Deadly Bonds is another excellent entry in the Detective Jackson series by L. J. Sellers. Jackson is a detective in the Eugene, Oregon P.D. and the book opens as he is called to the scene of a murder. A young woman lies dead in a run-down house, although the cause of death is not immediately apparent. In searching the house, Jackson finds a terrified three-year-old boy hiding in a crawl space under the house. Jackson convinces the child to trust him enough to come out of his hiding space and the boy immediately bonds with Jackson and won't let go of him.

Jackson naturally attempts to pass the child off to Child Services, but that goes badly and so Jackson agrees to hang on to the child temporarily while he searches for relatives who can take the boy. This may not be the best idea in the world, because at the moment, Jackson is especially vulnerable in the family department. His own daughter, Katie, is estranged and living away from home. At the same time, the daughter-in-law of Kera Kollmorgan, Jackson's Significant Other, has been badly injured in an auto accident and is not expected to live. Needless to say, Jackson's personal responsibilities to his family are thus basically colliding head-on with his obligations to the job.

Jackson's efforts to keep all these balls in the air at the same time is hindered by the city's budget crisis, which has led to staffing cuts in the P.D. In consequence, Detective Lara Evans, one of Jackson's most valuable teammates, is pulled off the investigation into the woman's murder to investigate the death of a star college football player. This makes the investigation into the original victim's death all that more difficult and places even more responsibility on Jackson's shoulders.

Sellers very deftly moves back and forth between the two death investigations and the multiple crises in Jackson's personal life. It makes for a swift-moving and very enjoyable read. The tension grows as the book progresses and ends in a great climax. Jackson is a very capable and sympathetic protagonist, and Deadly Bonds is another winner from this prolific author.

I literally devoured this book over a few hours. As an avid crime fiction fan I am ashamed to say I have not until now read a book written by L.J. Sellers, but now that I have, I am hungry for more.

What is the book about?

When a young mother is found murdered in a derelict Eugene neighborhood—and her terrified young son is discovered hiding beneath the floorboards—Detective Jackson reluctantly takes the case. His own life is already in chaos, with his runaway teenage daughter, Katie, still gone and his girlfriend, Kera, facing her own family crisis.

Matters get more complicated when the orphaned boy bonds with Jackson, triggering unexpected emotions and compromising his ability to investigate. Meanwhile, Detective Evans, one of Jackson’s most valuable colleagues, is pulled off the case to look into the death of a University of Oregon football star—leaving the homicide task force shorthanded. As Jackson works to solve the murder and find a home for little Benjie, he soon faces devastating choices that threaten everything he holds dear.

My Review:

Although the ninth book in the Detective Jackson Mystery series I had no issue with reading this book as a stand-alone novel. I didn't get a sense of disconnect or wondering what I was missing which was great. I do intend to go back to book one and read some more of this fantastic series.

I read a lot of crime fiction and found the descriptions used of police procedurals was excellent in this book. Enough of it to paint a clear picture and give you that sense of watching something on crime TV in your mind, but not so much that you lost the plot or connection with any of the characters.

Detective Jackson is a gem of a character, I am sure he has developed over the series of books, but in this novel he's a man with a big heart and a thirst for justice. He takes to little Benjie, left without a mother thanks to her murderer and goes over and beyond the call of duty to help this little boy.

All of the characters were likeable, Evans was another stand out Detective in the novel, the blurred lines between her professional and personal relationship with Jackson created some questions and tension. I liked the way the book ran two parallel cases alongside each other.

As Jackson is investigating the murder of Benjie's mother, Evans is hot on the case of the unusual death of a young football star, it takes her into risky situations, she's a gutsy detective and I really liked her in this book.

The plot is brilliant, it was easy enjoyable and fluid reading for me, I didn't even take a break, I just kept going, keen to see what the finale was going to look like. It did not let me down, slightly predictable in parts but not all, so some surprises in there too.

There is excellent and exciting synergy that builds up between cases towards the end of the book and it's done really well.

Sellers as a writer has done a good job of balancing the human side of the Detectives in the novel with their working persona's and it's nice to get a taste of both. Some books I find err too far one way or another, but I found this novel very balanced.

