Gideon Ryker is back at it ; trying to find a way to free the brainwashed cult town he and his sister managed to escape from. When Gideon's old friend from the French Foreign Legion shows up to help him find a way to get to the people and offer freedom to those who wished to leave, all hell starts breaking loose within the compound. Great action and a really intriguing continuing story line.
I am giving this book a 4/5 stars just because it was a little difficult to keep track of so many characters. One reason for that, is that it’s been a while since I read books one and two so I had to reach back in my memory and think about who they were and what their role was in the story. And, also, this is a rewrite of the same book that was published last spring, and that was a bit confusing to me at first since I read that book too. This updated version of the story, though, flows better and adds a few new twists that weren't in the first one. If you read Proof of Life when it first came out and felt a bit confused by it, I encourage you to not give up on the series but to read this new rewritten version. I've liked Gideon's character throughout the series and how he has grown into the role of being a leader, even though he resisted that as much as he could. Gideon left New Eden when he was 16 and never planned on going back, but circumstances changed and he had no choice. Gideon is the type of character who is noble and caring and is a natural leader. While these characteristics are admirable in any person, they are also the reason Gideon can’t just walk away and ignore a problem. When someone is being mistreated, manipulated, and even killed, he can't help but get involved. At times we throughout the series we find him fighting within himself about how New Eden isn’t his problem, and that he doesn’t owe anything to them, but in his heart he knows different and that it has to be him that leads the group of rescuers to help these trapped and frightened people, and he fights for what’s right with everything he’s got. I like that he is willing to take risks to help save others, that he can persuade colleagues to go along with him, but that he is also the kind of leader who listens to others and takes their advice and values their contributions.
This is a great series and after finishing “Proof of Life”, I’m looking forward to what comes next for Gideon and his family and followers.
I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This story begins with Gideon and his crew trying to plan for what happens next in their confrontation with the Brotherhood. His group is spread to several safehouses to evade the Brotherhood. Meanwhile, the Brotherhood located at New Eden, is now being led by a fanatic known as Sister Miranda is making examples of those who have fled to keep the remaining occupants in line. This performed by the group known as the Chosen.
Read along and discover what the eventual plan for Gabriel is, what other option is also available for Gideon and what obstacles Miranda faces as she tries to maintain control. It all is revraled in the exciting conclusion. Don't miss out!
I'm not really sure where the author was trying to go with this one. The first two books were awesome, but this one really went, well I don't honestly know where it went. It had too many moving parts. It was hard to follow and keep up. This probably shouldn't have been titled after Ryker, more of a New Eden, featuring Ryker as it really wasn't about him. If it's another book in this series, I hope it falls in line with the first two.
So confusing. I would recommend reading book 2 in the series right before reading this one. I spent the first half of the book trying to figure out what was going on.
If you liked Test Of Faith, you will really like this one as it has even more action and plot twists. Gideon and Faithless have captured Gabriel and now it is time to decide how to deal with New Eden. Miranda has taken over the Sisters Of The Order and Viktor is Commander of The Chosen. Without Father Gabriel, things start to fall apart. Gideon and Zara also have to deal with a west coast gangster and his group who are doing the dirty work for New Eden and are involved with human trafficking. Will Gideon be able to put an end to New Eden and what will happen to the innocents if he does?
