From the bestselling author of Remember Me: She escaped her painful past—but will a murder case drag her back into the darkness? Ana, who lives in a small Oxfordshire village, came from Liverpool carrying a secret. Her life is now on the straight and narrow, though, and she has a blossoming career as a policewoman. But when a vigilante starts to practice their own kind of justice on her watch, and then a body is discovered in the woods, Ana's contentment is shattered as the past comes flooding back to haunt her. Soon Ana must make a choice—turn her back on the girl she used to be . . . or embrace the bitterness and rage she has buried for so long.

What a read….a real intoxicating tale of revenge coupled with a vigilante who has had more than enough of crime going unchecked in their local estate/village….-add in an unsolved hit and run case plus a more than fiery PC who has moved into the area for a ‘fresh start’ and the story really doesn’t stop fron the beginning to the end, there was always something happening, it didn’t let up for a page
Good mix of likeable and detestable characters and good easy to read and connect to dialogue with some chapters based in the present and some in the past
It is at times a dark story and it does feature some difficult subjects but the author handles these parts sensitively and does not over dramatise them for effect
A really good engaging read that fits into many genres that ultimately makes a fine read
It has been a year since Tom.Miller & Beth Harper worked together. Now Tom is back and they are faced with the Vigilante, a hero who steps in where the police seem to be failing - until he apparently murders a young woman. A gripping and multi- stranded story which builds to an unexpected (for me) climax. Strong characters drive the story forward, and, having read The Lies She Told, it is interesting to see the developing relationship between Tom & Beth. Highly recommended.
I have waited patiently for a book from this author and what an addictive read, a Vigilante is wanting justice a woman who was involved in a hit and run driver was never found and a woman who wants justice, and a young woman who is murdered. in this town I not going to do any spoilers as the reader needs to piece it together themselves a very amazing read hope we dont have to wait long for another book from this author
This was such a great story about what happens when the public believe the police aren't doing their jobs properly. There were a lot of characters in this book, and at times, it got a little hard to remember who was who. There were also a few different stories running throughout. The stories did all come together at the end, which was great, and the horde of characters became easier to get used to by that point too. I enjoyed this one a lot, but I'd like to point out that if you have triggers regarding rape, I'd think twice about reading it as that's one of the stories that runs through this book.
A totally addictive page turner that takes the reader on a roller coaster of a journey culminating in a most brilliant finale. One of those books where I wanted to know the outcome but not end my enjoyment.
Whilst this is definitely in the thriller genre, it’s differentiation from this very popular category is the way it so cleverly intersperses the investigation with the background of many of those the crime has ‘touched.’ And as the plot unravels, it is clear that many of those who may not appear to have any relationship to the crime itself are in fact, indirect victims.
So many thrillers are described as page turners, addictive, unputdownable BUT Lynda Renham has applied her remarkable writing skills to ensure you just cannot walk away from the story for fear you might miss something. There’s a vigilante, characters with hidden pasts, those with a current, unfounded hatred of those living around them (racialism, sexism), and an investigation team whose personal lives may well have negative influences on the successful outcome of the crimes under investigation. And all this in just 375 pages of compulsive reading.
I really cannot recommend The Girl in the Woods more highly. Thanks to Lynda for granting me early access and whilst it might have been my first it will very definitely not my last of her impressive contribution to fiction.
This is the third novel by Lynda Renham I have read recently. Her plots are complex and always make compelling reading. There is also an emotional depth in her characters that her peers in the genre just don't manage to create. In my opinion she is without a doubt in the very top echelon of crime writers in the UK today. I sincerely hope that one day these novels will be adapted for television. They will be ideal for prime time viewing. It was nice to return to Oxfordshire to meet again some awesome characters. The crimes detailed in this novel are amongst the worst, the most brutal and evil, committed by men in our troubled world. The detection of these monsters in fiction might help people at risk identify similar characters in the 'real' world. Creepy, clever, packed with tension, this is a candidate for Crime Novel of the Year.
I was looking forward to reading this Lynda Renham book, having so enjoyed The Lies She Told previously. And I wasn't disappointed. Fast paced with short punchy chapters, I zipped through it. Ana is the new feisty DC on the team. Welcomed by her boss DS Beth Harper, she quickly gains the respect of most of her colleagues as being a no-nonsense, get the job done copper. However, it becomes clear that Ana has a hidden agenda behind her recent transfer to Oxford. Chapters dedicated to events 7 years earlier give some clues as to why. I admit that the storyline, although very readable , was completely OTT and far fetched However this didn't detract from its enjoyability. I'll certainly be on the lookout for more from this author. Thanks to Bloodhound Books for the ARC
Loved this book, thought that Ana was a really intreaguing character, and also enjoyed the other characters and the storyline. There were several plot strands, but they all tied together well and didn't interrupt the flow of the story. Each added greater depth and in some cases backstory to the overall book. It read a bit like the second in a series at times with the Beth/ Tom storyline. If it is, then I haven't read the previous book but it did not stop my enjoyment at all. I'd thoroughly recommend this book, and will look out for more by this author. Thanks to Bloodhound books for sending me an advanced copy to read and review.
