In Natalie Keller Reinert’s utterly immersive and propulsive eight-book Eventing Series, we follow Jules and her friends through the joys and losses of competitive eventing as they climb to the top of their sport―and into one another’s lives and hearts.
Jules and Pete have hit rock bottom. They are living in the middle of nowhere in a tiny horse trailer, dependent on nearby farms for training facilities. Despite all that, Jules has never been happier. She has her horses and her boyfriend and her loyal beagle, and, for perhaps the first time ever, she feels free. But Pete, who is still reeling from the loss of the beautiful farm he was supposed to inherit, struggles to adapt to their new life. And when word of their circumstances gets out, the owners Jules and Pete depend on begin to question whether they can trust them.
Desperate to shore up their reputation, Jules starts teaching and is surprised that she enjoys it. As she begins to imagine a different kind of life, Pete schemes to get back to the top of the equestrian scene. When he resorts to questionable tactics to secure a new horse, Jules realizes how lost he is. Jules has never considered herself to be lucky, but maybe she’s had it wrong all along. Can she convince Pete that the only luck they need is their horses and each other?

Luck (Eventing #4) was everything I had hoped it would be and even more. I was excited to read the fourth installment in The Eventing series by Natalie Keller Reinert. In Luck, after lots of unsuccessful attempts, Pete and Jules were forced to abandon Pete’s grandfather’s farm, Briar Hill farm. They were now living in a minuscule horse trailer. At least, they were still together but their relationship was being tested with each hardship Pete and Jules experienced. They had built temporary horse stables and had to rely on neighboring farms to allow them to use their land to train their horses. Pete was having a hard time with these arrangements. Their hard luck was definitely making it harder for Pete to accept the challenges that they faced. Once again, Jules took the reins in her own hands and started doing something she never thought she would do. Jules began teaching and not only was she good at it but she was enjoying it as well. Could luck be around the corner for Jules and Pete?
Luck was about friendship, trust, social media, influencing others and belief in one’s own ability. I really enjoyed witnessing how Jules’s character evolved and grew throughout this series of books. This is such a great series! I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. I recommend this series if you have a passion for horses or you enjoy watching people succeed in what they are passionate about.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio for allowing me to listen to the audiobook of Luck by Natalie Keller Reinert through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I decided this totally counts towards my book challenge, because I’ve read this book so many times, I barely remember writing it. It has become its own thing.
Another great installment from Reinert, who has done an impressive job in making characters come to life that readers feel a sense of investment in as people. Jules and Pete begin the story pretty much as low as professional horsepeople can sink. They spend the novel attempting to extricate themselves from a hole that a mix of bad choices and fate have dragged them into. It's interesting to see how the Internet and online culture figures into their solution and an important acknowledgement of the way that social media has changed modern horse culture (just like it has all facets of human existence).
Just finished Luck and was nearly in tears a few times! Thank you, Natalie, for Jules, Pete, Dynamo, and Mickey. Their little world makes mine just a bit brighter--cant wait to see what's in store for the DreamTeam next! This fourth installment comes with a side of Jules I've never seen, and one that I enjoy very much. I used to shake my head at her antics; after reading the first of this series, I actually didn't like Jules much at all. In fact, I was pretty sure I would never be on TeamJules. But her personality and growth have really shone recently, and I think it's an amazing testament to how real life, and reality, can change a person. Well done! Can't wait for the next one.
It's been a while since I read #3 so I had to figure everyone out, but they all fit into place. Many riders and young trainers will nod in sympathy as Jules struggles through this phase of her life (with Pete) - and dream of the serendipitous result.
The only problem with starting a Natalie Keller Reinert book is that you eventually have to finish it - a lot sooner than you want to. She’s created characters you become emotionally invested in, and three separate series that dovetail seamlessly. Her experience with and love for horses leaps off the page.
Looked back to see that I first read this Eventing series eight years ago. Wow.. time flew. Always love a book where it’s obvious that the writer knows their subject matter and Natalie knows horses, eventing and Florida. I love this entire series and got so caught up in reading and posting about it on TikTok that I forgot to do reviews on my favorite Goodreads. As I am waiting for the last two books in the series to be rereleased I will do a general recap.
Jules.., she’s thorny and has a chip on her shoulder the size of a cross country log. She loves her horses and her dog and her little ten acre training barn and even her old trailer with the saggy floor and the even saggier couch. Anyone who had worked as hard as she has can feel that and forgive her the prickly way she treats people. The working for it vs the ones it’s handed to. Becky.., oh we love to hate her.., dang I wanted her to have any other name but my own. Lacey.., we cheer her on cause we love how scrappy and tough she is Sweet Pete.., oh that eyebrow and that lazy smile.., in breeches and boots. ❤️
All the books in this series are wonderful.., don’t miss any of them.
