Royals of Sondmark #3

The Midnight Princess

Rate this book
ALMA
I never lose my cool. Never. This princess has decorum to maintain, an arranged marriage to plan, and a rival nation to outmaneuver. But when my fiancé gets caught with his hands all over an Italian bikini model, my perfect life implodes. At such a time, what girl wouldn’t get a little drunk on New Year’s Eve and end up kissing a scruffy stranger? I’m embarrassed, bothered, and ready to put this brief, inexplicable lapse of judgment behind me. And then my mother introduces me to my next assignment—and the one man who makes me want to break all the rules.

JACOB
Thanks to a paternity suit, a DNA test, and a court ruling I still don’t fully understand, I go from running a bespoke furniture workshop to becoming the crown prince of Vorburg. Royal life—with its endless protocol and formal dress code—is a rough transition for a man who carries a ratty flannel in case of emergency carpentry. My father’s solution? A tutor. A gorgeous, uptight, completely off-limits ice princess. This has got to be a joke, because the princess standing in front of me is the same girl I kissed last night. The only problem? I’m not laughing.

I loved this royal romance so, SO much!
.
I love the history and folklore that Keira has created for her fictional kingdoms. It makes it hard to believe that Sondmark isn't a real place!
.
This book is chock-full of wit, tenderness, and romance.
.
Congrats to Keira on another masterpiece!

I AM ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED KEIRA HAS A STASH OF MAGIC SPRINKLES.

This book was so sweet it pinged my main artery. It was so achingly poignant I highlighted at least three quarters of the passages.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED THIS STORY SO MUCH.
I WILL READ IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

What do you get when you cross a golden retriever lumber snack with an ice princess who’s imbibed too much champagne?

A devastating, catapult your world off its axis kiss in an orangery.
A kiss cloaked in confessions and secrets and I don’t know you but my HEART DOES. It recognized you immediately as the answer to every question I’ve been afraid to ask and every dream I thought I was too grown-up to wish for.

Alma is her mother’s “right hand.” She toes the line with agonizing, relentless precision. She knows her duty and cauterizes herself around its boundaries.

Jacob didn’t want this life of obligation and denial. He’s afraid accepting the mantle of heir to Vorburg will make his reflection unrecognizable.

The clandestine kiss was fate’s way of sniggering at their presumption.

She’s been tasked with taming him.
He wants to rumple her composure.

The kiss is constant, banked heat between them. Magma and molten lava rumbling hidden fathoms deep. They feel its imprint every time their eyes meet. Every touch like an innocuous branding of mine and yours.

The tension and the surrender are exquisitely rendered.
The character development is flawless.
The love story is gorgeous and raw and vulnerable.

This book is like the amber tiara Jacob knows was destined to be laid against Alma’s brow. Full of precious, weightless moments of hope, desperation and tenacity.

I double-dog dare you to read this without laughing aloud at the apt depictions of human absurdity AND crying at its sheer wonder.

UTTER PERFECTION. 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌

I waited so long to read this and I'm kicking myself because it was that good. I didn't read books 1 and 2 and understood everything perfectly and wasn't lost.

Stars upon stars! This book had me captivated until the very very end. We didn’t just sail to the happily ever after, we felt every moment of the journey with our souls. I loved it!

The amount of world building and depth the fictional counties in this series has is incredible. They have their own language, histories and customs and it is so impressive. I enjoy the chapter titles and every single detail that just makes the experience that much better.

I am obsessed with the reverse makeover and Princess Diaries vibes this book had. The premise is utterly delightful and I enjoyed every minute.

I love how all the problems were resolved and I was clapping for Alma and Jacob and how they handled everything. I loved the love triangle that wasn’t actually a love triangle (but Jacob thought it was). Gotta love the longing and jealousy moments!

I highly recommend this book. It is the third book of the Royals of Sondmark series of standalone romances. I adore this series and can’t wait for the rest of the siblings’ books. @keiradominguezwrites writing is spectacular and I will shout this series to the rooftops until everyone reads them!

3.5/4 ⭐️

this was a really fun time! I am not going to lie, i was really concerned the first 30-40% of the book. I’m not a big historical romance girl, but i’ve been trying to read outside of my comfort zone to broaden my reading and find new things i enjoy and i am glad i did.

I read this book as a standalone, and it absolutely worked. I would even consider going back to read The Impossible Princess and The Winter Princess after finishing this one.

I really wanted a bit more action or angst build up in the first 20% of the book - but other than that i really did enjoy it!

It gave me princess diaries vibes but the princess teaching a future prince. I really wanted more of Alma and Jacob finally together - you only got the tiniest bit/sneak of them finally sneaking to be together and i wanted more!

It was overall quick, fun and would def return to the series and author again in the future!