This was a first for me by this author and read and arc courtesy of bloodhound books and heres my review. So to start with i did struggle keeping up with the different stories going on at the same time and the jumping back and forth from past to present and i nearly dnf but i stuck with it and so glad i did! The vigilante taking the law into his own hands to serve justice , Ana and the past feeling its coming back to haunt her, twists and turns as the story comes together and some really strong characters make this a really good read
DC Ana Rawlings is on a mission. She has transferred to a small Oxfordshire police department. The department is wrecked by a disguised justice collector calling himself, “The Vigilante.” He is embarrassing the police department making them appear inept. When a body is discovered in the woods, a witness blames “The Vigilante.” When Ana’s past and present collide, her life begins to unravel.
Can Ana uncover the secrets of her past and determine who is responsible for the woman’s death? Ms. Redham has done a wonderful job drawing the reader in and keeping them guessing. I really enjoyed this novel and definitely recommend it!
Although I haven't read the previous book, it didn't stop me from enjoying this one. There are a few storylines running through this book that are equally intruging. It has some interesting, strong characters, my favourite being Ana. This has gripping, well written storylines and plots that have you hooked from start to finish. It's a thoroughly enjoyable book. My thanks to Bloodhound books. This is my honest and unbiased review.
Wow, what an engaging story! This revenge plot is based on the main character’s disgust of crime within the village. The story has a plot of a hit-and-run accident that has not been solved and a new and very eager PC. The story’s plot is very energetic and intense; in other words, action is a constant.
The characters are quite believable, and the language used in the book is simple and understandable; thus, the characters are easily recognizable. The story also has an interchanging time frame of past and present tense to make the story more interesting to read. However, some elements are rather dark and depressive, but the author approaches them rather subtly.
Thus, I would like to stress that I enjoyed the book and highly encourage everyone to read it as it is diverse and contains elements of different genres.
I want to thank Bloodhound Books for allowing me to read and review this book.
Another great ARC read from Bloodhound Books. ☆ I really liked this one. The characters & flow of the story held my attention, and the farther I got, the more invested I was to solve the mystery. I def recommend this one to those who like mystery and crime books
I enjoyed this book, it was very well written with likeable strong characters, a fast pace and sensitively handled touchy subjects ie racism. Gritty and true to life, some bits were shocking and the story overall was quite sad but the ending worked well.
This was quite a chilling story of Anna and her past catching up with her. As a policewoman she should be above retribution but when circumstances present themselves what choice does she make. I had to keep turning pages to see what happened next.
This was a book that I didn't want to put down but didn't want it to end either. There are so many facets to this story, but they are all pulled together to make a cohesive and read. Red herrings and twists galore make this a very enjoyable and engaging read.
I was finding the number of characters difficult at some points but knew they would all connect in some way and they did. A story of revenge and justice that had me gripped.
I've read a few books by this author now and I've really enjoyed them all so far - so when I spotted this new release, I just had to grab it and dive right in.
Renham always manages to grab attention right for the off and I was hooked from the start. The premise of this storyline was exciting and I found it really easy to relate to the main character.
I love a morally grey character and in this case we learn of Ana's past bit by bit as we jump from the past to the present throughout. There was a lot of changes to the timeline, but these were easy to follow and added a bit of intrigue to the storyline.
I love Renham's complex plots, this was another that kept me thinking all the way through - trying to make theories and work the crime out, but there were twists and turns which sent me back to square one and I didn't see the ending coming at all!
A brilliant read again and I will definitely be looking out for more books by this author in the future.
Wow what a story. This book has it all good characters and a good story. The revenge plot in the story is brilliant and how it slowly emerges as you find out the back story of the characters kept me reading and wanting more.
I enjoyed the moving from one time frame to another, it made the story very interesting- lots of twists and turns and a couple of moments that made me say oh no ! Well worth a read
A gritty good read. A real nail biter that takes you from inside the life of a young woman who has been through it. To the life of a policewoman who is climbing the ranks & standing for what she feels she needs to. A vigilante starts putting right what they think they need to as the police aren’t. But are they? There is a lot more to this story and it’s a great read & listen. As I swapped between ebook & audiobook. Narrator was very good too. Full good choice.
