‘A Court of Thorns and Roses' meets 'The Bachelorette' in this new, exciting fantasy romance!
Eight Fae fight for my hand in marriage. They’re willing to kill for it. But if they discover my secret, my future husband might kill me too.
The King of Brookmere has decreed his daughter is to marry—which means, despite my protests, he’s enacted an archaic tradition, summoning powerful Fae from across the land to compete for my hand in marriage. And more importantly, the throne.
Eight fae will fight in the deadly trials, braving formidable magic and each other to prove themselves worthy of the crown. Including the arrogant, shadow-wielding Kade Blackthorn, who arrived out of nowhere and appears to have far more abilities than he should. In truth, all I’ve ever wanted is for someone to love me for who I am, despite my secrets. An ally. An equal.
While one of the contenders might become my husband, a trusted friend is the last title any of them can win. These men are willing to do anything for power. If they discover my secret, that I’m an heir with no magic, then we’re all doomed.
Blooms of Darkness is the first book of the Broken Prophecy Series, a slow burn, NA / adult romantasy. Readers are encouraged to review the list of content notes inside before diving into this enemies-to-lovers, shadow daddy romance.

You know when you immediately start a new book after your last and you say “I’ll just read a couple of chapters before bed”. Yeah well, I did that with this book at 1 am and literally could not put it down. I was hooked from the second I opened the book and read the author’s dedication. Add in a map and I’m salivating. Then I hit the prologue and was immediately engrossed in the story. The first two chapters are so action packed, it’s impossible not to want to read more. The world is built with fantastic imagery, immediately making the reader feel like they’re part of Brookmere and the Hidden Henchman’s crew. The characters, gifted elemental fae, are so likable and relatable.
The mental health struggles that Lana is going through is heart wrenching and represented in such an emotional way: feelings of being useless, boxed in a cage, flashbacks, putting on a mask and hiding who you are to escape trauma.
This book is the start of an epic fantasy tale and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out!
“I am Illiana Dresden. I am stronger than the darkness within me.”
Tropes & Vibes 💜 Enemies to Lovers 💜 Secret Identity / Prophecies 💜 Gifted Elemental Fae 💜 Shadow Daddy 💜 Who Did This To You? 💜 Morally Grey MMC 💜 Stabby FMC 💜 Slow Burn 💜 Pet Names 💜 Marriage Trials 💜 Mental Health Representation
“Whatever comes, you are the most unexpected and beautiful thing that has ever happened to me. I crave you constantly. I need you constantly. I want to be selfish with your time. I don’t want you anywhere near the other contenders.”
“I am stronger than the darkness within me.” “Careful, Little Rebel. Violent words tend to lure me closer, not push me away.” “I do not want to be a princess in a glass cage.” “Tits and daggers!”
Great first book in a new romantasy series. I can’t wait to read more!
The book follows princess Illiana, the heir of Brookmare, who is born without magic. I liked her as a character. Even though she didn’t have magic, she wasn’t helpless or weak but instead she was a strong character who was ready to do anything to help her people.
The MMCs, Ian and Kade, were different but both interesting characters. I liked how Ian had been there for Illiana all her life and how he knew basically everything about her and was there to help her when needed (not that she needed any man to save her).
Kade, on the other hand, was mysterious shadow daddy, perfect romantasy book boyfriend. I hope we learn more about him in the next book. The banter and chemistry between him and Illiana was great.
The storyline was engaging and kept me hooked. I read this book in one sitting and was eager to know what was happening. There were some plot twists that took me by surprise.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
“I don’t know if I’d make a worthy King, Little Rebel, but I do know you were created to rule a kingdom. Fates, you could bring an army of Fae to their knees. Your role should never be to sit idly by anyone’s side. Not even mine”
I finished my arc of Blooms of Darkness two nights ago and ya’ll…. So FREAKING GOOD!!! It has ALL my favorite tropes and I am still thinking about this book. WELL…. Maybe I am actually thinking more about KADE…lol
The story, the world-building, the friendship, THE BANTER, the suspense, the slow growing tension between the MMC and FMC… is just
If you are looking for a new shadow daddy to add to your list… I got you because let me tell you KADE BLACKTHORN is fire. This man and his shadows has moved up to my #1 spot (sorry Xaden) He is mysterious, he is morally grey, and he is a man worth loving.
