Twisty and Confusing
I'm not a huge fan of stories that jump back and forth from the past to the present, so this one kind of bothered me in that aspect. Then, adding to my confusion, there seemed to be all these people who didn't really fit--as if the writer was setting up for future books. (For me, unnecessary people adding to my confusion.)
So...Apparently, vampires are real and they can time travel. One vampire, Salathiel, went back in time to kill the vampire that made him, inadvertently creating an enormous time wave (tsunami) that nearly destroyed the world. The Chronometric Conservation Agency (which is headquartered on a near-Earth satellite/space station) is in charge of making sure nothing like that happened again.
As a side hustle, they offer time travel tours with vampires acting as tour guides. The only catch is that vampires can't stay in the past too long. The symbiot that makes them vampires in the present (and keeps them young and healthy) goes into stasis in the past and, if left in stasis too long, the vampires body will begin to deteriorate; if they don't return to the present in time, they will die.
Dun dun dun!
Natalia takes a client back to Stirling Castle in the Scottish Highlands in 1314, where they are captured by Robert Bruce McKenzie (a cousin of and soldier for Robert the Bruce). There is a lot of jumping back and forth between1314/1315 and "present-day" 2262/2263. Natalia (Tally) finds herself in a situation that no traveler has ever faced before...a life-or-death situation whether she stays in the past or tries to return to her present.
There is also the mysterious vampire Charbonneau. He approaches the Agency asking to become a traveler (which, apparently, never happens), but he does not reveal us true motives. What its he up to? Can he be trusted?
There are other characters as well... Justin, Pritti, Tinker, Ursella Shun... Cael Stelios, who I think will feature in a future story...and Gabriel, the Psi-Filer (whatever that means), who is on the verge of starting a war.
Yeah.
I will give kudos to the writer for excellent world-building. I think the only problems I had were with understanding who/what Psi-Filers are and dealing with some of the mysterious backgrounds of some of the characters. (Mysterious backgrounds = Big Twists!)
I kind of enjoyed this book, but I'm not sure if I'm up for the next one.
