Juan Carlos primero’s ‘Reconciliation’ is the fascinating memoirs written by the previous king of Spain in cooperation with French journalist Laurence Debray. His claim to fame lies mainly in what he did in the years 1975-1981. Franco who led Spain from 1939 to 1975 as a fascist dictator appointed at the end of the 1960s JC as his successor and to become king after his death. A Constitution was adopted in 1978 setting up a constitutional monarchy. The author fears that nowadays not enough people realise what a backward county was until the 1980s and under which circumstances the political and economic changes came about. That fear would lie in the many financial and relational scandals JC got involved into since the 2000s. I find it mind boggling that the same person who was so wise and effective in the 1970s could make so many personal misjudgments three decades later. A must read for those who are interested in Spanish history of the 20th century.
