How can something so absolutely beautiful consist of the deadliest poison?
Death A mushroom typically ingested to relieve one of their demons and other problems. The psychedelic properties make this mushroom dangerous, as the amounts consumed must be monitored and properly measured prior to use. These mushrooms can be used in spells or potions to aid in wiping one’s memories and identity, giving room for a foreign influence to step in and fabricate a new identity or life from the shell of the being who consumes it—a puppet to its master, clueless of the truth of their reality. The effects can vary and require consistent use if one wishes to maintain the lucidity of the mushrooms, but be wary… overuse of the mushrooms will lead to certain death, as they are indeed extremely poisonous.

This has to be the best April's Fools book joke turned actual book! It was a fun, fast and a wee bit dark fantasy novella that I devoured straight away. Full of spice, morally grey MCs and a surprisingly deep plotline, I never thought I'd enjoy a medieval book as much as I did this one. The world building was in-depth and well developed considering the length of the book, and the characters were so easy to love. Both MCs were possessive and would do anything for the other and the chemistry was insane and spicy and delicious! For someone who doesn't normally pick up fantasy books, this has me wanting to do more often because this was such a great novella!

❤︎ ARC provided in exchange for an honest review ❤︎
“I better hear you—every moan, every scream, every gasping breath as I fuck you. You are my wife, and I want the entire kingdom to know.”
This April fools joke turned novella was a fantastic read. I loved the H&h. For a short story the characters and story were impressive. This is a great book to start with this author. Definitely look forward to reading more by the her.
“The difference between us, brother, is that you do not fight for the kingdom, but for yourself.” - Agaric
This isn’t something I’d normally read, I was lucky enough to get sent an ARC and I originally didn’t think I’d read it (well at least not right away, as I don’t do well with being in a time frame but I saw that this wasn’t a long book & my kindle said it would only take me an hour to read it so i figured why not!
I’m glad I read it. Again not something I’d usually gravitate towards because it verges more on the fantasy side of things and that’s not my taste but for a short read it was great, worth the hour that I gave it! I’m excited to see what else is to come!!
Death Cap was gifted to be by the lovely Nicola this is is a twisted journey through a dark world that feels straight out of a forbidden fairytale. Imagine stepping into a midnight forest lit by the eerie glow of bioluminescent mushrooms, where danger pulse beneath every step. This book captures that atmosphere perfectly, pulling you into its web of mystery and tension.
From the start, there’s something off about Prince Agaric. He’s introduced with a seductive charm that never fully hides his darker undertones. I couldn’t shake the feeling that his intentions were more dangerous than they appeared, and as the story unfolded, my suspicions were confirmed. However we love King Morel and our ‘ wolfsbane’/Amanita
The storyline is haunting, poetic, and filled with a surreal quality that lures you in deeper and I couldn’t put this down And just when you think it couldn’t get more intoxicating, the story shifts. Hints of seduction turn into full-blown passion, with smutty, well-written scenes that blend seamlessly into the dark fairytale tone. It’s an unexpected, yet welcome twist that gives the book its steamy edge while keeping the plot gripping. ( I genuinely didn’t think this to have smut in it)
I enjoyed this a lot, if this was a movie it would be my favourite movie hands down honestly. So should this be added to your TBRs and lists? Yes. 💯yes!
This medieval themed novella literally took my breath away! I can't believe it was based on an April Fool's joke because it was so well made and amazing! The story follows our two twin princes; one is daddy's favourite and raised in a way fit for a future king while the other was discarded and left to wallow on his own. Morel was raised by his mother and whom he loved dearly while Agaric was always beside his father. After their mother passed away, the king banished Morel from the kingdom and let Agaric rule the crowned prince. Morel decides to create his own shadow kingdom, which rivals that of Agaric's sunny Dyrade. He and his Queen Hesper ruled the remaining kingdoms and planned to set fire to Dyrade.
Morel is the epitome definition of morally grey, and Hesper is definitely one badass FMC. I absolutely love their characters and cheered when they were reunited 💕
I love how the author embeds the moral of our society into this short novella. She speaks about the injustice done to people who society views as weird, outcasts, or downright evil when, in fact, it is the people who are living their "normal" lives are the ones filled with evil. What Agaric and his father did to Morel is unjust, and his actions are completely logical. When we create something evil, do we not expect to be met with consequences?
Considering that this started out as an April Fools, I have to hand it to C. Hebert for pulling such a fab story out of it and in such a short time!
