Every day we have another opportunity to pray for the holy souls in purgatory. Here is a powerful tool to help you accomplish that mission. Foreword by Fr. Mitch Pacwa, S.J.
January 1, 2026: Starting this again! This is one of those which I should be reading perpetually especially since I have been recording the death dates of all those I know and love here, so that I can pray for them as their anniversaries come around again. One of my resolutions for this year....
September 26, 2023: Changed this from 'read' to 'books-I-will-be-reading-until-I'.
This is actually a daily. A few years back I added people who died from the opioid crisis. I cut their pictures from the magazine and pasted them in my book. I didn't have death dates, so I put them in anywhere. Now I am going back with the full list of those executed by our state and their victims. Before I was just doing it as the executions happened. I told our Carmelite community about it yesterday when we were talking about how St. Therese prayed for her 'child' Mr. Pranzini and that I had all their deceased family members in 'my book'.
Reread in 2018: This is the most comprehensive book I have found on Purgatory and my favorite as well because it is arranged in daily format. I use it to record the deaths of those I love and/or loved ones love, to remember to pray for them on the anniversaries of their death. For many people, these anniversaries are very important and it is helpful to take note of this. This book consists of reflections for each day of the year, saints quotes/scripture texts, and prayers. I keep it close.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: The reflections in this book are so good that I ‘cheated’ and read all the way through—unable to limit myself to one-a-day. Now I’ll go back and just read the reflection appropriate for the day. Since Ms. Tassone has written other books about the Holy Souls, I will move on to one of those for additional reading.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough! They have passed from this life but must not be forgotten!
January 19, 2016: This has become my before-bed prayer/meditation book. The other day during one of my organization projects (fits?) I was inspired to gather up all the holy cards brought home from many funerals (and falling out of bibles) and file them here, each on the date of that soul’s entrance into Eternal Life. Now as I pray my way through this book I am reminded of family, friends, acquaintances, and even strangers who left this earth on a particular day in history. Some cards have a picture, others a brief bio and some just two dates: birth and death.
Where I no longer have a card for a loved one, I’m writing in the information. As time permits I’m also adding others, such as those executed by my state and elsewhere—not that I mean this to be an exhaustive list, only enough names to remind me of the myriad of souls who have moved on. ‘Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.’ It is sweetly peaceful to end the day praying for those God has called home. If they are already perfected in His Grace, then my prayers for them will no doubt be lovingly directed where best needed, but it comforts me to remember loved ones to Jesus in prayer.
One future problem I foresee: the book is already bulging from all the holy cards—and I know I still haven’t found all there are. Eventually I think I’ll have to begin removing the cards and writing in the individual information … but for now, I like things as they are.
January 12, 2016: This is one of those reflection books which is so spiritually nutritional (on many levels!) the usual daily ration is less than starvation levels. It is easy to read several days and still want more! Ms. Tassone has written a number of other books on this topic of the Holy Souls earning herself the well-deserved title, “The Purgatory Lady”. I’m not even 1/3 of the way through and I already gave away one as a birthday gift. I also want to get the rest of her books.
She draws from Sacred Scripture, writings of the Church Fathers, Popes, Saints, theologians, and mystics.
This book is for daily reading, including February 29. You can read it through, but it's less numbing if one reads just one page a day. At the end is a story about a church who has a collection of relics of signs from people from Purgatory, plus a number of prayers that are useful and related to the book's topic.
Each day's page has a Bible quote, a text relating to something about Purgatory, a reflection peace and the "Eternal Rest..." prayer. There might be a feeling of some repetition, but then the daily-read format is preferrable anyway. :) The purpose is to help those who are there, and gain for self by avoiding or getting less time there by helping the souls in Purgatory and by practising certain virtues.
If you have read Tassone's other books, this is a great adding to that. Otherwise, I recommend reading some of the other books - at least "Praying With The Saints For The Holy Souls In Purgatory" (which I think is the best if one reads only one of Tassone's books). But that said, this is a good '365 days' book on this subject.
It only takes a few minutes to reflect on the Holy Souls and to pray for them, so start reading this book if it is on your "to read" list. Remember, in response to our prayers, the Holy Souls can also pray for you. Who doesn't need some holy friends praying for them?
Three months into DAY by DAY reflections. There are 365 reflections. Amazing book. A real eye opener for those who want to Make a difference for suffering souls. The reflections are amazing.
This was an excellent daily devotional to read. I learned a great deal about what the Catholic Church and early fathers taught on the doctrine of purgatory. At the same time it saddened me that the church today does not speak about this doctrine very often, which has led most Catholics unaware of all the holy souls presently in this state of purification that can be aided by our assistance. I also shudder to think of all those from other religions, who have lost this early church teaching, who have died and have no one to pray for or offer sacrifices for them to assist them.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace, Amen.
A very well written and thoughtful devotional. I felt at times that the different authorities Tassone quotes would contradict each other on small matters, but if that doesn't sum up the catholic Catholic Church I don't know what does. If you feel called towards a devotion to the holy souls this is a great place to start.
Love this book! I read the whole book, even for the days left in this month, so I would not forget to post finished book. I will be re-reading the dates of Dec. 17-31, 2017. When 2018 arrives I plan on starting the book again for the new year.
Prayer for the holy souls! Eternal rest grant them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon the. May they rest in peace. Amen.
Fantastic companion for use in daily prayer or meditation that provides inspirational and thought provoking ideas on Purgatory and the Catholic view of the after-life. Referenced in verse, the daily readings beautifully written, reassuring and yet sometimes frightening. Many goosebumps were raised in reading these passages. This will remain on my nightstand for continued use and reflection.
This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to pray for the souls in purgatory, learn more about purgatory, learn about saints or others who can tell us about purgatory, for each day of the year. It is so powerful I want to read it again, as it has short but powerful reflections each day.
I used this devotional as part of my daily prayer routine for a year.
An incredible book filled with meaningful reflections. Make sure to pray for all the dead and remember your last days so you may stand worthy before the judgement seat of Christ.
This little, but mighty, devotional book has been a huge blessing to me. It has helped me understand death and redemptive suffering in a deeper way. Every Catholic should read and pray with it!
God has gifted me with the mission to pray for the holy souls. I just love this book which I purchased back in 2014 and continue to pray with daily! The holy souls have become near and dear to my heart through these years, and have been generous in their prayers for my needs and intentions!
I refer to this book everyday on my lunch break. It's a quick daily reading and helps me with my devotion to praying for the souls in purgatory. This is my second year of doing this.
