SHADOW TARGET (A Ryan Cage FBI Action Thriller—Book 2) is the second novel in a new series by action thriller author Vin Strong. The series begins with SHADOW GAME (Book 1).
The Ryan Cage series delivers a high-octane action thriller, immersing you in a world of exhilarating suspense. Its edge-of-your-seat tension, breathtaking narrative turns, and charismatic protagonist will leave an indelible mark on your emotions and have you turning pages late into the night. Fans of Brad Thor, Vince Flynn, and Daniel Silva are sure to fall in love with their next favorite action hero.
Having read Shadow Target and its predecessor Shadow Game, I found both novels to be thrilling and engaging reads filled with non-stop action. However, I couldn’t help but grapple with some aspects of the storytelling, particularly the portrayal of physics-defying feats and the occasional lack of attention to real-world accuracy. While I appreciate fiction’s ability to stretch the imagination, the premise of these books is grounded in real-world scenarios, and I feel they should closely resemble plausible possibilities. That said, the entertainment value remained high, making the journey worthwhile.
One specific example that stood out to me was the skydiving sequence in Shadow Target. The idea of parachuting onto a moving passenger plane, opening its cargo door—a feat that would require nearly 24,000 pounds of force—and entering the aircraft felt implausible even within the scope of fiction. While such scenes might be easier to digest on screen with the aid of special effects, in a book, these moments demand a greater suspension of disbelief.
Additionally, as someone with knowledge of military structure, I found it odd that the characters Griggs and Cage, who are portrayed as commanders, were given the rank of Sergeants. Sergeants do not hold command positions in the military hierarchy, which detracts from the authenticity of the story. This may not bother readers without a military background, but a little research into ranks and roles could have enhanced the credibility of the narrative.
Despite these critiques, I thoroughly enjoyed both Shadow Target and Shadow Game. They offered a refreshing break from my usual reading preferences of nonfiction and fantasy, delivering plenty of heart-pounding moments and excitement. For readers who love action-packed thrillers, these books are undoubtedly worth exploring.
I know that Special Forces are an élite group. However, to have someone be ejected from an aircraft, freefall and then parachute on to a passenger aircraft travelling at cruising speed (c.450 mph!), landing on the wing - about 2 metres in width if far enough from the fuselage not to be immediately noticed, and then gaining access to the baggage hold - in my experience, situated below the wing level -is pushing credibility to the absolute limit! Personally, I didn't buy it! General story okay, but if I hear a female voice behind me, I don't need to see the person to know that it isn't "the man with the brown brogues" (quoting from memory!).
First book in series started out as a 4 then after completing it went down to a 3. This book started out similarly but went downhill fast. Apparently this specialized FBI team only consists of our main character and a PHD negotiator who needs to talk to Mom for advice. Continuing with theme from #1, every piece of land, object needs to be intricately described. I will not read anything from this author again!
Nonstop action from start to finish. If you want action, this is your book. The characters are interesting and somewhat relatable. Though, since one is a combat hardened veteran and the other a PhD with an edetic memory, they aren't common everyday folks. If you like thrillers, you'll LOVE this story.
This novel moved at a rapid pace, the characters were likeable and believable. Some of the action sequences, though well paced, stretched credulity. Won’t spoil the plot by relating them here but they did give me pause. Having said that, I read it, enjoyed it, and will continue with the series.
Sometimes unbelievable, but then when you’re writing about Special Forces the boundaries seem to be set father apart and very firmly anchored! In short you are going to enjoy the tale!
Action packed and fast moving! This book is totally captivating as you are emerged into a world of danger while following the challenges of the people who stop terrorists.
Utilizing training from the military and FBI, an agent goes above and beyond. Well written and full of twists and turns you would never expect!a real page turner.
Very good fantasy but completely unbelievable but still found it entertaining. If you want something to take your mind off every day life this is the book for you