And the spice be spicin’...
So many characters worth knowing and loving.
I HIGHLY Recommend this book. I can't wait for book 2, i needed it like yesterday! Also can't wait to add this beauty to my book trophy shelves.
Anna and Helen are amazing, I just adore them. I was chatting with them as I was reading, asking them to help picture Lucien the stray better and they so kindly helped describe him more. They let me send them my theories and thoughts as I was reading and I just gotta say, Thank you for that. It made this ARC reading experience even better. Thank you again for this ARC and getting the opportunity to read this early.
PS: “Tits and Daggers” is now my new favorite phrase
Blooms of Darkness surprised me in the best way possible, far surpassing my expectations! The plot was so gripping that not once did I ever lose interest. So many fun elements converge seamlessly, making for an incredibly delightful romantasy read!
The FMC Lana was an easy character with whom to empathize. She has a traumatic history and still suffers from the horrors she experienced by getting lost in those memories. Yet, as she attempts to heal from her past, she remains a very caring and compassionate person to her friends and the people of her kingdom, and it’s truly admirable. Most of the story takes place within the castle walls, but there are scenes where Lana is with the lesser Fae, and in these moments, we get a glimpse of her genuinely cherishing her people. It’s where she feels accepted and part of a family, and I loved seeing this side of her.
Kade, where do I even begin with you? I really thought I had no more space in my heart for shadow-wielding men, but I was proven wrong. He’s protective of Lana pretty much from the get-go, and their relationship is an addicting one. It’s a decently slow slow-burn, but I think I would’ve enjoyed more waiting time, especially since this is a series. On the other hand, it makes sense for the romance to happen somewhat early so the ending could be more impactful. And friends, it was certainly successful in that regard.
There are some other things I loved that I want to note. First, the shadow magic! Whenever those shadows came out to play, I knew I'd be blushing. I like how they sometimes had a mind of their own and gravitated towards Lana, always being there to comfort her and make her feel safe. The marriage trials were a fun addition to the story, and I liked the amount of page time they had. They didn’t override the plot and were entertaining chapters. And lastly, Ian! I could honestly talk about him forever. He’s purely thoughtful and considerate towards Lana, ready to lay down his life for her with no questions asked. If any harm comes to him in the next book, I will actually riot.
I need all my romantasy lovers to jump onto this series. You don’t want to miss out on this one!
This was FANTASTIC! Every single part of this book was perfection! And the ending… I mean my heart can’t even handle it!
This darker romantasy was had trials to win the princess’s hand in marriage. It had a delicious slow burn. It has a sexy AF shadow daddy who’s shadows had a mind of their own. We had besties with great banter and unique magic throughout.
Also for being a fantasy book it was easy to get into! No super long world building yet you could use all of your senses so well to see the people, the creatures, the magic, and the lay of the land.
I had the absolute honour of receiving this absolute MASTERPIECE of a book as an ARC and holy smokes. This book completely exceeded any and all expectations that I had. I am literally writing this in complete shock over the roller-coaster this book was. I had high hopes, and Anna and Helen knocked them out of the ball park and then some! Also the cover is one of my all-time favourites!
First and foremost, Xaden from fourth Wing, please kindly step aside because a new shadow daddy is reigning supreme (don't come for me but it's facts). Kade is absolutely devine, and I love this man and will die on this hill. I loved him and everything about him.
Lana is an absolutely incredible FMC who is such a bad ass and has such a kind and caring soul and absolutely deserves to be queen and needs to be protected at all costs!
Ian, oh my sweet boy! I loved him and everything he stood for and loved his friendship with Lana and honestly thought they were end game, but this golden retriever of a man doesn't quite compare to Kade.
I won't go too much into the story because I want... no, I implore you to add this to your TBR and read it the second you can as you won't be disappointed with it! I do warn you will need tissues and lots of them! ( I still haven't forgiven them for a certain part, but the spicy scenes, particularly chapter 30, make up for it)... go on.. add it.. right now...little rebel 💜
One of the fantasies you really must read! Altough for most part of the book you can say it was a bit predictive, last 30% of the book is here to shake you up! Be ware it ends on cliffhanger, but as I’ve said, if you are fae fantasy lover, this one is for you
It was SO HARD to put this down and adult when I needed to. I thoroughly enjoyed this read all the way to the very end- there wasn’t a moment I struggled with.
