Not everyone wants to start over and for Journey Young that is the last thing she wants to do. But when her former track coach turns creepy, It leads her to the pristine campus of Glendale prep with two goals in mind. Win Championships and forget the past.
Roman Taylor has everything he could want. A full ride to Glendale Prep, a pretty girlfriend, and being best wide receiver in all of Gelco. But there’s only two things he wants more than anything, his dad’s support and D1 scouts to look his way.
With both of them on two different paths Journey and Roman didn’t expect to reconnect their long lost friendship at Glendale Prep, neither did they expect it to turn into anything more. Both with championships on the line, the last thing on Journey’s mind is to fall in love to throw her off her game but for Roman he will do whatever it takes to win the game and her heart.
The Goal is to win Championships but also each others hearts
Shoot for the Stars follows Journey as she transfers to Glendale Prep, seeking a fresh start after being assaulted by her track coach. At her new school, she unexpectedly reconnects with her childhood best friend, Roman, who she had lost touch with over the years. As Roman and Journey quickly grow close again, Roman's girlfriend, Chloe, becomes increasingly dismayed. The two must navigate their resurfacing feelings and decide if the spark between them is real and what sacrifices they’re willing to make to be together.
Roman and Journey are absolutely adorable together! I did feel a bit conflicted rooting for them because of Chloe, but everything fell into place perfectly in the end. Their deep connection really shines through, and you can feel how much their childhood friendship meant to both of them. Although the ending felt a bit abrupt, the story as a whole was solid and engaging. I can't wait to read more from Ciana—so proud of you, girl!
I have to start this review by saying the plot of this story was amazing!! I mean I loved the back story. The stage at where we mee the characters, Journey and Roman. I enjoyed their individual storylines as well as their love story.
But I have to say, reading this book was like reading a first draft. The skill of storytelling was lacking tremendously. The errors and mistakes in this book were profound. Even without an editor, it feels like a lot of these mistakes could have been corrected by a second or third read through by the author themselves. I would not recommend this book to anyone as it was a chore to get through. It took me days to fight through this book just because I was invested in the characters. The author was unable to keep key facts in the story straight and the way that my mind collects information as it reads, the repeated mix-ups and changes in story was too much for me to enjoy regardless of the great plot and lovable characters. Not written well at all.
thank you to the author for providing an e-arc in exchange for an honest review ❤️❤️❤️
This was such a sweet and cute book. I honestly wish the book was longer, so I could see them more. I loved the representation. From their race, to their story, to the things they went through. This book does have themes of sexual assault, which I thought was done so well. I appreciated Journey’s “journey” in finding a space where she can combat her negative feelings that stemmed from her experience. I also like Roman’s “journey” in creating a space where his father isn’t needed and breaking away from toxic relationships. I loved the family dynamics. It was so cute seeing Journey’s family be reunited and how close she was with them.
I do think it needs a bit more editing. There were some typos and confusing sentences, but I assume it’ll be changed before publication. I wish cheating wasn’t such a big aspect of the story. I wasn’t really sure why Roman was even dating Chloe in the first place besides some common ground about their families. It was clear that Roman didn’t like Chloe, so I wished that he broke up with her before acting on his feelings for Journey.
Other than that, this was a wonderful story and I can’t wait to see how the author progresses in her next books. ❤️❤️

Shoot for the Stars is a heart-tugging, feel-good story that’ll have you rooting for these characters from the first page. At its heart, this book is all about Journey and Roman—two athletes juggling the weight of their dreams and the baggage of their pasts.
Journey Young is determined to leave her old life far behind. Her laser focus on winning and burying her past is beyond relatable—you’ll be cheering her on as she sprints toward a fresh start at Glendale Prep. And then there’s Roman, the golden boy with the seemingly perfect life: star athlete, full ride, pretty girlfriend. But beneath that, he’s just a guy desperate for his dad’s approval and dying for those D1 scouts to finally notice him. The emotional stakes for both of them feel real, and you’ll be rooting for these two every step of the way.
What makes this story so special is the rekindling of Journey and Roman’s long-lost friendship. This makes this story more than just about winning the championships and makes it about rediscovering the people who help you remember who you are. Their chemistry feels genuine, and their relationship evolves in a way that feels organic, filled with sweet moments and realistic hurdles.
Shoot for the Stars is a reminder that even while chasing our dreams, love can sometimes sneak in and become part of the victory.
If you’re into books that combine romance, ambition, friendship, and overcoming past trauma—with plenty of heart and a little bit of sass—Shoot for the Stars is calling your name! I ADORE, ADORE, ADORE.
