Come, Holy Spirit

Rate this book
This volume of the writings of Don Dolindo was first published in 1949 and republished in 1985. It is an explanation of the role of the Holy Spirit in our interior and missionary life centered on the gifts, fruits, and charisms of the Holy Spirit bestowed in Confirmation. It aims at helping those preparing for confirmation, as well as providing the means of grace to live this Sacrament. The exposition is exceptionally clear and practical. It could only have been written by someone who had profoundly lived and experienced the Holy Spirit in his own life. In this work, Come, O Holy Spirit, an indisputably orthodox theology is simply and clearly presented, uplifting the soul in authentically ascetical and mystical meditations. It is a work addressed to and particularly those preparing for Confirmation, for catechists, and for all who wish to deepen the vivifying presence of the Holy Spirit in their souls and make him the very light of their existence.

This is the Servant of God Dolindo Ruotolo who is the author of the popular Surrender Prayer Novena. I have been helped by that novena more than I can say so was very pleased to find this book on the Holy Spirit written by him. The Holy Spirit, of course is the One who brings us to union with Jesus. We are given Him and all His Gifts in our baptism. But most of us have not known how to access/use those Gifts as intended so they remain locked up in our souls, or anyway, that is how I understand things from my readings. I am always praying to God to help me release/use the Gifts of the Holy Spirit within me as God intends so that I may live according to His Will. However, I know I still remain very ignorant of all of this, so I continue to read and pray, hoping for Understanding, Knowledge and Wisdom as well as the other Gifts trusting that God will give them to me as/when He wills.

This book is organized and written as the perfect manual for anyone who really wants to understand the Gifts/Fruits/Beatitudes/Charisms of the Holy Spirit. Its only downside is that because it is so factual, it can be dry reading. Nevertheless, if one asks for the aide of the Holy Spirit, to read it with Wisdom and Understanding, the text comes alive and can also be prayerful.

Servant of God Dolindo laments—as do every author I have yet read on the Holy Spirit—on the ignorance of most Christians on the Holy Spirit Who is yet key to the Coming of the Kingdom, which is precisely why I keep reading about the Holy Spirit. He is so important. Jesus tells us this, “But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” John 16.7 And Jesus tells us much else as well about the Holy Spirit, quoted throughout this book. And He has so much to give us and help us with, if we would only remember Him and ask…

“Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the Faithful…!”

EXCELLENT, much needed book!

Thank you to my spiritual director for recommending this excellent little book. I especially enjoyed the chapter on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and will be incorporating that into our parish curriculum for confirmation and for RCIA/OCIA.