In BOD, we follow the first person POV of Lana, the crown princess of a fae kingdom struggling for reasons that are being withheld from her. And because she’s magicless, her only way of helping her people is masked and in secret alongside her best friend, Ian. When she and Ian are ambushed on a drop, they meet two helpful and mysterious newcomers, Kade and Storm.
Back in the castle, Lana’s father is ill and soon incites the long forgotten “marriage trials” to quickly find her a husband. As 8 contenders fight to become her husband and king, her best friend and surprise appearance, Kade, battle to the finish. But it’s not just the trials that are deadly. It’s the days in between.
Gosh, I loved this story so much. The found family was just absolutely divine. Ian is a man and friend everyone should be gifted with. Kade is now a fav book boyfriend 100%. I loved all the layers and angles we got to see of him. I can’t wait to see more. And Lana, she was so relatable and I loved how she battled her panic attacks/ptsd AND how her friends supported her through it:
“I am Illiana Dresden, and I am stronger than the darkness within me”.
This book has alllll the angsty tension, witty and flirty banter, action, hidden identities, and plot twists you could ever want. Plus, a he-washes-her-hair, “who did this to you”, mysterious shadow daddy!
Other tropes you may find in BOD are forced proximity, marriage (selection) trials, prophecies, banter, hidden identities, mental health rep, found family, spice 2.5/5 and what an ending!!
Thank you so much for this gifted arc. I CANNOT WAIT for book two!
Wow, this book was SO good! This was my first ARC read and it did not disappoint! The book was medium-fast paced which I loved and the FMC was so likable! She is a Fae princess born without powers, which she has to keep a secret. There is a darkness taking over the kingdom which she is trying to save, all while men are competing in these marriage trials to become her husband and the King. The MMC was a dark, shadow wielder who was arrogant but you couldn’t help but love him. There are also some awesome friendships that make you love those characters even more. There is slow burn, enemies to lovers, who did this to you, and so much more. Some parts were a little predictable but there were still so many pieces that weren’t predictable at all and it ended on a crazy cliffhanger that has me already wanting to read the next book!!
Blooms of Darkness is book 1 in The Broken Prophecy. A new fantasy romance series by Anna Applegate and Helen Domico!
“Tits and daggers” my new favorite phrase from our illustrious Princess!!
Oh my gods, Anna and Helen, what have you done to me?!! This book was magnificent!! It gripped me straight off the bat and really never let go! So many emotions! So many twists and turns! So many vile characters 😱
The world these two created was dark and beautiful, full of Fae, vicious creatures and even darker beings we have yet to discover the origin of. The plot was exciting and engaging and well paced. The story is so full of gut wrenching emotion that had me feeling all the feels.
The characters were so well fleshed out. I truly enjoyed the development of each one of them. Lana, the FMC, has endured much trauma in her life at the hands of despicable advisor. She realistic and completely relatable! She’s feisty and a bit stabby with quite the foul mouth 😂. But she’s lovable and holds her friends and family close to her heart. I absolutely loved the mental health representation the authors included in Lana’s creation. It is something I could empathize with her over and feel all that she felt in those moments as if I were right there with her. Kade, the MMC, what can I say *swoon* 🫠. He’s dark and broody and ever so protective of Lana. He’s been added to my list of shadow daddy book boyfriends for sure. Their relationship is full of witty banter and snarky quips; with so much tension and angst! The burn is slooow, but when they finally give in to their desires and it hits, it’s -🔥🔥!!!
I enjoyed this book so very much! The found family Lana has surrounded herself with was incredible! That ending though, OMG! It will have you reeling! I cannot wait for the next book!! This book has everything you need in a fantasy romance - fae, magic, dark vicious beings, enemies to lovers, slow burn, who did this to you, deadly trials, morally grey MMC and a stabby dagger wielding FMC. Be mindful though, and don’t step off that cliff the authors have left us edging on!!
"I don't know if I'd make a worthy King, Little Rebel, but I do know you were created to rule a kingdom. Fates, you could bring an army of Fae to their knees.”