In this book: dark fantasy, rival brothers, a King of darkness and Prince of light, bonded, heartbreak, missing memories, poisonous intentions, masquerade, fluorescent blue and blood lust.
This is the story of two brothers. One of light and one of darkness. A strong rivalry born from the jealousy of one. Wicked intentions grow in the form of the pretty blue mushrooms once lovingly tended. And stolen memories cause a wrath to be unleashed.
I couldn’t put this down! This is a short read but plenty of back story to keep you invested. The love story of Morel and his Queen intertwined with battle and revenge was so passionate, I’d love to know more of their beginnings.
Definitely recommend if you like your fantasy dark with passion, poison and spice!
This story had me absolutely captivated from the very beginning. As short as this story is, it packs a punch and leaves you absolutely captivated! We have a dark telling of 2 brothers, Agaric and Morel, fighting each other for their kingdoms. One is all light and sweetness, and the other is the self proclaimed king of the dark.
Amanita is the victim of a lost memory, but the bright and sunny Agaric is selflessly taking care of her and trying to make her feel at home. Unfortunately, no matter how hard he tries, something is missing.
Morel, who suffered an incredible loss during the last battle thanks to his brother, is out for revenge! But he's in for a surprise.
Without giving too much away, I loved the ending. It was not what you'd expect, but it was absolutely perfect
What does every fearless queen need? A man who’s willing to fight for you! Even if his brother is the other guy🫠
The was a short, spicy, dark fantasy story that I flew through so fast because it was so good! This book was created because of a April fools joke?! That’s crazy because it was so good that I wanted it be longer lol.
The details around Amanita was so well done with the aspect of showing exactly how the death caps related to her and her back story. For a small novella I feel like the back story was so EPIC with how the world was set and the circumstances of Morel and Agaric.
First of all Agaric is TRIFLING for doing what he did to Hesper, the audacity! But Morel didn’t give up and caught on quick as to what was happening and I loved that so much. He knew his queen and knew something was up from how she was reacting.
The ending made me so happy for Morel and Hesper! The spice was *chef’s kiss*🤌🏾, I ate it up🤭
This was the perfect blend of dark, fantasy, and spice! We may have discovered another shadow daddy guys and gals😏💙🖤
What a wonderful dark fantasy novella! What started as an April Fool's joke turned into a HEA. The multi POV kept the story moving. It felt like a fun, dark, bedtime story for adults. A quick read that gives a little fantasy, a little spice, and a little darkness. It felt magical! I loved how it embraced living in darkness and chaos! It was beautiful and heartwarming in all the blood and rage. All the things that warm my cold heart.
2,5⭐️ Too short for my taste. I wish the story had been drawn out a little. Either with Hester’s emprisonnement, how fast she remembered who she was or the final battle. For someone belonging to « the light », Agaric was a true monster. I knew something was off with him. Morel, king of Darkness or not, was the right brother right off the bat.

How did a joke become just a beautifully dark and twisted piece?? I really enjoyed Death Cap once I got into it, which for some reason took me a second. But babyyyyy the UNDYING love and devotion the MMC had for his wife….😍😍. Did I guess the reveal/twist early into it? Yes! BUT I had to know how everything would end or play out and I was not disappointed in the end. Definitely worth a read and I mean it has mushrooms 🍄
What started out as an April fools joke turned into this full fantasy story of eternal love and deceit. This book just shows the pure talent of C. Heberts writing. To create a whimsical short story with so much attention to detail in such a short time is just amazing.
