Scottish Lasses (Book 3)
Meet the lasses in the world of Mary Queen of Scots...Like the Scottish thistle, they're lovely yet tough, beautiful yet prickly, and only the strongest and wisest heroes are able to elude their thorns to discover the tender blossom within.

MacKenzie's Lass by Glynnis Campbell
Set in the time of Mary Queen of Scots...
A woman with a taste for adventure...a man who knows how to satisfy her hunger. The chef to Queen Mary cooks up fiery romance with a spirited Scottish minstrel at the most controversial banquet in Tudor history.

Tristan MacKenzie, a brilliant chef in the royal household, plans to impress Queen Mary at the baptism feast for her infant son, until an intrepid minstrel, Mery Graham, arrives to stir the pot. A woman's place is definitely not in the kitchen, but daring Mery isn't intimidated by the handsome chef who's whetted her appetite for romance. Mery's impetuousness becomes a recipe for disaster as she begins to fall in love and out of wanderlust. And when insatiable curiosity lands her in the middle of a plot to assassinate the prince, Tristan must risk his life and his future--leaping from the frying pan into the fire--to save the sassy lass who has stolen his heart.

I liked this book, but not quite as much as the first two books in the series.

Tristan is a cook in the queen's household and Mery is a singer in a traveling minstrel troupe. They meet when Mery comes to the castle to perform for the prince's baptism.

Mery is fascinated by Tristan and he with her. She has never met a man that would make her consider giving up her traveling life, until now...

When Mery overhears a plot to assassinate the prince, she turns to Tristan to help her thwart the plot. Mery accidently upsets the assassin's plan, her life is in peril and Tristan will do anything to save her.

Once the assassin escapes, many assume that Tristan has killed him and his boss suggests that he leave the castle. He decides to travel south and seek out the inn of Florie and Rane, he asks Mery if she would be willing to go with him and asks her to hand-fast with him.

Fast forward a year, Mery is very pregnant and she and Tristan are preparing to marry, they have settled in at the tavern/inn owned by Florie, Rane, Jossy and Drew. Tristan is the cook and Mery helps out in the tavern. Just as they marry, all hell breaks loose and a villain from the past again threatens Mery's life.

The story was a nice change of pace from the typical nobles that most historicals focus on, but it was a bit slow at the beginning. I also found the food/music analogies a bit too much.

When all is said and done, this was a good book and I enjoyed it and would be happy to recommend it. It is part of a series, but could easily be read as a stand alone title.

The Cook And The Singer

This is the story of a young up and rising cook and a young woman traveling with a Minstrel group hired to sing for Queen Mary at the Grand Celebration of the Baptism of the newborn baby Prince. Tristan MacKenzie never thought he would find someone like Mery Graham. She was beautiful and talented and could have her pick of men. When she picked him he assumed she only was interested in bedding him and moving on. Mery wasn't that kind of girl though. She was tired of the vagabond lifestyle and when she saw him for the first time she knew she wanted to spend the rest of her life with this handsome talented well respected man. Her heart almost best out of her chest when he was near and she chased him till she caught him.
After the performance by the troupe every one left the banquet hall and Meri was thirsty and drank from the little gold cup left on the table. Little did she know it was the Prince's cup and was poisoned by a spy wanting to stop Queen Mary's son from becoming the next King of England. Meri would have died without Tristan's quick recognition of the poison and his knowledge of what would purge her of it. She lay close to death when he realized he was in love with her.
This is a sweet love story of two innocent young people who living their lonely lives met and fell in love. It also ends bringing together the characters from the previous two books in this series living out their lives together. I love seeing the connections come together and really enjoyed all three books.

Yes a five!

When I give a story a five, it deserved it! Because I’m hooked on romance novels I want some good romance. But I really don’t like it without adventure and drama. Boy did this book have all three!

Loved this medieval romance between Tristan, the royal cook for Queen Mary, and Mery, a songstress singing for the royal infant's baptism. Rich details bring the castle to life, and the steamy scenes between the lovers are as satisfying as the sumptuous dishes prepared for the royal court!
