“It's funny how one day can make so much difference. July 20th was that kind of day for me.” So begins the first-person story of Johnny Pierce, a fifteen-year-old in a small suburban town.

Johnny just gets by in school, likes to bowl, has his ups and downs with his folks—then suddenly, on that July 20th, he finds himself in really serious trouble with the police. Why? Johnny asks himself, and the book is his search for an answer.

Along the way, Johnny takes a hard look at his family—his striving father, always on call for business; his younger sister with her “spells” that put the whole family on edge; his kid brother, claiming— and getting—more than his share of attention.

Johnny takes an even harder look at himself. Why was he drawn to Mick and his gang? Did he really have such a great time with them? And whom has he hurt most by his actions—his family or himself?

Johnny finds no easy answers, but he does come to a better understanding of his situation. And readers who get to know him are likely to feel he is somebody special—even though Johnny himself denies it.