Hear me out! The Bachelorette, but make it fantasy. What a mix right? 😂 I absolutely loved this though and cannot tell you the amount of times I smiled while reading this.
This book is easy to read, but very well written. The marriage trials are giving fantasy The Bachelorette vibes, but it’s entertaining as hell and so well done. Not only that, the characters are fantastic! I loved so many of them for different reasons and don’t think I can even choose a favorite! I’m definitely looking forward to the next book after that big cliffhanger of an ending.
Surprisingly mesmerising right from the start! 💜⚔️ I thought this was going to be so good and I still got so surprised by this book, but don’t know exactly why. It’s just something so captivating about the whole plot, vibe and writing.
Thank you so much Anna Applegate & Helen Domico for the eARC🫶🏼 This is the first book in The Broken Prophecy Series and I’m so happy to dwell into this new series, bring it on! 🙌🏼
‘With my secrets in his back pocket, I’d do well to not give him anything else to use to his advantage. Like my damned heart.’
⚔ NA/adult romantasy ⚔️ Royal Marriage trials ⚔️ Secret identity ⚔️ Prophecy ⚔️ Found family ⚔️ Anxiety representation ⚔️ Stabby FMC ⚔️ Morally grey Shadow Daddy MMC ⚔ Enemies-to-lovers ⚔ Slow Burn 🌶️🌶️🌶️ ⚔ Who did this to you? ⚔ Swoony pet names
‘In a world where power was currency, what good would a queen be who had none?’
I was hooked quite early in this and it gives off a fairytale vibe that I love! The world was spellbinding in a way I didn’t expect, but absolutely had me mesmerising! The magic is very easy to understand and I liked how the plot drives me forward. I did not see everything coming even though I tried really hard. I think I guessed just a couple things right and I read a lot of romantasy book. It had my interest from beginning to end!
“Don’t you worry about my knees, Kade. The only thing falling will be you, onto my sword.” “Careful, Little Rebel,” he said. “Violent words tend to lure me closer, not push me away.”
The characters were all amazing, banter and relationships giving so much throughout. I love the found family mixed with uncertainty with trust and anxiety/trauma. It was so relatable with several of the characters. The MCs is no different, bringing all the sweet talk, heat and banter right from the first meeting. I’m so happy for the last chapters that was longer than expected and I can’t wait to read the next book 🔥
“I don’t know if I’d make a worthy King, Little Rebel, but I do know you were created to rule a kingdom. Fates, you could bring an army of Fae to their knees. Your role should never be to sit idly by anyone’s side. Not even mine.”
Ok hear me out. This was a very tropey, typical romantasy. It hit all the notes and was kind of predictable. The ending really threw me for a loop with the nonstop action tangled with some crazy twists. But. It. Was. So. GOOD!!! I couldn’t put it down once I picked it up. If I had more time in the day I would have flown through it. The authors did an excellent job of sucking me in immediately.
I loved the characters. Iliana was the perfect strong princess with a devastating secret who didn’t take shit from anyone. Kade was the sasshole shadow daddy everyone loves. Ian and Kalliah were the fun sidekicks. The plot REALLY picked up the last 30% of the book; however, it was fast paced throughout.
This is a book I highly recommend you pick up when you’ve finished reading something really heavy. Does this deal with heavy themes? Yes- death, torture, ptsd, anxiety attacks, and other things. Are these themes dealt with sensitivity, levity, and in a realistic way? Yes. It’s also spicy. In the best way.
I need these two to write the next book faster. That ending had me reeling.
Thank you to Anna Applegate and Helen Domico for allowing me to read this early in exchange for an honest review. I loved it 🥰
Welcome to Brookmere, where the stakes are high and death looms around every corner.
I devoured this book, it was fast paced, spicy and filled with magic.
I loved Lana so much, she was the perfect FMC. The story revolves around her precarious position as the heir to Brookmere, where her lack of magic is a closely guarded secret. The tension is palpable from the start, as Lana navigates a world where her survival depends on a facade of perfection. She fights hard to prove her worth to everyone and never wants to feel like a failure.
Now move over Azriel, there’s a new shadow daddy in town…Kade Blackthorn. He is dark and enigmatic, he’s a mystery you want to solve or just sleep with 🤷♀️. The enemies to lovers tension between Kade and Lana is electric and drives the stories intrigue. The slow burn romance is perfect and when it all comes together (sort of) it’s like a reward 🥵
Also let me just mention my favourite side character ever, Ian. He was freaking adorable 🥰 he did everything to love and protect Lana no matter what he lost in the process.
