Charlotte Clarke’s life revolves around numbers and facts. But when life throws her a curveball, will she rely on her brain or her heart to guide her?
Love is the last thing on Charlotte’s mind. She’s too busy teaching uninterested high school students mathematics to make time for dating, despite her best friends’ protests that she needs a man. They seem to forget that the breakup with her long-time boyfriend shattered her heart.
When Charlotte’s friends discover a new dating app, they sign her up, surprising her with a list of men interested in stealing her heart. Not wanting to disappoint them, Charlotte chooses the first name on the list, preparing herself for utter humiliation and rejection. What she doesn’t know is the app is a cover for athletes looking for serious love. And one thing Charlotte doesn’t need is another athlete breaking her heart.
Andrew Rossi is sitting out with his second injury of the season. At his age, he’s beginning to worry his career with the Savannah Sharks might be coming to a close. What’s worse is he has no one to share the rest of his life with. Sick of superficial dating and flimsy relationships, Andrew decides to sign up on an elite, super secret athlete dating app. The second his eyes land on a gorgeous, brainy redhead with a deep love for dogs, his heart leaps in with cautious optimism.
The only problem? His sunshiny, sweet date despises athletes.
Keeping his athletic stardom a secret gives Andrew the chance to get to know Charlotte. As the two grow closer, he knows it’s only a matter of time before he has to come clean. But how do you tell a woman you’re falling for that you’re the one thing she hates?
Caught Stealing is a sweet, secret identity baseball romance with light faith elements, a side of comedy, and two show-stealing pups!
This is the first book in the Southern Sports Sweethearts series and the first in the Savannah Sharks baseball mini-series! The books in this series can be read in any order, mixed and matched, and moved around!
M. J. Padgett is first and foremost a mom. Her free-spirited daughter has quite the vivid imagination, and her antics sometimes find their way into her mommy’s work. She is a lover of all things chocolate, a Grimm and Dickens addict, a self-proclaimed smarty-pants, and an introvert to the core.
Writing is her true passion (after raising her daughter, of course), and she writes as often as possible. One of her favorite things about writing is creating a world where people can escape reality for a little while, maybe even walk away feeling hopeful about the real world around them. When it comes to reading, she loves a book that can make her forget where she is no matter the genre. If she can get lost and feel like the characters are her real friends, she’s a happy reader.
My brain is mush right now. That's how good M.J. Padgett's books are. And when you're in tears at the end of reading the book for the second time, you know it's a good one. This book made me feel a lot of things. Some good, some not so good. Made me laugh out loud, too. I love how patient Andrew was with Lottie-far more than I would have been. But I also loved that he stood up for himself. I can't wait to see what M.J. Has in store for us next!
Caught Stealing is a clean sweet sports romance with fantastic kind characters and the bonus of two adorable fur babies.
I loved the balance of strength and kindness in the MMC. He was such a great guy.
The characters are very wholesome. My favorite thing about these characters is that they were amazing communicators. I could learn something from them.
I adored this first book in a new sports series. Charlotte (Lottie) is a high school math teacher and Andrew is a starting pitcher for a local baseball team, although his career is near its end. A top-secret dating app matches them and with its near 100% accuracy, it’s anyone’s guess if the deal breaker will make this couple or break them up forever.
These characters are so wonderful. Lottie is so carefree with her ready smile and fun personality, while Andrew just wants to be liked for himself and not his money or fame. He’s so sweet and thoughtful, taking care to forge this path gently. I love that their dogs get along so well too. Padgett does a great job of incorporating the challenges to this potential relationship, while maintaining the obvious chemistry that exudes in every interaction. It’s also beautiful to see the way faith and religion play an integral part to the solidness of this duo’s foundation, although it is a minor part. And honestly, it was hard not to swoon with each text, run-in, date, and reason to banter.
I love the hints that leave doors cracked for possible future installments in the Southern Sports Sweethearts series. This is a set for any sports or romance lover.