What more can I say really? It was just an excellent read, it's create an interest for me to read more of the series and I hope there is still more to come. This one won't let you down if you like a good crime thriller that is well written and keeps you interested from the word go.

I received a copy of this book thanks to the publishers via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I received and advance copy of “Deadly Bonds” in exchange for an honest review.

L.J. Sellers’ “Deadly Bonds” creates strong main characters and a cast of great support characters. Her protagonist is Wade Jackson, the lead detective in a murder investigation of a young woman found in an abandoned house. Jackson’s murder case is only one of the cases under investigation by his team. His team is also looking into the suspicious death of a star college football player. There is an investigation a of drug related automobile accident with multiple injuries. Sellers’ story opens the eyes of her readers showing Jackson’s team having to deal with several investigations at the same time.

“Deadly Bonds” places the reader at each of the investigations. Sellers’ support characters of both good guys and bad guys, keep “Deadly Bonds” story moving at steady pace. The story’s pace quickens and Sellers grabs readers’ attention helping them see each crime scene being investigated from the point of view of Jackson or each of his team None of the cases has specific suspects, and there are more questions than answers.

The murder case has an intriguing wrinkle when Jackson discovers a young boy hiding under the crime scene’s house of the murdered mother. Jackson’s crime scene turns out to be part of rental house scam. The dead football player is known to have a drug problem. The auto accident causes the death of Jackson’s girlfriend Kera’s daughter, Danette. Danette’s death leaves Kera to raise her daughter’s son.

All of these wrinkles add great sub-plots to “Deadly Bonds.” Seller’s readers are kept sitting on the edge their seats as each investigation continues. Sellers adds complications to the story slowly weaving social issues into the investigations. Benjie, the young son of Jackson’s murder victim, has attached himself to Jackson. Sellers describes the bond developing between Benjie and Jackson and his focus on keeping Benjie safe while he searches relatives for the boy. The twists and turns of the story rapidly increase the intrigue and pace of the plot.

Jackson’s team investigations lead to unpredictable changing of direction of the plot. Each change adds to the suspense of Sellers’ story. Readers won’t want to put “Deadly Bonds,” down as the tension has them holding their breath waiting for the thrilling conclusion. Just as readers think they are close to story’s resolve, Sellers’ shows readers a new twist requiring action from Jackson’s entire team to catch the antagonist.

“Deadly Bonds” is a great mystery and the ending illustrates Sellers’ skills and creativity of writing a mystery seeming like real life showing readers how many different social issues add to the outcome of the mystery and suspense of her story line. Sellers’ well-developed characters deliver a riveting story in “Deadly Bonds.” I know Sellers’ fans will look forward the next Jackson book. No spoilers from this reviewer, I recommend this book and think “Deadly Bonds” is one of Sellers best books earning a 5 star ranking.

Jackson new case changes everything. A dead woman and a frightened little boy in the basement, who won't let go of Jackson, so that he takes him in until they find his relatives. But this makes his runaway daughter Katie come home to help him take care of little Benjie. But Katie has a secret...
It also means he has someone else to let down after constantly disappointing Katie and also Kera, his girlfriend, who currently fears for her daughter-in-law, who's in hospital with a brain injury, while caring for her grandson because Keras son died in Iraq.
And when Jacksons case starts to intertwine with a college-football-player who died of a sudden heart-attack, Evans case, who's still in love with Jackson and makes him question everything he has, his taking in Benji also jeopardises Katie...

Oh my, I used to love Jackson-mysteries, now i develop a love/hate relationship with them.
As always the writing is crisp and detailed, the back and forth between the cases, present and past and all these private issues is perfect and while I think that we wouldn't need two cases intertwining everytime here it's on point.
But also the story is repetitive with Jackson letting Kera down constantly, his problems after accidentally shooting his ex wife and his daughter Katie, who turned from his sweet girl into a troubled teenager. Plus the department is short on money which demands a lot from Jackson. Also, there's again a lot unresolved, wich isn't bad but I'd like some answers now.

