Derek Landy is an Irish writer and screenwriter. In addition to the bestselling children's/YA series of Skulduggery Pleasant books, a supernatural mystery series starring Skulduggery Pleasant, a skeleton detective, and Valkyrie Cain, a young female magician, he has written two screenplays that have been made into films: the IFTA award winning "Dead Bodies" and the IFTA nominated "Boy Eats Girl". Landy himself was nominated for an IFTA for Best Script.
He doesn’t like to brag about all the awards he’s won, such as the Irish Book of the Decade, or the Red House in the UK, or all the other awards that he humbly displays on his mantelpiece. He is also far too modest to mention things like the first book being a Publisher’s Weekly Best Book of the Year, but would like to extend an invitation to Oprah to pop around one day for tea, in thanks for selecting his book for the Oprah’s Book Club Kids Reading List.
Derek plays too many video games, reads too many comics, and watches too many movies. He lives in Ireland with too many cats. Occasionally he talks to real people, but only when he absolutely has to.
This collection pulls together 2 years of Crypt Of Shadows one-shots, the Werewolf By Night one-shot that came out around the time of the MCU Special Presentation, and the Moon Knight Annual that features Jack.
The Crypt Of Shadows one-shots are fun, though most of the stories are too short to really make an impact. I was mostly interested in the Victor Strange framing story, since it sets him up to reappear in Jed Mackay's Doctor Strange run.
The WBN one-shot was probably the best part of the collection, with Derek Landy's takes on both Jack Russell and Elsa Bloodstone being pretty much spot on. The Moon Knight Annual is solid too, and reads great outside of this collection, but it's definitely more of a Moon Knight story than a Werewolf one, since it draws on a lot of Moon Knight continuity.
A good shout to revisit for Halloween. And I freaking love werewolves, so y'know, extra points for that.
3.5⭐. This was perfect to read during Halloween. A fun collection of spooky stories, and I loved the cutaway narration of Victor Strange linking the stories together. Reading it gave me the same vibe as watching the Twilight Zone. This also makes me want to read Werewolf by Night more intently, even though this book was kind of lacking in the character’s appearance throughout.
Side note: Rain Beredo’s art in the first story was the best.
While not exactly a Werewolf By Night Book, this was still kind of fun. Collected here are handful of stories from Marvel's supernatural side starring Werewolf By Night, Bloodstone, Moon Knight, Man-Thing, Morbius, and many more. Some were really good, some weren't, one was awful, but overall, if this is in your genre of choice, its definitely worth checking out.
