I enjoyed this book, although again, there was a lot of fighting involved. What struck me, were a few inconsistencies (I noticed in the last volume, too, but then forgot all about it again).
The Revenants are dead, and as such, don't bleed -- except when they do. I wonder that no editor seems to have noticed that they either bleed, or they don't. You can't really have it both ways, although admittedly, having your heroes covered in blood (which isn't their own) adds to the dramatic effect. ;-)

Ok, so. James Maxwell has ripped off every single fantasy author who has ever written. I was sitting counting them off on my fingers as I read. J.K. Rowling, Philip Pullman, Ursula Le Guin, he's got them all! However, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and this guy is clearly a fantasy buff. He has written an homage to the genre, and poured all his love into it. For that, I applaud him. Yes, these books are poorly characterised and predictable, but they are written with admiration pouring from their spines. Give them a go if you want to read a love letter to fantasy.

Absolutely marvellous! I was riveted all the way through.
I went through so many emotions. The book is well written with fantastic characters who aren't transparent and have a lot of depth.
I actually felt very sad when I finished it purely because that's the end, over, finite :(
I didn't think I could find a fantasy series that's on a par with Feist's Magician series, but I hit the mother lode with James Maxwell.
I would highly recommend this four book saga, it is riveting!

Series review. It follows all the fantasy troupes without fail, including the villain telling the "damsel in distress" his plans, so the she can save the day. It wasn't very imaginative. The entire series is like the with virtually no surprise.

The saving grace is the world. I really liked the magic system that was used. Even that turned into a cliché.

Good introductory book to fantasy or casual reading, but not one for an advanced reader.

I don't know that I liked this book better than the other three, but I'm going to go ahead a five star this one. I loved all the houses coming together to fight evil. By this book I was totally invested in the series, I've gotten to know the world and the characters, I was happy with the wrap-up of it all, and I'll look back on this series very fondly!

... notes for ME

Book 1: Introduces the world, mainly Altura/Enchanters to start. The Lexicons, essence, the Tingarian Empire, the war, a bit of the Evermen. Follow Ella and Miro mostly, also Killien, Amber and others. Love triangle Ella, Killian, Prince Ilathor. The primate wanting a world of unity, w/o lore, the "taint" and the black army, refugees, the ultimate confrontation.

Book 2: The war continues. Essence running low. More background on the houses. Pick up on what happened to Rogan and Amber in addition to Miro, Ella, Killian, Evenstar, Primate Melovar. Introduction of "the hidden relic" ... Ella and Shari kidnapped. Introduction of the exiled Akari. Hazara conquers Petrya by freezing the boiling lake. Miro's attack, liberation of Halaran (colossi, ironmen, enchanted bows ... the resistance). Akari's army of the dead, the Sentinal in Seranthia. Confrontation at the portal. Killian goes through ... epilogue, someone comes out ...

Book 3: Sentar/Lord of the Night. Miro and Amber's wedding. Miro and Amber's quest, discovery of new lands, trials getting back home. Ella's quest to rescue Killian, discovering WHO Killian is. Uniting the land, war coming, essence again flowing.

Book 4: All the lands banding together to fight the "Lord of the Night" and his army of the dead. Anticipating and prepping for attack. The final battles.

WARNING SPOILERS!

I have only one criticism of this book, and its kind of a bad one, and a spoiler. But other than that it was a really good conclusion to an amazing series!

Overall, I felt the series started relatively strong. It doesn't break much new ground, but really appreciated how the world was put together.

As the books went on, though, I felt like they stagnated. Problems were foreshadowed, raised and resolved in record time, without being exploited to their full potential, some almost felt like filler. Plot developments were predictable, and the characters continued to act as they did in previous books, with limited development. It was somewhat of a struggle by the end, but I had likely the earlier books enough that I wanted to finish the series.

The final book in the series was packed with action as our favourite characters are pitted against the Revenants. They know they are coming and they know how they are going to come just not when or where, so an elaborate signal system is put in place in order to let everyone know where they attack first, in the hope that help can be sent.

LORD OF THE SKY I LOVE THIS SERIES! I listened to the audio books on kindle unlimited and it was amazing. I'm so sad it's over. I need to buy them, re-read them and place them on my bookshelves as little amazing trophies.
I do highly recommend this book and series!

The fantasy quartet wraps up in satisfying fashion.

Everything has been leading up to the climactic battle between the Big Bad Guy and the Good Guys, and author James Maxwell doesn’t disappoint. The final battle gets pretty chaotic, as he jumps around to various plot lines running simultaneously, but I guess all battles are chaotic. He then concludes the story lines for each of the many major characters, and it all comes together nicely.

