Shane MacDougall is the pen name for Stoker award winning horror writer, Jonathan Maberry. The book is a look at the folk lore of vampires and other related supernatural predators from all over the planet. Don't expect to find your tuxedo wearing bloodsuckers in here. What you will find are myths and legends from all over. Those things that go bump in the night in China, as well as in Chile. Also noteworthy I thought was the artwork included in the book. The representations added a lot the flavor.
This book is great. It discusses the mythology of Vampires, Zombies, and Ghouls from every corner of the planet. Since the legends are arranged geographically, I had a lot of fun skipping around to read about the undead in different parts of the world. It also tells how they are created, and how they are destroyed. I'm not a fan of Buffy, so I was surprised to learn that Vampire Slayers actually existed and were paid to rid villages and towns of monster trouble. I can't say enough good things about this book, so whether you're interested in mythology or just like vampires, pick it up.