And this time I really got emotionally involved. The cases sometimes do that to me. Little Benjie had me instantly, being so polite and mature, healthy eating, simply an amazing little boy, 3 years old but acting like 20. Then the conclusion, which was perfect but also so tragic, for Benjie and the man who came after him. And I was all angsty over Jacksons private life. This man irritates me! With how easily he takes in Benji but has a hard time commiting to Kera with Micah. With how he imagines his future family and then dreams of his colleague kissing him. With talking to her but not to his girlfriend. With him feeling that he's more than friends with Evans while wanting to solve his problems with Kera. With not knowing whether he's attracted to Evans because she's a free bird or it might be the reason he's not with her.
All this will they, won't they, it made me crazy. Then again him not doing things like he should makes him flawed and real. But I almost celebrated when Kera got really mad, for the first time. I just don't understand why she puts up with all of it. Because obviously he thinks of being with her but for Katie's sake, for stability and for doing right by Micah, who lost both his parents. So it's for the wrong reasons.

All in all it's a great read and one of the better in the series. The angsty drama plus two interesting cases, intertwining perfectly and becoming more complex and complicated the more we find out and surprising twists all though the story had it all.

A police story full of excitement, suspense and passion, Deadly Bonds hooks the reader with a mysterious murder leaving a small boy as the only witness. The story moves through more deaths, and takes many turns to keep the reader interested and excited. Whether it is the identity of the killer or the result of the romantic involvements, the answers don't fall into place until the end. The story is compelling, the characters are three-dimensional, and the writing is clear and direct. I look forward to reading more of Sellers' work.

A Truly Amazing Series

Detective Jackson and Detective Evans investigate the murder of a college football player. A woman is found dead in an abandoned home. Do the cases relate to each other?

Detective Jackson's relationship with his girlfriend Kera. Detective Evans has been seeing another police officer for the past year. Working together is hard for both of them. They both have feelings for each other.

This is an amazing series. I hope the next book in this series comes out soon. I loved all her books.

Deadly Bonds is the latest in a series of nine crime novels by L.J. Sellers starring Detective Wade Jackson, and is the only one Ive personally read. I was interested to see if this can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel, even if the reader doesn’t know any background or previous storylines about the characters.
The story follows the investigation by Jackson and his team into the murder of young mother Amanda Carter, whose young boy Benjie was found hiding in fear at the house where she was killed, and the separate investigation into the death of well-known college football player Logan Grayson. The two narratives intertwine as the story continues, which I really enjoyed and found interesting.
L.J Sellers seems to be really skilled at creating three-dimensional, interesting characters and Jackson is certainly one of them. His own daughter Katie has run away from home and, in trying to deal with this, we see that he doesn’t always handle things as well as he should. He is a flawed character, trying to make up for what he sees as his failure with Katie by looking after Benjie, the victim Amanda Cater’s little boy, and this only makes me like him more as a character- he recognises that is not perfect but he is trying to make amends, and he continues to try to do so with his own daughter where possible. Add this to the fact that he seems to be a talented, experienced Detective and I found him really likable as a character.
In contrast, his colleague Evans is a lot less experienced. She has been trained by Jackson and is eager to prove herself. She can be a little reckless and takes risks on a couple of occasions, but at the same time is a brilliant Detective. Both her and Jackson seem to work well together and are convincing as a team.
The novel seems well-researched and is skilfully written to move along at just the right pace, keeping me interested throughout; it doesn’t seem rushed but at no point teeters on dull. Having never read any other of her Detective Jackson books, I found that the few details I needed to know were concisely explained as I read through it and I had no problems understanding what was happening as the storyline was quite self-contained. The plot kept the tension high and the added inclusion of traumatised little boy Benjie, and other characters who pulled at my heart strings, meant I really cared about the outcome of this novel, something that I don’t always feel.
Overall, Deadly Bonds is a really enjoyable detective novel and I would definitely want to read others in the series. Highly recommended!

It’s been a while since I last read a Detective Jackson book by Eugene author LJ Sellers, far too long. I remember being blown away – literally – with The Sex Club, a book I hadn’t expected to enjoy but thoroughly did and given the opportunity to read her latest novel - Deadly Bonds – I jumped at the chance. I wasn’t disappointed!

Over the years, Jackson’s character has changed – as you’d expect – and now that the main character is in a steady relationship he has to take a fresh look on life and decide what’s important to him. Estranged from his daughter Katie Jackson has to fight to keep their relationship on par and despite his best efforts and a job that demands most of his time he struggles to make it work.

