Waleed Mahmud Tariq is a non fiction writer and author whose passion for writing shines through his narratives. With over a decade of writing experience, Waleed has initiated a lifelong literary journey, driven by his dedication to leave a lasting impact on the world through the exploration of multidisciplinary themes and concepts. His works explore pressing contemporary issues that he believes stem from a widespread detachment from critical disciplines like moral and existential philosophy.

Waleed’s intellectual pursuits are very broad, spanning STEM subjects, social sciences, psychology, education, philosophy, and theology. As a lifelong learner and natural critical thinker, he advocates for universal education and personal growth, emphasizing the transformative power of ethical education in developing moral character and building a more harmonious world.

His literary contributions include "Probing Freewill," which examine the debate of human freedom against the concept of destiny; "Power & Ethics," which traces the evolution of ethical thought and its impact on society; "Decrypting Globalization," which explores the socio-economic effects of globalization, "This is NOT Education," which critiques and suggests a reformation of the education system, and "Undepressed," where he discusses depression from a personal and clinical point of view as a blend of a memoir and self-help. Each book serves as a testament to his ability of synthesizing complex ideas into engaging, thought-provoking content that not only educates but also inspires action.

The book looks into the intricate neurobiological and psychological facets of depression, interweaving personal experiences with extensive research. It opens with an engaging and empathetic narrative that draws readers into the complex world of depression, encouraging a compassionate understanding.

The book presents a detailed examination of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, elucidating their roles in mood regulation and the physiological alterations in brain structures such as the hippocampus and amygdala. Additionally, it discusses innovative research findings, including genetic studies identifying loci linked to depression and the role of epigenetics in gene expression influenced by environmental factors.

Positive aspects include its comprehensive content, blending personal anecdotes with scientific rigor, a clear and engaging writing style, and its appeal to both academic and general audiences seeking a deeper understanding of depression. The book stands out for its uniqueness in addressing both biological and psychological perspectives and its meticulous editing. The marketability is enhanced by the current relevance of mental health discussions and the growing interest in holistic approaches to treatment.

While the book is highly commendable, one area for improvement could be a more streamlined integration of technical details to maintain reader engagement without overwhelming non-specialist audiences. Also, because the subject pertains to mental health, the book would be more helpful for readers if the author has a medical, psychology, mental health, or related background to solidify the applicability of the concepts discussed.

This book may not appeal to readers seeking light, casual reading or those uninterested in scientific and psychological analyses. However, it would be greatly appreciated by mental health professionals, students, and individuals interested in understanding the complexities of depression, much like the works of Bessel van der Kolk.

In conclusion, this manuscript makes significant contributions to the literary and scientific understanding of depression, offering valuable insights and practical knowledge. Its blend of personal narrative and scientific exploration gives it great potential to become a notable work in the field of mental health literature.

As someone with experience working in the mental health field and witnessing how much damage the stigma does to people - damage which is entirely preventable with proper treatment - I really appreciated Tariq's framework for finding an escape from depression. I truly believe the thing that kills people with depression is not the illness itself, but societal prejudices against people who open up about their struggles with it. Tariq's research is well-informed and his writing is super clear and easy to understand, which is perfect for the subject matter. He also interlaces his advice with details of his personal experiences, which makes it a lot more relatable and offsets any of the technical terminology, which can be intimidating to people who are new learners about the subject. I highly recommend this book, not just to folks with depression, but also to folks with family or friends who have this condition, as it can be immensely helpful in understanding their struggles from the outside. I'm going to end this review with what I felt was the most valuable takeaway from this book, to quote the author:
"Happiness is not a constant state, but a collection of fleeting moments."

Mahmud Tariq is one of the kindest, most gentle souls I've had the privilege of speaking with. He gifted me this book during a time when I deeply needed thoughtful, grounding words - and it arrived like a quiet light in the fog.

This book offers a compassionate yet clear-eyed exploration of the mind’s more elusive and irrational corners. It gently guides the reader toward a deeper understanding of depression - whether you’ve faced it yourself or love someone who has. What I appreciated most is that it doesn’t offer false comfort or easy solutions. Instead, it acknowledges the daily effort required to confront our inner struggles while providing insightful tools to better understand ourselves along the way.

Reading it felt like a companionable walk through difficult terrain - never minimizing the challenge, but always offering clarity and care.

Waleed Mahmud’s Undepressed serves as a companion piece to people suffering from depression and the traumas associated with it. By concentrating on trauma and its root cause or causes, Mahmud answers a question often asked: what causes depression? As a result, Mahmud is both thoughtful and thorough when describing the disease and when providing remedies for it.

I see this book as a gift for people suffering from depression and a gift for people trying to understand the disease that’s afflicting their loved ones. Surviving or living with depression is not easy. This book champions the depressed while helping them activate much needed coping skills. This is a must read.

This is a great tool for those wanting to understand depression and the effect is has on the victim, family and friends. An honest impression of this debilitating affliction written by a surviving sufferer. I found the content confronting at times, the self-help section at the end of each chapter is very useful. Waleed had delved deeply into depression and has shared his experiences openly.
If you want a handbook to help a friend, family member or yourself, this is the book to read.

This book is a great choice for anyone who wants to know more about depression. Whether you are dealing with it, a loved one, or you just want to know more, this book has a lot of information. If you have spent a decent amount of time in therapy, you will know most of what is in here already, but the authors short anecdotes are interesting. This was a 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars for me.
