"Monroe keeps the suspense high, and readers will draw a bated breath with the turn of each page." —Booklist Dolores Reese spent her childhood in foster care, like Floyd Watson, a local boy who intrigues her from the moment they meet. When one bad decision sends an innocent Floyd to prison for life, Dolores promises to stick by him. But while Floyd's world stands still, Dolores meets a new man who promises her the kind of future she's always wanted—the kind she once imagined having with Floyd. But when Floyd is suddenly freed on new evidence, Dolores is torn and must make a fateful decision. And if she isn't careful, Dolores just might find out what happens when love, dishonesty, and dangerous jealousy collide. "Monroe serves up a tasty dish of murder, deception, lust, and just deserts." —Library Journal "Full of all the drama and humor that Mary Monroe is known for." —Urban Reviews
I am the third child of Alabama sharecroppers and the first and only member of my family to finish high school. I never attended college or any writing classes. I taught myself how to write and started writing short stories around age four. I spent the first part of my life in Alabama and Ohio and moved to Richmond, California in 1973. I have lived in Oakland since 1984.
My first novel THE UPPER ROOM was published by St. Martin's Press in 1985 and was widely reviewed throughout the U.S. and in Great Britain. An excerpt is included in Terry McMillan's anthology BREAKING ICE. I endured fifteen years and hundreds of more rejection letters before I landed a contract for my second novel, GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY. It was published in October 2000 by Kensington Books. GOD DON'T PLAY is my seventh novel to be published, and it landed me a spot on the prestigious New York Times Bestsellers list for the first time! My eighth novel, "BORROW TROUBLE," was released December 2006. My ninth novel, DELIVER ME FROM EVIL, was released September 2007 and my tenth novel, SHE HAD IT COMING, was released in September 2008, and my eleventh novel THE COMPANY WE KEEP, will be released March 2009.
I won the Oakland Pen Award for Best Fiction of the Year in 2001 for GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY. I won the Best Southern Author Award for GONNA LAY DOWN MY BURDENS, in 2004.
I am divorced, I love to travel, I love to mingle with other authors, and I love to read anything by Ernest Gaines, Stephen King, Alice Walker, and James Patterson. I still write seven days a week and I get most of my ideas from current events, the people around me, but most of my material is autobiographical.
This is Mary Monroe true to form, wacky characters, full of mess, drama, and shenanigans. How does she come up with half of this stuff? The title aptly fit both Ms. Valerie and "LoReese" to the T! I could not believe Dolores! She had some issues with men don't you think? I have read several of Mary Monroe's books and have been entertained thus far. Her books have a sense of 'sameness' and I would like to see her veer off into another direction in some future books. Overall, this was a quick, fun, laugh out loud read.

The audio version is SO much better. I thoroughly enjoyed the book this time. When the baby took his pacifier out of his mouth and put it the complaining lady's, I hollered!
I’ve had this book for some years now and just recently got around to finishing. The book started slow that’s why it was so easy for me to put down and whenever I would try to pick it up again something else would draw my attention away from reading. However this time I gave myself a week to finish the book and once I got several pages into the book I was able to see the plot pick up and come alive. Although the plot did pick up, it also seem to slow down and it felt drawn out so I do what I always do when I feel like the story is taking too long to get to the point….I skipped pages. Maybe I should say skipped but more like skimmed. In the end, the book ended without a nice little red bow (meaning everything was wrapped up).
I really didn't care for the ending. It was to neat. So many "strings" to wrap up and Monroe did it all too easily after her dense story before the ending.
I really like this book. I kept me engaged. I liked all the characters. I also liked how the flow of the story went. I give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and a half stars
Mary Monroe’s She Had It Coming takes the journey of Dolores Reese, a foster child turned women who marries one too many men. Due to an interrupted childhood, Dolores’s sense of loyalty is off balance, leading her to feel obligated to the people in her life. Unable to tell the truth and constantly hiding behind secrets, Dolores falls deeper and deeper into a pit of chaos, making catastrophe inevitable: How long can a woman live a double life before it all falls apart?
Monroe is a wonderful storyteller. She Had It Coming is engaging, well developed, and flows like a beautifully crafted poem. The novel was such a treat that I felt slightly disappointed with the ending when it concluded without a real sense of closure for the main character. I was left with several unanswered questions about the fate and future of the main and supporting characters. This is certainly a book in which I would want and encourage a sequel. 4.5 Stars
ok while it started off a little slow it was only due to the author trying to provide as much background information as possible to give the dynamics of the relationships discussed in the book. However as it got past that I really started enjoying the book...The twists and turns and drama was on point!!!! I do wish it would've ended different but I still enjoyed it!!!!
If you are looking for a book with end to end drama, this is what you need to read. This book was very entertaining and the ending was a shocker! Lo really was a mess, but she did the best with the cards that she was dealt.
You have a lot of similarities in your characters and tropes in many of your novels and it annoys me. Carmen, Annette, Trudy, and Dolores are ALL the same person. I wish you would expand your horizons and vocabulary. I have read many of your novels and everyone has “fish eyes”, exasperates, incredulous, and that’s just to name a few.
To the viewers you will get a good laugh here and there but this story is a let down. It is not realistic at all!! The main character was given multiple chances to come clean to both her “husbands” and choice to create a drawn out theatre play around the truth! I am so disgusted by this trope bc it’s the same one in “God don’t like ugly” series, “gonna lay down my burdens”,& “in sheep’s clothing”.
Way too much unnecessary foolishness that could have easily been avoided. This is the first Mary Monroe book that i DNF. With this author it’s hit or miss. She loves to waste reading time with drawn out books it makes no sense
Oh, this book was a hot mess express train and I loved the whole ride. while the main character had her faults and there were many, you still rooted for her because she kept drawing the short straw. I hate her friend Valerie didn't get her happily ever after, but few do. Overall, I really enjoyed the characters: Paul, Floyd, Glodine, and even moaning Lisa. They were all entertaining. I like books that are just a good ridiculous release from reality.
Not certain how this happened. At times people are not aware of what they are capable of. Kept my interest. Why spend all that time developing the storyline of the policeman and his family? Book brought awareness to social issue of Foster care.
Overall good read. The characters had a lot going on and full of drama and random sexual encounters. In the end I was mad at Valerie for betraying her friends confidence and mad at Floyd for giving up so easy. I would’ve like to know what became of him as well.
Most of the book was spent getting into the relationships. The end felt a bit rushed and I really don't know what purpose the murder served other than shock value. Wouldn't read again, but I enjoyed it this time around.
While I liked reading the book, I found myself so caught up in it, that I definitely had no respect for Dolores. She definitely had it coming. The character Moanin Lisa was a mess. I actually felt bad for Valerie. Definitely a good book to read
This book is a story of bigamy, murder, abuse and the list goes on. It's a fast reading story with suspense and rivalry between friends. This character in this book shows how's cheating can destroy everything .
Loved this book, it was so interesting. Couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen in the end. Dolores lived a crazy life, I don't know how she made it as far as she did before her house of cards came tumbling down.
