Readers of the Lion of War series have come to know Gareb as an old warhorse veteran delivering tongue-lashings left and right, but before he joined the camps of David later in life, he was the young and eager shield bearer for Prince Jonathan. This is the story of Gareb and Jonathan as they scale the cliffs of Michmash and attack a Philistine outpost that no one believes can be taken...no one except Jonathan, a man of destiny and courage whose story will resonate. The Hall of the Mighty Men is a companion series of short stories to the Lion of War novels about the wars of King David.
Narrated by Jehoshaphat, the historian of King Solomon, this collection of origin tales expands the Lion of War literary universe and contains epic battles and feats of bravery unable to be included in the novels and upcoming movies. Thrilling and passionate, The Hall of the Mighty Men is another chapter in the epic Lion of War series that fans will enjoy for years to come.
While Waiting on Lion of War As the series stalls, I thought it would worth my time to read these companion pieces. Gareb arrived in my Kindle library by way of BookBub for free, so I decided to start there before purchasing the others. The story itself was enjoyable, and basically what I expected: dramatic, well-paced, gritty in its application of faith, exciting storytelling through the main battle, etc. My complaint is that it adds very little to the Lion of War narrative. As something of a place holder and origin story, I had hoped the tale would be more...consequential, I suppose. I love the Lion of War books, including all of the characters and plots therein; unfortunately, this particular story offered neither deeper exploration nor further development. I'll purchase the other novellas of which The Hall of Mighty Men is comprised, in order to buy time - hoping that those stories contribute more to Graham's literary universe.
