We love to see new faces and new voices in the splatterpunk community, and Sarah DeRosa came out swinging with this debut. The streets were talking, and I was counting down the days til it dropped so I could dive in. We are treated to not 1 but 3 different stories, each getting more fucked as we go. Each one had me pausing between the next to let the anyone within earshot know how great these stories are! (I’ll even post my receipts.)
Quick Synopsis:
Once again, I am not the biggest fan of collections & their tendencies to be one note. Not the case with these at ALL. “All in the Sauce” tells the tale of a man who only wants his hot dog Coney Island style, and he always gets what he wants. “Chubby Bunny” is about a young girl’s escalating trip with a church youth leader and the dangers of disregarded red flags. “Meant to Brie” paints a portrait of a man’s obsession with cheese and how following the stinkiest scent might not have been the worst idea he’d ever had.
One of the joys of finding new indie authors is the opportunity to see the genre from another POV. See how others think, what they notice that others might not, and read their interpretation of situations back. What was my take away from Sarah’s POV? WHEW. I think I might have met a new literary soulmate. An easy, instant buy whenever she drops new work for sure. Her attention to detail is so exactly what I look for in stories. I could see, hear, feel, smell, and taste everything…unfortunately. 🤢 Also: her subtle social commentary is scathing, borderline SHADY and I ate up every morsel of it. I am so excited for what else she has in store for us down the line. Very excited to be featured with her in the Splatter Chatter Anthology, with her story “Tinnitus,” which you all should check out as well. Mark my words, Sarah DeRosa is going to shake Splatterpunk up in a major way & have you begging for more!