The Midnight Princess is the third book in the Royals of Sondmark series. I had not personally read the previous books in the series and found that this read just fine as a standalone, though I did find myself wanting to go back and catch up on the rest of the series because I enjoyed this one so much!

Right from the start, this story drew me in. If you're a reader who doesn't like to wait for that first kiss--- this one is definitely for you! The story starts out with the usually put together Princess Alma having a little too much champagne and kissing a stranger on New Year's Eve--- a stranger who turns out to be the new crown prince of Vorburg, Jacob--- who she is tasked with teaching about all things royal to prepare him for his new role! I absolutely could not get enough of this story. Their chemistry is undeniable from the start, and I loved all the pining and struggle between heart and duty. It was so perfectly done. This book gave me a little bit of a Princess Diaries vibe--- but instead of an awkward teenager, we're instead given a rugged prince instead--- and I am absolutely one hundred percent here for it! If you're looking for a wonderful royal romance, this is absolutely one not to be missed!

The Midnight Princess is a closed-door romance with kisses only. There is some minor language throughout the story.

**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.

Everyone say "thank you, Keira Dominguez, for giving us yet another stunning royal romance."

I love this book. I love this book so much that I read it in one sitting. I made my lunch one handed so I could keep reading. That's how good this book is.

'The Midnight Princess' has everything you could ask for: phenomenal character relationships, beautiful writing, swoon-worthy romance, pillow-screaming tension, someone-pass-me-the-tissues moments, and more!

I sound so greedy, but I need the next book in the series immediately. And I seriously mean immediately. No one is able to pack so many emotions into a book like Keira Dominguez.

The books in this series are also clean romances. I normally don't gravitate towards those, but I have to make an exception for the Royals of Sondmark series and I hope all of my other spicy readers will too.

Thank you to the author for my e-copy. All opinions are my own.

P.S. I was serious when I said I need the next book now.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Jacob Gardner & Princess Alma
- Dual POV
- Princess FMC
- Royal Heir in training MMC
- Forced proximity
- Royal family drama
- Royal lessons
- Political scandals

✨ a few of my favorite things:
- THEIR FIRST MEETING!!!!
- Their ease with on another
- Him caring for her intimately when her tiara hurt 🥹
- Alma protecting Jacob and making sure not to push him too much
- The pickled herring scene 🫠🤭
- The lessons, flirting, and safety they feel with one another
- The family DRAMA, I’m so here for it
- The landing scene!!!!! Yes Jacob!!!
- Their inability to stay away from each other
- Chapter 32 & 33
- His hair 🥲
- Alma’s declarations and protections, her everything in Chapter

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book 3 of the the Royals of Sondmark Series - I have so loved that Keira’s characters feel like real people. Each character is distinctly themselves with full personalities and struggles that feel so human. Alma has been fascinating to me since book 1 and I absolutely loved reading her walls come crashing down. It was magical seeing Jacob love her, take care of her, and truly see her without her ever budging. Then once she felt what it was like to be loved and care for, she was able to really be herself and not be crushed by the weight of the monarchy.

Jacob is so American and himself. He is manly and sure and not easily swayed. Alma needed someone kind but strong willed to balance her out. Man he does that. I was all for watching two strong willed people love each other fiercely but also not cave when they really wanted something (“I can’t be your secret”).

Ahhh I need Noah’s book ASAP and I’m ecstatic for Ella’s book. I loved seeing more Noah in this one and I’m so curious about him. Also I need more info on the royal parents ASAP (hopefully their own book). I really enjoyed Jacob’s odd relationship with his father (the king) and his sweet relationship with his mom and grandparents. Also seeing more of Queen mom’s motherly instincts with Alma made me want to know her even more (pg374!!!).

This is a closed door royal romcom with vague mild innuendo, Sondish and Vorburgian cursing, and just non-descriptive making out.

4.5 rounded up to 5.

This is definitely my favorite in the series so far. I simply enjoyed this couple, their plot, and the ending more overall. It felt very reverse-gender princess diaries with Jacob's "pauper to prince" back story and all of the royal lessons justifying the forced proximity between him and Alma. Both the MMC and the FMC were incredibly well-defined and I was bought into their chemistry. Their romantic moments were tender and they both really see each other. There was a seriousness to the tone in a great way and in the sense that both Jacob and Alma know who they are. There isn't an exciting rising conflict or climax to the story necessarily but the angst is drawn out and where they meet in the middle by the end was definitely satisfying. Winter is the perfect time to read this!