If you're looking for a fun, quick read, you have come to the right place. This book has everything from fantasy, romance, action, and sibling rivalry all in one. I could not stop reading, also inspired by mushrooms, what could go wrong
wow!! i was sooo wrong!! light is not always good, dark is not always bad. i knew that... but ofcourse appearances can be deceiving. which was the fun part the further i read & unravel this fantasy novella. i could not put it down!! it was sooo good!! i loved hesper & morel's love & devotion for each other. ya...they like chaos, they liked bl00d, they like darkness. so what? they stayed true to themselves & their ppl who loved & respected them even if his twin brother did not see their legitimacy. this might have started as an april fool's joke, but im so glad miss C pursued to write this!! ive thoroughly enjoyed reading d3äth cap♥️♥️

I loved this book from start to finish!! You follow Prince Agaric, the rightfully king of Dryade who has saved a damsel in distress who has been severely wounded in battle. Her name is Amanita, who appears to have amnesia and can't remember her past or her injury. She suffers from nightmares, but she can't get enough of the mystery man in them. As she grows fond of Agaric, she also senses he's not quite as genuine as he appears to be. As they grow closer, she learns of his brother, Morel, whose an outcast who was shunned from the kingdom for being different and the 2nd son. Always closer to his mother than than king, they bonded over their love for plants and fungi. He made his own kingdom called Grisset after their mother died tragicly. He ruled with his love, Hesper, together they reigned evil and havoc across the lands. Only are things the way they seem or will a Masquerade ball unlock the unanswered questions Amanita needs answered. As she's kidnapped by Morel and taken back to Grisset, she learns the truth behind who she is and her past. If you love a morally grey twist, poison mushrooms, some spice thrown in, a love story for the ages, fantasy romance with a drak twist, and a battle for peace, you'll want to read this short novella!! What to Expect... Dark romance, violence, rival's, kidnapping, revenge, betrayal, memory loss, multiple povs, strong fmc, forced proximity, lovers to Enemies to lovers, found family, trauma, abuse, possessive villain, death, murder, war, and more!!
Ahh this was soo good!! I’m obsessed with Cyn’s stories and her morally grey men! Her writing is so vivid and lush and she’s becoming one of my favorite indie authors.
First I have to applaud the use of Amanita’s name! 🍄🟫 Absolutely brilliant! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 When I saw that I thought, damn that’s smart.
Much like Amanita, I too am drawn to the darkness. 🖤 I loved the themes of light and dark in this novella.
Even though I had a feeling of what was going to happen, this story was enthralling and I still felt myself on the edge of my seat waiting for it to unfold. For being 100 kindle pages, this story is packed full of a rich medieval atmosphere, an intense plot, and tons of action, complete with twin rival Prince’s (one of the light, one of the darkness), a masquerade ball, an bad*** FMC with amnesia, and of course, deadly mushrooms.
This was a lovers to enemies to lovers and I loved how this one ended; my face was like 🥹🥺🥹 the whole time. The spicy scene was perfectly spicy and at just the right part. I love a good “I will follow you into death” revenge love story. This was an April Fool’s joke that turned out to be an epic little dark fantasy romance tale. It’s a quick binge-able read and it’s available on Kindle Unlimited. I’ll definitely have to get a shelf trophy though. 🙌🏻
Duet review (no spoilers): I got completely bewitched by the cover of Deadly Duet (Death Cap & Wolfsbane) and can’t believe I didn’t stumble upon these novellas sooner💫 Some stories don’t need hundreds of pages to leave a mark. Some love stories don’t need grand declarations to be eternal.🪄 When I first opened the books, I was surprised by how short they were - but don’t let that fool you! The journey they take you on? Vivid, thrilling! Time bends within these pages.💥 The writing moves like a spell, pulling you into this universe. The worldbuilding is effortless - so immersive that you forget there could be anything beyond its borders. Hesper & Morel. A love so pure, so unbreakable - it defines the very essence of true devotion.🫀 🌶 The spice? Only 1.5/5, but the tension, the longing, the way every touch burns? My, my… 🥵🔥 This isn’t just another cauldron of magic and supernatural creatures - it’s celestial. Otherworldly, yet deeply human. And the idea that the darkest shadows can birth the purest light? That sometimes, night holds more light than the day ever will? That stayed with me.🖤 If you crave a breathtaking romance wrapped in darkness but don’t have time for an 800+ page epic - this is exactly what you need.⚡ “Be like the sky and remain true: an unchanging symphony of the stars.” "Until the heavens fall onto the earth." ✨ Enjoy! 🖤
Agaric is the horrible Prince of Dryade. He is selfish, spoiled and entitled. He keeps Lady Amanita sheltered as she heals from the injuries she incurred during the battle where the banished Prince Morel attacked the Kingdom with his witch of a wife, Hesper. Agaric is a hero to his people, so he tells himself, he slayed his brother’s wife in front of him and watched him retreat in grief.
Amanita doesn’t remember anything before the battle only what Prince Agaric has told her, he has been so kind, but she doesn’t feel right here in Dryade. Like she doesn’t belong. It’s too bright and everything is sickeningly sweet. Why can’t she remember?
Morel, the younger of the twin Princes and banished from the court. He was always looked down upon as he was not as physically strong as his brother. But he was a MUCH better man and cared for his people, not just for himself. He is mourning the love of his life, Hesper, his Wolfsbane. She was his other half, his Queen.
