Cristo and the Forbidden Tome is a classic fantasy quest featuring familiar elements—dwarves, mages, and elvesThe story has moments where it flows well, showing promise in the author's writing.

One notable aspect is the writing style. Much of the narration maintains a formal tone, using phrasing like "he did not know" or "he could not remember." However, the dialogue, whole sometimes is formal is a more casual vibe. such as "come over 'ere and I'll explain it." The lack of conjunctions throughout the prose makes for an unusual cadence, which might take some getting used to.

Additionally, all of the characters have the same voice. I couldn't tell any difference from one person to the next.

Cristo & The Forbidden Tome – is one of those titles that tells you exactly what to expect, and then the writing delivers exactly what you ordered, which is always good.
I’m not sure I expected quite as much swearing – this is definitely not recommended for children – but it all felt natural and in-character, not gratuitous.

The story focuses on the eponymous Cristo, a rather dour and slightly ill-tempered dwarf who is frequently exasperated by other races who just don’t do things the ‘proper way’…or, to put it another way, a dwarf. He’s everything one would want a dwarf to be, and yet there’s more to him than that.

He’s a bounty hunter with no qualms about killing, but he still has a moral centre and an endearing fondness for dwarf maids’ comely beards. This leads to a lovely romance with just such a dwarf maid, which I don't think I've ever read before. The dwarven love scene is short (no pun intended) but sweet, and does not go into detail.

When we first meet him, Cristo is working as a teacher, but the adventure really begins when he is sent on a mission to uncover a book (the ‘forbidden tome’) with one clear rule: no killing.

This is a high fantasy world with dwarves, elves and others, besides humans, which let the author get on with storytelling, not get bogged down with too much description. If you’re the kind of fantasy reader that likes an author to paint detailed pictures, you won’t find that here, but for me personally, it was absolutely to my taste. Giving me just enough to identify the characters and understand the important points of the surroundings.

The plot is fast-paced, wasting no time as it moves from scene to scene, which I generally enjoy. However, the slight downside to this was that I didn’t feel as emotionally engaged with the characters as I might have wished. The occasional pause for breath and a little more introspection would perhaps have given this book a bit extra polish.

That’s why, although this book is more than a solid 4 stars (I’d like to give it 4.5) I’m stopping just shy of a 5. But it was close.

If you’re looking for a fun, quick fantasy read, I’d recommend this book, and I’ll happily check out this author’s other work in the future.

Angus Bessai's Cristo & The Forbidden Tome is a captivating fantasy adventure that blends elements of romance, mystery, and action. Set in a world populated by dwarves, elves, and demon spawns, the story follows Cristo, a hardened bounty hunter turned teacher, as he embarks on a quest to recover a stolen ancient tome.

What I Liked:

• Engaging Characters: Cristo is a complex protagonist, haunted by his past and struggling to balance his duties as a teacher with his instincts as a bounty hunter. His interactions with the mysterious dwarven maiden, Aella, add depth and intrigue to the narrative.
• Intricate Worldbuilding: Bessai has crafted a richly detailed fantasy world, filled with diverse cultures, magical creatures, and ancient lore. The descriptions of the city of Alim and its surrounding landscapes are vivid and immersive.
• Fast-paced Plot: The story moves at a brisk pace, filled with exciting action sequences, unexpected twists, and intriguing mysteries. The search for the forbidden tome keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end.
• Humor and Heart: Despite the dark undertones, Bessai manages to inject a healthy dose of humor into the story. The characters' witty banter and humorous situations lighten the mood and prevent the narrative from becoming too serious.

What I Didn't Like:

• Some Predictability: While the plot is generally engaging, there are a few moments where the events feel somewhat predictable. A bit more unexpected twists and turns could have elevated the story.

Overall:

Cristo & The Forbidden Tome is a well-crafted fantasy adventure that offers a satisfying blend of action, mystery, and romance. Fans of the genre will appreciate Bessai's ability to create a compelling world and memorable characters. If you're looking for a thrilling escape, this book is definitely worth checking out.

Really enjoyed this - on the face of it a fun fantasy caper, but backed up with some emotional depth, strong world-building and engaging three-dimensional characters. It's slight, but there's a lot packed in.

Really fun book. Overall I liked it and would recommend to fans of the fantasy genre. It was fast paced. Each chapter was to the point and moved to the next section of the story. You won’t be bored and I liked that. Also on the short side – I think it only took me a few sittings to finish. Books moving that fast usually mean more tell and less show. It was a nice mix – reminded me of fast pace I usually get from childrens/middle grade books but this book is definitely for adults only. If you are expecting a descriptive book, like that from a long fantasy, this probably isn’t for you.

The main character, Cristo, was interesting. A pretty cool dwarf. I’d love to know more about his past and would read a book about how he came to be. Without spoiling the plot, you do follow Cristo around while he tries to determine who stole a tome. The book stands by itself but its definitely one that can be part of a series as well.

