He shows how negative responses are caused by unrealistic ideas and interpretations and suggest that in order to fully enjoy life, we must learn to identify and correct the distortions in our thinking.
John Joseph Powell (aka John Powell) was a Jesuit priest and author, and brother of Rita Donlan and William Powell.
He received elementary-school education at the John B. Murphy public school in Chicago. In June 1943, Powell graduated from the Loyola Academy in Chicago. In August 1943, he entered the Society of Jesus at Milford, Ohio. In the fall of 1947, he began a three-year course in philosophy at West Baden College, and enrolled in Loyola University, where he took a Bachelor of Arts degree the following June. He began graduate work at Loyola in 1948 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1956.
Powell worked at West Baden University (1961-1965), the Bellarmine School of Theology of Loyola University (1965-1968) and Loyola University (1968-2001), where he became an associate professor of theology and psychology. Powell was a proponent of humanistic Catholicism and wrote many books mostly dealing with psychology and Catholic theology, and conducted spiritual retreats along with his counseling work. He later retired in Michigan and allegedly died with Alzheimer's disease.
* John Powell I don't Know What To say and What to write !FULLY HUMAN FULLY ALIVE Really makes me speechless ! The BOOK of wisdom and Gory !
* I Liked it soo Much ! really & seriously Recommended to those who like the Journey to inside themselves and their Beliefs .those who enjoy time with themselves most ! ! - Just Like i do Most and enjoy with My self Most hhhhhhhhhhh -
* I was really enjoying this journey with you JOHN POWELL and it helps me so much about distortions in mind and misconceptions of Ideas and making different between reality & rationality and emotions and Irrationality .
Basically Book was Written in very intelligent way That POWELL started with explain how the Belief & values will created for first time from childhood stage at any person - then during growing how it expand or shirking or changed by many factors of any ones life - Then who any one of us can Touch and see his or her VISION !! how To evaluate it ?? how redirect it ??? Then he mentions List of General Misconceptions and also Needs & steps of Vision changing ... JUST goooooooo Deeeppp with This Booooooookkkk .
*I like to share with you some examples from the Book that after I read it ! strongly I accepted and some changes were happen at my vision and beliefs !!Something That grasping My Mind and i wished to Knew it before ...
- Only people who have Joyfully accepted themselves can take all the risks and responsibility .
- It is our perceptions cause our emotions and affect our behavior .then generally must know that negative emotions at your life in any days are all traceable to faulty ideas distorted perceptions and destructive attitude . ( under every emotion is a definite perception )
- the qualities most needed for the construction of an adequate and accurate VISION is * Openness & * Flexibility !!!! the more open and flexible a person is or become the more he or she will be able to change the inherited vision or eliminate the distortions that diminish capacity for the fullness of life .
- the Three requirements for successful VISION THERAPY are 1- * willingness * to revise one's interpretations 2- * Openness * to be questioned by life ! then 3-* find time * for silence and solitude - because really we are all victim of too much noise !!
- # the Rational person knows that happiness is not determined by outside forces and events # the Rational person always remain bigger than their problems . # the Rational person willing to take risks as a part of growth process . if they fail it is not the end of the world ! #the rational people know they can't judge person but only issues . they have no X-RAY eyes to see the intention conscience or knowledge of another . # the Rational person not surrender their personal peace to an impossible situation ! beside they do whatever they can to help those in need .
* Even I like to rewrite the BOOK all indeed hhhhhhh It deserve to be read and even reRead That for sure i Do it soon . and this 5 stars is not enough i gave it 1000000 stars .. Thank you Powell For allowing me To do this Journey with My mind
I'm reading this for my Leadership and Strategy class. All I can say is that it's the sorriest, crappiest piece of BS I've read in a long time. I feel even more stressed after reading a few pages of this book than I was before I picked it up.
I liked the book. There were some good insights here and there, though I wouldn't say anything life altering. The gneral principle of the book I think can be summed up with the following quote:
"Success at therapy can be measured by growth in positive, life-giving attitudes towards self, others, life, the world, and God. The composite of all these attitudes is a person's vision, the way he or she sees reality. It is this vision that determines the emotional patterns of one's life. Only if this vision is sound and healthy can a person enjoy a truly happy and a fully human life." (pg 139)
I was disappointed to find out that Powell was accused of (and admitted to) sexually abusing several women during his years in ministry. That definitely put a damper on my enjoyment of the book. I'm not sure if Powell's insights should be completely dismissed on that regard, though. I suspect that if I threw out every book in every library which was written by a person who had grievous sin in their life (whether it had been exposed yet or not) then I would have to throw almost all of them out, including most of the books of the Bible. I really am not sure what to think of that except that we are all broken people who are being loved by a perfect God, and that it seems we have a better chance at understanding God's love if we share what we are learning with each other than if we rely only on ourselves and our own insights.
This books seems to muse over therapeutic means instead of delving into the issue at hand. I feel there are far better books on the subject, but this could be a good starter for someone wanting a light read on the topic.
I read this book when I was 17 back in the 1970's. It opened doors to my heart and soul that I have been going passing through for the rest of my life.
If there is one book by Fr John Powell that you read, let it be this. Passages on the 'fully human' person resonate so powerfully with every re-read! A classic on being truly in touch with one's self and the world.
