whether you believe in the paranormal or not, it makes for an entertaining read! I found this audiobook on my library app, and 12 year old me would've loved this! As a 44 year old listener, Yvettes hammed up voice did grate me a little. But I'm not the target audience, and having watched most haunted when I was younger, really enjoyed this well structured audiobook.
Being from the UK, I loved looking up these locations (as most were UK based) as I'm sure the age appropriate readers would.
I grew up on a diet of Most Haunted, rushing to the schoolyard to talk about the latest episode with my friends and waiting eagerly for every new episode. It was pure excitement, the right level of spooky entertainment and when I saw this book, written by Yvette Fielding and amazingly illustrated by Hannah Shaw, it was too good to miss!
We visit a handful of castles and learn their stories, revealing legends of ghosts and paranormal activity. Whether you believe in it or not, it’s a great read and I really enjoyed learning about the castles spooky pasts. I loved the format of this book and it made for very easy and entertaining reading! Accidentally read it in one sitting!
There’s succinct little summaries on each of the sighted ghosts as well as a retelling of the times Yvette & Most Haunted gang visited and did their investigations. It was great and so nostalgic to read, I want to go back and rewatch the TV show! It’d be a great read for younger audiences, as long as they had their parents permission of course for the retelling of scary ghost stories!!
Most Haunted Castles is just one in this greatly thought up series and I’ve definitely been left wanting more! Most Haunted Houses and Most Haunted Theatres also in this series have now been highly boosted to my ‘must read’ lists.
Thank you to the author and publisher for this book on NetGalley in return for my honest thoughts and review.
I love all things paranormal and I am always intrigued when a new book is published by Yvette - I loved the book on Most Haunted Theatres so was delighted to pick up a copy of Most Haunted Castles - visiting Castle is a hobby for me so I was intrigued as to what, and which locations would be covered in the book!
I have watched Yvette Fielding on TV for years now and I love the Most Haunted tv series. I was really keen to get my hands on a copy of this book as I said at the start of my review – and it didn’t disappoint, it is pitched really well for the target audience as well and not too scary!
I loved that the book told the stories of what happens in some of the properties, in this case, Castles, and the wide mix of hauntings that occur, along with the number of witnesses to some of the incidents and what has happened there was great. I have seen a few of the locations on the Most Haunted series but it was great to read about what was also happening when the cameras were not rolling.
I loved that the book covered a wide variety of geographic locations as well and I have been to a couple of the venues (eek!!)
Really enjoyable read, definitely one to make you think and look forward to more of the same style book on other haunted locations - I have her next book on Most Haunted Houses to read next! It as a fab way to pass a few hours
It is 5 stars from me for this one – highly recommended!
👻 Do you dare to step inside some of the world’s most haunted castles? 🏰
From chilling legends to real-life investigations, this book will have you questioning every creak in the night…
Do you believe in the paranormal? You might after this book!
While it’s written for younger readers, it’s well crafted. You get the history of so-called “haunted” castles of the UK and Europe including the ghost stories as well as the investigations for each one.
Now, if you know anything about the series “Most Haunted”, you’ll know to take it with a grain of salt — but it’s an entertaining, informative read with great illustrations.
I also had fun watching the episodes of each castle on YouTube after reading about them.
Due to the wording used, I would say this is a fantastic but very chilling read suitable for age 12+ confident readers. Yvette really knows her stuff when it comes to paranormal/ghost hunting. I was terrified throughout reading this myself!
The audio was read by Yvette and it was brilliant. Love the spooky true stories, always makes me think I'd love to investigate Ghost sightings, and then I hear this and think NOPE.
The story at the end, absolutely not going there! Enjoy!
Very good but quite scary, certainly for young children so I guess this is best for YA? I particularly liked the history for each place and reading about the different ghostly phenomena. How they go into some of these places I have no idea!
We are going to visit some VERY haunted spooky castles! This was oodles of fun!
I read Yvette Fielding’s Most Haunted Theatres back in 2024 and LOVED it, so I was eager to try this new book as well, and what best time than during Halloween?
In this one we visit 9 locations again, this time no theatres, this time we are visiting terrifying spooky castles! 7 of them are in the UK, but 2 are in Romania, and one of those two is even Dracula’s castle! Oh heck yes!
Just like the other book in the series each chapter starts with a location, followed by the ghosts one can meet/see there (from kids to white ladies to threatening presences) to what kind of paranormal activity is brewing there, you know throwing stuff, music, sounds, orbs, that stuff. I loved that each location starts with this to give a bit of an intro to what we can expect, that way you can get more hyped about it. After that we learn more about the history of the castle, some of them are OK, but some definitely scream OH YES I AM GOING TO GET SO HAUNTED. I really enjoyed reading about the history of the castles, however the favourite part of each location is reading about Yvette Fielding’s experiences at those places along with her crew. From ghosts yeeting around books in a library to doors just closing and not opening to strange footsteps and messages to warn them. It was just so much fun to read and I love how it just feels like you are there with the crew. Some parts were just terrifying and yes, I lost some sleep because of that, haha. But I don’t mind. It is worth it! I haven’t been able to, but just as I said in my review for the previous book, I should really go on Youtube and see if I can find her series there because I would love to see these things for real. My favourite castles? Definitely the Romania ones. Those were just NOPE NOPE NOPE. Especially the things that happened there. Way more over the top than in the UK. Though I have to say the girl luring people over the edge of a castle or whatever was lurking in that basement/cellar also were a big nope.
The writing style is just way too much fun! It really keeps you engaged and on your toes!
The illustrations by Hannah Shaw were fabulous once again. She really captures the spooky environment and the ghosts!
I cannot wait until next year when Haunted Houses comes out, which I think will be my absolute favourites. Don’t get me wrong, castles and theatres are fun, but houses is were it is at for me! I would recommend these books to all if you are in the mood to learn more about various hauntings~