It was pretty funny at parts. Overall entertaining and I’d read more books by the author.

Dwarfs. Mages. Manticores. Magic. And Mystery. What more can you ask for in a fantasy read. Quick read.

The book is in the title. Cristo, a dwarf teacher, goes on a magical journey in search of "The Forbidden Tome." With friends and those met along the way, Cristo goes through many adventures in finding the item he's looking for. He even finds "love" along the way.

The author brings you in and keeps the magic happening throughout the entire journey.

Language - might not be suitable for younger children.

I got this as an ARC, and it was a great read.

The author is clearly building up a world here, and excited as they add more to it. Seem like there might be another one he will be releasing soon too. This addition is has a slight romantic twist, but is still full of dark humour like the last one.

Has some old school fantasy that feels fresh. The author is good at packing in a few twists and keeps you on your toes.

Angus Bessai’s Cristo and the Forbidden Tome is an engaging blend of fantasy adventure, mystery, and humor, following the exploits of Cristo, a surly dwarven bounty hunter turned reluctant teacher at the esteemed College of Alim. The novel takes a fresh approach to the fantasy genre, offering a protagonist who’s more comfortable tracking criminals than instructing eager young minds—especially under the strict no-kill policy imposed by the college.

Cristo’s internal struggle is compelling; he’s a hardened warrior seeking refuge after the destruction of his home city, but the academic setting forces him to confront aspects of himself he’s long ignored. However, any hope of respite is short-lived when an ancient and dangerous tome is stolen, thrusting him back into his element—pursuing those who wish to misuse its power. Bessai expertly weaves together intrigue and action, balancing fast-paced chases with moments of introspection that flesh out Cristo’s character beyond the typical gruff dwarf archetype.

Adding a layer of personal conflict is the presence of a dwarven maid with a magnificent beard—an unexpected source of distraction for Cristo. This touch of romance adds warmth and humor, highlighting Bessai’s skill at blending emotional depth with lighthearted moments.

The novel’s world-building is richly detailed, painting a vivid picture of the College of Alim and its eccentric inhabitants. Bessai has a knack for crafting memorable supporting characters, each bringing their own quirks and secrets to the story. The mystery surrounding the stolen tome keeps the pages turning, and the stakes steadily rise as Cristo delves deeper into the College’s hidden underbelly.

Overall, Cristo and the Forbidden Tome is a highly entertaining read for fantasy fans who enjoy a mix of action, humor, and heart. Whether you’re drawn to gruff dwarven bounty hunters, magical academia, or thrilling heists, this book delivers on all fronts.

Cristo, the surly dwarven bounty hunter turned teacher, brings a fresh and entertaining spin to the typical fantasy tale. He’s the last person you’d expect to be teaching at a prestigious magical college like Alim, especially with a strict no-kill order cramping his style. Yet, after the destruction of his home city, he finds himself needing a place to heal and regroup. But, of course, peace and quiet aren't on the cards.

When an ancient tome is stolen, Cristo is tasked with retrieving it, throwing him back into a life of action he’s all too familiar with. What really makes the story stand out, though, is the unexpected humor and heart. The contrast between Cristo’s grumpy demeanor and the whimsical, unpredictable nature of the magical world around him keeps things lively. The challenges of teaching magic, along with his struggles to navigate the complexities of academia, add layers of depth to the character.

On top of the stolen tome and rowdy students, Cristo also has to deal with his fluttering stomach around a certain dwarven maid with a glorious beard. It’s a touch of unexpected romance that adds a sweet dynamic to the story without overshadowing the action and intrigue.

If you’re looking for a story with a grumpy yet loveable protagonist, magical mysteries, and a touch of heart, this book delivers. Cristo’s journey is one I couldn’t put down and left me excited for more!

a unique and entertaining fantasy adventure that offers a fresh take on the genre with its surly yet endearing dwarven bounty hunter turned teacher. Cristo’s unexpected role as an instructor at the magical College of Alim, especially with a strict no-kill order, adds a delightful twist to his character, blending humor with the tension of his past as a hardened bounty hunter. The internal conflict Cristo faces, as he tries to adapt to a peaceful life while being thrust into yet another dangerous mission, makes for a compelling and engaging storyline.

The theft of an ancient tome sets the stage for an action-packed mystery, and Cristo’s pursuit to retrieve it is full of excitement and intrigue. The addition of a dwarven maid with a beard that makes Cristo's stomach flutter brings an unexpected and charming touch of romance, adding depth and relatability to his otherwise gruff personality.

The book masterfully balances adventure, humor, and heart, making it a must-read for fans of fantasy who enjoy strong characters, unique plots, and a bit of romance sprinkled in. Whether you’re drawn in by the magical world or Cristo’s personal journey, this story is sure to captivate and entertain from start to finish. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a fun and engaging fantasy read!