Okay, Luck was an interesting read for me. This was not the Jules I had come to know and have such a love/hate relationship with. Through reading the book I felt like Jules had lost much of the spark that made her Jules. Where was that all encompassing drive that was the thing that made me respect her even through all the temper tantrums, and socially awkward, aggravating things she did? Why did she seem so complacent with sweet little Jim Deer while Pete pushed hard to create a string of top horses for himself? This was not my Jules!
However now that I have read it and thought about it for a bit, I see that Luck is a transitional story. Jules is growing up and growing a better emotional mind set. Now that the tides have turned and have and things are looking up, she has steady income and Mickey back I really hope see a little bit of that old Jules fire!
This book hints that she can't get Dymano back from Pete, it will hurt her career. If that is true then there must be another rags to riches horse in the making. Not an expensive beauty like Pete is getting but a scraggly little auction find with something special hidden inside, a chestnut mare maybe? LOL
Another great book that I could not put down wanting to know what happened to some of my favorite characters in years. I'm a Natalie fan from here on out!
I know I sound like a broken record because I say this every single time I read one of these books, but I have to say it: they accuracy of the horse world and horse interactions is so good! It is everything to me!
Natalie Keller Reinert and her Eventing series is proof that you NEED to have interacted with horses in order to write a book (or series) about them (I'm looking at you, cowboy romance book authors). I find myself skipping over scenes about horses in books that have obviously been written by someone who does not know much about horses, but never with these books. It really really really does make such a massive difference in the reading experience for me (and I'm sure for every other reader who has ridden or competed or just been around horses).
Since this is the fourth book in this series, we see a lot of character development and a culmination of past character development, which I always love to see in books. I really am a character-based reader. Give me characterization and I will be happy. I did find that a few parts dragged a bit and were a tad slow, but I can forgive that because of how amazingly accurate the horse moments are.
I really do speed through this series!
Thanks to NetGalley for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
Another great read from Ms Reinert. Gotta say, this is #4, and all 4 have held my attention and interest from page 1 in #1. Next comes the final in this series, and I both look forward to it, and at the same time sorry the story will be ending. I love how the characters, and there have been many, are crystal clear to me, and memorable. I include the horses as characters, as they play a huge part in the long storyline. I'm gonna miss this series, but glad I have, and will continue to read more from this excellent author.
This is such a great series and I've loved listening to the audiobooks. In Luck, Jules and Pete have left his family farm go and are basically starting over. It's a lot for them to swallow as a couple, but they work together to improve their situation. I love that Jules finally found joy in teaching and the way it opened her up to a different type of creativity. She has come so far in these novels and I'm always impressed by her drive and determination to succeed.
I received a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
Natalie Keller Reinert has done it AGAIN! Luck (The Eventing Series #4) was another fantastic read in this series. Natalie nails the horse portions of her books. Every. Single. Time. There was a certain line in this book that made me laugh out loud because I had actually experienced it that same week I read it.
I love reading about Jules, Pete, and all their horses. I truly enjoyed meeting the new cast of characters who join Jules and Pete as well. I enjoyed every page of Luck and the ups and downs that we experience along with the characters.
Thank you to Natalie Keller Reinert, Flatiron Books, and NetGalley for an ARC of Luck (The Eventing Series #4) in exchange for an honest review.
I love, love this author! Her books are spectacular. She has amazing horse experience that she integrates in these books effortlessly. You can tell she has a love of horses that supersedes the dollar signs. Every time I see a new release from her I get excited and settle in for a great read. Please, please keep them coming!
You know those books when you fall in love with the premise and characters early on, but then all the later books disappoint you? This series was that for me. Horrible people, toxic relationships, and an uninspired plot ruined the later books of this series. Would not recommend and won't read again.
Better than the previous book in the series that I reviewed. The female protagonist is much more personable. The storyline has more depth than previous. Definitely more than a passing fancy for horses to really appreciate the series. The details that goes into the type of training and writing related in the series is not for amateurs.
Love this series! I hope there are more! I love that I can read the parallel stories of Grace and Alex, too. I wish this one had a tiny bit more technical riding storyline. I enjoy the insights into the reality of making money in the horse business.
I find Jules too unlikable for the first three books that it was frustrating to continue ading. Jules has improved and hopefully the over the top set backs can be minimal so that I can read about some real riding in the rest of the series.
Reinert really started coming into herself in this book of the series. The horse parts stayed great and it was nice to see the character development catch up too. I’m excited to finish the series now!
4.5 stars rounded down, because I still don’t like Mr. Boyfriend. I loved the relationships Jules built in this book, and it left me feeling so happy. I took a while to read it, because I didn’t want it to end- but I’m going to be starting #5 ASAP!
