So this books is getting a very mixed review.

This book might be the most aesthetically beautiful book I own. The cover art, page layout, borders and images scattered throughout are faultless. It's nicer even than some of the showpiece coffee table style books I've seen at family gatherings.

Sadly despite the many prestigious references listed in the back of the book i.e. NASA, the Smithsonian, Encyclopedia Britannica etc. I would be hard pressed to recommend this book as reference material due to some... err... problems with accuracy. I'm not claiming to be any tremendous expert on magic, but when you say that Artemis' brother is Helios and than that Apollo is the Roman version of Helios... Holy fact check Batman... I know that myths can be inconsistent and vary from region to region leading to confusion, but I couldn't find a source where Helios is not the Titan personification of the sun and Artemis' twin is not Apollo. Helios' Roman name is Sol and Apollo gets to keep his Greek name unchanged. Seeing this led me to doublecheck other things I was unsure of which led me to page 104 where the Author claims that Eliphas Levi (Alphonse Louis Constant) the magician who played a large part in turning Tarot from card game to divination tool was a Catholic Priest when according to all of the sources I checked he abandon his path towards Priesthood, having only been ordained as a Deacon and allowed employment as a preacher, before branching off into mysticism and getting married. Why Kane decided to claim he was an ordained Priest I can't do more than guess.

On the other hand the fact that the author on several occasions directs her readers to seek actual healthcare professions before ingesting certain herbs, steers her readers with respiratory sensitivities away from burning strong smoky herb, advises good fire precautions and dedicates a WHOLE DAMN page to essential oil safety I am pretty endeared towards her.

The bulk of this book is kinda just positive affirmations and cute mantras with a veneer of I guess kinda harmless spirituality.

Unfortunately given that I bought this( along with a handful of other new age books) as reference material for research purposes the errors I found make this not a terribly useful book. Not bad enough to be tossed and completely dismissed, but given the time consuming cross referencing I'm just not comfortable recommending.

I feel this book relies too much on its aesthetic, which is impressive, truth be told, but neglects the content sometimes. While there are useful tips, incantations (mostly incantations) and rituals included, along with a good introduction on the subject of Moon magic, it is a bit confusing, for example, to read about eight phases of the moon and then see the author explain only for, or divide the magical works she includes in said four phases. Good introduction, but it could have been better.

The contents of Moon Magic are pretty basic, an overall summary of Moon lore and phases, spells, crystals, herbs, and so on that all correspond to witchcraft that's moon-related. Nothing in-depth, this is more of an overview of everything, just convenient to have it all in one place, rather than have anything in-depth. It's a good starting point or an overview manual, but if you're looking for anything detailed, definitely look elsewhere.

However, that being said, its aesthetics make it more than appealing to have on your shelves, and just going through the pages was a relaxing experience. I'm happy to have this to refer to, and even just to re-browse for when I'm looking for something in particular. A beautiful read.

A book that could've greatly benefited from an editor, or maybe someone who knows mythology better. I picked up immediately that the author had intended to quote Wikipedia.

"Selene was often identified with Artemis, much as her brother, Helios, was identified with Apollo."

She misinterpreted this sentence from Wikipedia as Helios being Artemis' brother, instead of it explicitly stating that Helios is Selene's brother—which is correct.

Instead she wrote: “Artemis: Closely associated with the Full Moon (her brother, Helios, was the Sun god) [...]" How are you going to educate people on something you yourself aren't even educated on?

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

This book is a beautifully put together book of information about the different stages of the moon, different cultures/historical beliefs and rituals of the moon, and spells. This book also covers star signs and the best essential oils to use and when to use them, as well as covering information about crystals to use during certain moon cycles.
I really enjoyed this book and am going to get a paper copy at some point too.

I’ve always had an affinity to the moon.

When tears would course down my eyes and trail tracks down my cheeks I would wish not upon the stars but pray to that crescent sliver or that glowing orb.
When my maternal grandmother died years ago that night I sought comfort and in the dark I felt her embrace in the sky. The streetlights flickered and went out but the glow from above lit my way back home.

Yes, the moon harnesses plenty of power.

There’s magick in its grip and within holds thousands , no millions of secrets.
I guess you would call me a fledgling witch. I dabble in beginners witchcraft from time to time and have for a few years. I don’t pretend to be more experienced than I am because I simply am not. I do this for me and my peace of mind.

To me magick is akin to self love and positive affirmations. It’s a push to help you along the way.

With this book we learn about the moon phases and how they can affect the power we harness and what we can do during these certain phases.

For example during the new moon this is a time to set intentions.

As an affirmation you will light a pink candle and and say: I welcome new opportunities and experience.