Content: mild romance; mild religion

FINALLY! An adult book that handles problems like adults! This book is the perfect example of showing a story where there can be tension without lies and scandal. Charlotte and Andrew were so much fun from the very get go. This is the perfect “light” read that still has depth. Both Andrew and Charlotte are forced to face their insecurities but they work through the struggles with solid communication and honesty. Andrew was so patient with Charlotte but her sweetness definitely helped make his patience believable. Their chemistry was amazing and carried through the story beautifully. I also loved the nods to Faith throughout the whole book. Even though I wouldn’t consider this a “Christian romance” the characters were very clearly Christian and strived to follow God’s lead which I found very refreshing.
What a great baseball romance! And it’s a great start to a new series, as well. When I began reading this book, I worried that Andrew might be walking the line of being untruthful by keeping his famous identity a secret, however, that was not the case at all. In fact, this book had amazing communication between the main characters.
I really felt for both of these characters throughout the story. I especially felt for Andrew as he was knocked for a loop upon learning that this woman he was falling for might drop him quickly upon learning that he was a professional athlete. The way he treated Lottie, with patience and kindness as she worked through all of her conflicting emotions was simply beautiful.
I loved the way Lottie and Andrew’s story played out. There was great romantic chemistry between these two and a sweet faith element that was demonstrated in the way these two treated others and in how they communicated with each other.
I absolutely loved this story from the first page to the last and am looking forward to reading more books in this series.
I really enjoyed this baseball romance! I loved how Padgett set up this series and I could already see the connections and the world building was done so well.
Charlotte and Andrew had some great banter and flirting that definitely upped the swoon level! Their fun and flirty messaging convos were so fun and I loved that they connected over their funny dogs. Reading their relationship grow felt like those first date feelings. Padgett captured that so well. They had such a playful relationship and though they were nervous with each other, they weren't shy to share their feelings when it was necessary. They got it to some funny moments that were adorable and so sweet. They handled their conflict so well and I loved seeing the depth and growth it brought to both Charlotte and Andrew.
Having Andrew's baseball teammates such a part of the book was wonderful. I loved seeing their comradery and how he handled the situation with the cocky rookie. Both their friend groups were so supportive and welcoming.
Can't wait to see what sport Padgett brings us next!
"...something tells me you’re gonna be my forever girl, Lottie Clarke... I can’t wait until you realise it too.”
Thought I would give this book a try as I saw a tiktok highlighting books by Christian authors. I had braced myself to cringe the whole time but I am pleasantly surprised. Of course it took a bit to get used to reading vernacular like "praying for you" etc but I did feel the chemistry between the MCs and I am so SO glad the book wasn't weird about attraction and kissing HAHAHA.
A few holes in timeline set up BUT overall, a fun read!
Caught Stealing was a sweet read involving a high school teacher Charlotte and Andrew, a starting pitcher for a local baseball team. The characters were great, and the communication between them were refreshing and honest. Add in a secret dating app, two adorable fur babies, fun texts and banter, obvious chemistry, and faith elements, and you will have a hard time putting this sports book down.
Generally I find myself reading fantasy but I have certain authors that I read contemporary romance by. M.J. Padgett is one of them. Something about her books feels very comforting and cozy to me. Caught Stealing is yet another cute love story by Padgett.
Charlotte is a sweet character with a small grudge. Who can blame her though? I loved watching her work through her past hurts to find love again. There were a couple of times I wanted to yell at her for holding on so firmly to the past. She grows past that though. Andrew was a sweetheart from the very beginning. He is humble despite his fame and he treats Charlotte like a queen. I laughed every time he referred to himself as an old man.
Charlotte and Andrew have a lot of cute interactions throughout this novel. My favorite being a beach scene. I smiled so much during that interaction. And who doesn’t love a scene with a protective leading man? I know I do. Also, this story contains scenes with mischievous dogs!
The ending was sweet and satisfying. All loose ends were neatly tied off. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I would love to see Koa have his own story. He was rather charming 😘
Thank you to M.J. Padgett for an ARC of Caught Stealing!
Caught Stealing is a sweet, clean romance full of swoony moments, genuine character growth, humor and a touch of light faith.
I don’t normally go for sports romance books but quite honestly, somehow an arc fell into my lap (my email) so either I forgot that I signed up or it was just a blessing because I really enjoyed this first introduction to the genre!
The camaraderie with Andrew and his team, the descriptions of the baseball scene, even the tension amongst certain members of the Savannah Sharks, all of it was fascinating to me and makes me want to check out more books in this genre!