This book is a must read for all my romantasy girlies, but be warned it does end on a cliffhanger.
✨ I received this book in exchange for an honest review ✨
This book is so fantastic and the twists and turns it takes just kept me on edge the entire time. The first 20% felt like “yes, it is building-up and something exciting is coming” and after that I was like wow, what a take. I have read many books with marriage trials for the MMC and the females vying for it but I don’t seem to remember one with FMC and this one was just what I needed to read in a fantasy story.
It was full of suspense, conspiracy, so much was happening at once and everyone had their own agenda to follow and fulfill. There were sad moments, there were emotional ones, and then there were exciting ones too where your heartbeat just skyrockets to see what is going to happen next. The journey was full of emotions and it overall made me happy.
It is my first time reading from the authors and I can proudly say that I am a fan now. I will be stalking them to know when is the second book coming and how Lana is going to be, what will happen now since the cliffhanger was pretty devastating. I don’t know how you will feel about it but it was bittersweet for me. I was sad but I was thrilled as well to see something new happening.
Lana is amazing and in the first 20% of the story, I knew that I would be going to love her character very much. Her fierce personality is hats-off commendable. The friend Ian is saviour and he was immediately in my good books. And I was very curious to know more about Kade. He came as a mystery man and made me look for him whenever Lana was at some risk. I kept thinking he must be coming in the next page. It was a great read.
The mental struggle Lana is facing here and there has such a positive vibe to it that she fights it with all she has. She believes in herself and she knows what she wants from her life. Sometimes my heart is devastated by all this but her spirit lifts it up and gives new confidence to think positively. I highly recommend all the fantasy lovers to read this. This book has all the elements for a story to make it an awesome read.
WOW. Just WOW. As a fantasy and romance lover this ticks pretty much all my boxes. If Fourth Wing, From Blood and Ash, Bridgerton and Robin Hood had a baby, this is what it would look like. There’s a shadow daddy, some bodyguard action, fae magic, trials, a bit of a love triangle, an evil power spreading through the land, class division, and a whole lot of good vs evil. It got me GOOD.
We follow the story of Illiana, or Lana as she is most often called, a princess who’s gearing up to take the crown from her ailing father, who also must choose a husband to rule alongside her from the winners of a group of trials. She also happens to be the leader of a small group of rebels who redirect palace goods to help those in need after a mysterious evil begins spreading across their lands.
The characters in this book are so well written. The villain is utterly repulsive and chilling in his evil ways; Lana is likeable and funny but gosh shes got her demons and they hit deep. Ian and Kalliah are stoic and loyal and I loved their little side stories immensely. And then we have Kade. A new shadow daddy to adore (😍😍😍) who has jumped immediately to the top contenders on my best book boyfriends list.
Brookmere is where the story takes place and I’m so interested to learn more about this kingdom. We get a bit of a taste but I’m certain there’ll be more in the next book, as well as a certain other kingdom that I cannot wait to delve into.
This first book in the series has set up what I hope proves to be an absolutely epic story. There is so much promise of some excellent adventures after the little twists at the end, and I cannot wait til the second book arrives next year.
Thank you @authorannaapplegate and @authorhelendomico for kindly providing me with an ARC of this most amazing book! It’s available NOW and I urge you to read it immediately!!
✨“I am Princess Illiana Dresden, and I am stronger than the darkness within me.”✨
This book had me hooked from page one. The world building was stunning, the characters are written so well they feel like old friends, the banter had me CACKLING and the suspense had me on the edge of my seat ( much to the dismay of my cat )
I absolutely adore Illiana. A strong and deeply caring character who see’s the good in people despite the traumas of her past still haunting her. She has the most wholesome and hilarious friendships and strives to help her people despite the true danger that it continues to put her in. If you love strong feisty FMC’s then you’ll absolutely adore her too.
