My favorite page is the police page on 17, and the leaf page on 19.

I like the steps that the German Shepherd was walking on.

I learned that German Shepherds are happiest with their families.

The German Shepherd jumping in the snow was cool.

I liked reading the Abdokids code, that was fun.

German Shepherds is an excellent introduction to the breed of German Shepherds for beginning readers. The simple text is both informative and relevant and the large colorful photos are well chosen to match the text. A young researchers could easily get quality information from this text for research or just pleasure reading. The text includes: table of contents, more facts at the end, a glossary, index and a code for the ABDO website where the student can find more information and activities.

German Shepherds is an informational book about german shepherds and what breed traits they have as dogs. Instead of Illustrations, this book directly uses photographs. I don't really feel this was a great book or necessarily a bad book either. When I was a child, I would have loved this book because i loved to learn facts and information, but out of fascination rather than entertainment. There was no real plot or story happening in this book meaning there was no 'message' or feeling to have towards it. It only really offered factual information to learn from. The design of the book seems more like a brochure, however, and communicates information quickly the way that adults see things. Children see things much differently and brochure graphic design is not really a strong way to communicate to a child. I do think this is a great book for a classroom though! Kids are actual sponges when it comes to this kind of stuff, and it stimulates a passion for learning. When children like to learn, they will do better in school and potentially have a more successful future.