⭐️E-ARC review! ⭐️ ⭐️Thank you so much to the author for an E ARC in exchange for an honest review. ⭐️
“Words can’t describe how much you mean to me, I just want the memories to speak for themself and hope that maybe we can create more together.”
I truly loved this story so much! First I want to give Journey the biggest hug in the world! Journey’s journey and progress throughout the story was beautiful to witness, as the reader I kept hoping and cheering her on with each positive progression! I love the way author humanized her characters (especially Journey) and showed the ups and down of what it is like after processing a SA. The author did an amazing job to break down Journey’s thoughts and hesitancy as she was trying to still continue to live life after a traumatic experience. Roman and Journey were down bad for one another, however I thoroughly enjoyed the slow burn of it all because they came back as friends first then into something more. As a YA book the high school drama added to the story’s plot (which i enjoyed the messy drama😂.) The meaning behind shoot for the stars was adorable and made all the more sense for the novel to be titled as it. I enjoyed the side characters (Melody, Halle, Nigel, & Miles) it shows that grounded friends is always plus to keep you in check and support you and your goals! This is the perfect YA story of telling about found family, support, love, sadness, and overcoming their wildest dreams.
I was so excited to receive this book as an ARC! Thank you so much!
For the storyline, I was so excited as second chance romance is one of my favorite tropes, but this fell very flat for me. You don’t get any real chemistry between Roman and Journey beyond them beyond childhood friends, and reminiscing. I felt as though I was reading the same scenes over and over again. I wish we got to know more about Roman and Journey. I would have loved to see more on Journey’s love of art or Roman’s love of film besides the surface level facts that we were given. This book officially lost me when EVERYONE in the book knew that Roman was cheating on Chloe, except for Chloe. IMO, that was extreme unnecessary to the story line.
As for the writing, there was so much dialogue. We rarely got to see what Roman and Journey were actually feeling or thinking. Every line was just dialogue. There were also many grammatical errors within the writing that made me pause multiple times. Overall, this was not my cup of tea but I am excited to see how the author continues to grow her other books/series!

I had a blast reading this story. There's such a fun set up with the two main characters being both in a rich school on athletic scholarships and working towards the same goals. I also love a childhood-friendship based story. This having them be separated and spent that time apart leading to the questions about their relationship was a new take for me and I enjoyed the way Shoot for the Stars explored that concept.
The only reason it's not a 5 star read for me is because the ARC I received did need another pass with a proofreader's eye, however after reaching out to the author I expect the published copy to have a lot of those mistakes managed when it comes out in early September. I look forward to seeing how this story grows and the JOURNEY it can go on.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you so much to the author for the E-ARC!!!⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book is so cute! It kept me in my feelings. Sports dramas are a fave and the innocence that comes from a YA novel made this one of those books that I didn’t want to put down!
What I loved: - Journey! She truly lived up to her name. I went along on the Journey with her and I loved her evolution throughout the book - Roman! I loved his development. I just want to hug him and shake his father! - Glendale prep, the school background gives me All American Homecoming vibes - Two people figuring it out and supporting each other - I love books where the MMC knows what he wants and is actively pursuing his love without the unnecessary drama
Thank you to Ciana for developing characters you can root for. I loved the book, can’t wait to read more Glendale Prep novels ❤️
Something I really enjoyed about this book is its authenticity. The knowledge in the sports and the way the characters interacted were so refreshing. I also loved that Ciana didn’t leave us hanging when it came to reveals. She delicately wove the plot together and each character served a purpose.
This story follows two childhood friends that reconnect in high school at a football game that Journey is reluctant to attend. With trauma from her past and a laundry list of self doubt, Journey can’t believe her eyes when she spots Roman on the football field.
The two quickly rekindle their friendship, but something more blossoms beneath the surface. As they navigate their struggles and internal trauma, they lean on each other and begin to explore the depths of their relationship.
This was such an affecting YA novel! Journey and Roman childhood friends, years later unbeknownst to each other... now attends the same prep school in a new city. Journey, focused on getting back on track after being physically and mentally abused by her old track coach back home, is struggling to maintain her focus and sanity. Roman, despite being the popular wide receiver, longs for his Dad’s support which is pretty much nonexistent. Journey & Roman eventually cross paths, their friendship is rekindled, and feelings begin to surface. This story follows two individuals longing to fill a ‘void’, learning to accept themselves & who they are, and in the end, also choosing one another.
this was a fun quick read! i loved the pacing and sports aspect!
journey was a delightful character. i feel like the author really did a good job depicting the trauma that her coach left her in, as well as the feeling of lonilness that follows.
now roman wasn’t my favorite character. i don’t mind cheating in stories, but it felt like there was no reason for him to stay with chloe. i also didn’t like how mean he suddenly became during the breakup. but one could say it’s realistic for a football player lol
overall, very fun read! happy i finally got to read it and look forward to more of ciana’s work!