I enjoyed the journey Lottie and Andrew went on together. Ladies, let me tell you that Andrew is a real dreamboat. 😉
And furry babies rep for the win!
P.S. I love that this was set in the south (as a southern girl myself, I want more stories set in my home state!), and even more so that it was set in Savannah. I visited Savannah so I enjoyed being able to picture and reminisce based on the author’s vivid descriptions on the setting.
I will definitely be back for more when it comes to M.J. Padgett’s sports romance books!
Caught Stealing is the perfect start of MJ Padgett new series Southern Sports Romance
I loved Andrew and thought he was the sweetest MMC. He was very patient while Lottie was working through her past hurts and hesitations from her last relationship which lasted 3 years and ended in cheating. They worked together and were a great balance of giving space for Lottie to work things out but also seeing how their connection played out. There were several swoony, flirty moments that fit in the storyline perfectly.
Favorite moments: Walk in the beach Motorcycle riding Playing pool with teammates Dunk Tank
Tropes: +Sports Romance +Online dating +He falls first +Slow burn
Padgett has an incredible knack for creating heartwarming yet humourous stories that don’t disappoint! And there something so refreshing about a confident man with unfailing patience for a woman, not pressuring but pursuing her—putting her first. Lottie & Andrew are adorable, and I can’t wait for the rest of the sports couples to be revealed!
I adored these two! This was a new to me Author and I felt like she did such an incredible job at really laying the groundwork to their relationship. They meet on an app but Charlotte has a lot to overcome before she is ready to pursue anything new. This was a shorter book but I felt like I got everything I needed out of it. It was very well done. Andrew was so patient & understanding and I really loved Charlotte’s character as well! She was so fun! I will definitely be reading more from this Author!
—Quotes She laughs like nothing can hurt her, and maybe it can’t since she’s ruled out any possibility of getting her heart broken again. But dang, do I want to be the reason she laughs like that.
I settle on the seat and flip up the kickstand. It’s now or never. She wants honesty, she’s gonna get it. “I did. Because something tells me you’re gonna be my forever girl, Lottie Clarke.” I glance at her, her mouth slightly ajar. “I can’t wait until you realize it too.”
I started this book by just picking it off from my TBR instead of picking it up because of my mood, which was my first no no 🤦♀️regardless, though I still found it nice. The secret identity trope was handled quite well which I appreciated, and it was revealed early on instead of being held off until the last minute.(Thank You!) I loved how the book portrayed their everyday lives a bit more realistically than how I’ve seen other ones, without having constant crossovers or convenient coincidences. Now the dating app isn’t my favorite..(yes I’m old fashioned, sorry!) I did enjoy the book regardless and I do think I will continue the series as it releases. I’m not assigning stars just yet because I do not want to underrate it due to my initial mood lol
This is my first book by M.J. Padgett and I really liked it. Charlotte is a math teacher who's hesitant to jump back into the dating pool after a painful breakup. Enter Andrew, a professional baseball player who's tired of superficial relationships, when they both sign up for a secret dating app.
These two had chemistry from the start and I love that Andrew fell first. Both Charlotte and Andrew are very likeable and relatable characters. It was fun watching them connect over their dogs and the flirty texting is one of my favorite parts.
This is a fun and enjoyable read that will leave you smiling. It's perfect for fans of romantic comedies who are looking for a lighthearted and uplifting story. I received a complimentary copy. All opinions in this review are my own.
I’m so stoked for this entire series!! This was an epic way to start off the series.
I loved how patient Andrew was with Charlotte and how understanding he was of the hurt she was dealing with. Even though it was hard for him to be lumped in with her “all athletes are jerks” thinking at times, because of her ex Rory who is a hockey player, he still was patient with her. and had loads of self-control when all he wanted to do was hold her and kiss all her worries away! 🤭🤭. I was glad he chose to tell her what he did for a living because even not knowing the full story he knew being honest with her was the right thing. (It’s the right thing all the time 😉 tho it’s not easy) I loved how he was friends with his teammates and even tried to reach out to the rookie who was full of himself though he really just wanted to put him in his place. Seriously Andrew was so sweet and swoony!!! And he rides a motorcycle!!! Y’all will love that scene after the first game Charlotte agrees to attend. (Iykyk). He just wants to find that forever love God had for him and not the jersey chasers that they deal with and with a little nudging by his best friend and a word-of-mouth dating app things just might work out.