I’ve also always wondered about the various names for the moons during the different months. Like for example WHAT THE HELL IS A BEAVER MOON??? WELL HERE:

Many cultures idolizle the moon and many Goddesses are associated with her power. Luna, Selene, Artemis, Ixchel, Kuan Yin, Isis…

There’s also my favorite…SPELL WORK INVOLVING HERBS.

You guys, I love herbs. I love learning about the different uses and what they can do for us. This summer I actually did a full moon spell with my best friend.

I adored this book. I love having books like this not so much to guide me but to be a blueprint as a sort.

Magick is everywhere. This is just but a taste of it, it’s literally floating above us. We can draw on our affirmations from inside of ourselves. I think for me magick shows us that we are not alone and we have never been alone.

Anything is possible and the impossible is extraordinary.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this copy of my ARC.

Firstly, smudging is a Native American tradition and should not be used in wiccan practices. Secondly, weight loss spells can kiss my ass. Give me body positive spells instead. That's all.

I got a cut-down version of the original as part of a bundle from 5 below. Considering this book cost me about $2 with sales tax, it's rather good. Not perfect though. I found a typo and one image was the wrong moon phase the book was discussing. Also, this author used the term smudging multiple times. She recognized that it came from Native Americans but failed to understand the term is for a very specific ritual from a closed religion, and therefore, is not the same as the smoke cleansing described in the book. Furthermore, the author draws a connection that makes it sound as though these indigenous people learned the technique from ancient Egyptians. Incredibly false statement.
All that said, I did find some good spells in this little book. I love having specific rituals sectioned out for each moon phase. As a lunar witch, this is very helpful in expanding my knowledge on correspondences.
I am curious to read the full version of this book. Maybe one day I will get lucky and find it in a used book store or at a library.

Moon Magic by Aurora Kane

Interesting look at the moon that includes information about various cultures’ beliefs about the moon, moon deities of these cultures, ways to embrace or draw the goddess into oneself, use of the moon in working magic and various ways to use crystals, herbs, rituals and tarot while working magic. This book has basic information to build on and plenty to learn for the novice and would be a good source to refer to as one works their way through the year. I think the one big idea that I would be interested in trying is to find candle holders in a rainbow of colors to use instead of colorful candles…the candleholders could be used with intent just as candles are chosen for their specific color for a specific ritual…and they would be pretty on an altar or anywhere when not being used for magical purposes.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Wellfleet for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Moon Magic by Aurora Kane is a beautifully written guide to harnessing the power of the moon. Kane walks you through each lunar phase, showing how to set intentions, work with energy, and embrace transformation. The book is packed with spells, rituals, and tips for celebrating Esbats, making it practical for beginners while still inspiring for experienced practitioners.

The writing is accessible, the design is magical, and the content feels both ancient and modern. If you’re drawn to lunar energy or want to bring more ritual and intention into your life, this book is a must-read. 🌙✨

I'm trying to research different kinds of magick to figure out what kind I want to work on after I get more experience on protection magick. Moon magick looked interesting, so I decided to pick the book up. I will be writing the information down in my grimoire when I get the time. In my opinion, the book was pretty helpful, but it also sort of focused on the design as well.

[Book Review] Moon Magic: A Handbook of Lunar Cycles, Lore, and Mystical Energies, by Aurora Kane

Hardcover, 192 pages. It's a very pretty book, with an embossed cover, thick pages, and sewn binding.

Cultural Appropriation (CA): The author recommends a smudging ritual (not the Medicine, but the usual smoke cleansing variant), and never even mentions the Romani while discussing the history of tarot.

Trans-friendly: No. There's much to do about the moon being a goddess, which is fine. Trans women are women & I wouldn't be surprised if any moon goddess is trans herself (she is the epitome of transformation & finding yourself). However, when talking about menstruation, the author makes a point of referring to it as the "female menstruation cycle."

Citation needed: The author has a tendency to make sweeping statements like "people believe" or "in ancient cultures" without naming her sources.

Moon magic: The book starts by explaining what kind of magic resonates with the moon phases. It's basic, but good information. Then there's several chapters about what crystal/herb/color/tarot/astrology to use while invoking that magic. And... is that moon magic, or is that crystal/etc magic? It's not bad information, but it's a little bit of everything and pretty surface level.

Then we move to 70 pages of moon magic rituals and spells. These were good, but mostly chants (so beware if that isn't your thing). Again, a lot of it was very basic, but there were a couple things I can adapt and use in my own spells.

Do I recommend it? No, mostly because the CA and transphobia are deal-breakers to me. Which is a pity, because otherwise it would make a perfectly fine bit-of-everything book for the beginning witch. Experienced witches are unlikely to find much of value here.

"Moon Magic" by Aurora Kane is a wonderful reference book to use when working with the moon phases. In this book you will find many useful ways to include essential oils, crystals, tarot, the zodiac, and herbs into your moon rituals. Each has its own reference chart and some include spells and affirmations to use during each of the moon phase.