This is one of the things I really enjoy about the Jackson books, the family angle and how he never appears to have an easy life whether that’s down to his relationships, his daughter, his brother or a number of other variables. One thing you can be certain of – there’s never a dull moment!

I really enjoy the cat and mouse chase in the book where we follow Evans and Jackson on their quest for truth – incidentally the final third flew by and the book was over before I knew it. An effortless read, I do enjoy the author’s writing style.

One thing I didn’t enjoy so much, and I am being hyper critical –this is a guy/bloke thing – was the will they won’t they part of the Evans/Jackson relationship. When we follow Evans’s point of view throughout the book we are often reminded of an unrequited love and a desire to couple up with her colleague. I’ve never been one for romance and although this book is far from romantic I wanted to give a balanced view.

The one thing I absolutely loved about this book – young three year old Benjie. What’s not to love? A little kid who doesn’t like junk food, loves puzzles and has a character of a 20 year old. He brings the book to life in more ways than one and I defy anyone who reads the book not to fall in love with him and want to adopt him! Winner winner, chicken dinner – well done LJ.

A well crafted book, a good plot and a variety of interesting characters – some old, some new - Deadly Bonds is a marvellous addition to the Jackson stable. If you haven’t read any of the others do give them a go, you won’t be disappointed.

You'll never put your Kindle down.

Jackson not only good detective, he's a great father too. Two mysteries running at the same time, lots of twists and turns. At the end the way came together, was surprising. Cover as usual gives away little. At the end you'll feel good about reading this story, and like me you'll want to read this author's other books.

Oh I think I've just discovered another great author who I've missed out on! Oh why didn't someone tell me about her before.

As you can tell this is the first book by L J Sellers I have read thanks to Amazon Publishing via Net Galley.
I was first attracted by the cover. I don't why, but covers with children or tragedies always seem to attract me. Does that make me warped [answers on a postcard!] I'm a sucker for a good mystery with a good plot so I settled down today to read this one.

L J Sellers is an award winning Journalist and two time reader's favorite Award winner. She's a fan of Police procedures.
Well, that really does come across in this book, she has done extensive research flawlessly. She made me feel like I was part of the Crime team.

Detective Jackson I see stars in some of her other books [I need to read these]. To me he comes across as a great detective and knows his 'stuff'. Very dedicated. I'm not sure what happened in his past personal life but looks like he has experienced some tragedies himself. [That's why I need to read these other books prior to this one] It is a stand a lone book, but to get the rounded picture I want to go back a bit on them.

I'm not giving away the plot if I say he ends up looking after a little boy from a crime scene where his Mother got murdered. I could so understand him becoming close to this quite little cherub.

His partner Evans being assigned to one case and Detective Jackson to another Evans thinks at the time she drawn the short straw.

There was far more events, plotting and turns in this read than I expected. I was glued to the book until I finished it. Sat at my Kitchen table waiting for tea to cook with Kindle still in hand! My Kindle was glued to me all day today.

Thank you to Amazon Publishing for granted me a copy of this to read and review and thanks to the author L J Sellers for a remarkable entertaining read that took me from real life for a few hours to something really gripping that I forgot where I was for a few hours.

I so want to read more of this authors books. Do I recommend it? hell yes!

DEADLY BONDS by L.J. Sellers

I received a free signed paperback copy of this book from a Goodreads Giveaway. In exchange for receiving this book I am writing a fair and honest review.

This is the first book I have read by this author. Judging by the book list, this is the 9th Detective Jackson book, however, even though it is part of a series, this book works just as well as a stand-alone novel.

The story takes place in Eugene, Oregon where Detective Jackson lives and works. The story begins with the discovery of a partially clad young woman dead in a run down rental house. Her three year old boy was found hiding under the house and was coaxed out of hiding by Detective Jackson.

The young boy forms a quick attachment to the Detective and ends up staying with him while he searches for any relatives the boy might have.

The story takes on another layer of complexity when the body of a University of Oregon star football player is found dead on his bathroom floor.

Detectives must unravel the mystery of both deaths and do so while also protecting Benji.

