I liked the rapscallion merchant in this story, he was quite fun!
Basically, if you like retellings, I highly recommend this one. It's fun, it's witty, and it's not your average Peter Pan retelling.

i loved this right up until they kissed (literally out of nowhere) then started immediately being lovey dovey. I think this would've done amazing as a longer novel so there was more build up to the romance, and a more detailed plot. I did enjoy this though, it gave me major OUAT Pan and Killian Jones vibes 😍

Full of adventure and romance this Peter Pan retelling was a delight. I enjoyed the new roles of the characters and how the author incorporated other parts of the original fairy tale in a unique way.

The blurb sounded interesting, but unfortunately, the book wasn’t for me.

I was quite confused about what was happening and what the point of the plot was. I would have preferred more world-building instead of being 'thrown' into the action without an explanation of what was happening.

‘How dare he look so at ease on his own ship!’

This is a magnificent retelling of Peter Pan where he’s definitely the villain of the story and Captain Hook is a swashbuckling hero.

I always loved the Peter Pan movies growing up. I absolutely love the twists and turns of this retelling. Wendy is relatable and funny. She’s ready for anything as long as she’s not hungry. 🤣

The plot has such fun twists and turns, secrets, battles, and swoony moments. I love the twist on hero vs villain and Wendy’s family. The inclusion of Sheeries as Wendy’s sidekicks was a fun and entertaining addition. The banter and sassy moments between Wendy and James is perfection.

Which brings me to the characters, Wendy takes risks and will do anything to save her brothers. She strong, stubborn, hangry, and talks to herself. I loved watching her slowly revise her view of James as she saw him in action and interacted with him. James is grade A misunderstood handsome broody character.

I LOVE her chapter headings! They are all so fun and amusing. I wish more books had these! Example: “Which Involves Running, Sneaking, and Thinking Aloud”

Overall, wonderful read and perfect for teens and adults. So read it if you haven’t already!

There have been a few Peter Pan retellings twisted to make Pan the villain and Hook the hero lately and while this is not the greatest of them, it is an entertaining way to pass a couple of hours. I did find it a bit lacklustre in a few areas. The romance for example felt rather flat and lacking in emotion. For example, when the characters kiss for the first time it is described essentially as "he kissed her" and that's about it; no real build up, no description of the emotions or sensations involved. It is however a cute story with bits of banter and sass with most of the elements you'd expect to see in a Peter Pan retelling (except Tinkerbell, I think she's mentioned once, but never appears and her absence is never really explained) and extra elements such as a ship's cat that add some extra humour and magic.

I received an ARC and leave an honest review.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. It's the first book of the author's that I've read and I wouldn't mind reading more. This is book 3 in the Of Seas and Tides Series, which a multi-author standalone series. Trapped by Neverland is told through Wendy's third person pov and is a Peter Pan retelling full of adventure.

CW: mind control and pg-13 level violence
Spice: kisses that aren't steamy

Apparently this story is set in the same world as some of the author's other books so if you've read them you may enjoy and have more context for this world. At times, I did feel like I was missing some things but nothing too big to not miss out on the story. Wendy was bold and had misconceptions about Hook so it was fun to see her have to come to face with the truth. I would've liked to have Hook's pov but the back and forth between him and Wendy was entertaining. I also would've liked there to be more build up to the romance but I did enjoy seeing Wendy, Hook, and the crew come together to defeat Peter. Overall, this was a good read worth giving a try.

This was the first book I have read by Megan Charlie and it was a really good Retelling of Peter Pan with a villainous Peter Pan and a heroic Captain James Hook. I enjoyed all the characters in this story. Wendy seemed like a strong and intelligent character and I liked her sheerie faeries as well. Captain James Hook and his crew on the Jolly Roger were all also fun to get to know, including the cat Mirai. I look forward to looking into more by this author in the future.

I enjoyed this tad darker spin on a Peter Pan retelling. Wendy and Hook are enemies and fighting for different things, but also for the same thing, freedom from Neverland. We learn of the struggles that Neverland is facing at what is presumed to be the hands of Peter. He can be very persuasive as to what he wants and to whom he wants actions tsken against. He has no real reason to presume otherwise. He's playing a game, but the game is not really his. As the story unfolds, we learn that not everything is as it seems. And that the one you least expect it to be is at the heart of so much hurt and pain.