I love Y/A authors. Y/A books literally have me in a chokehold. Then you give me all the things I like friends to lovers, he falls first, supportive friends and family and yes, I'm all in. I like my reviews to be spoiler free. So, I'll just say Roman has the qualities that will take him far. His dad is trash. But his mom and friends are great. Journey, I wish I could hug you. Because her journey to finding herself again was so relatable. I loved her parents and her new friends. I also loved that she went to therapy. And she found her voice. Please check the trigger ⚠️! But this is young love story that is definitely worth the read!
I don't generally read YA, but I gave this one a shot because the cover is so cute and I wanted something different. Journey and Roman are so SWEET in this feel good, second chance romance!! It was a perfect palate cleanser after some of the heavier themes I've been reading in other genres. (Not that this doesn't have any difficult topics, but it's handled really well, IMO.) If you need a romance with characters you will root for and a story you can simply sit back and enjoy, I recommend giving this one a chance.
I found this book from the author’s page and was excited to read it. While it is a YA book I definitely still wanted to see who these characters were. Roman (Rome) and Journey once best friends who lived in the same neighborhood became strangers after Journey’s family moved her to a new town to go to a high school where she would pursue her track goals and leave behind a previous track coach who was trying to SA her.
Starting over never is easy and Journey isn’t fitting in quite yet with her new school or teammates. Struggling to get back to normalcy and not allow her old coach to get to her, Journey battling herself. When she attends a football game she soon learns her childhood best friend is not only a student at her new high school but he’s the star football player. When the two meet again Roman feels he saw a ghost. Years of not knowing what happened to his best friend and now he’s looking at her. But with his new life and girlfriend, there’s no room for Journey in Roman’s world. She sets out to focus on winning the championships so she can prove she’s more than enough not only to her old coach, her old team, but also herself. Rome on the other hand wants to have his old best friend back in his life and wants to know what happened to Journey when they lost contact years ago.
As the school year continues the two are like magnets and find their way back to one another. They slowly pick up where they left off and Journey learns Rome never gave up on them. She also opens up to him about what really happened back at her old school with her coach. To share a very sensitive and traumatic incident with Rome you can tell she trusts him as a friend. The underlying feeling the two have is undeniable but with Rome having a girlfriend Journey wants no problems. Plus she has a championship to focus on winning. It was beautiful to see young Black love unfold and the issues teens often face at their age. Also to rekindle lost friendships and newfound ones was another aspect we see with these two. I love that Journey had support even when she felt alone and that Rome was there to help her heal. Because your past doesn’t define you, especially when what was done to you isn’t your fault. I’m happy Journey was able to not let what her old coach did to her be the reason she give up running track and chasing after her dreams. Very cute YA
I absolutely enjoyed each page of this YA romance! Roman and Journey gave me all the feels, and I’m so happy and excited for others to read their love story! I highly recommend this book to anyone that is testing the waters of sports romance, because this book has changed my past opinions on what this genre is all about!
Thank you Ciana for allowing me to be experience my first ARC! It means the world to me🥹🫶🏽
I liked this YA book with Journey and Roman’s story. They are childhood friends and now go to the same high school and both excel in their given sports. It is a typical teenage story except Journey had an issue with her former coach and Roman had issues with his Dad. I wish those had been fleshed out more in the story. This was a good first read and I look forward to other books by this author.
I really enjoyed Journey and Roman. I liked that they truly pushed hard to be great I’m their respective sports while also rekindling their romance. I legit kicked my feet and felt giddy when they talked/spent time. It was a sweet and romantic read! I’m looking forward to more from the author!
I feel like the bones of a good story were here but unfortunately it was too poorly written for me to continue. I can battle through occasional typos or clunky sentences but this book repeatedly flipped between past and present tense which was very jarring.
I’d be happy to read an edited version but until then suggest you don’t waste your time.
Short & Sweet A beautiful story about overcoming personal challenges and young love. Journey and Roman are the perfect example of listen to your heart and never stop pushing to be the best version of yourself.
Overall the read was a great pace. The story line was fabulous. Characters were unique and not just the typical cookie cutter. I found myself relating to the emotion. However, there were so many grammatical errors. Thank you!
This book reminds me of a 90’s movie about a black young couple. I love every part of this book. He teaches her how she is good enough despite her inner thoughts.
i absolutely adored this wholesome story! i love the characters and their diverse backgrounds and personalities. i was all in for Roman’s and Journey’s love story and how natural their bond felt. personally i do feel like there’s definitely some depth missing from them and some more detail and time could’ve been spent in the scene to show more of the characters connections but for a faster paced read it’s all around perfect <3