This book has a multitude of twists and turns and it will keep you guessing right to the end.

Detective Jackson emerges from the story as a compelling, caring, complex and vivid character.

This story is a rare gem. It is not very often that I find myself surprised by the outcome of a plot. Usually I have figured out "who done it" by the middle of a book. DEADLY BONDS is the exception. I was surprised by the ending and it is because of this that I must give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

After reading DEADLY BONDS, I am a fan of author L.J. Sellers and I will be reading the rest of the available Detective Jackson mysteries.

If you are looking for a book that will keep you reading long after you should have gone to bed, this is it.

Deadly Bonds (A Detective Jackson Mystery) is an engaging book by L.J. Sellers. Detective Wade Jackson’s life changes when he investigates the murder of Amanda Carter. Her three-year-old son, Benjie, traumatised after witnessing her death, bonds with the detective who becomes his temporary guardian. Solving the case proves difficult for Jackson whose girlfriend Kera has a family crisis that puts a strain on their relationship. Katie, his emotionally confused daughter, runs away and adorable Benjie needs constant supervision. The background search conducted by Detective Jackson on Benjie’s mother reveals that the name Amanda Carter is an alias, and her neighbour’s teen son, who behaves like a future psycho killer, knows more about the victim’s home than he admits. When a university football player suddenly dies, Jackson’s superiors make that case a priority, hindering and frustrating him from quickly solving his current one.

Suspense is not lacking in Deadly Bonds (A Detective Jackson Mystery) by L.J. Sellers. She has created an intricate plot with interesting characters. Although Detective Jackson is the protagonist, other characters get a fair opportunity to shine in the roles they play, so readers will become more familiar with them as their personal lives come under scrutiny. The author writes nicely, taking time to form her characters properly in a good setting. Connecting the dots in this mystery is fun as L.J. Sellers strings you along with surprising little clues that pop up as Jackson’s team conduct their investigation. I enjoyed reading Deadly Bonds very much.

Deadly Bonds by L. J. Sellers is part of a series featuring Detective Wade Jackson. I wasn't familiar with this series of mystery/suspense novels, but I enjoyed it very much. Detective Jackson is an ordinary, middle-aged man, with plenty of problems of his own, but who has a commitment to doing the right thing.

When investigating the death of a young woman, he discovers a hidden five-year-old boy. The boy attaches himself to Jackson, and Jackson feels the bond developing between them, but will it compromise his ability to solve the case.

In the meantime, Detective Evans, his protege, is reassigned to another case involving the death of a football player, that may be a simple heart attack. Jackson's team is understaffed her talents are missed. Especially since Jackson fears that the boy may be a target as well.

Jackson is a likable and fallible protagonist, working hard to do the right thing and sometimes unsure what that is. Well-written and compelling mystery. I may look for the first in the series; I liked Jackson and the plot that much.

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Wow, how have I missed reading L.J. Sellers before? Well that won't happen again. This is a great suspense/crime novel. So much action and a pace that won't let you put it down. This has all the elements working together in symmetry. Everything I look for in a crime novel at least: highly probable story line, deep character building, not dependent on previous novels, not overly descriptive in brutality, not filled with expletives.
Everything here is plausible, no last minute miracle resolution from left field. Characters that you empathize with, without having to have read the previous novels. Sure, it's a crime novel so there is death and murder but it is left so much up to the readers imagination. More film noir and less Sam Peckinpah. People curse, that's just a fact of everyday life, but not every word.
This author knows his stuff and he shows how to put it together in this novel. I'll be back tracking now and reading from the beginning.

Wade Jackson’s life is still in turmoil after the death of his ex-wife and the breach in his relationship with his daughter, Katie. Katie initially blamed Jackson for her mother’s death and the detrimental effect is still being felt, although Katie does now communicate with her father via text.

Jackson is one of my favourite types of protagonists and I love the way his character has developed over the series. He’s essentially a good guy with a social conscience, realistic and not perfect. He is struggling to come to terms with Katie having run away from home and missing her terribly. Jackson believes he’s failed his daughter and worries about her. He also has guilt issues about his girlfriend, Kera, who is dealing with her own family troubles. Jackson never seems to be able to fully support her due to his demanding job, now even more so because of budget cuts to the department.