“Cristo & The Forbidden Tome” by Angus Bessai is a fantasy tale with a bit of a romantic element. Trigger warnings for foul language and grisly deaths (the romance is low spice). Cristo is a boorish dwarven teacher at a college. In his usual profession, as a bounty hunter. He has a fierce reputation based upon his past in which he became known as a ruthless killer. But while he is employed as a teacher, he has been ordered by the headmaster to refrain from killing anyone.
But when a valuable and ancient tome is stolen from the headmaster, Cristo is tasked to recover it; the book contains spells that, in the wrong hands, could bring about catastrophic destruction. Cristo sets to the task of finding the stolen book, enlisting the help of a few friends, but his bad-temper can get in the way; he is easily irritated, such as when someone refers to him as a “little thing.” He is also distracted by the charms of a female dwarf, Thotsvilda, who has an enticing…beard.
The cover consists of a sketch depicting four of the characters with just a hint of color. The story is told in 3rd person, past tense, and ought to appeal to readers of fantasy worlds that feature such creatures as elves, magi, and golems.

Cristo & The Forbidden Tome by Angus Bessai is a great read. While at its heart it is a fantasy drama, there are many other elements to this book that makes it universally appealing to readers of other genres.

The main character, Cristo certainly has a taste for murder and fulfills his role as a bounty hunter very well. When he finds himself in front of a group of students, things kind of get crazy – but in a fun way.

His adventure really begins when he is asked to retrieve an ancient book by the headmaster. His bad temper, affinity with swear words and the aforementioned desire to kill at the drop of a hat, leads to a rollicking tale that was a pleasure to read.

Bessai uses many familiar tropes in this book but adds his own special level of creativity that lifts this book above its counterparts. The fact that our protagonist is a bad-tempered dude whose solution to all things involves taking the life out of them and his ‘special interest’ in a female, bearded dwarf only adds to this book’s irresistible charm.

If you are looking to read something in the fantasy genre that will keep you engaged, then this is definitely the book for you. It is certainly a great read, well-crafted by the author.

Enjoyable Read

I borrowed Cristo & The Forbidden Tome by Angus Bessai from the Kindle Unlimited Library and read it using my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

I really enjoyed this story. From the beginning, I felt intrigued by the world and the characters, especially Cristo, who quickly became a favorite of mine. The blend of fantasy elements with Cristo’s unique personality made it a fun and engaging read. I loved the world-building, which felt immersive without being overwhelming, and the way the story unfolded kept me wanting to know more.

The characters were relatable and added depth to the story, and I found myself invested in their journeys. I appreciated how the plot moved along at a good pace, always keeping me hooked. Without giving too much away, the storyline left me excited and curious about what would happen next.

Overall, it was a great read, and keeping an eye on and to reading more from this author!

Reading this book took me back forty-five years. There I was with my friends off on another foray into a dungeon to kill monsters and thence back to my room at the tavern with bags of loot. But this story was even better than playing the game.

In short, Cristo the dwarf is engaged to find a magical tome stolen from the headmaster of the school where he teaches. During this quest, he must fight many a foe and likewise use his innate and learned dwarven senses to complete the task at hand. Many unexpected twists must be dealt with along the way, even a little dwarven romance.

Despite being a relatively short read, Angus Bessai creates a vibrant and interesting world with demon-spawns, elves, humans, orcs, and other D&D creatures. The prose is quick-witted and the protagonist, Cristo, has peculiar speech patterns I absolutely loved.

A thoroughly delightful book. I’ll be reading more of Cristo’s adventures as soon as they become available.

Cristo’s rough edges and no-kill mandate as a professor at a magical college make for an entertaining contrast. The plot’s central mystery of the stolen tome keeps things moving, but it’s Cristo’s inner conflict and his unlikely affection for a dwarven maid that really stand out. The mix of action and humor worked well, though a few parts felt rushed. A solid read with unexpected emotional moments tucked between spells and sword fights! The plot surrounding the stolen ancient tome keeps you on your toes, while the subtle romance adds unexpected warmth. Bessai’s world-building is immersive, though at times, the pacing falters with a few slow spots in the middle. Overall, it’s an entertaining read that balances grit and charm, with a protagonist who’s as tough as he is surprisingly vulnerable.

Another fun edition in the Cristo world (not sure if that is what it is called, but seems to be the way Bessai is naming them).

Bessai has made another broody and fun novella, this time with a little peppering of romance. Nothing saucing, fades to black scenes. Still a lot of swearing and splattering of violence. Great ending that suprised me and hit me in the feels

Continuing my RPG lit bend found this as part of a giveaway and it was a good read. Dark and witty, but with a peppering of romance. I love the fact the female dwarves have beards, this was something i used to see in old fantasy books and hope this might be a resurgence. Its just good solid world building.

Bit predictable ending, but an enjoyable journey.

Protagonist constant 4-letter curse was overdone. It was a crutch to show him as hardcore. Also found use of term man for demon slayer confusing. Action was fast paced and enjoyable.
