Having a rich English ancestry that can be traced back to the 1500s, BARBARA PIERCE credits her grandmother and the romantic family tales she was told as a child for inspiring her early fascination with English history.

Se avete letto la saga Bedegrayne questo non ha niente a che vedere con essa in quanto rappresenta il romanzo d'esordio di quest'autrice.
Ho letto questo romanzo perché conoscevo l'autrice e perché sono rimasta affascinata dalla trama quindi incuriosita e piena di aspettative ho cominciato la lettura di questo libro.
Lo stile è scorrevole ed elegante ma per quanto riguarda la trama sono rimasta leggermente delusa soprattutto per quanto riguarda la risoluzione del mistero della morte del marito e della suocera (trattato in modo frettoloso e relegato alle ultime pagine). L'autrice si è concentrata molto sulle lotte interiori dei personaggi principali: Tessa prova attrazione verso Reave a cui ha raccontato un sacco di bugie per cui vive con la costante paura che possa scoprirla e denunciarla considerato che è un'avvocato ed è stato incaricato di trovare le prove che accusino proprio lei. Al contrario Reave non ha un passato molto felice ed ora si ritrova in casa una donna dal passato misterioso. Immaginate quali pensieri agitano l'animo del protagonista: fidarsi o non fidarsi?
Il periodo Regency fa da sfondo alla storia e anche se è il mio preferito qui si mostra per il suo lato più brutto: l'aristocrazia che condanna senza aver prove concrete, allontanamento di coloro che si professano amici della protagonista, la pazzia, i lati oscuri dei matrimoni combinati, il voltafaccia della famiglia stessa e potrei andare avanti.
Il livello di sensualità si allinea un po' a quello che è il contenuto ovvero poco romantico e molto passionale.
Più che Londra è la campagna il luogo dove si svolge gran parte della vicenda anche perché è Reave ad allontanarsi spesso.
Devo confessare che alcune situazioni mi sono sembrate superflue rendendo il romanzo a tratti noioso così l'unica consolazione che mi rimane é sperare nel prossimo libro...
