aka David Peters

Peter Allen David, often abbreviated PAD, was an American writer of comic books, novels, television, films, and video games. His notable comic book work includes an award-winning 12-year run on The Incredible Hulk, as well as runs on Aquaman, Young Justice, SpyBoy, Supergirl, Fallen Angel, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099, Captain Marvel, and X-Factor.
His Star Trek work included comic books and novels such as the New Frontier book series. His other novels included film adaptations, media tie-ins, and original works, such as the Apropos of Nothing and Knight Life series. His television work includes series such as Babylon 5, Young Justice, Ben 10: Alien Force and Nickelodeon's Space Cases, which he co-created with Bill Mumy.
David often jokingly described his occupation as "Writer of Stuff", and he was noted for his prolific writing, characterized by its mingling of real-world issues with humor and references to popular culture, as well as elements of metafiction and self-reference.
David earned multiple awards for his work, including a 1992 Eisner Award, a 1993 Wizard Fan Award, a 1996 Haxtur Award, a 2007 Julie Award and a 2011 GLAAD Media Award.

Fallen Angel continues to impress, and this time I'm actually digging it more! We focus a good portion on Black Mariah, but we also get a lot more about "Lee" here. Her past is sprinkled throughout, just here or there, but she's definitely been through some shit, and lost a child no doubt, as it keeps coming back in small parts.

Black Mariah is a far better character than I expected, and by the end, very understandable. Her brother is a piece of shit, but a fun piece of shit. And I also have to say I really liked the final issue, as it fills in more of why Lee is sleeping with a certain somebody.

This is just a fun, noir-style story, worth reading if that's your type of genre. Luckily it is for me. A 4 out of 5.

I like the themes of the series, the exploration of morality, Lee's slowly awakening sense of what is right. It's a welcome change from the white-bread morality of most comics. I find Lee to be almost entirely unlikeable, but that's okay. I like Juris and Mariah, oddly. Still, I feel like PAD's writing around the meat of the story rather than through it (afraid of spoiling the mystery of whether Lee is Linda Danvers, I presume), and Lopez's art is acceptable at best. He's a solid enough draftsman, but I find the storytelling and linework to be too middle-of-the-road superhero to carry the mood intended in the series.

Still, it's enjoyable stuff. PAD thinks it's his best work, and I'd disagree, but it has the potential to be his best work.

Pretty much everything I said about volume one that was good continues. But this time it does what a good SECOND arc does. It takes so many of those mysteries from the first volume and reveals truths. Though not TOO much. And for every two mysteries it solves, three more take their place.

Though upon rereading one thig sorta happened. I think in some respect, the DC run was a mistake. Not in terms of quality but in things that CLEARLY would have been done better had the book been at IDW from day one. (I.E. Lopez's art is great but the better paper and J.K. Woodward's art style creates a much more Noir atmosphere.)

Peter David, Fallen Angel: Down to Earth (DC, 2007)

It took three years for the second volume of Fallen Angel, Down to Earth, to appear. It was worth the wait. We learn a great deal more about Lee, and also about Black Mariah (not the main bad guy, but obviously a much more important character in the story than the first volume would have led us to believe), get some more fast-paced and action-packed stories, more wonderful dialogue-- basically, more of everything that made the first Fallen Angel book great. It may be another three years until we see book three, but I'll be waiting in line when it appears. This is very, very good stuff. ****

I liked this while I read it on the bus this morning, but now that I think about it, it wasn't a really memorable arc or good story. It was just slightly above average. The book before this, which I completed before I added this app, was similar in quality or, perhaps, slightly worse. Divorcing this character from the DC universe was a real boon for the series, even though it had to seem terrible at the time of cancellation.

Series is wonderful. It's haunting, thrilling and very compelling. Peter David creates some of the most interesting chracters and Lee is one of them. Not good. Not evil but desires to see justice done. Will definitely continue to see what other kinds of trouble Lee gets herself into.