Final installment in the Everman saga and James Maxwell brought the battle for Soranthia to us with incredible detail and imagery. This story finds our heroes Miro, Ella, Killian and Amber gathering forces and resources to fight the powerful bad guy Sintar Sithrith and his army of previously dead soldiers. The world of dirigibles, constructs, orbs, essence, runes and zen blades all get extensive page time as battles are fought, some won and some lost, across the empire. We see our heroes acting heroically and some don’t survive. My biggest criticism of this series is the lack of depth of the characters but the battles, both large offensives and the hand to hand combat, are expertly detailed. Enjoyable reading for fantasy sci-fi fans.

I would say I definitely enjoyed this one the most in the series. I loved seeing all the nations come together to fight, that we got main characters and leaders who hadn't really met coming together. It was extremely satisfying for so much of the lore to get built upon and tie in to new creations and to the big moments or revelations.

Personally I found the ending extremely satisfying. I appreciated that James seem to understand that happy endings are cool!

I did have a couple of small gripes with the writing; there's a lot of repeated descriptions of character's physical appearance (we don't need to hear about the blood red hair/long blonde hair/scar on his face etc every time we see them!) . Also I could do without the love triangle thing that got played more heavily in this one. I thought it was a shame that Ella's non-love life got so much focus in the downtime from fighting when we could have had some focus on the couples/families actually together.

There were some moments I did really love in addition to the aforementioned ones, and the wording itself really added something extra to really pull emotions from me. I thought the trust and friendships between the characters really shone in this book. I also really loved the way that with each book the battles had a new element to them, we still saw lore and weapons from the old ones but this time we had something more (that really helped keep them interesting when they could have felt too repetitive). I think it's also really telling of a good writer for characters who are lost along the way to be properly mourned and/or have their deaths be more than just a one line moment. It really makes them feel like heroes and for many it actually made their deaths not feel sad because their character arc had had a wonderful ending.

Everything was tied up really well in the end, and that can't have been easy with so many strands and characters and such intricate lore in this universe! The characters had wonderful moments which concluded the story for us but also it felt like they were getting their reward and the life they wanted, like they had more to come but this time joys and wonder.

An epic conclusion to an epic fantasy series, but too much battle and death

That was an epic conclusion to an epic fantasy series. Most of it consisted of battles all across Merralya, constant fighting and death and destruction, lots of descriptive, gory battles fighting hordes of revenants, where the only way to defeat them is dismemberment and decapitation. Actually, I'm sick of reading about all these gory battles and will not be starting another series like this for a while. One can only handle so much blood and guts and death. Time for something light and happy again...

The world building, magical system, and storytelling of The Evermen Saga are excellent. I wish I could learn more about lore and alchemy with Ella and discover all the things that can be done when the houses' lores are reunited. So fascinating! I want to see more of the other houses in their homelands and how they differ from Altura or Tingara, the major settings throughout the series. I also want to see how Veldria and the other civilizations across the Great Western Ocean are rebuilt and if they'll continue to share and have contact across the ocean in the future. Okay, maybe I need a follow-up book or novella.

But there is also a lot of war and injuries and death, some explicit bedroom scenes and nudity (especially in book 1), and other uncomfortable topics like rape, execution, gangs, assassination, addiction, and other violence and crimes. They're very heavy most of the time, with not a lot of reprieve, especially in book 4 with the constant fighting from one battle to the next until almost everyone is dead on both sides and you genuinely don't know how they're actually going to win the war and wrap this up with 5% of the book left... *Gasp* I'm exhausted from this series!

So it has been tough for me to rate the books in this series. I think most of them ended up with 4 stars because it was just too much for me sometimes, but the story and magic system were so good that it was enough to keep it from dropping any lower. Based on my personal preference for all these things, I just couldn't give them 5 stars when I felt that way.

Another excellent action packed book. I imagine epic war scenes as the details are laid out. I would love to see this series become movies like The lord of the Rings series. The characters are richly detailed and there are many heroes to root for.

They know the evil is coming. Will they be prepared to fight in time? There is a legion of the dead, Revenants, that are driven by a god hell bent on making them all slaves for the war machine he plans to use to take over every world he encounters. There is one who is much like the evil god. Killian has gained much of the same powers and intends to protect his people. Will he be strong enough?

Ella has encountered loss all through her life. All she has left is Miro, her brother. When she tentatively reaches out to share her feelings with Killian, disaster strikes and they are sent on their separate paths. Are they really separate though?

Death and loss surround them all but out of this epic war is born an epic hero I never expected.