As Jackson and his Violent Crimes Unit team investigate the possible homicide of a young woman in a less than salubrious area, Jackson finds the victim’s three year old son. His feelings towards the boy show Jackson in a completely different and interesting light although I’m not sure how true to life it is for Jackson to take custody of Benjie the way he does. The team are swamped by questions relating to the case but have no viable answers.

Detective Lara Evans has caught her own case and is pulled off Jackson’s team, leaving the Violent Crimes Unit even more short-handed. The more Evans’ investigation progresses the more sure she becomes that her case and Jackson’s are tied together. The credible plot line and the combining action between the two well crafted and interwoven cases develops effectively and moves the story along perfectly. An unexpected resolution to the linked cases and a bombshell for Jackson conclude a really good addition to this series. Deadly Bonds could be read as a stand alone but, if as I do, you like to get the full story about the characters in a series, I would choose to start at the beginning.

I like the ‘voice’ Patrick Lawlor gives Jackson, it conveys his personality very well, and he does a great job with the other characterisations too. Looking forward to Wrongful Death – coming in March!

Eugene, Oregon police detective Wade Jackson’s newest case takes him to a scene where a young woman’s dead body is discovered in a nearly empty house, but the most startling thing about it is when he discovers her three-year-old son hidden beneath the floorboards in a closet. The boy, Benjie, immediately bonds with Jackson, who already has enough on his plate, on a personal level: His teenage daughter’s whereabouts are unknown, and his girlfriend, Kera, is going through her own personal crisis, with the mother of her grandson (whose father, Kera’s son, had been killed in Iraq) on life support after being in a car crash.

The usual cast of terrific supporting characters is present, the other detectives in the Violent Crimes Unit, of which Jackson is task force leader: Rob “Schak” Schakowski; Jackson’s mentee, Lara Evans; Michael Quince; and their boss, Sgt. Denise Lammers. Evans, who has romantic feelings towards Jackson, is a fascinating character in her own right. Coming from an abusive household, she now volunteers at a women’s support center, and hopes to join the SWAT team soon. When a new case surfaces, with the star quarterback of the college football team having been found dead in his apartment, Evans is tasked with that investigation. This one is a political nightmare, with the college and its football team being the city’s cash cow, and concerns that the death might be drug- and/or steroid-related. And soon the possibility arises that the two cases may overlap. Thebook races along to a suspense-filled conclusion, complete with kidnappings, and a series of new characters and events that had my head spinning.

This is the ninth entry in the series, and it is a winner. The author’s many fans will be delighted to know that the tenth and newest book, “Wrongful Death,” is due out in March.

DEADLY BONDS is the ninth in the Detective Wade Jackson Mysteries series, and it is a nail-biter, a real page-turner. It might just be the most thrilling tale of the series. You might be able to put it down every now and again, but the last quarter of the book demands that it be finished by making your heart pound and by making your eyes water. You want the very best outcome here for all concerned.

Jackson is a play-by-the-rules cop who suffers from his humanity. He is a cop first and foremost which causes him internal struggles when dealing with those people in his personal life he holds most dear. He investigates murder, and he knows that the first few days of an investigation mean the difference between finding the killer or not. This dedication to the job makes it hard to pay attention to those he cherishes.

This time, he not only catches the case, he makes a small friend who latches onto his heart and won't let go. The messiness of life does seem to get a little less messy and a whole lot messier with each new book.

As long as L. J. Sellers keeps writing them, I will keep on reading them.

I received a free copy of this book through the GoodReads First Reads giveaways.

Deadly Bonds by L.J. Sellers is an thrilling mystery novel. I have never read any of L.J. Sellers' novels, so this was my first and I enjoyed the book very much. I felt that the characters were well developed and the author provided a good storyline. I felt for Jackson as he struggled with his actions dealing with the needs of his daughter, his girlfriend and a ‘lost’ boy. I also appreciated the author for not taking the Evans possible love angle further as I do not appreciate the whiny, ‘I wish he was my lover’ female character. Maybe Jackson and Evans have a history together, I do not know what their relationship was like in prior novels, but I hope to find out as L.J. Sellers is a new author on my to-read list.