I loved this. It is a quick fantasy read that packs a huge punch. It’s gives you court intrigue, power struggles, forbidden love, angst, hate, murder mystery, true love, friendship, loyalty, deception, coercion, and of course our rightful King and Queen finding their way back to one another.
I’m so glad we will be getting more of Morel and Hesper, I loved them.
Fairytale-esq story with epic battles, betrayals, true love that can conquer all, sacrifice and stopping at nothing for revenge. A quick and easy read that kept the pages turning with just enough spice to enhance the story.
This story follows twin brothers, polar opposites not only in looks but in every aspect of their lives. One brother, Agaric, thrives in the warm sunlight and all that it encompasses, while the other, Morel, revels in the darkness, the night and the cold. During the battle for the throne, the two brothers face off and the Hesper, the wife of Morel and Queen of Grissett, determined to save the love of her life, her king and her kingdom, intervenes and sacrifices herself. Morel, distraught over the loss of his wife and gravely injured in battle, is forced to watch as his brother steals his wife’s body and disappears. Vowed on revenge, Morel bides his time to heal and plot. When he arrives to the ball held in honor of the triumphant war, he finds his brother and his new fiancé, plans change. He wishes his brother to feel the loss that he himself has felt. He whisks this woman away and sets a new path for his kingdom and his lost love.
I personally root for the underdog and this story had me in the thralls. A beautiful story of strength and love.
If you are looking for a short but amazing read I highly recommend this one!
As a book that started off as an April Fools joke it has turned into this amazing little world I never wanted to leave.
A dark vs light fantasy with rival brothers, lots of war and fighting, and a badass FMC who is just trying to figure out who she is. The author does an amazing job of giving just enough detail to keep you wanting more (I literally did not want to put this book down). And for it being a fairly short novella (less than 100 pages) I feel like I understand the world more than some larger fantasy books.
The world descriptions make you feel like you are really there strolling through the flower fields in the golden kingdom or admiring the death caps in the moonlit valley.
And the nicknames the MMC give to our FMC has me swooning 😮💨 not to mention the amount of devotion a certain king has for a certain Lady 🤭

✨✨✨✨✨✨ This one was such a quick and great read! I loved mixing it up with a dark fantasy and ooh do I need more now. I loved why this book was written, definitely made me giggle but you nailed it! Amanita falls victim to losing her memory and while Agaric is doing his best to try and help anyway possible. Morel suffered such loss and is ready for revenge. With this book you’ll find kingdoms, revenge, war, morally grey character, mushrooms 🍄 and much more!

Thank you so much for sending me a copy for an honest review in my own words.
Ma’am, 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘮𝘦. I’m gonna need the 𝗪𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗘 backstory. Every little detail of those two that led to this. That was 𝔣𝔲𝔠𝔨𝔦𝔫𝔤 beautiful. How you captured me so deeply in less than a hundred pages. Like, 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧. As always, the writing was 𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜. The depth of the characters, flawless. The evolution of the story — so seamless and grand, despite this being a novella, absolutely incredible. Every word had meaning, and they sucked me in.
“Until the heavens fall onto the earth, I shall remain your shadow. Always.”
I can see how this author wrote this story so fast! What started as a joke.. for her.. turned into something we all were demanding being written, and alas, this incredible tale was created.. and wow was this everything I hoped it would be. This was a tale of light vs dark, twin vs twin that is centered around constant wars and attacks, the latest epic war resulting in a lot of blood and loss. This story is very plot heavy in the best way (theres one spicy scene that added to the story). This could have easily been a 500+ page book because the concept is so good. I still thoroughly enjoyed this novella. It was like reading a dark and twisted bedtime tale.. for adults! It really was a fun telling of “not everything is as it seems”.. afterall… “How can something so absolutely beautiful consist of the deadliest poison?”
This book was amazing and to think that this book was created as an April fools joke is funny to me. Since this book as short as it is turned out to be absolutely amazing. Here we have a dark retelling of two brothers fighting to keep their kingdoms. Agaric and Morel, one is light and sweet, and the other is the self proclaimed king of the dark. While Amanita is the victim of amnesia and Agaric selflessly takes care of her. I won’t give away too much since I hate spoilers. But please check out your trigger warnings and troupes. Make sure this book is right for you and add this to your TBR I promise you won’t regret it.