I am burning through this series. Okay, so it helps that they are on audio and I do a lot of driving for my job, but still... Anyway, this is another amazing story by James Maxwell and read by the brilliant Simon Vance. Some people might not appreciate the long battle scenes, but what I realized as I listened is that James is such a brilliant writer, that I'm actually visualizing these scenes in my head like a movie. A fun, fantastic movie. His world, his magic, his detail, the action, the somewhat predictable but exciting plot, kept me listening to every word. That doesn't always happen when I'm driving and listening. I sometimes wander. Not with this series. I love his characters and have enjoyed watching them grow and mature. This one has one plot twist at the end that I NEVER saw coming, so the predictability isn't totally predictable. If you like fantasy and magic and strong characters, both male and female, you will enjoy this series. If you have the luxury of listening to the audio version, I highly recommend it. Simon Vance is pure brilliance.

A thrilling conclusion to an excellent fantasy series! All of the houses must band together to stop the Lord of the Night and his army of revenants. Between non-stop military action, treachery, and romance, this book has a little bit of everything and was a lot of fun to read. I only wish we got to see a little more of Ella and Killian together.

I felt Maxwell did a good job in wrapping up the series nicely. Sometimes I feel series endings can be too abrupt, but this one gave us a good idea of what all my favorite characters will be up to in the future. And the scene at the very end was fantastic! I laughed out loud to the point where my boyfriend started giving me funny looks :-).

Overall, I really recommend this series to young adult and adult readers alike. And particularly to fans of Cinda Williams Chima's Demon King series or Jim Butcher's Codex Alera.

If you love war books this is for you. Pretty much 80% battle scenes. Very enjoyable read! If it wasn't for the last 5% I would have given it 5 stars. The ending was weak, he had a lot of threads to finish off and did it very poorly. It seemed rushed and thoughtless. Maxwell spent 4 books building up a relationship between Ella and Killian and wrapped it up in one page, big let down I say.
The ending was super tacky, but if you stop reading after Ella, Miro and Amelia all talk with Rogan on his death bed then you will have a great read on your hands.

Best of the four, but..

I was so annoyed at how often Ella was told she needed to talk to Killian. Like bro (literally because, Miro) let her live her life. If she wants to choose eternal knowledge over a silly boy then let her!

Towards the end of this book I was getting pretty sad. It was almost like GoT in terms of everyone you like or you’re rooting for, dying.
However, everyone’s fate was neatly tied up. There was a nice surprise at the very very end that I enjoyed of someone I liked who survived.
I know this series is biased around two world wars essentially, so I know people are bound to die. I can’t speak from knowledge, but I feel the author either experienced, or did a lot of homework on war. There was a lot of realistic scenes that made me so sad.

Now that I’m writing this I realize someone’s fate wasn’t wrapped up. We know the bad guy from the first two books died in the essence. But then his conscience was still in the pool and he left the statue and created the deep ruin of the stairs leading up to the portal. But what happened to him after that? Did he just evaporate?
Yes small fish, but I’m still curious.

I also enjoyed that there was a whole other continent that didn’t have lore. I wonder what they thought when they went to Altura.
It’d be interesting having a series from the perspective of someone from that continent. Maybe them growing up without lore and with gunpowder and alchemy, then the rise of the Lord of Night, then their flight to Altura and starting a life there. Or being the one to travel back to their homeland and rebuild.

I need more!

This book annoyed me a little I am not going to lie, it felt like we were repeating a lot of the events from earlier books - splitting up the key players, some of them being in mortal danger whilst trying to save others from mortal danger, POVs ending on a cliffhanger only to be left behind... it just felt a bit annoying.

Amber especially was irritating. She has all the makings of being a strong character, but when she gets to show this is usually when she is in a highly vulnerable position and it's male characters that are in a dominant position to her. Yes sometimes she does rescue herself, but a lot of the time she's just damned lucky.

Ella feels somewhat like a Mary Sue at this point, and there's a couple of points here I was able to work out her actions pretty much down to the wording used. The love triangle that she was part of also has one of the easiest resolutions ever, and honestly was boring. The love interests in this have very little actual chemistry with each other.

Character fates are mentioned once then never again, other characters seem to have Wolverine's healing ability... I'm glad I finished reading this series but I'm also glad these last two books were borrowed from Kindle Unlimited and I am also unlikely to knowingly return to the author again in the future.

I LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH!! seriously though, the world building in here is just chef's kiss! I have to admit I didn't get too attached too some characters, and I didn't really ship Miro and Amber, but that doesn't mean I like these books any less. And while I didn't connect to these characters as much as in other books, i have to say I did feel as if they left a lasting impression on me.
I was thinking of recommending this to my younger sister, but there are some NSFW scenes in the first two books (if I remember correctly) that I don't think she should read yet. I do like how they were interwoven in the story and weren't completely raw nsfw, giving the story a nice touch.
Note: i haven't started another book since finishing this one 2-3 days ago because I still feel like I have to digest it haha. Not because it's hard to read or anything, but because I didn't want it to leave my mind so fast.