A history of goddesses from different cultures and their association with the moon can be found in the book as well and this can be very helpful when deciding which one to ask for guidance from during your rituals.

In the back of the book is a section of several rituals and spells for each of the new moon, waxing moon, full moon and waning moon phases. For those of you wanting to use the power of the moon during your spells, this book is the perfect place to start.

Not only is the knowledge in this book an extremely helpful tool for instructing you on the many ways to include the power of the moon and its many phases into your practice, but the cover is just so beautiful, I am very excited to be adding "Moon Magic" by Aurora Kane to my book collection.

Aurora Kane brings us this delightfully illustrated and utterly tantalizing look at lunar energies.

This book would actually be a great introduction to magic in general, if read in tandem with other, similar works. You might be surprised by that, since the topic is so specific (the Moon).

Yet, the author runs a good gamut through many Craft basics, including working with herbs, crystals, and essential oils. There’s a lack of detail about where the correspondences originate, but focusing on the way she relates it all back to the Moon makes it better.

I do need to note that Kane mostly focuses on the Moon as a feminine entity though. In my own practices, I approach the Moon as the Goddess Diana, but other folks from other traditions may see things differently, or even venerate a masculine lunar divinity.

There’s a large section in this book on Moon Goddesses, but precious little about Gods with similar associations. It would’ve been nice to explore some of that. The section on the Goddesses is quite thorough and descriptive, if not exactly comprehensive.

Unfortunately, Kane tends to push neoWiccan ethics fairly hard. References to “do no harm, “an it harm none,” and the notion of karma show up in the book occasionally. At one point, Kane suggests that witchcraft has “no rules” besides “do no harm,” and even if you remove the latter part of that statement, it’s debatable how true it is.

I personally don’t believe in karma, nor do I subscribe to the Wiccan Rede or a notion of the threefold law. Kane describes these ethical perspectives as if they were universal among witches, and that is a bit troubling.
I don’t think it ruins or takes away from the book too much, though. This might be because, growing up in the 1990s, most of the books I was able to find included similar statements, and I was still able to learn plenty from them.

This sounds odd coming from a digital fiend like me, but if you decide to get this book, get a hard copy. The Kindle edition is fine and all, but the graphics are much more stunning in the print copy.

I have both, and while the Kindle edition (from Netgalley) was well-formatted, the graphics on a screen don’t really compare to how beautiful they look physically printed!

Overall, I give this book four out of five stars. There were some flaws, explained above, but mostly, reading this was an enjoyable and relaxing experience that helped me draw closer to the Moon.

Description
Harness the power of the magical, mystical, glorious Moon with more than 100 spells, chants, and rituals, along with Esbat celebrations for the Full Moon. Moon Magic is the third book in the best-selling Magic series, following Witchraft and Love Magic. The Moon is one of our most prominent and ancient symbols. It has shaped how we understand and track time, its movement controls the tides, and its rise into the sky signals the coming of night. All of these roles have cemented our relationship with the Moon and its important place in our myths and culture. The distinct phases of the lunar cycle have associations with different states of being. These states mirror a kind of spiritual quest which, like our search for ourselves, never ends. When we observe the Moon, we see reflections of the grand pattern of life that is birth, death, and rebirth. With this invaluable handbook, follow the Moon as she traverses each sign of the zodiac and discover how each astrological phase affects magic—and how your personal Moon sign affects your magical work. The discussions include the influence of the seldom-discussed energies of the True-Blue Moon, the Black Moon, the Void of Course Moon, and the lunar eclipse. You will learn how to properly conduct spells using candles and gemstones at exactly the right lunar moment to enhance the flow of power. Each Moon phase is explored individually to cover the phase's main themes along with moon rituals, intention setting, and practical ways to celebrate and manifest health, wealth, and confidence. You'll also find herb and crystal lists as they relate to each moon phase and information on traditional lunar herbs, including lavender, jasmine, willow, moonwort, mug wort, pumpkin, and sandalwood.

MY REVIEW:
I have to start by saying thank you for this ARC as it is definitely a magical book. It is very well written and easy to follow whether you are a novice or an expert. The author takes you on a magical trip through crystals, herbs and spell casting. Learned a lot from this book and am so happy I read it.