Kade, just when I thought I couldn’t fall for yet another shadow wielding, mysterious, morally grey man..you came along to prove me wrong. This man had me intrigued from his first appearance and slowly hooked me more as the book progressed. I love the way he’s so protective of Illiana from the get go, how their sarcatically hilarious banter is ever present and the way their tension slowly builds. Honestly it really didn’t take me long to fall for Kade and boy, did i fall hard. I love his snarky attitude and the way he’s so quick to engage with his cocky comments but also slowly allows himself to show a softer side when caring and supporting our princess.
Honestly, there is so much i love about this book, the stunningly written slow burn romance, the hot and heavy spice that was FULLY worth the wait. The amazing side characters who wormed their way into my heart just as quickly as the two mains did. The well thought out magic types and the fascinating descriptions. I love a book that makes me feel like I’m right there, like the minute i open that book I’m transported to a whole new world and that is exactly what these authors have accomplished. I could literally go on for hours about how obsessed i am with this book.
If you’re looking for a romance fantasy, with a morally grey shadow daddy, a feisty and strong take NO shit FMC, side characters that feel like old friends and a gripping story that will have you on the edge of your seat unable to put the book down? Then Blooms of Darkness is for you!!
🗡️ “I don’t know if I’d make a worthy King, Little Rebel, but i do know you were created to rule a Kindgom. Fates, you could bring an army of fae to their knees. Your role should never be to sit idly by anyone’s side. Not even mine.”🗡️
I loved this book. I'm blown away by the cliffhanger and can't wait until book 2 releases!!
The plot was fast paced and kept me up until 3am reading because I literally couldn't stop myself (I have bad self control about reading okay shhhh). I loved watching Lana develop through the story and the rep for dealing with crap self worth and anxiety/nightmares was so refreshing. I love seeing mental health rep in fantasy novels--these characters deal with a whole lot of scary stuff and shouldn't be just brushing it off like some of them do in other books.
One of my favorite parts about this main character is how she sticks her foot in her mouth around her love interest. She 1000% accidentally opens herself up for innuendos regularly and I've never related to a main character so much about that because boyyyy I'm bad at words around a crush. And Kade doesn't miss the opportune moments for it, either. I also loved how annoyed the people around them got at their bickering and bantering. It felt so realistic to how people would actually feel around the back-and-forth between them and it made me groan and giggle audibly quite a lot.
I also went into this ARC *knowing* it was marriage trials trope oriented and still gasped a little when they were announced 🤦🏼♀️
Oh, Kade. Such a great balance of teasing Lana and making her feel truly special even if she didn't understand it at the time. His shadow powers are also unique and interesting which is amazing since the magic system is also unique and interesting. And don't get me started on the use of a prophecy.
This book is truly special. And out today! Get a copy, you'll thank me
The characters were great and had such fun banter between them. I'm dying for more already!
There was intrigue and some wild revelations in the end that kept me awake in the middle of the night when I finished it. The magic was a little chaotic, so I'm really interested in learning more about it.
I have so many questions about what is going to happen next.
Read if you love: -Shadow Daddy -Strong princess -Found family -Trauma -Banter -Marriage trials -Fae
I received an eARC from the authors. My thoughts are entirely my own.
I was expecting a stuck-up spoiled princess in love with someone already, with a horrible father and mother who were forcing her to get married because whoever she loved wasn't "worthy" of her or high enough in society. INSTEAD I GOT A BADASS WITH BADASS PLATONIC BESTIES AND A LYING SHADOW DADDY WHO STOLE MY HEART FROM THE GET-GO.
How did I know he was a lying shadow daddy? I didn't know, exactly, but I suspected. What I suspected was partially right, but the way everything went down was absolutely wild. This book has incredibly well-thought-out pacing. It goes from fast, to slow, back to fast, giving you wonderfully delicious breathers that hit you right in your bones and make you fall in love with the characters when they're not fighting for their lives.
The world building in this book was well done, and I especially loved how different places would illicit an emotional response, this was because the interpersonal communication between the characters, and the intrapersonal communication of the heroine were so wonderfully done. The book really concentrated on building the characters, and explaining who they were by their actions and thoughts. The village/town outside of the castle was such a special and loving place for Lana, that whenever it was mentioned, I felt warm and fuzzy inside. I loved seeing how Lana realized her worth and the love people held for her through the book. She always had the little voice in her head telling her negativities, but her people always showed her how wonderful she was.
