Lucas Miller’s life is a mess. His marriage is in shambles. The horrible summer season has left his business on the verge of collapse and him teetering on the edge of a money pit so deep he has no hope of ever climbing out of. With yet another hurricane targeting the island, he isn’t sure things can get any worse.
Refusing the sexual advances of her sleazy boss, reporter Kimberly Weathers is saddled with the ‘wonderful opportunity’ of traveling out to Speck Island to cover rapidly approaching Hurricane Shakira. Upon arriving on the island, she and her cameraman quickly cross paths with Lucas and several other quirky islanders.
As Shakira bears down and things spin out of control, Lucas and Kim find themselves united in a race to survive the raging storm, recover stolen pirate gold, and rescue Lucas’s estranged wife — all in time for the morning news update.
K.L. Phelps never wanted to be a cop, fireman or baseball player. He fell in love with books at a very early age and (aside from the summer of 1977 when he wanted to be Luke Skywalker) he never wanted to be anything other than a writer. Somehow he took a left when he should have gone right (or write) and spent 17+ years as an oncology nurse. He is now back to pursuing this childhood dream. Thriller, suspense, mysteries, paranormal, humor/comedy, there are very few genres that don't interest him and he intends to take a crack at them all.
This is the 2nd book by this author that I’ve read (Second Chances was the first). The two are completely different in tone and storyline. Stormy Weathers is light-hearted, fun, and a bit outrageous.
The story focuses on a few main characters. Kimberly Weathers is a news reporter that is trying to develop a successful career at a local news station, while working for a sleazy boss. Her boss assigns her to report on a possible hurricane at Speck Island. While unexpected, she and her hunky cameraman, Nick, find themselves caught in the middle of mess.
The other main character is Lucas. He’s a down-and-out, unsuccessful businessman. After inheriting some money, he was scammed by a “black widow” of sorts that has bled him dry. While I didn’t respect him at first, he’s turns out to be a pretty decent guy overall.
While these two remain the focus of the story and their paths do cross, this isn’t a love story. There’s a crazy band of wanna-be criminals, a once-millionaire-turned-surfer named Squid, and some other larger than life characters adding humor to the tale.
The story changes point of view with each chapter, but I found it very clearly defined and easy to follow. The weaving of the different storylines together is done well. While the characters are somewhat outrageous, that just adds to overall light-heartedness of the story.
Basically, this is a book to read if you’re looking for some lovable characters in a fun, if not a little crazy, story.
An enjoyable, polished book. Phelps writes with charm and a gentle wit. A cast of quirky characters, with divergent pasts are drawn to a small island as a storm is heading in. Phelps writing is very visual, more than once I thought, this would work better as a film than a book. If anyone follows my reviews, they'll know my favourite books are ones with one or two central characters which I feel some connection to. With the vast array of characters this is very much a plot led story. If you're looking for a fast paced, fun story, don't overlook this one.
This is the craziest hurricane ride you will ever take. An island off the Georgia, Florida border is almost deserted even before the hurricane can decide where to go. The predatory station manager for KRAP TV sends the only female reporter that won’t visit him in his janitor closet office, Kim, is sent to cover the storm with her camera man Nick. Then, things begin to spin out of control. 4 men on motorcycles wearing garbage bags to stay dry are caught on camera as the cross the bridge from the mainland before it closes and the laughs begin. 9 people are injured, but the reader won’t stop enjoying the story. A mild reference to sex and a little swearing, but the wounds aren’t described in too much detail. PG-13 at the worst.
This was great!!! I read all the Kat Parker books and this one is right up there too!!! The characters are awesome..although I did want to hit Lucas for being so naive. So many funny parts you couldn’t help but love the bumbling bad guys too...well at least some of them. The story ended on a good note but I wanted more. Oh well ...can’t wait to read another K L Phelps book!!! Happy Reading :)
Read the entire Kay Parker series and enjoyed it all. This was a major disappointment. Criminals were ridiculously stupids. Plot was silly. Characters were not interesting.
This isn’t bad and I like Kim and Nick but they don’t feature enough and I found too much of the book focused on the bad guys who were just irritating. I read this as I like the Kat Parker books and found this to be a little disappointing.
They say what can go wrong, will go wrong. But somehow it all goes wrong for everyone as a hurricane may or may not hit Speck Island and Kim and Nick are sent cover the event. Laugh out loud fun and craziness ensues.
A news crew and the politics of the set. The kissass and the ones who will do anything (Yes anything including BJs) to get what she wants. The one not doing this is thrown a bone and told to deal with it. Kim tries to get justice but that ain't happening. Then she is thrown into the weatherperson spot. There is a hurricane, Shakira, on her way and she is as fickle as Mother Nature. Kim and Nick, her camera man, are sent to Speck Island to do on the spot updates. Things go to hell in no time with it turning right for the island. Lucas is in his surf shop trying to figure out what to do with his pending divorce and the possible bankruptcy of his shop. Tracy needs money and lots of it. She is trying to get more by using Snake and his MC gang. The island and its inhabitants are all quirky and interesting.
This is a great beach read and it only makes you want to be there. Loved the story and the buildup.
Kimberly Weathers is a news reporter that is trying to develop a successful career at a local news station, she is assigned to report on a possible hurricane on an island. While on assignment Kimberly and her cameraman, Nick find themselves in a big mess.
Lucas is a down-and-out, businessman. After inheriting some money, he was scammed and loses everything. I really hated Lucas for most of the book.
This isn't a romance it's a melding of many stories, want to be criminals, surfers, and some characters are so out there it makes the story very humorous .
Many times when the POV changes from chapter to chapter I find them hard to keep up with. The author managed to make the transition easy to follow. I loved the way the different story lines intersected. The story is very light and full of humor.
A great cast in this mad romp through a hurricane. Crazy people who I really enjoyed reading about, even the criminals were hard to dislike. The plot was fun with plenty of excitement to keep you reading and the ending was just right.