I highly recommend this book!!! Buy it, you will not be disappointed.

a beautiful book of basics with useful information as well as glaringly obvious errors. (other reviews explain those things well!) i'm not into annotating books, but i put lots of page flags in this one so i can easily locate things for myself.

if you're looking for spells using herbs, oils, candles, crystals, etc...some of that is here. but if you like using someone else's words to focus your intentions or like to use little mantras and affirmations, this is definitely your book. most of the "spells" are just things to say and don't go too much into prep, opening/closing, centering, etc. so again, if that's your thing, this is your book.

i've been out of the loop with magic(k) books for years, so it'll be a lot of trial and error for me! things that focus on herbs, oils, and just scented things and allergens in general just won't be useful to me. but i'd like to learn more about crystals, tarot, etc. things that don't require an open flame, going out in nature regularly, opening windows to let things out/in (bc it's just pollen to me lol), scented things, anything touching my skin... yeah anything but that is what i'll likely look into.
if you've randomly found my review...hi! if you want to leave me any recommendations, i'd really appreciate it!! if not, hi anyway! i usually read fiction (SFF mainly), but i want to start recording other stuff i read as i delve back into my somewhat slightly magical journey = )

2.5 stars. I was prepared to like this book and purchase it, but...please don't sprinkle glitter outside when you dance in the moon! It's very bad for the environment, for animals and for people. It may sound cute but it's a really bad idea. The value of the penny is nonexistent in Canada so maybe don't do a money spell with pennies and if you bury the coins make sure it's not anywhere near a water source. Also I strongly recommend that unless smudging is a family tradition don't do it. Stealing other peoples practises is never okay and you should only incorporate practises that have been given to you by someone that has a tradition of this practise. Unfortunately, wicca/witchy types have a history of cultural appropriation and always claim it's respectful when they do it. Well unless it has been given to you it's not respectful and it's cultural appropriation. Wicca/witchy types do not do enough of calling out fellow practitioners about cultural appropriation. It's an okay book overall once I got to the end.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It has inspired me to try out some new Moon spells, but it is riddled with inaccuracies and incomplete information.
Someone else here went through Kane's confusion with their Greek & Roman Gods, Goddesses, and Titans and I don't know nearly enough about that to be insightful. What I do know about is creating an alter and not having protections. Don't do it. An alter is a portal and anything can come through unless you set up wards, protections, and vet all the spirits or deities coming and going. If you are doing spells or making Moon Water you need to state your intentions out loud or else it is just not going to work. I am sure there was more but these are just what I remember so always make sure you double check and verify your information.
Besides the above this book is a good place to start. It's not 100% accurate and it is incomplete but there were a few good ideas that could add to your practice. That being said please reach out to a local pagan community and read more before attempting any of these spells.

This is a phenomenal book. I thank the publisher and Net Galley for the opportunity. This is a book to buy in hard copy to add to your magical library. My review opinion is my own.

Beautifully crafted, this is the "definitive" book on utilizing Moon Magic into your practice. The author has meticulous details in the moon cycles, tracking lunar magic, using spells and when to best preform them and the use of essential oils in your craft. The author has also included affirmations, crystal magic that relates to the moon, energies, herbs, Moon goddesses, and astrology . This is comprehensive in its scope and the perfect book for utilizing the moon cycles in your magic practice. i highly recommend this book . I will recommend that you buy a hard copy to keep for your use. Very well done to the author. I look forward to further books by this author.

Beautifully designed hardcover with gorgeous imagery throughout that creates a world to get lost in.

Although a little light on content, this book acts as a mini guide to work with the moon phases to harness her energy to your advantage.

I've always been fascinated by the moon even as a child. The book even touches on the man in the moon origin story which my Nan would say to us kids 'look kiddos, can you see the man in the moon' - ah, all the nostalgic feels!

It's an excellent beginners guide for moon magic working in tandem with other tools such as crystals, herbs & tarot. Some sweet little spells included too, to kick start your spell casting with combinations revealed in this handbook - all the witchy vibes!

I appreciate some of the feedback given on this book is that the focus is more aesthetic than content based however for a first timer to the idea of moon magic, it has been perfect, nor too overwhelming.

Originally I chose this book as I felt it could be a quick read (and allow me to reach my reading target for the year!), however, it more became the case that I couldn't put it down.

After reading a book, I normally pass it on to allow someone else to enjoy it however this book will be remaining in my collection and I don't doubt i will be going back to it on the daily for guidance and advice.

To summarise, if you are already keen and knowledgeable on your moon magic than maybe other than aesthetically, this book may not be for you, but for a beginner who is exploring the idea, I would thoroughly recommend.

I enjoyed this book much more than I expected I would. Moon Magic is a fine introduction to understanding and working with the Moon. It exposes readers to many different approaches to connecting with moon energy and provides a plethora of spell, rituals, and meditations to practice or use as inspiration for crafting your own.

I appreciate that time was taken to discuss the Moon and moon magick across multiple cultures and time periods and that the necessary warnings were given regarding misuse of essential oils and toxic herbs.

I am choosing to take a star off for some parts where I felt more research or explanation could have been given (especially in the section on moon goddesses) but it wasn't anything crazy.