The ending of the book is traumatic, not gonna lie. Not only does the villain reveal himself (we knew, as readers, he was the baddest guy from the get-go), but what hurts the most is that Lana didn't realize the depth of how awful he was. THEN we get the trauma of getting Kade's point of view of the battle, and your heart breaks because he is asked to do the unthinkable...and then Lana *sees* the unthinkable and it's just...wow. What a mess. What a huge heartbreaking mess.
I can't wait for the next book. I devoured this novel and even dreamt about it when I slept last night. I have so many feelings and I am now in a tail-spin trying to figure out how to go on with my life.
Excellent writing. Incredible characters Horrific villain Insanely deep problems to solve Absolutely SIZZLING spice (the scenes were SO well written. It was amazing. They weren't only physical, but emotional as well)
First off, thank you so much to Anna Applegate and Helen Domico for allowing me to be an ARC reader! This book is absolutely amazing. Lana, the FMC, has a personality I feel many people can relate to. She struggles to find her inner strength, but she never gives up! I also loved the fact that she has a male BFF and he’s not the typical alphahole that you expect in most romantasy books.
You may think you don’t have room in your heart for another shadow daddy.. but I promise you, you will after reading Blooms of Darkness🥵 The MMC is absolute perfection!
The world building is immaculate. The plot is without holes. And the spice is HOT with just the right amount of build up. It’s been a while since I’ve shed a tear reading a book, but this one got me.
The ending threw me right off the cliff and I’m already needing book 2 when book 1 isn’t even technically out yet 🫣
I highly recommend this book if the review above didn’t already give that away!!
An exciting action-packed fantasy that pulled me in from the start. There were lots of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through.
Lana was a determined compassionate woman who struggles to find her strength. I enjoyed her realness and battles with her issues. I can’t wait to see her grow into the woman she always was!
Kade was mysterious and arrogant yet attentive and protective! I can’t wait to read more about him. He did get a couple of chapters in the end with his POV but I would to know more of his thoughts!
Then the both of them together… they were so fun and entertaining to read. I enjoyed watching their relationship evolve and blossom. However the ending leaves lots of question marks and I can’t wait to see where things go!
There were deadly marriage trials, chosen one, prophecy, banter, shadow daddy MMC, princess FMC, unexpected love, loyal friends, hurt/comfort, forced proximity, ‘who did this to you?’, and so much more packed into this start to what promises to be an epic series!
I love books about prophecies, magic, and trials. This book kind of gave me The Selection (by Kiera Cass) vibes but darker, with magic, and with men vying to marry the princess.
Kade and Lana’s story was captivating and enjoyable. It is hard not to enjoy an overly confident morally grey shadow daddy MMC who calls her ‘little rebel.’ And Lana is stabby stab stab type of princess who has a big heart and is loyal to those closest to her. She is in her younger 20s, and the dialogue reflects that. This is a crazy enemies-to-lovers-back to enemies’ type of ride with these two, but I enjoyed the ride. I need more Kade in my life and I cannot wait to see what happens in book two after that ending.
Bravo! A perfect first novel in The Broken Prophecy Series 🫶 Anna and Helen brought everything I love to this story.
🔪Vigilante Princess but she's Magicless 🖤Unwanted Marriage Trials 🔪Dark and Tortured Pasts 🖤Shadow Daddy 🔪Killer Supporting Characters 🖤A Blight Growing in the Kingdom 🔪All the Angst 🖤Society where Magic is Power
I just love Lana 😍 As a secretly magicless princess, she had such a tortured past. Lana now lives with PTSD from all that has happened to her. Though it's not holding her back and o KY pushes her to be stronger and do right by her kingdom that is suffering.
But, her father is sick, and he means to see her married to a strong and worthy man. Hence, we have marriage trials. Her best friend and personal guard enters along with other figure heads from the kingdom. But a surprise suitor, a figure from her side dealings, shows up as for the trials as well. And so goes the plot!
The plot and all side characters were well developed. The story has a clear direction with lots of twists and turns along the way. I couldn't put my Kindle down. I will be buying my trophy copy while eagerly awaiting for book #2 🩷
This book right here, I need more right now and everyone needs to add it to their TBRs stat. It has easily made the list of my favorite books this year! Blooms of Darkness is Book 1 of the Broken Prophecy series. Thank you so much Anna & Helen for my eARC!