Charlotte swore off athletes after her hockey playing ex boyfriend cheated while on the road. Now her sunny disposition is hidden by the rain clouds of doubt and sadness, hurt and betrayal. Her friends just want their sunny bubbly friend back so with a little sneaking they get her on an app and she takes a chance on the first guy that messages her. Things are looking up and then they’re not…maybe? Andrew may be an athlete but the few times they’ve spent together have her feelings all shaken up.
I loved how Lottie didn’t let her feelings against athletes keep her from giving Andrew a chance. Sure she struggled with those feelings and separating Andrew from her ex but it was written beautifully and showed her growth both in trusting God and forgiving but not blindly trusting again. She struggled with going slow because she felt like it wasn’t fair to Andrew and trying to get closure from Rory and settle that once and for all. Andrew showed her things could be different and when she finally went all in (he was gone for her from the beginning🤭🤭) it was 🔥🔥.
So much sweetness (iykyk) I just loved it!
You’ll love if you like ⚾️ athletes 🐾 adorable dogs and dog owners ⚾️cutest nicknames 🐾flirty banter ⚾️dunk tank escapades 🐾walks on the beach (iykyk) ⚾️ him cooking for her 🐾her being a secret pool shark ⚾️ teammates like brothers 🐾motorcycle escapades ⚾️ swoony swoony kisses!! 🐾 statistics teacher
Caught Stealing is a sweet and swoony romance with light faith themes and characters that you learn to love.
Even though the MMC is a professional athlete, I personally wouldn’t have read it as a sports romance, since Andrew is not able to play baseball due to an injury in the presented time. Also, his being an athlete is the only reason Lottie is reluctant to date him, but the sport itself doesn’t seem to be that important in this book, in contrary to the “sports family” and the lifestyle.
I have to say Andrew is pretty much perfect. I’m usually not the biggest fan of sports romances because I’m kind of annoyed with these overly good looking and famous male characters who could have every woman they want, but Andrew’s personality made up for it. He really was the sweetest, absolutely honest and considerate.
I really liked Lottie as a character too and I empathized with her and her heartbreak - not only about the betrayal of the man she loved but all that came with it - a lot. What I didn’t like was how extremely flirty she was with Andrew while saying she only didn’t want to date him due to him being a professional athlete. She said herself she was leading him on and realized this was wrong (she was actually more lying to herself, but the outcome was the same), but I always hated when people played with feelings of another person, aware of that or not. I know from different people who are/were close to me when this kind of behavior led to serious heartbreak, so I’m a bit sensitive about this. Her reluctance toward Andrew was a bit over dramatic and immature but simultaneously very understandable and I think M.J. did a great job of portraying Lottie’s trust issues and how deeply she was affected and hurt by the awful ending of her last relationship. In the end she was open and honest about her feelings and insecurities, which made her a wonderful character.
The chemistry between the two of them is amazing. I appreciated that they care for each other as people and there were a lot of funny and sweet moments between them, but the physical attraction was a bit too emphasized for my taste. I can do with less of that and would actually love to read about an average looking couple for once in a while. But this is just me and a general observation/statement that I will point out every other review for romance books since this is a recurring issue and as long as the emotional connection is done well (like it is here), this will never affect my rating. ;)
The romance has light faith themes in it and the characters are Christians, but what we see about their faith is more surface level, not really deep questions or faith arcs, but I still enjoyed it. It seemed to me that Charlotte dated someone who wasn’t a Christian before she met Andrew, which is usually a problem for me. But I’m not completely sure it’s the case and both Andrew and Charlotte made clear early that they are believers looking for true commitment.
This was a sweet romance with very little angst and drama and I’m already excited to read the next book and to learn who the other books in the series will be about, since we got so many hints about possible candidates.
* Thank you to the author for letting me read an advanced copy of this book. I leave this review voluntarily and the expressed opinions are my own.
– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone
– this is told from Andrew & Charlotte’s points of view
– both characters are Christians & speak to each other about elements of their faith (prayer, giving things to God, etc)
– a character’s ex had cheated on them (which is why they broke up); we do see this ex in the story & the ex is trying to get back together with the character
Review:
I enjoyed this sweet romance! I loved that Charlotte disliked athletes & didn’t know that Andrew was one at first. It created a realistic pull in her when she found out he was and I felt I could connect with the struggle she was facing in her feelings versus her original plan to stay far away from them. I loved that Andrew loved Charlotte with all of himself, even when she discovered the truth of his profession. He was so sweet and hopeful that she’d still choose to love him. I loved that he knew himself enough that until she made a decision, Andrew didn’t even want to entertain finding someone else. It also showed a commitment to Charlotte that isn’t often seen when it comes to online dating or those who may have gone through a bad break up. I loved that he could give her that cushion of security in addition to standing by his own convictions.
I can’t wait to see more athletes find love in this series!
Summary:
Andrew is feeling the wear of having been a pitcher for the Savannah Sharks the last few years and worries that his career may be coming to an end. With this change on the horizon, he needs to assess what he’ll want in his life outside of baseball. The one thing Andrew knows he’ll want is a real relationship with a woman who isn’t with him for the fame, just the man. So when his friend mentions an app that brought him to his wife, Andrew is hesitant but interested in trying it out. In the process he falls hard and fast for his match, but discovers along the way that she is beyond disinterested in being in a relationship with an athlete. How & when is the best time to tell her that the one type of person she hates is who he is?
Charlotte separated with her long-time boyfriend months ago and has no desire to jump into the dating pool again after his betrayal. But when her friends discover a successful dating app, they sign her up despite her protests. To get them to stop their meddling, Charlotte humors them and starts a conversation with one of her matches. What she didn’t expect was to get feelings for the guy on the other end… or that he’d be the exact kind of guy she swore off after her ex: an athlete.
Okay, confession time: I’m a total sucker for sports romances—especially when he falls first, and there’s some secret identity action. Caught Stealing had all of that, plus adorable dogs, so I was all in. But while it left me smiling, it wasn’t a home run. More like a solid double play with a bit of extra hustle.
Let’s start with the good stuff: the banter! Charlotte (aka Lottie) and Andrew are total pros at playful back-and-forth, especially in their flirty texting. Their relationship kicks off on a dating app, which made for some hilarious and heart-melting moments. Their first meet-cute, totally gave me those butterflies you feel on a perfect first date. There’s a lot of charm in the way they connect, and their chemistry is undeniable. You know that feeling when you just click with someone? Yeah, that’s them.
Andrew is an absolute sweetheart—who can resist a guy who hides his fame because he wants to be liked for who he is, not his money or his baseball stardom? And Lottie? She’s carefree, bright, and so easy to root for. Oh, and did I mention Andrew? The man is head over heels, and it’s adorable.
Now for the not-so-perfect parts. The story’s biggest flaw for me was the back-and-forth. I get that every romance has its tension, but the yo-yoing between "Are we or aren’t we?" got a little exhausting. I’m all for a bit of drama, but it felt like we were on repeat at times. That said, what saved it was the way they actually handled their conflict—like adults! No third-act breakup (thank goodness), and they weren’t afraid to talk about their feelings when it really mattered.
The faith aspect was a nice, subtle touch too. It wasn’t in your face, but it added a layer to their relationship that felt genuine. I appreciated how it helped strengthen their bond without overshadowing the rest of the story.
Overall, Caught Stealing was a fun, sweet read with great chemistry, lots of laughs, and some serious swoon-worthy moments. It just didn’t quite knock it out of the park for me. Too much of the will-they-won’t-they took away from what could’ve been an even stronger romance. But hey, if you’re in the mood for a cute, heartwarming sports romance where the guy falls hard and fast give it a swing!
Verdict: A fun rom-com with some bumps, but definitely worth the read if you love playful banter, sweet athletes, and flirty texts. (And dogs. Definitely dogs.)
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is book 1 in the Southern Sports Sweethearts Series and book 1 in the Savannah Sharks Series and can be read as a standalone. Caught Stealing is told through Andrew and Charlotte's pov and is a sweet baseball romance.