I was a little disappointed when I got this book and discovered that it was number nine in the series. As a general rule I try to start a series from the beginning and read them in order. So I was very surprised that I was able immediately connect and invest in the characters. I wasn't able to pick up exactly how old the daughter was so that left me a little off though.

The plot was tightly paced and I was able to read this in one day. In fact, I had to stay up just to finish it. The only criticism I have is that some of the evidence presented and the quick conclusions drawn by the detectives at the end did not seem realistic. Really good book overall and I think that I will have to go back and start from the beginning

Deadly Bonds by L. J. Sellers is part of a series featuring Detective Wade Jackson.
Detective Jackson is a likeable, ordinary, middle-aged man, with health problems and a troubled teenaged daughter.

When investigating the death of a young woman, he discovers a hidden three year old boy. That the boy attaches himself to Jackson and Jackson becomes instantly attached to the boy seemed a little far fetched to me.

Though this was a good, quick read, I didn't find it as good as the previous books in the series.

More than Expected

The book hooked me at the beginning and held my interest throughout. The author did a good job of showing the intimate relationship between an older cop and a young boy of three, and the dialogue between those two characters was excellent. The author made it easy to picture the "bullpen" in a specific area of a police department, as well as the interaction between the police intent on solving several crimes. Well written; I will be reading more of this author's books.

This is book 9 in the Detective Jackson series. I have rad all 9 books in sequence ad thought book 7 and 8 were not as good as the first 6 but this book is definitely back on track. The main case is a young mother who is found murdered and her young son hiding. Jackson and the boy bond immediately and creates a opportunity for Jackson to rebuild his relationship with his teenage daughter. As has become th theme i this series 2 seperate cases turn out to be linked. A gripping book.

I have read all the other Detective Jackson books released up to this point, and loved all of them.

This one had me hooked from the first few pages and I have a devoured most of it in one sitting, as I could not put it down.

I have no idea how LJ Sellers does it, but the crimes, motivations etc.. never turn out how you expect, and I always love reading a series with a large quantity of recurring characters.

Another decent Detective Jackson book

Another decent read in the series. Intriguing enough to keep the pages turning and worth the time it takes to read. Having said that it is not the most exciting book I have ever read. I will continue with the series and hope the character development picks up some as I read more.

I liked this book less than others in the series, perhaps because the orphaned child situation didn't interest me that much. The plot line was strong enough and the main characters continue with tension and unpredictability.

I love mysteries, and this is actually a pretty decent mystery story. But I really got tired of one glaring problem, so much so I had trouble finishing the book.

The issue is that while the main protagonist is supposed to be a man - a big, rugged one - his inner dialog and actions are 100% female. It's so strongly out of character - or the character he's supposed to have - that it really is a problem.

Further, you get to hear the story from several points of view...but all of those points of view have the same tone and character. This I could actually overlook, but it's not as good a cast of characters as what I was expecting.

In any case, it's a pretty good story and the author is a pretty good writer. If she had one POV throughout the story and that POV was from a woman, the story telling would have been just fine.

As it is, I doubt I'll be reading any more of this author.

Just as a brief reminder to myself, the story is about a male detective who's raising a daughter on his own after his alcoholic wife died (not sure, but possibly murdered in a previous book in the series - but don't quote me on that). He get's called in to a murder scene where a young girl living in a run down rental house has been raped and murdered. While processing the scene, the detective (Jackson) discovers her son hiding and takes him in as his own son (!!!). The real father comes after the son and winds up kidnapping Jackson's daughter for a ransom.

You get the idea....

DEADLY BONDS by L J Sellers. Book 9 "Detective Jackson"
Another great plot, that gets mixed in with other cases. A lot with the crisis going on in Jackson home life. Jackson finds a litttle 3 year old boy in a crawl space, after his mother has been murder. He clings to Jackson until Jackson brings hiim. He calls his daughter and begs for her to help him, since he really should be working on the case. Bribery worked, he got her home, maybe for a few days, at least they were speaking now. His love for Kara is going thru a tough time also. A lot happens and will they be a family in the next book. One love's the investigations, you feel like you are there, as well as the emotion that Jackson is going thru, with the ones he loves.