While this one felt the most seamless to me of the series so far I realize I struggle a little bit with this author's writing. The style is metaphor-heavy and sometimes these metaphors were too dense in my opinion and dragged the flow down. There is a ton of fictional lingo and real-world parallels that are often not explained but merely inferred with context clues (I found myself not putting in the effort to figure out what some of them meant after a while). And the transitions in the writing are often subtle--sometimes I missed them and would have to go back to catch where the transition happened. I think this interfered with the five star feelings I could have had. But I am very much in this for the long-haul and intend to read the next books. This series are royal romances that feel like fantasy because of all the fictional kingdoms' world-building in our real world and I am enjoying it! Definitely read them in order.

In this book:
-instant spark, slow burn
-forced proximity
-off-limits
-lessons in royalty
-opposites attract
-eldest daughter princess
-rugged cinnamon roll prince
-fish out of water
-dual pov

Content Guide:
romance - clean
language - semi-frequent but minor (damn, hell, bastard); and fictional curse words
violence - physical altercation between guys and shots-fired sounds

Potential Content Warnings:
-Jacob has a sensitive backstory born out of wedlock and raised by a single mother
-non-descriptive drunkenness at the very beginning

Keira Dominguez has created such a beautiful world and I'm so happy I get to continue to live in it with this book!

Alma and Clara's books are almost mirror images in a way - the conflict of forbidden love and duty, one from a place of wanting to earn back her good name and position after some mistakes (Clara), the other wanting to keep that good name and position that has defined her for so long as the Queen's eldest daughter and right hand (Alma).

With each book, the sisters are getting braver and the Queen/Mama is learning to let go a little bit more. She and Père even seem to have made up their rift in this book, which is something I was waiting for! (I would love to know more about them and their inner lives.)

One of the great strengths of this series is the world and character building. We learn a lot more about Vorburg, which I see as a sort of slavic country like Serbia, to Sondberg's Denmark? We also get hints of trouble in Seong (Korea) and I'm really curious how that will unfold in Ella's book.

I love love loved all the sister time in this book, also getting to see glimpses of Clara and Max and Freja and Oskar as their lives together unfold. Who knew Max's little isolated cabin would be so useful?

Jacob is an awesome guy and such a great addition to this world of inbred, entitled jerks like Pietor (who was so ridiculously over the top BAD). Also, the idea of him in high end bespoke British menswear is SUCH A GOOD ONE, need fan art of this ASAP.

I know Alma didn't want their relationship to be part of any bigger strategy on Mama's part, and this relationship is consistently painted as forbidden/enemy, but I could see them making a very profitable geopolitical alliance, bringing two traditional enemies together through "strategic marriage" at the same time as making their very real love match. Give Mama a win for once!

I cannot wait to dive back into this world as soon as possible. Will Ella be next? In the meantime I'll be over here re-reading!

This is a marvelous read. Ms. Dominguez writes such highly individual characters and has fleshed out the kingdom of Sondmark to such a realistic degree that I delight dipping my fingers into that world again and again. Including a reference to my favorite kdrama and making it an emotional touch point was icing on the cake.

My guys. Do you have things to get done this week? Too bad. You’re reading this. Chock full of all the wonderfully delightful banter you would expect from Keira Dominguez, this new Sondmark story is EVERYTHING. I always knew I’d love Alma, but my oh my, little did I realize what Dominguez had in store for us with her… er… Vorburgian? Prince 🤭🤭🤭

An immediate favorite I couldn’t put down. You’ll love this one.

The midnight princess was the slowest burn of them all, but it was filled with angst, lingering touches and need. Jacob was a little rustic and old-school but it made him unique and genuine. Alma was careful, yet passionate and considerate. They balanced eachother out and made an excellent couple to read about 💕

Royalty, tutor, forbidden ish, forced proximity clean

MMC: Prince Jacob Gardner; 30
FMC: Princess Alma

It was a fun chill read, He’s a newly minted prince after finally being claimed by the King after a law battle and after some bad scandal (book 2) the King is having her country teach me all he needs to know to be a prince. Alma just found out her arranged fiancée cheated and gets drunk to get over it and runs into him thinking he’s just the actual princes aid…the share a kiss…she runs…the next day they both find out who each other is but twist he finds out first and asks for her to be his tutor. So now she’s his tutor, they live next to each other and had to fight their feelings since no one outside family can know she’s not engaged anymore.

He was so down bad, his woodworking, and fixing her childhood doll house, he being so protective over him. I love how he was like he won’t be anyone’s secret again! When she finally stood up for herself I was like finally!!!

“Every second we spend together, I have to act like I’m not interested, like her nearness means nothing, like I wouldn’t crawl over broken glass if she asked me to.”

“What problems?” she snaps. “We can solve the problems. I’m not going to give anyone a reason to talk down to you.” I shake my head, shoving my hands into my pockets. “They’ll eat me alive no matter what I do. I’m an American bastard—” “Stop it,” Alma shouts, pounding the table with the flat of her hand. When the last echoes of it die away, she closes her eyes. “That is the last time I hear you speak of yourself that way.”

