This rating is for the first book only. Which is disappointing because where the first book ends feels like the book got ripped in half and now I have to wait to find out how it ends!!

This book reminded me of The Hunger Games at times. It was fast paced and easy to read and really makes you want to know what happens!!!

Thank you to Random House Children’s and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book.

This dystopian YA novel has an innovative and unnerving premise: it is a thought-provoking and mostly pacy read. I gave it 4 stars for this reason, but the ending was highly frustrating, forcing you to read the sequel in search of answers and closure. Some references to drugs, alcohol and violence, but nothing shocking: suitable for age 12/13 +?

Happy Head and Dead Happy is a two book dystopian series. The first book, Happy Head, sets the scene of a program created to "make teens happy." In reality, it is a manipulative cult that forces kids to do terrible things for approval and punishes those who don't. The main character Seb, battles with what he wants to do vs what he has to do in order to survive and get out. In the second book, we see Seb and Finn's love be challenged as a result of "phase two." There are complex emotions and the characters test just how far they will go to get approval from their deemed superiors. These books were very suspenseful and well written. I would definitely recommend this series.

I’m not usually into thrillers, this was kind of like an entry level one. I liked it, how I was thinking what the main character was thinking as they went through it too.

This is a review of the first book, Happy Head.

Happy Head is some kind of health retreat for teenagers, with the intention of making them happier. Attendance is mandatory, and for the premier trial of the thirteen day course, Sebastian Seaton is lucky enough (or unlucky enough as we later discover) to be one of the one hundred teens selected. It's here that Seb meets broody tattooed Finneas, who he can't seem to get out of his mind from the very moment that he first sees his ice blue eyes. Happy Head is not quite the retreat it was advertised as however and the teens quickly see themselves pushed to their limits by the Assessors in the pursuit of compliance and obedience, with increasingly harsh methods being adopted. Can Seb and Finn escape this place? And more importantly who will they become if they do?

This was a fun read, I was really engaged and I really liked Seb and Finn as characters and was absolutely rooting for them! The premise was an interesting one too, a kind of social experiment that I thought was kind of reminiscent of what I imagine a summer camp would be like, though obviously with a much darker twist. I do completely think this kind of thing would be possible though and potentially presented as some kind of alternative to medications for you g people who are having a crisis of confidence etc. Though also saying that, not all of the teenagers were in crisis, as they were apparently chosen at random, though the two protagonists were definitely more than a little troubled.

This is an LGBTQIA+ story too, with Sebastian still not quite out, at least to his parents, and having had some bad previous experience with boys, and being outed at school by his own sister. Of course then he meets Finn, who is also gay, and is forced to readdress his feelings, especially for this brooding stranger.

All in all, this is a sweet romance, set in a brutal, regimented ‘happiness’ program, which seems to be making the protagonists anything but happy! There's all sorts of weird experimental stuff going on and I can't wait to see what happens in the sequel Dead Happy, the np doubt dramatic conclusion to this tale!

The Happy Head series takes place in a near-future society where unhappiness is treated like a problem to be “fixed". Sebastian, a witty and skeptical teen, is sent to government-run camps that claim to teach happiness. At first the camps seems cheerful, but it quickly reveals itself as a place full of tests, manipulation, and hidden dangers.

The characters are sharp and memorable. Seb’s humor makes him a strong narrator, and the other teens each bring secrets and motives that keep you guessing about who can be trusted. The camp's settings are bright and welcoming on the surface but carries an eerie tension underneath, creating a constant sense of unease.

The main conflict follows Seb as he tries to survive the program, uncover the truth, and decide whether to follow the rules or fight back. Themes of freedom, control, and the cost of a “perfect” society give the story real depth.

I found the series fast-paced, clever, and full of twists. I loved how each character, whether being a deceived teen, or an antagonist, was so unique and developed as the secrets of the camps were revealed.

I STEAMROLLED through these booked after finishing Traumaland! Maaaan Josh Silver is such a legend of a writer I can hardly believe it!! The concept is so interesting and it was definitely a hard read at points. really enjoyed having more time with all the characters across two books.
Justice for Betty!! So glad she got out and became besties with Seb and Finn. Loveeeed the character progression of Elenor and seeing her channel her badassery into good. Low key annoyed the parents didn’t notice sooner (no contact? Typed up letters for convenience? Come on now..), but still cool to see the peeps take charge and fight for their freedom. Very fun to have a good ending of our boys in Manchester, and I listened to the end of the book in Manchester so that was cool!! Currently listening to Joy Division - it’s what Finn would have wanted !!salute!!

REVIEW ONLY FOR FIRST BOOK
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75/5

*spoilers between ⚠️ markers*
i’m not even sure what to say or think after reading this. it was so good in such a thrilling way, and made me anxious to continue reading at times because i was scared of what might happen. the storyline really tricks you but also the characters in a way and you carry this lingering feeling of uncertainty throughout the book
⚠️
that isn’t really even resolved because the book ends on a cliffhanger and there’s no definitive ending.
⚠️
i’m gonna have to read the sequel, Dead Happy soon because omg. i don’t know what to think.

took quarter of a star off only because the lack of certainty really gave me a sense of dread lmao 💀 and the story was quite confusing in parts.

If you are in a position that puts you in proximity with teens/young adults or are the parents of teens, then you may have noticed how many seem anxious, depressed or deeply concerned about their future. These novels detail a rehabilitation program gone wrong. Originally, the "Happy Head" program was established to give teens the skills needed to find happiness. What it became was a very twisted version of what the founder envisioned; so different in fact that several teens very existence is in question. "Happy Head" is a fascinating look at the perversion of good intentions to a hellish nightmare. Well worth reading!

I loved this series and I can’t wait to read more by this author. The main character is kinda awkward and unsure and rye and funny.

Teen coming of age, mental health, and lgbtq issue all handled not like the author is trying to hammer some point home about any of it but as if these are real people.

This book was perfectly narrated by Huw Parmenter and I’ll be speaking out more books read by him as well. Great audio quality and LOADS of personality in the characters without any of them seeming like a caricature of a teen.

3.5* I’d have given it more if it hadn’t ended in a cliffhanger. That’s on me for not closely reading the inside cover, but it should have at least provided some resolution. I found this at the American bookstore in Amsterdam and I’m not even sure it’s available here in the US. Taut story with quite a few plot holes, including why would some guy watching from a light house not see Finn and Seb coming and leaving Stone’s house? I’d like more progression of their relationship but it seemed to start and stop. Guess I need to track down the 2nd half!

ok so I haven't read the first one but just the second so yeah I feel like I've missed a bit and I'm unsure whether I need to know what occurred in the first? it's ok. dystopian, a little hunger games in part, a little YA Love island in others. still not sure what the doctor's full intentions were as I'm still leaning towards madness over assistance.
will I read the first one... probably not.

I read the first book in one sitting and immediately bought the 2nd that next day and read it too. Love the eerily positive vibes of Happy Head and the surprise love interest that constantly tests the protagonist. Will highly recommend!

This young, adult dystopian novel (although I would call it a novella) includes a plot that is quite intriguing.

Here’s the spoiler: you’re going to be left with a cliffhanger. The cliffhanger causes me want to read the next book, so I already placed it on hold.