If you are a fan of Fantasy Romance with Hidden Identities, Shadow Daddies, Found Family, Banter and so much more then this book is for you!
In this story we meet Illiana, Princess of Brookmere who has a secret, she is the only person to have no magic in the kingdom and the sole heir to the Brookmere throne and with a prophecy pointing to her being the one to save them all. But Princess by day and Hidden Henchmen by night, she doesn’t let not having magic stand in her way to help her people.
Until one night on a run she meets the mysterious Kade and Storm, when they are all attacked by a darkness plaguing the kingdom, these two seem to know a lot more about the darkness than they are letting on.
But when her father decides to enact the marriage trials, her sneaking around must be put in the back burner and men from around the kingdom come to win her hand in marriage. Lana is not happy and when she sees a familiar face…Kade, this renews that anger, why is he vying for her hand?
You come to love the friendships that Lana has with her personal guard Ian and handmaiden Kalliah, along with the healer Elisabeth, Leif and Corbin. Kade and Lana’s chemistry is undeniable from their first encounter but it is a lovely slow burn.
What I loved about Lana is she can stand on her own two feet while she is still learning to fight, but the love she has for Brookmere is unmatched. Kade is infuriating to Lana only because she can’t trust his motives but his shadows protect her subconsciously even when he is not meaning to comfort her.
There is so much action in the last quarter of the book and I am already anxiously awaiting to see what happens next!
This book was amazing. The Hunger Games but with magic and fae.
Princess Illiana's life was dictated by a prophecy that was told when she was a baby. Part of it includes finding her husband through the marriage trials, which is a tournament for men to compete in to win her hand and become king.
This book was entertaining and kept me hooked from the start. The FMC wasn't a damsel in distress. She was tough and stood her ground. The story had two MMC, but it wasn't a love triangle (which I dislike).
Blooms of Darkness: The Broken Prophecy Book 1. Authors: Anna Applegate and Helen Domico Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️.5/5
🗡️ Shadow Daddy 🖤💜 Enemies to Lovers 👸🏼 Strong FMC 💍👑 Royal Marriage Trials 🤫Court Secrets
In a world where power was currency, what good would a queen be who had none?
I was given the opportunity to read this as an ARC and oh my waffles friends this had me feeling ALLLLLLLLL the feels! I laughed, I cried, I swooned (“little Rebel”), I cringed (looking at you Freddie) and I raged!
Blooms of Darkness focuses on Princess Illiana Dresden aka Lana. What she lacks in magic she makes up for with major bada** energy! Think Scarlett from Lady of Darkness. She is constantly trying to be forced into a bubble but you know she has things to do so NONE OF THAT THANK YOU! Lana also has some of the best friends who (groaningly) help her along with her projects. However, PLOT TWIST! Lana is told by her parents that she needs a husband (you know she’s in her early 20’s and not getting any younger). Lana is like “thank you next” to this idea however, her dad (ya know the King) says too bad I’m ill do what I say! Which leads us to….THE MARRIAGE TRIALS! Thank Hunger Games meets The Selection. Eight young lads step forward to compete for the crown, I mean Lana’s hand, including Ian (bestie and Captain of the Guard), Frederich (I call him Freddie) as well as Kade Blackthorn (insert swooning gifs here!). Lana is upset with Ian because she doesn’t have those kinds of feelings for her bestie, overall NOT impressed with the others, especially Freddie, and extremely uncomfortable with the intense response to Kade. While dancing with Kade we learn they have met during one of Lana’s side projects. He is none other than the shadow wielding hottie who nicknamed her “ Little Rebel”. As the trails progress we learn of some nefarious ongoings at court. Freddie constantly makes us cringe, and the tension between Lana and Shadow Daddy Kade is delicious. However, will these two have a real chance when the baddies make their move?? Oh and there is a pesky prophecy hanging over all of them…
The world building and magic system in this book are just amazing! The character development allows readers to grow and feel everything right along with them. The banter will have you laughing out loud, the hard moments will have you sobbing, and the end will have you SCREAMING EXCUSE ME WHAT???? Overall I loved every minute of it and have spent the hours since finishing looking at Pinterest creating aesthetic boards and reels because I didn’t want to leave them. I cannot wait for book 2!