“Sea walruses can return to a beach filled with ten thousand other sea walruses and know by scent and sound the one sea walrus who belongs to them. It’s a miracle, that kind of connection. I thought it was. But I could close my eyes right now and know exactly who I’m walking with, know the sound of his step, and know how to keep pace at his side.”

I read this book as a break from reading nothing but spicy christmas novellas lately and I’m not mad. I read the other two in the series, and liked them just fine, I feel the same here. I like this series and i’ll probably keep reading them (I NEED a Noah & Caroline book!!!). My only complaints about this one, which i think might have been for the other ones too, is that at times it’s a little hard to follow and the end left me feeling like something was lacking. Overall, I like these storylines and the setting that has been built. However, every once in a while throughout the books I feel like with the wording and the like world-building, I guess, I get a little lost. I think in this book, for example, Alma was talking about like their country history or something and I was pretty lost. Then for the end of this one I felt like something was missing. I don’t know, it was over and I was kind of like: oh, um, okay, I guess. I did really like both Alma and Jacob. Their hidden romance was really cute. I like them both as characters and neither one ever pissed me off. I like seeing the couples from the previous two books and all of the other characters along the way too. There’s no spice in these, which there could’ve been a little, tiny bit, but it’s really not needed. With tension and overall cuteness I don’t mind not having any spice.

This book might (might...) be my favorite Sondmark, and that's saying something. SO GOOD.

It's the third in the Royals of Sondmark series. I am here to confirm that
1 - the writing is excellent, as you would expect
2 - there is definitely romance, and it’s definitely clean
3 - you’ll feel like Sondmark is a real place by the end, and
4 - Keira still maintains her place on the very exclusive list of Living Authors I Always Read.

There’s a short chapter in this book (setting aside all the wonderful swooniness and character development) where the male MC spends some time with his father you’ve never met yet, and it’s the equivalent of a well-crafted movie montage. Go read the book, you’ll know what I mean.

Book three in the Royals of Sondmark series was everything I needed in a romance novel. I adore this series.

I refuse to choose a favorite but if you like a lead who is intensely loyal, stubborn, protective and roguishly handsome this one is for you. Jacob was a perfect gentleman but also not afraid to mete out a black eye or two if needed. A swoon worthy hero indeed!

Don’t sleep on this series. It’s a gem.

Such a fun story! It was the royal romance I didn’t think I needed right now! I liked the pace in which the story progressed, I liked getting to know all the characters, and the ending left me smiling from ear to ear! I especially loved watching the relationships between the royal sisters 🤍 that sister bond is unmatched!

Much better than the second one but still not life changing. Jacob and Alma are so cute but I still find myself smiling over Noah and Caroline and knee-slapping at every single thing Ella says. I fear these next two books may be just right.

Keira Dominguez doesn’t disappoint me!!!

She wrote a Princess Diaries meets The Selection story with Alma and Jacob, and it was awesome!

No spoilers! :)

Read if you love:

- drama that is explained later
- alpha protective men
- close, flawed families in Europe
- royalty marriage

Best quotes: “Together, we lose our way and forget ourselves, lingering in the magical woods.”

Le sigh. I’ll be buying the paperbacks of this series because I want to mark them up and have them as my shelf trophies. The book reads like it flowed out of the author’s pen in such fluid, easy prose. The characters are rich and real, and the romance is (as it always is in a Dominguez book) on point. I am oh so excited for the remaining two siblings to get their stories, although I will be beyond sad to see the series come to an end 😭

STOP IT RIGHT NOW THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING!!!
Okay okay okay I have so many feelings and may I just say THE TENSION. Once again. I am literally obsessed and that's fine.
Alma and Jacob are beautifully distinct characters from the others in this series and are incredibly well written. I also love the pace of this story as it wastes no time jumping right in.
(May I just also say that I need the next book ASAP, please and thank you ;) )

Keira Dominguez is the queen of sweet clean romances. Her latest Royals of Sondmark novel, The Midnight Princess, is a delight and will keep you reading well past midnight because you won’t want to put it down. While it’s third in a series it can also be read as a standalone. But also, don’t miss out on the others. They’re both excellent as well.

The Midnight Princess is a bit of a reverse Princess Diaries combined with a smoking hot MC who "look(s) like (he's) about to be overcome by a frenzy of lumberjacking" and a dutiful eldest daughter princess. The only thing standing between them is a lie for the good of trade relations and 800 years of war between their two countries. Is there anything better than reading about two people wanting each other badly for 400 pages? No.

Keira Dominguez just keeps knocking it out of the park and this the third in the Royals of Sondmark Series and her sixth novel is no exception. It is a stand alone book but having read the previous books gives everything a little more flavor. Read it now, you will laugh, you will fall in love with Sondmark.