After Charlotte's last relationship, her heart is still bruised and her walls are high. Yet, when she begins talking to Andrew through the dating app and they meet in person, she can't deny that she feels drawn to him. Likewise, Andrew is fascinated by her and thinks a future between them is possible. However, his career and Charlotte's worries are two things that give him pause and be careful with how he approaches her.
Though their connection was almost instant, because of Charlotte's experiences, their romance was a slow burn. Maybe some readers won't be as patient with her as Andrew was but I think the author did a great job in making Charlotte's feelings understandable. Charlotte was also aware of how her pain was affecting her and I appreciated her honesty with Andrew. With how caring and understanding he was, it was easy to love him and root for things to go well with him. Although he was determined to prove himself to Charlotte, he made his feelings known without being pushy. While the romance was a slow burn, there were plenty of sweet moments to make it worthwhile. Their romance was a clean one consisting of kisses that don't get overly descriptive and no foul language was used. Aside from the romance, I enjoyed the setup for this sports world that the author created and I'm excited to read more - particularly more about Andrew's teammates.
Oh my goodness... this book! I'm not saying that baseball romance is the new hockey romance (it's no secret how much I love those!), but with books like this...? Well, it certainly could be! I absolutely adored Andrew and Charlotte (Lottie) together. Both were forced into joining an exclusive dating app and rather apprehensive about it, but the chemistry between them upon meeting was immediate and undeniable. The problem? She'd been burned by her hockey player ex and as such had a strict 'no dating athletes' policy. I loved how Andrew was so very patient with her as she had to work through all of his issues... not backing down in his interest, but also not pushing her past where she was comfortable. Seriously, he was the absolute sweetest. There was also such a playfulness between the two of them that kept me smiling throughout. And that first REAL kiss... wow! Throw in some fabulous teammates and other side characters and a beautiful message of God's plan and forgiveness and there truly was just so much to love about this story... and I definitely loved it!
Caught Stealing is a closed-door romance with nothing beyond swoony kisses and no language and light faith content.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
**Thank you so much to the author for giving me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review! These thoughts are entirely my own.**
-- This is a sweet sports romance, with very low spice. It is a part of a series but can be read as a standalone.--
I loved this book! It was so much fun. The characters were developed really well, and I loved getting to read through both of their perspectives. They were two very distinct but realistic people with their own struggles. I love how faith was intertwined throughout this story, and I loved that it felt intentional, too. Andrew and Lottie both relied on God to deal with their issues, both individually and together. Their chemistry was really well-written, as was the book in general. Andrew and Lottie were so cute and supportive of each other. I loved how protective Andrew was, but he also stepped back when necessary to let Lottie make her own choices. He was so patient, too. Lottie was so fun and spunky, and I enjoyed seeing how she brought more joy into Andrew's life and forced his perspective to shift from ever-so-slight negativity towards one of gratitude for what he had in his life. I really enjoyed reading, and I was hooked from start to finish!
🥜 In a Nutshell: A teacher meets a baseball player hiding his profession through a dating app and they hit it off. The problem is she doesn't date athletes after being burned in the past and she has no idea he's a baseball player.
✅ Baseball Romance ✅ No 3rd Act Break-Up ✅ Themes of Forgiveness and Patience
This is my first time reading M.J. Padgett and I really enjoyed this sweet romcom! It was light and fun yet showed the struggles of trusting in relationships when you've been burned in the past. It felt realistic towards that situation but it never felt like it weighed the book down. It instead focused on forgiveness and trusting God in the waiting. The romance was really sweet and I enjoyed both characters very much. I liked that they formed a friendship first and took things slowly. They were patient with each other and grew through their struggles together. I liked the backdrop of a lot of their activities like baseball games, picnics with their dogs, walks on the beach, and the school fundraiser. All in all, a sweet light-hearted romance that is perfect for spring with all of the fun outdoor activities. I look forward to reading more of M. J. Padgett in the future!
This is my first book by MJ Padgett and I was excited to dive in. I love that there are so many sports romances being released lately, so I was looking forward to reading a baseball one! Go Braves!
Lottie and Andrew were both great characters. I enjoyed seeing Lottie in action in the classroom, she is a high school stats teacher. Andrew is recovering from an injury, nearing the possible end of his baseball career. Both were talked into joining a dating app. Once they gave it chance, they found they were compatible. I liked how the author brings these characters together. The progress of their relationship felt so real and relatable. Their texts were my favorite.