There’s a lot going on in this book with multiple characters and storylines but once you settle in to the book it becomes easier to keep track. As this is my first book by Lynda Renham I’m not sure if I was supposed to read an earlier one first as the Beth/Tom storyline felt like it was a continuation of a previous story. The star of the book is undoubtedly Ana who was a great character and her back story added real depth. This was well written with a relentless pace that became highly addictive. An author I will be looking into more! Very good
TRIGGER WARNING: rape, racism Ana has transferred to a new police team. Their first case is a vigilante taking on a group of racist teenagers. Then a troubled young woman dies and the vigilante is suspected of murder but Ana doesn't think it fits his other behaviour... The Girl in the Woods is described as a psychological thriller but also has strong police procedural/crime thriller elements. A group of teenage boys is spoiling the tranquility of the quiet Oxfordshire village. One man is prepared to stand up to them but hides behind a masked persona known as The Vigilante. Then a troubled teenaged girl (related to one of the racist boys) is attacked and killed in the woods and The Vigilante is accused so the police hunt ramps up. Ana is keen to prove herself in the new team but the police have a variety of personal and professional issues. Beth has a new superior officer and the pair have a 'past'. The mentions of their backstory refer to events in The Lies She Told but there are no spoilers about the case. Elements of their personal lives which featured in the first book are developed in this one but it would still work perfectly well as a stand alone book. Most of the book is written in the present day to show current events. There are also chapters set 7 years in the past, allowing us to guess at the link between the two timelines. Both timelines involve girls and young women being abused and raped which is very powerful and emotive but I felt it was handled sensitively. There is also racist language and violence featured prominently in the book and I thought this was also dealt with to show the unpleasantness and unacceptability of this behaviour. The plot and writing style were wonderfully engaging. At first, I did find myself a little overwhelmed with the different timelines and wealth of characters. However, by the end I was utterly hooked and making connections between the plot threads. The Girl in the Woods is an engaging and emotionally charged novel.
This thriller /mystery takes many twists and turns to end with an unexpected surprise. Not only is this a thriller that you cannot put down, but it also deals with a number of current topics such as racism, violence, abuse, alcoholism, and rape. It brings to the forefront the violence faced by a young man of Indian heritage. It rightly condemns the actions of a racist gang but shows us some sparks of humanity among the group. These are three dimensional characters and not just cliches.
The main story and mystery revolve around a young constable. She is a strong young woman who has basically raised herself due to her mother’s alcoholism and early death. We see her strengths, but we also see her weakness which makes her a character for which the reader wishes a good outcome. Her hidden past is revealed as you read. There are many other well written characters and they all are connected to each other in some way. The reader just has to keep reading in order to have all of the connections revealed. The manner in which they are revealed will keep the reader intrigued until the end of the book.
Ana is on a mission. In her professional life, she’s a police officer, recently moved to a new town, and determined to be an effective member of her law enforcement team. In private, she’s a very angry woman. After a spate of vigilante attacks, and then the murder of a young girl, Ana’s hidden past creeps ever closer and starts to seep through the cracks.
Thoroughly engrossing, this book weaves multiple threads together in a twisty and compelling plot. Clues are deftly scattered, but you’re always kept guessing as what seemed clear one moment is upended the next. There are emotional moments, visceral scenes, and a heart-racing, edge-of-your-seat ending.
This is everything I want in a psychological thriller and an absolute page-turner. The writing is slick, the characters beautifully drawn, and the plot exciting, engaging, and deliciously complex. The back and forth between the past and present is handled with a deft touch and the conclusion is one that will stay with me for a long time! I will definitely be on the lookout for more books from Lynda Renham.
Laurie was betrayed by someone who was supposed to be trustworthy, a man with authority and power. Who would believe her story, when she was the wayward daughter of an alcoholic? At fifteen, and an orphan, she was too young to cope with the resultant pregnancy. Ana is an ambitious young policewoman who has requested a transfer to Stonesend. When a young girl is murdered suspicion initially falls on her Asian boyfriend, but Ana knows better and is determined to find the perpetrator and bring him to justice. Meanwhile a vigilante is taking the law into his own hands. This is a moving and well constructed crime novel, with many extra elements that give it the edge over run of the mill stories. There is poverty, neglect, alcoholism, racism, abuse and kindness. Ultimately the kindness wins through. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it highly.
This is the first book by Lynda Renham that I have read. I was impressed with her writing. The plot of this novel is complex with many layers and a multiplicity of characters
The novel goes back and forth between the past and the present. Part of the story is told by new arrival to this police force Ana Rawlings. As the story progresses we connect the present to the past and realize that Ana has chosen this location in search of revenge.
There is another plot line involving a character calling himself the Vigilante who disposes of people who deserve but have not received justice. The competing storylines of the different characters is as times confusing and often results in some red herrings.
A thoroughly enjoyable read. I look forward to reading more by this author.
Thanks to Bloodhound Books for providing me with an Advance Review Copy.
Lynda Renham's "The Girl in the Woods" is a taut thriller with lots of twists and turns. In addition to the two main women characters, Beth and Ana, there is a large cast whose stories converge in a final whodunit reveal. There are mysteries within mysteries and a bit of a dual story line that makes sense in the end. Renham does a good job crafting characters who aren't strictly virtuous or nefarious. They all seem to have past hurts and axes to grind. Readers must stay on their toes to sort through the various characters' motivations and the knotty plot lines, but they do come together and all is explained. If you like twisty thrillers, this is an enjoyable read.
