"Get into Comix!" is the 72 pg collected edition (which was originally serialized in the mini-comic "Epic Tales of the Mundane" [ issues #6-9] ) of an autobiographical love-letter to punk rock and self-publishing, and was written and drawn by Brad Dwyer.
Brad Dwyer's love for comics and punk rock didn't always go together. Growing up as a shy and awkward kid in a rural town in Arizona, he became enamored with comics as a kid, but as anyone can tell you, the need to grow up and fit into society becomes so urgent and confusing that it's hard to remember the things that make us happy. Although inspired by his first love of comics, the bar Dwyer sets for himself as a kid is a little too high, and he never reaches the artistic merit he thinks he needs to make his own comics. This is an important lesson that many comic book fans don't realize: although comics have the power to inspire and provide escape from our daily lives, the standards of most mainstream superhero comics is so "polished" and extravagant that the dream of getting into comics appears to be a mere fantasy. But, if we inject a little punk rock into this medium, that perspective starts to change.
As Dwyer's life gets more immersed in punk rock, DIY ethics, and the local music scene, it also starts spiraling out of control, heartbreak, poverty, and a great deal of unhealthy drinking. It's only when he reaches rock bottom that he discovers DIY comics almost purely by chance and with that finds the motivation he needs to revisit his dream once again of becoming a comic book story teller. The characters don't have to look like Olympic athletes and the stories don't have to revolve around make-believe superheroes. Comics just need to tell a story. And with years of punk rock ethics embedded in his DNA, he is able to cut these false gods down to size into their true form – something he can work with.
These are the aspects of Get Into Comix that make it such a charming and worthwhile read. Although it's small in size, it's part of a greater idea.