But… Andrew is a professional athlete and that is a roadblock for Lottie, having been hurt before. This part of the book was where Andrew shined. His sympathy and caring nature was brought out. Patience for what he knew he wanted, and that was Lottie. The mentions of faith and religion felt natural in the story, as this was important to both characters. This is a great book all around.
I am excited to read another book from this author! I received an eARC from the author. All views are my own.
"Because something tells me you're gonna be my forever girl, Lottie Clarke." I glance at her, her mouth slightly ajar. "I can't wait until you realize it too." Andrew is at a crossroads. His baseball career seems to be coming to a close, and it makes him realize that it's time to look for love. When his friends set him up on a dating app, he is taken with Lottie, a teacher whose unassuming and sunshine character completely charm him. However, Lottie has promised herself that she will never again date a professional athlete- been there, done that. As Andrew sets out to change her mind, will Lottie be able to let go of her past hurt and take a chance with him? I am such a fan of sports romance, and reading a baseball one, which hasn't been as common in my reading life, was a delight to read! Andrew was such a wonderful character! I loved his honesty, commitment and patience with Lottie. I also really enjoyed his teammates and the way he helped to lead his team. I also thoroughly enjoy getting to read a story with faith elements, and this author does a wonderful job of including them in her stories! I really enjoyed this sweet sports romance and look forward to what comes next!
3.5 almost didn’t finish but I liked the MMC SUPER sweet, slow burn, clean, closed door romance.
I really liked Andrew but there were so many inconsistencies it was hard to like Lottie. The ex cheated on her what seemed like for a while because everyone knew. Also he came off as a narcissist only wanting her back when it didn’t work out with the other girl. Okay that makes sense and it’s why Lottie was so hurt but then as the book progressed it seemed like he was being painted as this super nice guy who may or may not need a second chance. Also who struggles this much? He cheated on you. It’s been three months and you have a SUPER nice guy in front of you. MOVE ON!! Oddly at the beginning I felt like she was ready. Everything dragged on for way too long and really made her seem incredibly immature and indecisive. It also felt very repetitive. At the beach I think they needed to start dating then and just go slow. The last half of the book should have just been a cute story of how their relationship progressed. Otherwise it seemed like the author was trying to create conflict or more than there really was.

Caught Stealing is a classic M.J. Padgett romantic comedy. It's sweet, low-stakes, and has prevalent Christian themes. It is set around a baseball team, the Savannah Sharks, and follows the romance between near-retirement pitcher Andrew and statistics teacher Charlotte, who has sworn never to date another athlete. Since Andrew keeps his profession a secret at first (hoping to make a connection with someone who isn't after his fame), there's some juicy drama. Sort of.
The one "problem" I had with this book was how good of people the characters were. Andrew was too honest to let any part of his relationship be a charade. On the one hand, this is lovely, but on the other hand, I was kinda hoping for a bit more drama. In fact, there were several times when I wanted the characters to make the wrong choices for the sake of drama. However, they chose correctly and took the high and noble ground. Oddly, that irked me a bit, which leads me to wonder if I've been a little too influenced by BookTok...
Now, having morally good characters is not a true flaw in a book. It wasn't exactly what I was hoping for, but that's a misalignment of my expectations and the book's content, not a flaw. If you're looking for a sweet and clean romantic comedy with low stakes and strong morals, this is a absolutely the book for you!
M.J. Padgett hits it out of the park with Caught Stealing. It's the first book in her new southern sports sweethearts series, and if it's any indication of what the rest of the series looks like, I can't wait to read the rest.
Andrew and Lottie are not perfect, but they come pretty close. I mean, who doesn't love a pininc as the first date. Included in their adventures that follow are a school carnival, attending minor league baseball games, romantic walks on the beach, and hanging out with Andrew's teammates and Lottie's friends. Andrew and Lottie are both surrounded by a strong community, who I hope get their own stories one day. (Also, I need a Dawson Brothers story or preferably stories)
All in all, Caught Stealing is a five-star read, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a fun sports romance.
I was given an ARC by the author, but this does not impact my opinions on this story.
