Gunmetal Olympus #1.5

Memory of Olympus

Rate this book
Decadent cyberpunk cities. Giant mechs and monsters. Greek mythology retold like no other. Before the rampage of the colossi, before the killer cyborg Persephone was made... there was the rule of the Titans.

Under the iron fists of the Twelve Titans, Elysium glitters, casting its cruel light upon the face of Olympus. The city grows in leaps and bounds, the terraforming projects expand by the day, and the Titan's children—organic and otherwise—are each tasked with conquering the planet in the Titans' name. But unbeknownst to them, their children chafe under their tyranny, and little by little the flickers of revolt ignite...

Memory of Olympus is a collection of short stories taking place during the Titans' rule and after the Titanomachy, where the gods find themselves, establish themselves—and go to war against their makers. This also includes a preview of the next Gunmetal Olympus book, The Persephone Effect.

This was everything I wanted in a Gunmetal Olympus prequel. I ate this book up like Krysothemis would devour a sister.

This snapshot of characters left me smiling, crying, and slamming my fist on the table.

More! I need MORE!

More sicko lesbians! MORE!

Ughhhhhh this was so good. If you liked the first book, I promise you'll love this. Can't believe I am caught up on all the Maria Ying books. I am lost until the Persephone Effect

Memory of Olympus is, somehow, as compelling as it’s prequel (The Hades Calculus) and it’s the perfect approach to tell the stories the first book set up to be told eventually.

Seeing more of young Zeus and Hades and their sisterly love, finally getting to know Leuce and Leto, and getting to see the flames of revolution rising within their eyes. The first chapter starts out with a bang, and yet, all the other short-stories are as good as this one. We get to see Hephaestus and the beginning of zer love story with Hades, and also zer bittersweet feelings for zer now dead ex-pilot Euterpe (the final dream scene made me cry a lot).

We also get to see our favorite hungry girl Khrysotemis and her cute cannibalism hobby, she’s just a girl! And Adrastus too, by the lens of Callisto Khan, who was such a perfect addition to the Maria Ying team! “A Weed in the Flowerbed” made me truly understand our dear Mark Three in ways I never even expected too. The part were he feels connected to hades as he realizes he’s trans made me sob and it’s peak character setup, knowing everything that comes after.

“Memory of Olympus” is literally perfect, everything is masterfully crafted to expand even more a so endearing world, and I’m so glad I can experience it as a whole! If you read “The Hades Calculus” you’ll for sure love this one too, it’s the perfect tie-in between it’s predecessor and it’s sequel (“The Persephone Effect”). I wish more authors would expand their worlds like Maria Ying did here, it’s fantastic to be alive and read all of this!

A very well done interlude, with stories that flesh out both the world and the characters. While it did not hold my attention the same way as Hades Calculus, it was nonetheless very well written, engaging, and enjoyable. I eagerly await The Persephone Effect.

Zeus spends her entire life longing to be merged with her sister Hades as one being, as she perceives they were in the womb. This leads to problematic interactions (to say the least). Though it is clear she loves her sister, part of me wonders, did Hades purposefully keep distance between them because she knew of this longing?
Edit: I will be reading Callisto Khan’s companion novel to prepare myself for them joining Maria Ying to write The Persephone Effect. And i thoroughly enjoyed the sneak peek chapter of the same!!!
