"In each location, what it means to be queer is laid bare. What it means to live in defiance of the margins we're expected to occupy. How we carve out spaces that can hold love, lust, joy, hardship, and heartache." - Paula Akpan in the foreword

The LGBTQ+ Travel Guide is stunning! It has gorgeous photos of its 50+ destinations, and the book itself is so pretty with lots of great info.
It contains heaps of fantastic destinations, ideas for what to see and do, and there's even a family friendly section, as well as a worldwide Pride calendar, and listings for queer travel agencies.

As someone who's been fortunate enough to travel quite a bit, having an extensive guide for queer travelers is fantastic. This isn't just a cool travel guide and a pretty coffee table book (though it is those things, too) - it contains information that helps ease anxieties about being a queer traveler going to places unknown where safety might be an issue. It has lgbtq+ specific essentials on safety and rights, and on which places are queer-friendly. Alicia Valenski's introduction summed this up well:

"For LBGTQ+ adventurers who may feel isolated or marginalized during their travels, let this book serve as a reminder that you're not alone. Let it act as a reassuring friend, sharing incontrovertible proof that there are welcoming and safe spaces all over the world for you to explore, whether it's from the comfort of home or on the road."

Thank you to Lonely Planet for the gifted book

Many thanks to Sabrina Dax PR for including me on this tour and sending me this beautiful book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This gem of a guide had me ready to dust off my passport and shout “Yaaas, globe-trotters unite!” from the rooftops.

Let’s start with the fact that South Africa—yes, our South Africa—gets top billing. Cape Town and Johannesburg are the very first entries, and I’ll admit it gave me a little patriotic thrill. Representation matters, and it felt good to see our queer-friendly corners celebrated with pride.

The book spans 50+ places across the globe, each introduced by LGBTQ+ locals who know their cities better than any algorithmic travel app ever could. That said, it is mostly just one person’s take per location, which made me wish for a bit more diversity of opinion. Not everyone enjoys the same scene, right? What’s a dream for a leather daddy might be a nightmare for a pastel-loving plant gay—and vice versa.

But let me tell you: this book is beautiful. Full-colour photos practically jump off the page and drag you to the destination by the collar. You can feel the vibe—whether it’s a glittery Pride parade in São Paulo or a cozy queer-owned café in Amsterdam.

Speaking of which—Amsterdam has always been high on my bucket list. There's something about the blend of progressive spirit, canal-side charm, and rich queer history that makes it feel like a must-visit. Reading about it from a local’s perspective just reaffirmed that one day, I will be sipping coffee in a welcoming little café on a cobblestone street.

The real cherry on top? The global Pride calendar and the generous list of practical resources—apps, travel agents, safety tips, and more. It’s not just a wanderlust wishlist; it’s a toolkit for travelling queer, smart, and safe.

Whether you're planning your next adventure or just dreaming with a cuppa in hand (coffee, of course), this guide is an inspiring and affirming companion.

This is a great guide. There are lots of recommendations for lgbtq+ friendly places, with informations like when is the best time to go, when are pride celebrations, what are official languages, and what currency is used.

There is also a section for adrenaline adventures, art, or faniky friendky activities. I highly recommend you this book, if you’re looking for new places to go to.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

The LGBTQ+ Travel Guide by Alicia Valenski and Lonely Planet has great recommendations for queer-friendly places all over the world.

In fact, there are over 50 suggestions for the world's most queer-friendly destinations! Suggestions span from Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa to Bangkok, Thailand and Melbourne, Australia. There's also a spotlight on quite a few towns in the U.S., if you're in the states and unable to travel internationally at this time.

There are great "know before you go" highlights for various locations, which were especially helpful to me. They note what languages are spoken there, what currency is used, when they have pride celebrations, and when the best time is to visit based on weather and crowds. There are also tons of helpful maps, and suggestions on good restaurants or events to check out. There are so many photos included, which really paint a clear picture of all of the highlighted areas.

I really loved the "hit lists" section of the book, which features several options for where to go if you're looking for adrenaline-pumping adventures, awe-inspiring art, family-friendly festivities, inclusive island escapes, leisurely locals, seaside sanctuaries, or trailblazing travels (good hiking). One of my favorite queer vacation spots, Rehoboth, Delaware, is included in this book (as a seaside sanctuary), and I was very delighted to see it there. They even shout out Cape Henlopen State Park, which is one of my favorite places to camp!

I appreciated reading insights from interviews with queer tastemakers, because I really love insider tips on various locals before I visit them. But the biggest thing I appreciate about this book is the fact that there's a LGBTQ+ Travel Essentials section in the back which lists resources where you can know your rights, learn practical safety tips, and who to reach out to in case of an emergency while you're travelling. They also include a worldwide pride calendar and queer travel agencies, tours, publications, and apps!

I received a complimentary review copy from Lonely Planet. All opinions contained herein are my own.

This is a super book, beautifully designed and produced, and the sort of quality you would expect form a Lonely Planet hardback guide, with high quality photographs and a wealth of useful information. It covers over 50 LGBTQ+ friendly destinations and attractions around the world, though with an emphasis on the western world. It includes interviews with local LGBTQ+ individuals who offer their own personal tips and recommendations plus insights into their local culture. Although geared to the LGBTQ+ community, there’s plenty here for just about any traveller to enjoy, and might perhaps inspire them to visit places they might otherwise not have considered. It would make a perfect gift, a book to dream with, ideal for the armchair traveller as well as those who are fortunate enough to go see the destinations.

This book was so cute! The formatting was so pretty. Each place was a different color of the rainbow and had sections like first time tips and various things to do. It wasn't just focused on bars and clubs. There were a lot of good insider tips since Alicia Valenski went and talked to local queer people about their spots. I loved the diversity of things to do and eat so that you can definitely find something for yourself, regardless of what you like. The pictures were really pretty too, and there were so many great resources for queer travelers. I can't wait to use this as a guide!

What a magnificent and fun book! Full of fun travel tips from locals in a really fun format + some extra bonus trips at the end. Loved the photographs, and I just want to visit these places (but like always with wanting to go somewhere it will probably not happen, haha, but one can dream). Thanks to my hubby for buying this one for me!

This coffee table book is truly one of a kind: so many destination books have an #LGTBQ subsection, but this book flips that paradigm on its head and centralizes LGBTQ identities. It’s replete with everything travelers would need: amazing pics, local favorites curated by local queer people, emergency contact numbers, and everything in between!

Many thanks to Sabrina Dax & Lonely Planet for #gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
