OUR STORY A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.
This is a gorgeous book. It even stands out among other Lonely Planet Guides for its beauty.
It profiles 50 trips arranged by zone: Southern, Western, Central and Eastern and Northern. Each trip has a map and showing notable stops along the way.
Most trips are in the 200-350 mile range with a few in the 100’s and one long one of almost 800 miles. An estimated number of days to devote to the trip is given.
There is also a “Perfect Picture Spot” with GPS coordinates.
There are pages that show “More Like This” with other places to see. Topics range from “Island Hopping” to “The Castle Collection” to “Hiking Countryside”.
This is a very good guide for showing the traveler what there is to see but there is not much else. There is no info on camping (or glamping) places along the routes, no info dining (although notable regional foods are listed) or travel tips for driving in these countries or for protocol for border issues.
The beauty of the photographs earn the book a place on coffee tables everywhere.
Inspiring book with lots of awesome roadtrips! Love that it has many hidden gems and a great mix between adventure, culture and city life. It’s quit a big and heavy book though. We have it in our van with us, as we travel through Europe full time, would fit better on a coffee table;) love the dreamy escapes and also has practical tips like where to sleep besides just pretty destinations. Great book to use, day dream away and enjoy
Beautiful arm chair travel book for me. As I’ve gotten older my dream of traveling the world in a van will probably remain just that— a dream, at least the European leg of it. And the author’s fears of the van being broken into are daunting, as are the mechanical issues that arise, along with some of the small, curved and dangerous roads. But what a great trip this book is regardless!
